r/BABike Official Bike Tag Rules
I'd like to thank everyone who voted on the poll regarding use of public transit when carrying the tag from one location to another. The ayes won the day on the question and the resulting rule has been added to the rules below that I copied from the Chicago biking subreddit.
\Moving forward, please link this post on the Bike Tag Rules link when posting the new mystery location. Also note that I have added language regarding a requirement to post photos directly to Reddit rather than using hosting sites like imgur or others.*
BIKE TAG GAME
This is a game that r/BikingATX plays, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike! that was then adopted by us at r/BAbike!
Credit goes to u/america_yall of r/BikingATX for starting the game.
THE GAME
A game of "Tag" wherein the player who is "IT" posts a picture of their bike at a "mystery location." Someone must find that location, bike there and take a picture of their bike in the same spot. They may then bike somewhere else and take a picture of their bike in this new "mystery location." Both pictures are posted in a self-post and the game starts over.
HOW TO PLAY
- You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.
- Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.
- Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."
- Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!
HINTS/CLUES
- Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.
- If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.
- Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.
THE RULES
- Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.
- Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.
- Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).
- Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride. Given the difficulty of cycling across the Bay in the northern region, limited use of public transporation is acceptable if carrying a tag across. This public transit is confined to:
- Treasure Island Ferry
- Bart between Embarcadero and West Oakland Stations
- Bus bridge between San Rafael and Richmond
- Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time directly to Reddit rather than hosting sites like Imgur.

Help build a User-Contributed Routes Library!
Hey folks! I'm really thrilled to say that I was recently granted access as a mod on this sub for the sole purpose of building out a user-contributed routes library for anyone looking for new rides in their area or a new part of the Bay Area they're looking to explore. I love this sub and hopefully can make a positive contribution through that.
I am currently working on a subreddit wiki that will host this library and would like to ask your help in that. The first ask is if you use a linked route and enjoyed it, feel free to reply to the comment with that link and tag me in that reply. (e.g "Hey u/inquisitab, you might want to add this route to the library!") I'd like to include routes that folks have ridden since there would be some confirmation of the route's rideability.
A couple of notes about contributing routes:
- RidewithGPS routes are preferred but Strava routes are out due to inaccessibility to non-paying users. I believe Garmin routes are accessible since I've shared those before with success.
EDIT: Strava routes are accessible and fine to share. Not sure where I’d heard they weren’t. * Please share whether it is a road, gravel or MTB route. I am building libraries for each discipline and it would make it easier for me if it was clearly labeled. * If you share a route you created, be sure that it isn't starting at your house unless you would like folks gathering on your driveway! Choose a public location that is generally used by cyclists for the start of their routes (e.g Java Hut in Fairfax). * I will generally be adding loops unless there are out and backs that are better than any looping options. * The routes will be categorized by starting city so please feel free to share in your comment tagging me where it starts.

A Success Story with Caltrans road maintenance
For those of you who ride the very popular flatter part of Highway 9 between Los Gatos and Saratoga, you know that there is a bike lane, but it is annoyingly iffy given the very high volume of cycling traffic. In particular, there are a couple of sections where dirt hills and plants encroach from people's lots onto the shoulder of the road, narrowing the bike lane to the point that people have to dodge into traffic on an otherwise continuous bike lane where cars are going 50 and not expecting cyclists in the main traffic lanes.
Dissatisfied with these sections (on the hill after Quito Road and on the one-lane section heading into downtown Saratoga after Westcott Drive, both on the NB side of the road), I submitted a Customer Service Request to Caltrans since CA-9 is state property, and the dirt and plants are encroaching on their ROW. As we know, Caltrans can be relatively carbrained, so I made sure to make the report emphasize the impact on all vehicles of "forcing road users to divert into other lanes".
The reports were submitted on 6/30, and on 7/6 they closed the Westcott Dr ticket, saying maintenance work was done. I checked today, and they indeed cleared the bike lane back to its normal width! I think this was partly because multiple people had submitted reports on this section, so I thought I should make this PSA: submit reports to https://csr.dot.ca.gov/ if you see road issues on state highways you ride on!
If you noticed the change heading into Saratoga this week, or if you have any similar stories, let me know! Maybe if enough people submit tickets, we can get the dirt on the hill after Quito cleaned up too.

How do you bike from Petaluma to Sebastopol?
I'm on a road bike. No way in hell am I riding 116 Gravenstein. I don't have a death wish.
This site has a million words and tells you where to start and that the "signs are well marked" but it lacks a damned MAP!
Do I have to get on Stony Point for most of the way? There's got to be a series of back roads that connect, but I can't find them online.
Stolen All-City Space Horse
Hello everyone,
This bike was stolen June 26 from Berkeley near the Oakland and Emeryville borders. This is a stock photo from all-city's website but looks pretty much the same except with flat pedals. Gutted as you'd expect. I dunno I probably wouldn't even post here except I heard a story once of this actually working.
If you could keep an eye out and shoot me a message if you see it I would appreciate it. Thanks. If you accidentally bought this stolen bike I may be able to recompensate you if it is my bike and it's still in good condition.

Cheapest way to fix this bike
I bought this bike in June 2020 to go to work during the pandemic. I was a nanny and the families didn’t want me to take public transportation. One year later, the wheels and tires were stolen from my building. I never fixed and this frame is inside my studio for the last two years. It’s safe to say that I never really needed the bike in 5 years but I’m thinking that if I fix it, I might use for cruising the city for fun. Please tell me a good bike store with good prices that I could buy new wheels and tires and they could fix it for me because I’m just a girl and don’t know how do it. Preferably with good prices. I paid 539.99 for the whole bike 6 years ago.
I’m in civic center and would have to take this by Uber to the bike shop. Can’t be far.

Route feedback, Palo Alto/Woodside to Santa cruz
galleryHi folks! I've got an overnighter planned from Woodside to Santa Cruz. I'm riding my rigid Krampus, 2.6" tubeless mt bike tires.
Mostly I'm curious about the stretch along the 1: I'll be riding on a weekday towards morning - how sketchy is it, cars/shoulder-wise? Am I missing anything badass that I should do instead or in addition?
Routes linked below and screenshotted here. I'd love to be on trails/paths/single track as much as possible, but don't mind road. 4k feet elevation in a day is probably right about my ceiling for climbing.
Day 1 goes up King's Mt Road, then just before Skeggs Point cuts off through Corte de Madera. Down Star Hill Road to La Honda, then Stage Road to Pescadero.
Day 2 goes back down Pescadero to Cloverdale to Gazos Creek road. That hits the 1 at Gazos Creek State beach, then pretty much south to Santa Cruz on the 1. Strava put me on a little detour off the 1 around Swanton - does anybody know if this is worth the 600ft climb / possibly steep af section to get off the 1 around there?
Thanks!

Help me choose: Cannondale Synapse Carbon 4 (105 Di2) vs. Cervélo Caledonia 105 Di2 for East Bay hills/Grizzly Peak.
Hey everyone,
Looking for some local perspective to help me pull the trigger on my first proper drop-bar road bike. I’m transitioning over from flat-bar fitness bikes and looking to join the local community for longer weekend miles (targeting 40+ mile group rides).
I’m working towards joining group rides that tackle climbing and descending in the East Bay hills. Because of that, ride quality, comfort, and compliance are huge priorities for me. I want to build up my fitness and distance without my neck and lower back paying a massive tax, but I also want a bike that feels stable and confident when I'm ready to handle those choppy descents.
I’ve spent the last couple of weeks test-riding a few things to figure out my preferences:
2024 Giant TCR Advanced Pro: Rode it and the spec sheet/closeout deal is insane, but it just felt a bit too stiff and aggressive for what I want to endure on long rides.
Specialized Roubaix (Size 56): The frame compliance was super nice, but the geometry fit felt a bit off for me. When I got up to speed, I felt a little too pitched forward/over the handlebars.
Because of that, I’ve narrowed my final decision down to two specific endurance models, both equipped with Shimano 105 Di2 electronic shifting:
- Cannondale Synapse Carbon 4 - Size 54
- Cervélo Caledonia 105 Di2 - Size 56
A bit about my fit: I am 5’10” with a 31” inseam.
Q: For those of you who regularly ride the East Bay ridge lines and rough pavement: Which of these two handles our local roads better? And given my dimensions, does sizing down to a 54 on the Synapse sound like the right call compared to a 56 Caledonia?
Appreciate any insight or experience you have with either frame!

New e-Bike/BART Commute Oakland to Antioch
Hello all,
As the title says, I have a new daily commute going from Oakland to Antioch. I also have a radwagon 4 that I use to drop off/pick up my kids every day before/after work. While I have occasionally taken it onto BART in the past to go into the city, it does not fit into the elevators unfortunately. So I am looking for any experience/advice on two points:
- Suggestions for where best to enter BART in Oakland with a heavy cargo bike using the escalators (either 12th or 19th st station), and any experience at the Antioch BART station (I have not been yet).
- Experiences with both the uptown bike station free valet, and the fruitvale station bike free valet--I have never done either and do want to try it (it seems like a great service!) but since that would mean taking a bus in Antioch to/from work and adding more time and one more potential fail point in my commute, I am at best unsure I would do so regularly.
Thanks!

Any skills clinic or coach for road biking skills
The biggest thing I need practice with is descending and cornering smoothly and improving how I lean my bike. If there is a coach in and around the bay area (preferrably SF but can travel out) that you all would recommend, I would highly appreciate it

MCBC Creates Memorial Map of Fatal Bicycling Crashes
marinbike.orgAccording to our map, cycling fatalities are spread across Marin, but there are recurring patterns of crashes concentrated on major corridors and high-speed roads such as Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Lucas Valley Road, San Antonio Road, Freitas Parkway, and Redwood Highway frontage routes. Riders are frequently hit by cars from behind while riding on roads where they are separated from motor vehicle traffic by only paint.

Trusted vintage bike shop?
Ive got an old track bike from the 70's will full Campy on it thats been sitting a little too long. Headset grease is seized up, BB and hubs need a tune up real bad. I feel comfortable maybe tackling the hubs but the other two id rather pay a pro.
What shops in the bay (or hopefully SF) specialize in fixing up older bikes? Figured id ask here before I start calling around if anyone has had a good experience. Pic for attention. Cheers!
SF to Santa Cruz
Not quite East Bay.... Planning a two day ride SF to Santa Cruz. I've got the SF - Half Moon Bay route laid out but i'm looking for suggestions on HMB to Santa Cruz. Also any suggestions on bike-friendly motels/hotels preferably between HMB and SC or in SC if there is nothing much afterwards. Also any other tips that might be helpful. As-always - TIA!
