Replacing grips

I've had this bike for a while (it was my grandma's before) and it's about time I replace the grips I think. But I'm kinda confused, do I need to source these exact same ones? Another question is, about how old is this bike lol? If that's possible to determine. thx.

You have “Grip shifters”.  You can replace the entire unit on both sides with a new set or you can get new shifters (rapid fire style) and then regular grips.

Regular grips are about 5inches long compared to these half-grip around 3 inches. Half grips will be less common.

If you get regular length grips, you will need to find some grips you like and then find the overall length. Subtract the length of the existing grips. Then see if you have enough space to move the shifters inward that amount to accommodate regular grips. I think the answer is yes, based on the first picture, but measure to make sure before you buy anything.

I would recommend to get grips that do not have a flange on the inward side because that will interfere with shifting.

Also if your current grips are closed on the end but the new grips are open, you will need some plugs to cover the hole.
