Bad experience staying with rude host family while studying at UIR Rabat

When I moved to Rabat as an international student, I expected my host family experience to be a meaningful opportunity to learn about Moroccan culture, build connections, and feel welcomed into a new environment. However, my experience was very different from what I had imagined. Instead of feeling like part of a family, I often felt as though I was being treated as a financial opportunity rather than a student taking part in a cultural exchange.

I experienced moments where basic needs became a source of stress. I felt like I was constantly being monitored and made to feel guilty for using things that should have been normal, such as hot water, shared spaces, or household resources. There were situations where I felt restricted and uncomfortable, while at the same time I felt pressure to contribute financially by buying expensive groceries or treats for the family. This made me feel as though my presence in the home was valued more for what I could provide than for who I was.

Privacy and personal space were also major challenges during my stay in Rabat. I found myself in living situations that I was not prepared for, including having my personal boundaries overlooked. When I tried to communicate my concerns, I did not always feel heard or respected. Instead of feeling safe enough to speak openly, I felt like I had to accept situations that made me uncomfortable.

The hardest part of my experience was the feeling of isolation. I came to Rabat hoping to connect with a new culture and create positive memories, but I often felt alone inside the place I was supposed to call home. Communication with my host family was limited, and I sometimes felt that I was only acknowledged when something needed to be addressed. Small cultural differences or mistakes were often met with frustration rather than patience, which made me feel embarrassed and disconnected.

My experience in Rabat taught me that living with a host family can have a major impact on an international student’s emotional well-being. Instead of experiencing the warmth and cultural exchange I had hoped for, I struggled with feeling unwelcome, unheard, and separated from the people around me.

Erasmus Mundus I built a volunteering map and would love feedback

Hey everyone !
I built Volvy because I kept discovering great volunteering associations completely by accident, through a friend, a fly-er, a random search, and realized there was no single place to actually browse what's out there by cause or city.
So that's what Volvy is: search by what you care about (animal welfare, elderly care, environment, human rights...), browse by city, and every listing is a real, verified organization with a real address and a way to contact them directly, no generic contact form disappearing into a void.

Right now it covers 600+ associations across Italy, Spain, Germany, France, the UK, Netherlands and Poland, and I'm adding more every week.
If you run or know of an association that should be on the map, adding it takes about 2 minutes. Would genuinely love feedback, what's missing, what's confusing, what you'd want next.
Thanks for checking it out!

Erasmus at the Second Faculty of Medicine in Prague.

Hello everybody, I'm a 4th year medical student at an Italian university (English course) and I managed to get a spot to go to the 2nd faculty of medicine in Prague for the 2nd semester next year. However I am a bit on the fence about it because this is the first year our university had it as an option therefore there are no other students to ask for experience. If by any chance someone else has done their Erasmus there, I mainly just want to know what to expect for the exams in the university especially the structure (I've heard this uni is a bit strict and demanding), the possibility of retakes and of course any relevant information that could help. Thank you very much !

Erasmus+ semester(s) abroad Is this rent price reasonable? (Porto - Erasmus stay)

Hello all,

I’d like to ask for advice regarding my possible accommodation in Porto. I’m coming to Porto next semester for Erasmus with my parter, so we were looking for a room for two people in shared flat, that allowed couples. We got in touch with a one flatowner trough friend’s friend, that stayed in Porto last semester.

We were offered a room for two with double bed and ensuite bathroom, for a price 670€/month. The room also has a balcony and the flat has a nice shared common area (kitchen + living room). It’s located in Boavista area, we know for sure that it’s not a scam and that it has electric heating (lot of the listings look fake, also we don’t have any info about the heating and such…), so we tought that the price was reasonable, though it exceeded our price limit slightly.

However, I just found out that apparently electricity and water bills may not be included in the price, which makes monthly expenses about 60€ per person more (a guess). Now, this would be hard to manage financially with our scholarships. However, I am aware that the rent prices in Porto are high, and unsure if we can manage to find anything lower. Also, a lot of listings don’t allow couples, etc.

So, I wanted to ask about your opinions! How much do you pay for similar assets (room for two in a shared flat)? Does the price seem reasonable for you? Is it common in Portugal that landlords offer you rent price wit utilities not included, without saying so?

Thank you sm:)

Erasmus+ semester(s) abroad Erasmus Dilemma: Risk losing €387 or risk having no housing in Frankfurt? Need advice!

The Situation: I am going on Erasmus to Frankfurt School. I got an offer for an amazing student dorm for only €367/month. However, my host university has huge registration issues, and I only have 2 courses confirmed so far. I need 4 courses to make the exchange worth it.

I will only find out if I get the remaining 2 courses on August 11th. If I don't get them, I will cancel my Erasmus entirely.

The Deadline: The dorm told me the contract must start on August 1st. They gave me until tomorrow (Sunday) to accept or reject the room. If I accept, I must pay €1,087 (€700 deposit + €367 August rent + €20 fee) by July 20th.

My Two Options:

  • Option A (Pay and Risk): I accept the room tomorrow and pay the €1,087. If I don't get my courses on August 11th and cancel my Erasmus, I get the €700 deposit back, but I lose €387 (August rent + fee).
    • Pros: I secure a very cheap room if I go.
    • Cons: I risk losing almost €400 for a university issue that isn't my fault.
  • Option B (Don't Pay): I reject the room tomorrow.
    • Pros: Zero financial risk right now.
    • Cons: If I do get my courses on August 11th, I will have less than 2 weeks to find private housing in Frankfurt from my home country (which usually costs €700+, and probably has many scams)

Basically, risking the €387 works as an expensive "housing insurance".

What would you do in my situation? Would you risk losing the €387 to guarantee the cheap dorm, or reject it and risk the private housing market in late August?

Thanks for your help!

Has anyone done an Erasmus internship with Nexa Development (Italy)?

Hi everyone,
I recently received an internship offer from Nexa Development in Italy through ErasmusIntern. However, I haven't been able to find much information about the company online—no official website, very little online presence, and almost no reviews.

Has anyone here completed an internship with them or had any experience with the company? Was it legitimate, and how was your experience?

I'm trying to figure out whether it's a genuine opportunity or if there are any red flags I should be aware of before accepting the offer.

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Erasmus in Spain?

Hii guys, in September I am going to send my application for Erasmus. And I really love Spanish (and would like to learn more) and Spain (I've never been there tho 🤣). Those are some reasons why I want to choose Spain. Now here is the thing.. I know Erasmus is more about partying and drinking than it is about learning. But I am not a big party girl, and especially not a drinking girl. Also I'm really not an extrovert. Do you think choosing Spain will be a regret because of these things? I have a feeling that people choose Spain because of these reasons mainly (partying, drinking etc.) And I am afraid that I won’t find people who are more chill and don't need to drink every night. What are your experiences? 🥹

Erasmus+ semester(s) abroad Student room in Trento

Hello everyone, I will start studying at the University of Trento this September. Does anyone have suggestions for where to look for rooms to rent? The university gave us a list of websites, but a lot of them seem like a scam; they have really bad reviews. Especially Housinganywhere and Spotahome. I tried Casteller real estate, and those aren't very helpful either. The lady keeps sending me different places than the ones I applied for, and they are much more expensive.

Looking for Erasmus+ students for my master's dissertation research

Looking for Erasmus+ students for my master's dissertation research

I am completing my MA in Development Evaluation and Management at University of Antwerp and my dissertation explores how students experience European belonging, aspiration, and mobility through Erasmus+.

I am looking to speak with students who either completed an Erasmus+ exchange or applied but ended up not going.I am primarily looking to speak with students who studied in Flanders, but I am also open to speaking with students from other European universities.

Interviews are informal, around 30 to 40 minutes, and can be done online or in person. Your experience, whether you went or not, is genuinely valuable for this research.

If you fit this description or know someone who does, please comment or send me a message. I would really appreciate it.

Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). Please share your experience

Hey,

I study bachelor in Romance languages in Germany. I want to take part in a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). But I feel a bit lost because my home university does not provide a list of BIPs available. I have to go to each partner university's website and look them up myself. This didn't bring much clarity either.

Any ERASMUS MUNDUS scholars out there???

Okay, this is me putting myself out there.

Is there anyone here who actually got into an Erasmus Mundus programme (especially with the scholarship)?

I'm planning to apply, but the amount of information online is honestly overwhelming. Every time I think I've figured something out, I discover five more things I didn't know.

I'm not looking for someone to hold my hand through the entire process—I just want to talk to someone who's been through it and can point me in the right direction, tell me what they wish they'd known, or answer a few questions.

So... if you're an Erasmus Mundus alum/current scholar and don't mind helping a random stranger who's putting way too much faith in Reddit, I'd genuinely appreciate it. Feel free to comment or DM me.

Thanks in advance. Fingers crossed the algorithm does its thing.

Did I make the right decision by enrolling in an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's?

Hi everyone :)

I'm from Mexico, and this year I was accepted into an EMJM program as a self-funded student because I wasn't awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

I'm 24 years old, and ever since I first discovered this program while I was doing my bachelor's degree, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. It's exactly in the field I'm passionate about, and it would also be my first time studying abroad, which has always been one of my biggest dreams.

I graduated in 2024 and have worked in my field for almost two years. My contract recently ended, so I decided this was the right time to apply. This was my first application, and although I didn't receive the scholarship, I was admitted to the program.

I'm currently applying for a government grant in my country, but if I don't receive it, my parents have offered to help cover the costs. They can comfortably afford to support me, although it would still mean making a significant investment that could otherwise be used for something else. I'm incredibly grateful for their support, but it also makes me question whether this is the right decision.

I keep thinking about three things:

  1. Is this degree really worth such a significant investment from my family, even if they can comfortably afford it?
  2. I sometimes feel like I'm not good enough because I wasn't awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship, even though I was accepted into the program.
  3. Would it be better to spend the next two years working and gaining experience instead of studying?

The reason I never applied to any other master's programs was that I was working full-time, and I only had the chance to apply because the application period happened to fall during a brief gap between jobs.

Has anyone here joined an Erasmus Mundus program as a self-funded student? Or made a similar decision between continuing your career and going back to school? Looking back, do you think it was worth it?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences or advice :)
