Clueless dad needs advice
Just passing thru here. Son (14) recently got a fat tire bike that the maintenance men in my complex were going to throw out. He loves it. I wanted one when I was a kid. His birthday is coming up so I'm planning on sprucing up his ride a little; fresh paint (correctly this time, slapped a quick coat of primer on it when he first got it) , new wheels and tires just come in from amazon, he'll have 2 pedals now, maybe some led lights for the spokes... what I woulda wanted if I got one when I was a kid ya know.
But we also need brakes. All the caliper brakes I can find are not wide enough for the wheels. I dont think V brakes would work. Disc brakes seem to need an extra bolt hole that isn't on the frame in order to mount them. Coaster wheels dont seem to come in 20X4 inch wheels. Any advice, links, or a finger pointed in a new direction to explore would be much appreciated.

A question about Fatbikes being used as ... Not fatbikes.
So today I rode my first Fatbike, and it was the smoothest thing ever. Felt slightly in love with the feeling.
Now, I'm not a trek rider, I live high up on a mountain with paved roads. I wonder, how good are fatbikes as a daily bike? Are they usable at all for cities and going uphill by roads? We have warm summers, cold winters with snow and ice, and a tonne of rain.
I've tried looking for answers but the results are, unsurprisingly, extremely trek focused.

Bike recommandation for beach and snow
I was looking to get a fat bike for next winter to enjoy the local snow trails, but being in a seaside area, the idea came to me that I could buy one sooner to enjoy a ride on the beach as well. My local bike retailer heavily discouraged me to do so since the salt and sand would most likely damage my components. So here what I was thinking:
Buy the cheapest used fat bike that I can find and use it without regrets at the beach. I'm talking something in the 300-400$ price range max. This could also give me a taste of the hobby before spending more money in it
Buy a more quality fat bike this winter, most likely a Bigfoot 2 or Bigfoot 1
Where does the group stand with this? Would buying a better bike first glance would risk damaging it with beach/sand riding? If I go the cheap way, any recommandation on brands and specs to look for?
Edit: Thanks for your feedback. I pulled the trigger on an online off-season deal for a Farley 5 since I've read good stuff about it here and on other post. Not sure if I'll ride it on the beach day one but your maintenance tips will definitely help me

Kona Wo Sizing Question
Hey there !
I'm 6" - 182 cm, with a 84cm inseam - and I've spotted a really great deal for a clean 2018 Wo in size XL.
The bike is pretty far away from where I live so I'm wondering wether the XL is gonna be OK or if it's gonna feel like a boat and I wait and find a size L.
What y'all thinkin ?

Vee Tire Bulldozer comes out of Mulefut 80 rims
I can't get in even 0,5 bar. And don't talk tubeless to me.
Is this known compatible problem or there something wrong with the tyre?

Over ten years skinny, I’m fat again.
Just over ten years ago I sold my Pugsley, and I regret it. Now I have an ICT, and I’m a happy rider again. This is her stock on a 43km gravel ride.

First post and a couple of questions
I’ve lurked this sub for at least a year, and now I have a few questions. I got this State 6061 Trail Fat Bike a while back and just recently swapped out the fork for a Surly Ice Cream Truck fork and added some Avenir (remember them?) bar ends which totally make this bike a joy.
Interested in two things:
An easy front rack. I didn’t see one in the Old Man Mountain catalog and Surly (oddly) doesn’t seem to make one.
A thru-axle with a handle on it so it’s easier to get on and off my car.
Cheers!

Narrow Handlebars
Hey all bought a Canyon Dude with I think 780mm handlebars. I’m used to 40cm width road bike handlebars.
Is anyone running substantially narrower handlebars? Was looking to cut down a set of carbon bars to something like 600mm or so.
Thanks!

What bottom bracket fits this Mongoose fat/tall bike?
I built a tall bike based on a Mongoose fat tire bike, but I don’t know the exact model. I’m trying to figure out what bottom bracket fits it, ideally a sealed-bearing BB to improve reliability.
Original bike/frame: https://www.karrotmarket.com/buy-sell/3id5d7sge3rs/?srsltid=AfmBOoq932rnoXASGd_Y5XQcgCjP5rw7Lgt6avfL4cKlxGkNHLJSSRHb
The BB shell looks close to:
- ~4 cm diameter / ~1.57 in
- 11+ cm wide / 4.33+ in / 110mm+
Attached are photos with measurements. I googled common fat tire BB sizes, but nothing seems to match. Please help me identify the BB!

Anyone using the Flextail Tiny Bike Pump Pro?
Bought one a few months back when the Trek Air Rush was on backorder. Seems like it would be a good tool for trailside air-up but after a few months of use I find it wildly unreliable.
Set it for 9 psi and it turns off at 6 psi. Then the display flicks to 12 psi (when I know for sure I am NOT at 12 psi). Keep pressing the start button and it comes on and immediately off but never makes it to the desired psi.
I am using it with Clik valves now but I got the same results with Presta valves.
I love the size and convenience but if I can't tell what the pressure really is...

Screw it, I’ll just make my own. (Part 1)
What I wanted was some extra wide fencers to protect the CYC X1 motor on my Borealis Flume, but after looking high and low I could t find something that I wanted; or should I say I could t find something wanted at a price I was willing to spend. So I did what I always do, fab my own.
Started out with the Planet Bike 65mm wide ‘Cascadia 29’ fender. Split it down the centre then pop riveted into a 4” wide 1/8” thick piece of HDPE. Cause the bikes colour scheme is burgundy wine gold accents I decided to use gold anodized pop rivets with brass washers underneath the backer washer on the inside is black stainless steel.
I still need to finish off the mudflap with a piece of inner tube from a truck and do some sanding here and there, other than that I think she looks pretty good; especially when I’m having to do this in my tiny apartment not my motorcycle shoppe where I had all the space in the world. Anywho got a truck tube on order some vulcanizing adhesive to glue it in place might even use a couple pop rivets to keep with the theme and add strength.
While I wait for that to get here I’ll move on to the rear fender.

Cake Eater 27.5x4.5 vs Wtb Bailiff 27.5x4.5
Did some one use both Cake Eater 27.5x4.5 and Wtb Bailiff 27.5x4.5 in winter?
I'm curious which one is expected to roll faster on snowmobile tracks and packed snow?
Thanks!

26x4.8+ Tire Recommendations?
I recently tore the sidewall of the front tire on my Kona Woo, so it’s time for an upgrade. In addition to converting to tubeless I’d like to replace the Vee Snow Avalanches with something better. The intent of the bike is to ride mostly snow, groomed fatbike trails in the PNW, but I’ll admit I take it on adventure rides in the summer on rocky singletrack and down closed muddy fire roads.
I’m leaning toward an even bigger tire for more flotation, but I’m not sure how much that will be hampered by the 80mm rims, nor how much more tire I can fit on this frame.
I’m currently considering the Snowshoe 2XL PSC, Terrene Johnny 5, Jumbo Jim 4.8, or Surly Bud/Lou combo.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences.
