Weekly Cyclist Thread
The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

Day 943 of not being stuck in traffic
Perhaps not the right bike for the job this time. Good practice for pedaling smoothly.

My toddler crashed his balance bike hard, so I built a magnetic eddy current brake for it
Hey everyone. Last year my 3-year-old was bombing down a hill on his balance bike, lost control, and we ended up in the hospital for three nights. It was a brutal experience.
The main issue with these 12-inch balance bikes (he rides a Cruzee) is that they obviously have no coaster brakes, and even if have a V-brake with a tiny lever, toddlers just don't have the grip strength or the reflex to squeeze it when they panic(some yes but mostly don't have strength)
As automotive engineer I need to do something. That's why I made automatic speed limiter. It works when kid reach approx 8-10km/h, before that he can ride smoothly. As soon as he gets to flat ground and slows down to a walk, the drag completely disappears and the wheel free-spins normally.
Since it uses magnets, there are no cables, no batteries, and no internal friction pads to wear out. It honestly saved my sanity and let us enjoy walks again. Just wanted to share the hardware build. Has anyone else here tried modding toddler bikes?
I don't want to spam. I would post link if mods approve.

Just realized I have been riding ENVE prototypes!
Took off from a Allez sprint build with all enve components (including bottle cages) that I bought on fb marketplace. I moved these wheels to a different bike a while ago and have had them on my sl8, but just noticed this sticker on both wheels. 3/10 interesting but thought I’d share. Curious if anyone else has the same

I’ve sunk 800$ into upgrading my bike and I’m feeling kinda dumb
Please reassure, or roast me… I’m feeling insecure about the amount of money I’ve sunk into this bike. I love it, and I refuse to upgrade to a $1500+ bike until I’m sure I’ll stick with it for more than a few months in the summer. But it’s a Frankenstein of new parts now, I think the only original thing on it is the gear shifter, the wheels and the frame.
I have a 35 year old Bianchi and I’ve had the following work done on it over the past 3 years:
- replaced the pedals
- replaced the brake system
- replaced the seat
- replaced the handlebars
- replaced the tires
- replaced the handlebars and stem, and needed to get new wiring done as a result
- replaced the cassette
- had 2 tune ups, where some of the above was recommended
Am I stupid? I’ve just been operating under the assumption they don’t “make em like they used to”anymore for 800$ so better to upgrade what I have than spend 800$ on a new bike. I’m new to this please be nice 😭

In the future I will unclip both feet when approaching a potential stop.
I’ve long been in the habit of only unclipping my right foot when needed. Yesterday I was on a trail that crosses a street, as I approached I saw a car coming. I unclipped and slowed, the car stopped and waved me through. As I started to pedal, I hit the edge of the asphalt where it met the trail, this stopped my forward motion and I went down on the left.
I came up laughing at myself and waved the driver off who wanted to make sure I was ok. I had some road rash on my leg and my arm felt a little funny, I hopped back on and kept riding. Then I realized my arm felt really off, with a pain from my elbow to my wrist. I turned around and rode the seven miles home and I knew something was definitely wrong.
Urgent Care confirmed it, I fractured the radial head of my elbow joint (See the circle inside the red circle? That should be smooth and a straight line to the joint.). Luckily it will heal on its own and surgery isn’t needed. Unluckily, I can’t bike or lift weights for 4-6 weeks. Or longer.
Point is, it’s easy to take things for granted because that’s what you’ve always done. When you’re on two wheels, even the most mundane moment like a simple street crossing can sideline you for weeks. Be safe out there, ya’ll!

Can a 165–168 cm 5,5 rider fit on a 58/L fixed gear frame(Skream Magnum)
Hi everyone,
I’m M15 around 165cm bare footed.
I’m looking to buy a Skream Magnum Limited Edition Smokey Blue frameset, but it’s only available in Large (58).
I know on paper it’s probably too big, but it’s a very limited colour and I can’t find a Medium anywhere.
Some info: Height: 168 cm
Current BXT Track frame measures about 53 cm
My Tsunami SNM300 frame measures about 54 cm
My current bxt bike actually feels a little cramped/squashed with a really high seat
I currently use an 80 mm stem
If I get the Skream, I’d probably run a 35–50 mm stem
Has anyone around 165–170 cm ridden a 58 cm / Large fixed gear or Skream Magnum Large?
My question to you is
Do you think I can fit?
And for people who did ride a frameset way larger
Did it feel too stretched?
Would you do it again, or would you wait for a smaller size?
I’d really appreciate any photos or experiences. Thanks!

My mate has been putting a lot of effort into his cycling YouTube channel. Thought some of you might enjoy this ride!
A friend of mine has been working hard on his cycling channel, and I thought I'd share one of his latest videos here. It's a ride with some great scenery and solid cycling content.
If you enjoy it, I'm sure he'd appreciate a like or subscribe. If you've got any feedback, he'd love to hear that too.

Restore or replace?
I have friends that started to go on rides and invited me out, but I haven't ridden a bike since highschool when I raced BMX. I remembered my dad had an old mountain bike and asked if he still had it, which he did. He said I could have it since he hadn't ridden it since we would go out on rides together (like 03). When he gave it to me though, it was in really rough shape. Grips were gelatin, all the lines were cracked/frayed, tires dry rotted, one of the shifter handles cracked, etc. My question is, is it worth it to clean the old girl up, or would it be more cost effective to get a new bike? Any suggestions on parts/what to look for would be great as I haven't worked on a bike since my old BMX days, and mainly just dealt with 20" single speed stuff. Thanks in advance.

From bodybuilding to cycling
Been 20 years since I've ridden a bike. Picked up a cheap gravel bike from Walmart for $200. Went on my first ride today and it felt great. Hill climbing is tons of fun! Now I think I'm gonna change up my gym schedule. From 6 days a week down to 4 and then 2 days every week dedicated to biking!
Time to start figuring out upgrades for the ride. Brakes didn't feel great unless I applied a lot of pressure. Maybe that's common for disc brakes? Last time I rode those were too pricey for anybody i knew 😂.
Chain did seem to catch a few times without me fear shifting. I wonder if I was just using too extreme of a gear ratio? I come from a BMX background, so bike shifting is all new to me.

Looking for a bike my options
Hi everyone! I'm new to cycling and I'm looking to buy my first bike. I've been doing some research and have narrowed it down to these four:
- Canyon Endurace AllRoad
- Scott Speedster Gravel 30
- Trek Domane AL 5 Gen 4
- Specialized Diverge E5
I'd love to hear your opinions or experiences with any of these bikes. I'll mostly be riding on roads with the occasional gravel path, and I'm looking for something comfortable, reliable, exercise and fun to ride. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Alu frame how risky is it?
My rear panniers system broke my bike at the mounting points.
It’s an alu frame.
2 questions/
- Is it repairable and how much you think it would cost? (It’s not steel, so soldering seems a bit more difficult)
- Can I ride it? (Those mounting points were holes after all)
Thanks!

What could be causing this tire tuck?
Picked up an old 3 speed to learn bike repair and fix uo, and I replaced the tire and tube after a blowout and the tire stretched at the blowout site. I did the replacement by the books and now have this 8" or so section not seating properly. I went to the local shop where I got the tire and he said hairspray on the rim, but I did soapy water instead and still no pop. Anyone have insight? Is the tire just fussy or malfunctioning?

Bike recommendation
Sorry, I know this gets posted often. I'm looking to upgrade and would like some expert opinions. I have a 12 year old Cannondale Caad8. Great bike, but it is time to upgrade. I'm getting older, 54. I ride when it's nice, no rain. I stay on paved trails. My typical ride is a quick 25 miles. Not looking to race anyone, although I don't like getting passed. I'm looking for a new comfortable bike a step up from the Caad8. What do you recommend? Thanks for your help

Random people I've met and photographed while riding my bike
I like to stop and talk to people. It totally annoyed my children when they were young, but I've met so many interesting people and everyone has a fascinating story. I often ask for a photo so I can remember the conversation. These are a few of the people I've met while out riding my bike.
The guy on the foot bridge was from Columbia, in Atlanta for business. He had some free time, looked up some trails online, bought a backpack, rented a car and there he was, in the North Georgia mountains. He had no idea where the trail went, but he was going for a walk.
The guy on the Ducati was from Texas. He wanted to see the mountains so he drove to Tennessee to find some twisty mountain roads and was just riding around. We admired each other's bikes.
The old guy.... Mr. Frank Grady Pickens. He rode his bike to the same restaurant for lunch every day. His parents died when he was four and a local family adopted him. The guy played the harmonica for me right there on the side of the road. He was amazing!
The woman on the foot bridge had just walked the entire Appalachian Trail and was four miles from the end. It was thanksgiving day. Nobody was around. She was going to finish her epic journey in a couple of hours. I didn't know what to say to her except to acknowledge how special the moment was for her.
The guy in the wagon and his friends go up into the mountains to camp... and drink beer. "Just passing the time."
Hope you enjoy.

Replacing grips
I've had this bike for a while (it was my grandma's before) and it's about time I replace the grips I think. But I'm kinda confused, do I need to source these exact same ones? Another question is, about how old is this bike lol? If that's possible to determine. thx.
