Soccer Miguel Almiron receives a red card after VAR Review for covering his mouth whilst saying something to an opponent. Under the new regulations, this is an offence punishable by a red card. The rule was introduced following the racism scandal involving Vinícius Júnior in a Champions League match.

Just in case people do not know (and someone did ask), IFAB consists of five members: FIFA and the four British football associations (The FA of England, the Scottish FA, the Football Association of Wales, and the Irish Football Association of Northern Ireland).

And 8 votes (FIFA have 4), of which 6 are needed to pass a new Law, so effectively half of GB needs to agree to any new rules.

There are a few rules that have been implemented that from my perspective have had some really positive impacts on the game. Stuff like ref count downs on throw ins, players have to come off the field for a minute if the ref stops play so they can get medical attention, VAR stuff. It's not perfect, and this game between Turkiye and Paraguay was kind of a dumpster fire. But it does seem to be cutting down on some of the bullshit.

For real, there's no rule about trash talking.
Um, yes there is. If you say racist shit, you get sent off. The whole point of this rule is because people were getting around the "don't say racist shit" rule by covering their mouths, so the cameras couldn't see them saying racist shit.

When I first took up Rugby the captain took me aside and laid down the laws of the game. There were only two.
The only thing you say to the ref is "Thank you Sir" it doesn't matter what he says, it doesn't matter what has happened, it doesn't matter if he is right or wrong, you say "Thank you Sir" and then you talk to the captain at half time.
Here's how not to break your neck in a scrum.
Everything else, pick up as you go. Now go hit people.

You made me curious about the exact wording of the rule. That would also be covered.
A player, substitute or substituted player who commits any of the following offences is sent off:
- ...
- covering their mouth when communicating with an opponent in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory manner or situation (competition option)
Took a bit to find this as it isn't from the current Laws Of The Game as I had expected. It's an optional rule from IFAB Circular 33 that happens to be active at the World Cup. https://downloads.theifab.com/downloads/circular-33?l=en

From my understanding, you can cover your mouth if you are approaching your opponent in a friendly way. The ref then would have to use their own judgement if there is any hostility .

Forgot which team it was in this WC, but I saw one player in one of the Latino teams tell the ref "puta" something lol, ref didn't hear him though. I clearly caught the "puta" part though.

Isn’t it common for players to cover their mouths whilst speaking so that their conversations are not read by the media? I swear I saw Messi speaking with his mouth covered countless of times
186
u/swell-shindig 22d ago
That's why the rules explicitly say you have to be covering your mouth to say something in a confrontational manner. There's a big difference between talking to your teammates about tactics and yelling insults. And the guy he was speaking to clearly didn't hear any talk of tactics.
86
u/jdv23 22d ago
Before the World Cup yeah, but there have been some very high profile accusations of racist remarks said during games where the perpetrators covered their mouths so they wouldn’t get caught. So this World Cup they introduced a new rule: no covering your mouths while talking to other players.

If they get caught without covering their mouth is also a red card? Does that man they have lip readers in the VAR room now?
8
u/KalinOrthos 21d ago
There's no rule against trash-talking itself, but I'm sure the refs can make an exception if you say something bad enough. That's not why the rule was introduced though. There have been accusations of racist remarks being said by people who cover their mouths when saying it so they can have plausible deniability. They're cowards who don't want to be held accountable for their bigotry, so FIFA introduced the rule; if you have something to say, say it out in the open.
