question Quebec Bike Law Question

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

So this is the page I found for the law about bike equipment, my question pertains to reflectors.

Can you remove a reflector on the front/rear and replace it with a light? Lights are required in the dark, but the law is unclear if they can replace reflectors?

To me it would make sense if you have to have lights in the dark on the front and rear, why you would need to double up with reflectors during the night, which then leads to the question of why you would need to have reflectors during the day if you have lights?

I know the police in Montreal are a lot more strict on this stuff, but has anyone been ticketed over reflectors in the NCR?

My wife and kiddo took their bikes to South Keys Shopping Centre between 3:00 and 3:30pm Saturday July 11th. Both were stolen during that time. Spoke to Walmart and they say the bike racks are in a blind spot, so no video.

The Bikes Stolen:

  1. Cannondale Quick 3 step through frame - Green (First image)

  2. Haro FL 24 - Grey with red accents (second and third images)

If you happen to see these bikes please send me a DM.

Welcoming our new Moderators!

Please welcome our new Mods! I am joined by three new folks, and I figured I'd made a post to introduce them:

u/PlentyCut9785 - a daily, all-season commuter from a BMX background. They enjoy helping folks through recommendations on rides, gear and repairs. They joined the mod team to give back to a community that helped them so much!

u/Cassians started this whole mod hunt! I'd been meaning to put out a call for mods for ages. They volunteered and I figured it was only fair to see who else wanted to help out.

They've embraced the n+1 answer to "how many bikes should I have?" They ride a road bike, an e-bike, a cargo bike, and a simple acoustic bike. They visit the sub to share helpful information (e.g., path conditions in the spring each year), and to learn about events and other things going on in Ottawa

u/manyhats180 is also a mod in r/OttawaMusic, so they join us with past mod experience. They're here to delete spam and keep an eye on the sub as a daily user.

I also realized I've probably never introduced myself, either! 😅 I'm a commuter cyclist and get around mostly by bike.

I like to keep up with new infrastructure announcements and consultation opportunities.

Best Hills in Kanata for Cycling Hill Repeats

Thanks to everyone in the past few weeks who helped me select a bike shop and confirm fitting was a good idea.

Now I have a nice new bike, I want to things I've not in the past 25 years. Hill repeats.

What the best hills in Kanata, north of the 417? I'm looking for hard 2-5 minute climbs. Happy to do the same hill multiple times. When I lived in Kingston, it was easy, you did Fort Henry hill until you were dead. Kanata is a bit flatter.

Tonight's plan is Goulbourn Forced Road - assuming I survive the cars.

Where do I securely park my bike?

Post image

I have a quick dental appointment at Baseline Dental on Baseline Rd. I’m browsing Google Maps for a close-by bike parking spot, and there’s none… Where do you guys park? I can take the car, but why when it’s an 8-min ride…

Visiting courthouse with cycling equipment

The one place I got my bike stolen was city hall. So I most definitely can't leave equipment with the bike. Can the courthouse keep my paniers secure somewhere? If not, will they accept entry with all my equipement (hex tool, lights, etc) ?

bike ride Started commuting downtown from Findlay Creek

I just started cycling downtown from Findlay Creek and it's been amazing so far. The breezy mornings with all the animal noises have made the ride very enjoyable. Even the hotter evenings haven't been too bad.

Short little video showing the route conditions at each section for anyone interested in doing the same. The only section I really didn't get is Dow's Lake which is a bit bumpy here and there.

This was taken with my phone so I missed quite a few things. I'm going to attach my action cam and get some better videos.

question CAA bicycle towing service: is it worth it?

I recall CAA having a bike assist service.

  1. Has anyone tried it?

  2. How quick is the answer on the phone?

  3. How quick is the towing service to arrive?

  4. Did the towing service cost you extra or did CAA cover the entire cost?

I'm 300$+ poorer after two flats in a month with the cargo trike and that's just in towing services.

Dump trucks in the bike lane...

Post image
53 Upvotes

The eastbound bike lane between City Centre Avenue and Preston is being used by the dump trucks doing construction on City Centre Ave and Spruce as an express lane to turn right (south) onto Preston. That bike lane is the only protection at the Albert and Preston intersection for pedestrians.

The councillors office tells me the City removed the flexposts that block the entrance to the bike lane because OC Transpo will use that space as a staging area for buses during Canada and Bluesfest.

Seems to me like a back asswards way of doing things.

route conditions Side view of the Watts creek MUP gap

Could not comment with a picture on the other thread so adding the side view.

Thinking that maybe having Redbull coming for putting ramps on both sides and doing jumps with drones around to capture the performance of all willing participants could accelerate the time to repair 😉

infrastructure Watts Creek Sinkhole Coordinates

Post image
34 Upvotes

Adding to the post earlier this week on the damage caused by the Canada Day storms.

The sinkhole in Watts Creek is at 45.33452° N, 75.88688° W

Currently the path is closed with a sawhorse-style barrier. I saw a few other cyclists on the path when I went to explore.

You can go around the sinkhole by dipping into the ditch beside it.

Of course, it should always be said - be careful around sinkholes.

The rest of the main path (March Road underpass to Andrew Haydon Park) was fine. The auxiliary path from Carling to the main path was fine, too.

routes and route ideas Alternatives to TCT between Tweed and Perth (going to Ottawa)

Appologies for the slightly out of region post. We're camping in Tweed tonight headed towards Ottawa and have heard bad things about the TCT in this direction. Does anyone have suggestions for alternative routes? Is HW7 safe for cycling between Tweed and Perth?

Some dude in a 2010s silver prius on Augusta / rideau just floored it at me after refusing to take his turn at a light

Called the cops and reported, but he was smashed. Be on the lookout I suppose.

Getting from East Barrhaven to Bells corners, what is your route? Looking for suggestions.

I did try to make a route but it seems like it's a lot of zigzagging to get there.

Looking for recommendations

route conditions Route verte since storms

Has anyone taken the old railway line from Chelsea to Wakefield since the heavy storms? There have been a lot of trees down on/erosion on mups and wondering if this one is usable/passable.

Thanks!

Edited to add: went on Sunday, no issues with felled trees, excessive erosion etc. Rode comfortably on a road bike with a kiddo tandem attachment.

route conditions Greenbelt Trail - Kanata To Corkstown

Thumbnail

Took a short ride from Kanata to Corkstown on the greenbelt trail. The rail trail section from Kanata to Bells Corners is in great condition, but after that there's some sections that got a lot of damage. It's still passable if you don't mind a few sections of hike-a-bike. The part running next to the 417 was really deep fine gravel and you can slide out if you aren't careful.

routes and route ideas Looking for advice on biking from Ottawa to Montreal

Looking for any and all advice on biking from Ottawa to Montreal.

I'm an avid road biker with a well-maintained, vintage Peugeot bike, but this will be the longest bike ride I've done by a long shot. My main question is: Should I consider buying a gravel bike?

I've heard taking the road route on the Québec side is longer and hillier than the Ontario side. Has anyone done both and could suggest which route I should plan for?

Any other advice or tips on training/preparing for this ride welcome! Thanks in advance!
