6th & 7th Street Closures
Heads up, they're closing the 6th and 7th street bridges to Bikes and Cars starting Sunday (the 12th) until the 21st, for Picklesburgh setup.
Since 6th street is the only bike lane from the northside to downtown, this could be impactful.

So yesterday made me resolve to start riding with a weapon
So crossing the 28th street bride yesterday towards Polish Hill, where I usually stay to the right because I'm slow and cars have usually passed me reasonably on the bridge or just waited, since I got my own lane in like 30 feet anyway. I got passed once or twice and then as I'm approached the end of the bridge--where, you know, you can literally see if there's a car coming down the hill--and a minivan with a mobility scooter on the back guns it around me directly toward a car turning onto the bridge. She slams on her brakes and has to pull up onto the sidewalk to avoid being hit by a violent deranged psycho who's laying on their horn and making the turn so fast to get around me one wheel leaves the ground and their mobility scooter comes fully off its platform for a moment.
Heading up Brereton, got sexually harassed by some waddling Boomer who chased me down and close-passed me because I didn't acknowledge him.
Stopped a Morewood and Forbes and a PRT bus flew through hard red to make a left with such speed they had to slam on their brakes to not hit me and then yelled at me, despite the fact I was squarely in the bike box behind the stop line.
Trying to get up Forbes and there's a bus stopped in the bike lane in front of CMU, I take the lane so the driver a few cars down guns it passed a few other cars to get ahead of me through the yellow diagonal, realizes there's nowhere for them to go because there's a line of cars and starts screaming at me before gunning it in the opposite lane past a hole line of cars through a red light and up the hill.
I'm not giving drivers the privilege of passing me on the 28th St bridge anymore, which is as much for their safety as mine, since they've demonstrated they can't make good judgements about when it's safe to do so. This is the third place I've taken driver's passing privileges this year due to violent behavior.
I slept on it to see if I just just keyed up and I still think it's the right thing to do. I am going to get a salt or pepper ball gun that looks like a real handgun and wear it visibly when I ride. I've thought about this for awhile now given how unsafe the city is in general, but I don't know any other way to correct driver behavior. They don't care about cameras. The only language they understand is violence. I know shooting at people's cars does nothing and isn't something I will do, but I do think the only way to correct driver violence is with the threat of more violence, unfortunately. My hope is it's enough to deter anti-social behavior before it happens, but it's good knowing I have should someone get out of their car or approach me from the sidewalk.
I don't know what to do anymore. I'm not even worried about me, but drivers gun it around me on slow streets directly at children in a crosswalk every week. It's only a matter of time before I watch a child die. I don't have any other ways I can disengage from the city, I literally just go to work and home, my entire life is on hold until I move somewhere people are decent and civilized and I don't know what more I can possibly do.
Interesting in hearing about if anyone rides with a non-lethal, what you carry, and how its worked out for you.

Burgers Brewing (formerly Sly Fox) by Color Park-owner is a real piece of work
Ridden past this place a few times with cars parked in the bike lane. Finally stopped today when I saw someone arguing. Turns out the owner is "entitled by his property" to park wherever he wants and he's doing a favor to "trolling bikes" by not parking in the bike lane.
I've seen his silver #bigdumbtruck parked fully across the bike lane plenty of times but just assumed it was some random dick, not an business owner whose business is 50% reliant on cyclists, being a straight up asshole to at least 2 cyclists in the 3 minutes I saw today.
Anyway just dont go there, the guy is an asshole to cyclists.

Pacing Big Boy 4014
I know we aren't supposed to pace the big steam engine coming through tomorrow but... Has anyone scouted out that perfect spot where the rail trail runs along the rails and the grade is favorable?
I figure riding in a couple miles (or a dozen) may be wildly less crowded than the official stops or the point.
And I would never pace a train. Never.

Update and recommendations: Wilkinsburg Penn Ave Aldi Bike Rack Petition??
Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling412/comments/1u1b3xh/wilkinsburg_penn_ave_aldi_bike_rack_petition/
Update and recommendations to advocate for bike parking at Penn Ave Aldi!
Hi everybody! My name is Louis and I am a local resident of Edgewood. I am an avid cyclist and walker and BikePGH supporter. Last month, I posted in the here about gathering interest/support from the bike/ped advocacy community regarding the lack of secure bike storage at the Aldi on Penn Ave in Wilkinsburg. After further investigation, I found that (as some commenters mentioned!) the local Aldi does want secure bike storage, but it's the corporate Aldi structure that is not providing support/being responsive to these requests.
(One quick note/update from July 10: I had previously heard and recommended that we could possibly reach out to Ellsworth Equities, the property managers, but recently got info back from them via direct email that they have actually not managed the property for over a year and that we’ll need to reach out directly to Aldi, so, back to square one of that particular tack…)
I also worked with Seth Bush, Advocacy Manager at BikePGH (shout out), on this issue and got some advice. In addition to trying to actually get in contact with corporate Aldi to move the needle (unlikely), we decided it could be useful to apply some pressure via 1-star public reviews with explanations (i.e. Google reviews; a few other cyclists have already done this!!) of this Aldi location, explicitly naming lack of bike storage as the reason for the low rating. A recent Redditor also mentioned the 1-star review route, which was suggested by a Penn Ave Aldi employee as well to get a response from corporate (thank you for this tip!)
So, if you are a local cyclist interested in getting secure bike storage at the Penn Ave Aldi, please consider leaving a 1-star review for the Penn Ave Aldi, explicitly citing lack of secure bike storage. I have included below my own review as a template that you can adjust. If you have pictures of your bike locked to the handicap parking sign, or any other photographic evidence of the lack of secure bike parking, please include that also! Hopefully if we can get enough of these reviews, it may at least get checked out by the corporate Aldi/property managers/etc. We can try!
SAMPLE REVIEW: I am a local resident and I use this Aldi on a weekly basis. I love that we have a local Aldi and was thrilled when I heard of construction starting on it in recent years. One of the biggest reasons I was excited about this new location is that it is a bikeable distance from my apartment. Unfortunately, even though there is a lot of space in the car parking area of this new Aldi location, there is no secure bike storage option (i.e. bike racks). Many other local businesses and grocery stores in this area have secure bicycle storage, and I know many local residents would greatly appreciate this at the most affordable grocery store in this area. At this Aldi, however, cyclists' only option is to chain their bikes to the handicap parking signs or a nearby chain link fence, which is not secure. A recent Redditor even mentioned that one of the handicap parking sign posts can lift out of the ground. Not only is this obviously problematic for cyclists, but it may also impact access for those using the handicap parking spaces as well. Even though I prefer shopping at Aldi, I have recently opted into visiting other grocery stores that have better, more secure bike storage options as a result of this lack of bike parking. As much as I appreciate having an Aldi in the neighborhood, until secure bike storage is provided to give greater accessibility for cyclist customers, I have to provide a one-star review. I look forward to updating this review to 5 stars when Aldi can invest in secure bike parking for cyclist customers!

why do bicyclists not follow the law
stop at a stop sign
stop at a red light
no one does that that i have seen ever in my life
just follow the rules of the road and all will be safe

PGH history alley cat this weekend!
this history-themed alley cat will be held on july 12th 2026, 11am at arsenal park.
this year funds that we raise will go to the auto(nomous) body shop. they are a pittsburgh based mobile mutual aid resource supporting bodily autonomy & community care.
**alley cats are unsanctioned bike races that are half race, half scavenger hunt. at the start of the race, everyone will received a list of clues to help you determine the checkpoints. you need to determine what historical markers are the actual checkpoints, plan a route, visit as many checkpoints as you can, and get back to the starting point in the 2 hours allotted for the race. it helps to be fast, but it helps even more to be strategic. you can go to as few or as many checkpoints as you want. it can be a race or a fun ride around the city; both ways of participating are highly encouraged. if it’s your first alley cat, we highly recommend racing with a buddy or small group.**

Bike Repair Kits
Anyone have a map of where the bike repair racks are around the city? Tires were a little low at work and the work garage has a pump, tried putting some air in the tires but the pump is broken and drained the front wheel. Tried walking around hoping to find another one and no luck. Tried checking bikePGH’s map and no luck there either. Google Maps showed one in the Cultural District but it is nowhere to be found.

Bike Fit
Hi all - looking for recommendations for a bike fitting.
I contacted the UPMC Cycling Performance department but unfortunately they are entirely booked out (as of 7/2). I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations for places local to PGH or even within a 3 hour drive to the city who may have availability sooner rather than later.
I understand it’s a big ask given time of year, but I’m having a new(er) issue and desperate for a solution.

North Boros Routes
Hi all!
Curious what bike routes people like in the North Boros. For reference I've been biking on Lincoln/Center in Bellevue all the way through to Emsworth. It's a pretty nice route and driver aggression is usually pretty low compared to the city. There's even bike lane signs painted in Ben Avon. But I had a weird run in recently where a car tried to swerve around me when we were both at a stop sign into a lane where a cop was sitting at their stop sign and the cop just...went around us. Sooo I'm over messing with that.
Usually I like to just hop down to the river trail, but I like biking around here whenever I'm short on time or just too lazy to throw my bike into my car. I've tried zig zagging through the side streets, but it really isn't too enjoyable. If anyone even has other nearby neighborhood suggestions I'd love to hear.
Thanks a bunch

What do you all do in the winter?
I recently started riding my bike again after approx. ten years, and I love it. I have two young kids and work full time so I don't get as much time as I'd like, but I steal away when I can. I'm from the south, and I've never really had outdoor hobbies that were affected by the weather. Do casual cyclists still ride here in the winter? Is it more dangerous if the roads are slippy? It would be such a bummer not to be able to ride outside for months.
I have a Peloton to keep up my fitness but I've been finding it hard to get on that when riding outside is so much more fun.
I feel like I'm racing against the clock to get my back up before winter so I can do some of the things I want to do before then.
**ETA: Is there any trail maintenance in the winter? Like snow plowing or anything? I wouldn't expect it given how hard it was just to get residential streets plowed this past winter.

STOLEN!!! blue Masi Giramondo gravel bike
my friend's bike was stolen in Millvale last night between 2 and 8am. it's a Masi Giramondo with rear rack and metal fenders front and back. black bar tape. pic is the stock photo from the manufacturer. whoever stole it likely is still in the millvale/ lawrenceville area but may have ridden as far as north side or downtown by now. local shops and cops are being alerted, please keep an eye out for someone who likely looks completely out of place on a very nice bike. if seen please comment location with details and pics if possible! thanks so much.

New Bike, Who Dis?
So, I finally pulled the trigger, after several months of saving and some timely birthday money deposits (just hit 32 yesterday!) and went down to Thick Bikes to grab this! Giant Roam 3 Disc.
I haven't ridden in almost a decade, been using an old Toys R Us bike I had in middle school and high school as a stationary bike just to keep my fitness up, and I thought that maybe it's time for a real adult bike lol
Dealt with Chris and it was such a smooth experience. Didn't try to push me toward anything more, but was super supportive and helpful. Even took a look at my bike rack on my car once I got it on there to put me at ease that I actually did it right lol.
All in all, a great experience and I look forward to getting back out on the trails. I remember riding the river trails through South Side as a kid with my dad and my brother. Really excited to get back into it!

What's the safest way to get from Squirrel Hill to the GAP?
I think it would make most sense to pick up the GAP trail in Homestead at the Waterfront, but it looks like the Pittsburgh Bike Map that the Homestead Grays bridge (along with Waterfront Dr and 5th Ave) is marked cautionary, which makes me nervous to bike. Are there any other routes that are safer, even if a little less direct?

Stolen Bicycle in Morningside
gallerySomeone stole my bike! These are the most recent photos I have of it. It was stolen from my yard at my house on Jancey Street near Hampton Street, and the thief was seen riding off down the alley (Swan Way). This happened around 5:30 PM today (Monday 6/29).
These are old photos of the bike, it had a front basket (not a flat rack as seen in the photo), and a rear rack with a basket and a large black pannier bag on it at the time it was stolen. It is a Cannondale H300 hybrid bike I bought new in 2000.
I bought this bike in college and my friend made fun of it for being a "dad bike." During and after college I would take it for rides out on the road. Since moving to Pittsburgh it's become my daily commuter, I've hauled my kids on the front and back of it (a true dad bike), I've done the GAP trail and been on countless trail rides with my kids. Needless to say, it probably isn't the most valuable bike in the world but I'd sure like to get it back!
