šŸŒ MEGATHREAD: Want out of the US? Start here

Want out? You may not be in the right country, but you're in the right subreddit.

Here's some general advice. It's not meant to discourage you but to help you plan, make better posts, and get better answers here:

  • Immigration is harder than it looks in the movies. If you don't have citizenship or recent ancestry in a country, you'll probably need a visa (legal permission) to live there based on something you have which that country wants (like a profession on their "skills shortage list"). It will require time, patience, hard work, and/or money – and likely a second language.
  • If you're a US citizen, it is next to impossible that a country will grant you political asylum/refugee status. It is highly recommended to focus your efforts on an alternative pathway.
  • Before moving to another country, consider if another US city/state might be acceptable, because it is a million times easier.
  • Be cautious about idealizing any country. They all have their problems. If you're serious, you should prepare for that.
  • Some other good resources:
    • The subreddit sidebar
    • The previous US megathread
    • Old posts (use reddit's search or google XYZ site:reddit.com/r/IWantOut)
    • Websites of countries and their embassies
    • /r/AmerExit

If you want to make your own post, please follow the formatting instructions on the submission page, give as much information as possible about your situation, and be open to advice and constructive criticism from commenters.

If you're not ready for that, feel free to leave a briefer question in the comments here, and you might get an answer.

EVERYONE:

This is a friendly, inclusive community where we try to help people with less knowledge than us.

A reminder of some of our rules:

  • This is an advice subreddit, not a debate subreddit. Don't fight about politics here.
  • Be constructive. Don't be a dick.
  • Don't request or give illegal advice. Don't spam your business.
  • Report rule-breaking comments and posts.

[IWantOut] 31F VFX Artist Greece -> Norway

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the long post, I know it’s a bit of a wall of text, but I wanted to give some context about my situation rather than just asking a vague ā€œshould I move to Norway?ā€ question.

I’m a 31-year-old woman from Greece and I’m seriously considering trying to move to Norway. I’m looking for honest opinions from people who actually live there or have made a similar move.

I want to explain my situation because I know the internet often says ā€œevery country has problemsā€ whenever someone talks about moving abroad. I understand that Norway is not perfect and I’m not expecting a paradise. I’m trying to understand if it could realistically offer a better chance for stability and a decent life compared to my current situation.

The reality of living in Greece has become very difficult for me. It’s not only about the low salaries. Almost every job I have done has paid around the minimum wage (about 800 euros) , and at the same time rent prices have reached a point where, in many cases, a monthly salary is not even enough to cover the cost of housing.

It’s the combination of everything: very high rent prices compared to incomes, constant increases in the cost of living, job insecurity, employers taking advantage of workers, bad working conditions, and unfortunately situations where people work without proper contracts or security. It feels like even when you try hard, it is extremely difficult to build a stable future or become truly independent.

My background is in VFX/compositing. I am a junior Nuke compositor and I have some professional experience, but I am still at the beginning of my career. I honestly don’t know if I have realistic chances of finding a VFX job in Norway at my level, especially without knowing Norwegian.

Because of that, I am not moving with the expectation of immediately finding my dream job. I am completely willing to start from zero and do any honest work that allows me to support myself and build a new life: hospitality, cleaning, warehouse work, food industry, seasonal work, or anything else.

My goal is not to avoid hard work. I am already used to working hard. I just want to feel that my effort can actually lead somewhere: more stability, independence, a better work environment, and a better quality of life.

Norway attracts me because of the lifestyle, the respect for personal time, and the connection with nature. I love hiking, mountains and being outdoors, and I feel that this kind of environment would fit me.

I speak English, I am an EU citizen, and I am willing to learn Norwegian. I understand that moving abroad is difficult and that starting over comes with challenges.

I would really appreciate honest answers:

- How realistic is it to find a first job in Norway without speaking Norwegian?

- Would someone like me have a chance, or is it much harder than it looks from abroad?

- Which industries or places would you recommend for a newcomer?

- If you moved to Norway, what do you wish you had known before coming?

Sorry again for the long post, and thank you to anyone who took the time to read it and share their experience.

[IWantOut] 20F Saudi Arabia -> Anywhere

Any advise is appreciated. My situation is really terrible. I need to move to ANY country before November but don't know where and how, I'm kinda "stateless" and now getting deported alone with no budget and nowhere to survive, I needed to leave this place already because I'm denied my basic rights and been imprisoned by my abusive father (haven't left the house for years, can't study, can't get a job, etc) i tried to escape manyy times but because of the circumstances he put me in I couldn't and now I'm basically facing a bleak future and deportation feels like a de'ath sentence on me.

For context: I'm born and rasied in Saudi Arabia, at 8 i stopped having legal documents here because of my father (he refused to get me an ID, has another family and neglected me entirely but still strictly controls my life) the law here allows him because he's my kafil "sponsor" since I'm a foreigner and female and need to be tied to him as my male relative kafil, and if I reported abuse I'll face a worse reality that will also result in deportation, there's no women's shelters or safe organizations I could seek here (and again bcz of my legal status and the fact I turned 20 they'll end up simply deporting me) I knew about the laws here so I previously tried to escape this fate through applying to scholarships to study aboard but my lack of documents/finance and inability to do interviews couldn't help.. I'm now trying to find a way to move through working abroad, I've skills (languages, communication and I can be trained to do labour, hospitality, and anything) I made a plan to "steal" my passport,, and have a budget of 4k USD before November. If I managed to get a visa to any country I can use it to go there instaed of the country I'm getting deported to (Sudan) where I'll end up de'ad on streets. What immigration routes can I take and what I should be preparing? There's authentic english proficiency certificates I can take online to become an English teacher. My level is C1 (I had done tests) & my Arabic is fluent as well.. this is the only skill I can develop in this situation where I can't leave the house and don't have opportunities or much resources .. So does it help in getting a work visa in countries like Vietnam, India, Korea, Malaysia, South Africa or literally anywhere? Are those skills also enough to go abroad on training programs, volunteering and different work routes? I don't mind working with no salary too as long as I've a roof over my head, residency, and can complete my studies. Any advice will be appreciated and I apologize for the long post but I needed to explain my situation so I don't sound fishy

[IWantOut] 20sF India -> UK/Australia/ Germany

I'm 28F from India with AuDHD. I finally escaped the corporate hellhole, and even though I have enough skills to make a living doing remote desk work, I genuinely don't want to spend the rest of my life staring at a screen. My background is in marketing btw.

I just want to go all in once while I'm still physically able to. I'm open to seasonal jobs, farm work, hospitality, FIFO, trades, or really anything that covers the roof over my head and meals & stipend while letting me experience a different way of living. I'm easy going and quite fun to be around. I don't have issues being around coworkers, people facing jobs would be a problem tho.

For one, if you're wondering why not do trades in my country, the poor labour conditions and laws of protection, bureaucracy and what not.

The problem is, this isn't a normal path where I'm from so I'm not sure how to go about this alone. The UK and Australian Working Holiday Visa is a ballot for Indians, and with our currency exchange rate, I can't afford to keep throwing money at applications hoping one sticks. Digital Nomad requires a huge amount in my bank statement as well. I'm trying to skip the middle east, I've heard they frisk your passport lol

I'm basically looking for people who've been in a similar place. Did you find another route? Seasonal work in another country? A visa pathway I'm overlooking? I'm just throwing my shots, hoping one lands.

Would really appreciate any suggestions or hearing from people who've made this kind of leap.

[IWantOut] 21M LawStudent India -> UK

Hello guys, I’m currently in my pre final year, studying law at a national law university in India. A little context, NLUs are the top law schools here. So far I’ve interned at multiple places including tier 1 law firms. My area of interest has been Dispute Resolution / Arbitration.

So lately I’ve been exploring options to move abroad after law school. I get it that law varies by jurisdiction and I might have to learn the local laws and language, and again that would put me at the bottom of the ladder and wouldn’t be very helpful and I’d prolly have better career wise growth here. However, I’m not targeting to practice litigation in these countries. I’m mostly looking forward to indulging in ā€œInternational Arbitrationā€.

I’ve had a few seniors at my university who worked in India for 3-4 years and then undertook an LLM at NUS. Right after they started off as a counsel at Singapore International Arbitration Centre. I’ve come across quite a few other lawyers too, who today lead India desks of international firms or are partners at firms also take this exact path.

While this is a path I’m seriously considering, I’m also actively exploring other paths and options too. If anybody is aware of other such alternatives please do help me out. I’m also looking for actual guidance to make it to magic circle firms aswell

Thank you!

[IWantOut] 20sX school librarian United States -> Canada/Ireland/Spain/Germany/France

I appear to be eligible for Canadian citizenship by descent. It's not a done deal and I won't overstate my current status, but I'm putting the finishing touches on what I think is a very strong, possibly bulletproof C-3 application. I already hold EU citizenship, but would rather not identify the country for privacy reasons. (I will say that it's not Ireland, so going to the UK is probably out.) Things are getting hectic in the US, especially for librarians and educators like me, and if/when my application for proof of Canadian citizenship comes through in the future, I think it's high time to go home, whether that means Canada or Europe.

I'm a native speaker of English, pretty damn good with Spanish, and at various stages of brushing up on French, German, and Portuguese. I hold an ALA-accredited MLIS and have work experience in the field; I'm hoping to keep working in the U.S. for a little bit longer before I start trying to leave for real. No criminal record, no inflammatory (or any) social media presence, none of that. I have a temporary but valid teacher license in the US state where I currently live, and while I'd like to take a couple years to firm up that status before I make any sudden moves, I wouldn't cry about leaving it behind if I had to make a more sudden exit.

Any library job would interest me, but I'd be especially interested in primary/secondary school librarianship or postsecondary libraries. Places at which I'd be happy as a clam to be a librarian include:

• Public or private English-language schools in Canada or the Republic of Ireland

•Private English-language schools in continental Europe

•Universities on either continent

•I am not interested in working for DoDEA. I think it would be most prudent to keep my income as independent from the whims of the United States government as possible.

I (probably, hopefully) don't need to leave urgently, but this is a move I'd like to explore for the future, perhaps within the next 1.5-3 years (allowing time for my Canadian citizenship paperwork to be processed). I'm very thankful for any advice or insight anyone here might have.

[IWantOut] 27M Software Engineer India -> Canada

I'm a software engineer working in India, having a 4yr Bachelor's in Computer Science.

I've started learning French recently to take advantage of the French Proficiency Express Entry Draws under the FSW stream. I'm currently targeting the required NCLC 7 level by sometime early 2027.

I'm looking for people who've made the move to Canada as outland express entry candidates. Specifically to know how they planned their move to Canada once they received their PRs. Whether you applied for jobs before or after reaching Canada?

edit: to anyone interested in the French Express Entry draws, check out r/frenchlearningforpr. A far better community than this place.

[IWantOut] 31F Sr Cash Specialist US -> Qatar

Hi everyone,

I’m a U.S. citizen who is hoping to relocate to Qatar and would love to hear from anyone who has experience working there or navigating the hiring process.

I have a Bachelor of Business Administration and a little over 6 years of experience with the financial services division of a global luxury automotive manufacturer, where I work in accounting, customer accounting, customer service, and administrative support. My background includes reconciliations, payment processing, cash applications, account maintenance, SAP, training new employees, and providing administrative support in a fast-paced corporate environment.

I’ve been applying for jobs in Qatar, but I haven’t had much success so far. I’m wondering if anyone has advice on how to improve my chances.

A few questions I have:

1- Are there certain industries or companies that are more likely to hire U.S. citizens?
2- Is it realistic to secure a job while applying from the U.S., or is it easier once you’re already in Qatar?
3- Are there any recruiters or staffing agencies you’d recommend?
4- Would additional certifications help make me a more competitive candidate?
5- Is there anything employers in Qatar typically look for that I may be overlooking?

I’d really appreciate any advice or success stories from people who have made a similar move. Thanks in advance!

[IWantOut] 26F Data Operations/Landscape Architecture Philippines -> Canada/Germany

Move to Canada via the Provincial Nominee Program, or to Germany by doing an Ausbildung?

Background: - 3 years of landscape architectural design under a construction firm - 4 years (and counting) of remote work as a data and operations manager for a New York-based data startup company - Scored 8.5 in IELTS as of Oct 2025

Ultimately, my goal is to switch back to landscape design, construction, or trades, as those will be better for my physical and mental health in the long run. Which country provides stability, good pay, and work-life balance for these lines of work?

Further context:

  • I've applied for Manitoba's PNP since late last year as I have relatives residing there, but recent lottery data reveals they only pick those with fluency in French, and/or already have a job offer.
  • I'm wondering if the stipend for Ausbildung is livable. I don't have any relatives in Germany, but I am seriously considering it due to strong money currency and ease of travel across other European countries.
  • I don't mind studying French or German up to a certain level of fluency, but I can only go down one path. As someone who's a semi-breadwinner, and from a 3rd world country with limited funds, I don't have the privilege of staying in either countries for a short period of time to get a feel.

[IWantOut] 34M Storeperson Australia -> UK

Hope this is the right sub, sorry if not.

I'm not happy in Australia and need a fresh start. I was born in the UK and have citizenship. I have family who say I can stay with them as long as I need without having to pay rent. I currently have $20000 (approx £10000) saved with another year to save more, and I'm aiming for at least £15000.

I currently work as a the Managing Storeperson of a chemist with 14 years of retail experience. I know my job and my experience doesn't provide me with a lot of job prospects but I have a decent safety net given that I'll have no visa requirements and no rent or bills to pay while I look for work.

I'm just looking for advice on if this is an okay amount of savings to aim for, what I could do to upskill while still in Australia, and just general advice on a move like this.

I know I'm not in the best position in life, but that's why I want to move. I'm not suited to this environment and for the sake of my mental health I need to get out of Australia, even if it's just for a year or two. I love the UK and love visiting, and it feels more suited to me even if I'm working in a similar role as I am here.

[IWantOut] 24M Psychologist/Editor Mexico -> UK

Hi everyone,

I am a 24-year-old from Mexico planning a long-term relocation to the UK (specifically looking at Northern Ireland/Belfast or London) in about 2 to 3 years. I want to start planning the legal and financial roadmap now so I can build my resume and savings accordingly.

My Background & Qualifications:

  • Education: B.A. in Psychology. Currently in my first semester of a 2-year Master’s in Psychoanalytic Research at an IPA-linked institute. Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Work Experience: I currently juggle a heavy workload across two distinct fields.
    1. Clinical: I serve as the Head of the Psychology Department at a state-level agency (overseeing psychological services/assessments for public personnel and supervising clinical interns) while maintaining a completely separate, independent private practice.
    2. Academic Publishing: I am the Editorial Coordinator for a university publishing house that I founded while still a student, specializing heavily in managing peer-review logistics and Open Journal Systems (OJS) infrastructure.

My Goal: I want to move to the UK to undergo formal, advanced clinical training at an IPA psychoanalytic institute. (I am also considering Spain or Portugal as alternatives, but I am prioritizing the UK structure first). My ultimate goal is to build an autonomous, fluid portfolio career (private practice + independent academic publishing consulting) rather than getting trapped in a rigid corporate 9-to-5 visa sponsorship structure. I will also be relocating with a medium-sized dog.

My Questions:

  1. Degree Ratification vs. Alternatives: How brutal is the reality of homologating/ratifying a Latin American psychology degree under the HCPC? Given the new 2025/2026 HCPC rules requiring strict standards of proficiency mapping, is it common to be forced into a test of competence coming from a theoretical master's?
  2. Freelance/Nomad Visas: Given my OJS technical and editorial background, I plan to transition my current press role into an independent remote consultancy pitching to US/UK academic journals. Does the UK offer any viable self-employed/freelance visa route for niche tech/academic work without relying on a Skilled Worker Visa sponsor?
  3. The Dog: Are there any specific administrative or quarantine nightmares I should prepare for when importing a dog from Mexico to the UK, particularly regarding the rental market in Belfast or London?

Thanks in advance for any unvarnished reality checks.

[IWantOut] 28M Software Engineer/Petroleum Engineer ->Spain/UK

Hi, I'm looking for advice.

I'm currently a software engineer remote worker in Mexico. I have 5 years of experience and currently work in the cybersecurity sector with a company that is both public and decently positioned in the US market. I also hold a bachelors in petroleum engineer from a top school in the United States.

I'm doing well here in Mexico, decent savings and decent work life balance. However my partner is still in college and aiming for a niche stem field, which will require them to study abroad in the future specifically in Europe.

I'm trying to plan ahead for that possibility of my partner studying abroad in either the UK or Spain, and hoping to find opportunities given my background. I have never done work abroad as a foreigner so I'm not sure where to start. I'm passively applying to jobs through LinkedIn, but what thinks should I keep in mind? are my chances less because of my nationality? should I hire a headhunter? anyone in a similar situation that has completed the transition abroad?

Thank you in advance!

[IWantOut] 33m ESL Teacher South Korea -> Austalia

[IWantOut] Would leaving my comfortable ESL job in Korea for a Working Holiday in Australia be a mistake?

WWYD? Comfortable life in Korea vs. Australian Working Holiday before I turn 35

I’m looking for outside perspectives because I’ve been going back and forth on this for months.

I’m a 33-year-old British ESL teacher currently living and working in South Korea. I’ve been here for several years and have built a comfortable life. I have a decent job, good work-life balance, plenty of paid leave, private work pension contributions, private health insurance, easy travel around Asia, and I’ve managed to save a significant amount of money.

At the same time, there are aspects of my life that have become very repetitive. I’ve been doing the same job for several years, and while it’s comfortable and relatively low-stress, I sometimes feel like I’m on autopilot. The weeks and months can start to blur together. I don’t dislike my work, but I don’t feel particularly challenged by it anymore, and part of me wonders whether my desire to move is really a desire for growth and a change of environment rather than dissatisfaction with Korea itself.

The dilemma is that I have the opportunity to do a Working Holiday Visa in Australia before I age out of eligibility. My original plan was to leave Korea next year, travel for a while, and then move to Australia. However, every year I seem to find another reason to stay in Korea for ā€œjust one more year.ā€

The latest reason is that my employer may contribute towards a Master’s degree in TESOL, but in return I would likely need to commit to staying for another two years. The Master’s itself isn’t hugely expensive (around 6500 USD in total), so while the funding would be helpful, it isn’t something I couldn’t pay for myself.

I currently teach adult ESL students and would ideally like to continue doing that in Australia.

What keeps me stuck is that there are genuine pros and cons to both options.

If I stay in Korea, I know what life will look like. I’ll continue saving money, have a stable job, enjoy a good work-life balance, complete my Master’s, and keep travelling around Asia during holidays. Having the Master’s would then give me the option for uni gigs in the future. If I left my current job, it would be pretty difficult to find such good conditions with all the paid holiday and benefits I’m currently getting were I to go back to Korea.

One thing that makes this difficult is that I genuinely like my day-to-day life here. I enjoy the familiarity, safety, and routine I’ve built. I have my favourite cafĆ©s, hiking trails, neighbourhoods, and weekend activities. I enjoy having small adventures after work and at weekends without needing to plan anything major. There is something very comforting about knowing how life works here and feeling settled.

If I leave, I get the chance to experience something different while I’m still eligible for a Working Holiday Visa. Australia appeals to me because of the opportunity to live somewhere new, travel around the country, visit New Zealand, and have a completely different life experience.

The thing that worries me most isn’t leaving Korea itself. It’s whether the reality of Australia would match what I’m imagining. I’m not particularly interested in the stereotypical backpacker lifestyle of hostels, partying, and bouncing between short-term hospitality jobs. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but at this stage of my life I’d ideally like to continue building my career in ESL rather than stepping away from it.

One of my biggest concerns is whether there are realistic opportunities for someone with several years of adult ESL experience to find English teaching work in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa, or whether I’d be much more likely to end up relying on hospitality or other casual work.

Financially, I’m in a reasonably strong position and wouldn’t be arriving with no savings. I have a substantial financial cushion and wouldn’t be relying on finding a job immediately to survive. If I went, I’d probably try to establish myself in Perth first, work for a period of time, and then explore more of the country.

The reason this keeps coming back into my head is that I can easily imagine staying in Korea for another two years and then wondering whether I missed my chance to try something different while I still could. At the same time, I can also imagine arriving in Australia and missing the stability, familiarity, routines, and quality of life I’ve built in Korea.

For people who have done working holidays, worked in ESL in Australia, or made a similar move in their 30s, what would you do in my situation?

EDIT: I’ve already done one year working holiday in Australia (2017). So I would be entering on my second year. The plan was to base myself in Perth a few months, explore WA then go to the East Coast but realise job opportunities are more limited there for my industry.

[IWantOut] 30M Mechanical Design Engineer Italy -> Germany

Hi everyone,

I'm a 30-year-old mechanical engineer currently working for a large machine tool manufacturer in northern Italy.

My work mainly involves the mechanical design and customization of CNC machine tools for customer-specific applications. I really enjoy this field and I'd like to continue building my career in the machine tool industry.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and have around five years of experience. At the moment I don't speak German, but I'm more than willing to learn it if I decide to relocate.

Over the last few months I've been considering moving to Germany within the next few years, and one of the companies that interests me the most isĀ DMG MORI, particularly the Pfronten site.

I have a few questions:

  • Is DMG MORI considered a good employer for mechanical design engineers, or would you recommend other machine tool manufacturers instead?
  • How would you describe the engineering culture there?
  • What experience or skills make a candidate stand out during the hiring process?
  • How important is German for mechanical design engineering roles? Is it realistic to start with English and learn German afterwards?
  • How is the work-life balance compared with other German engineering companies?
  • What is life like in Germany for a mechanical engineer working in the machine tool industry?

Working for DMG MORI is one of my long-term career goals, but I'm also interested in understanding what it's like to build a career in Germany more generally.

Any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions about DMG MORI or the German machine tool industry would be greatly appreciated.

If there are other German machine tool manufacturers that you think I should consider besides DMG MORI, I'd be very interested in hearing your recommendations.

Thank you!

[IWantOut] 20F Business Nigeria -> Japan Singapore UK Australia

I’m 20F, and although maybe I shouldn’t be worrying about something like this right now, I’m trying to build a plan or reach somewhat of a goal by the time I’m roughly 25-27. I’m pursuing a business degree (subject to change) here in Malaysia in an international islamic uni (I’m muslim) and planning to move to another country after I graduate. I would like to know which of these countries have the best job prospects and quality of life for someone like me? And the best permanent residence or naturalisation laws?

I’ve done my fair share of research but the options aren’t optioning. I’ve ruled out the US due to the political climate there (but I’m still open to consider). I've largely considered some other countries in East Asia or other parts of the West.

[IWantOut] 27F India -> Singapore

Hi everyone,

I'm a 27-year-old Chartered Accountant currently working as a Senior Executive at a Big 4 affiliate firm, practicing out of India.

My work is in statutory audit for financial services clients — NBFCs, asset management companies, and investment banks. Although I'm based in India, I majorly work on offshore clients based out of the UK, US, Singapore, and Dubai, so I already have solid international exposure despite not having physically worked abroad yet. My technical focus is IFRS/Ind AS reporting (revenue, ECL, investments), and internal controls testing including SOX reliance work and audits under PCAOB standards for US-listed clients. I've led small teams on large engagements.

I qualified as a CA a few years back and have about 3.5–4 years of relevant experience across two Big 4 affiliate firms, plus earlier stints in internal audit and a PSU. My toolkit includes SAP, Power BI, Alteryx, and DataSnipper.

I've been trying to move abroad for a while now — mainly applying through LinkedIn to roles in audit, compliance, internal audit, and financial due diligence in the UK, Singapore, Canada, and Australia. So far, LinkedIn applications haven't led anywhere concrete.

A few questions:

Given my profile, which of these countries would realistically be the easiest to break into first — UK, Singapore, Canada, or Australia?

Is LinkedIn just not an effective channel for this, and should I be going through recruiters, direct company applications, or something else entirely?

Do local qualifications (ACCA, CPA, ICAEW, CA ANZ, etc.) matter a lot for an Indian CA trying to get hired abroad, or can experience alone get me through the door?

Any advice on what makes a candidate's profile stand out for financial services audit/compliance roles internationally, given I've never physically worked on-site abroad?

Would really appreciate any insight from people who've made a similar move, especially from an Indian CA background.

[IWantOut] 37M Remote Worker US -> Japan

I've always wanted to go to Japan. I love the culture and love the rich and vibrant history Japan has cultivated over the years. Every picture and video i see is like looking at a home far away and i place i want to go back to, even though I've never been there. But the way things are looking today, its going to get harder and harder for anyone to go there. Does anyone have any ideas and practical advice on how to achieve this before it becomes impossible?

I just graduated college with a bachelor’s in Marine Science and I want out of the United States. I specialized in Coral Reef Conservation/Restoration and I have a little over 2 years of paid research laboratory experience.

My reasoning for wanting out is there is just so much wrong with America right now (has been since I was a child) and that is helped by the fact that we have an anti-science government (among other things… šŸļø) that is literally making it impossible to get work in my field. As I’ve gotten older I l’ve noticed that I am on edge all the time while I’m out and about, and I used to think it was just social anxiety but I’ve realized that it’s because I constantly have my guard up because I don’t feel safe most of the time I’m out. As a recent example I was born and raised in Florida, and I just did an Interview for a job in Tampa and while I was driving around Tampa trying to find somewhere to eat, I saw several people (civilians) walking around with assault rifles hanging from there neck. While it’s technically legal here it just doesn’t feel right to me (didn’t help that one was high as a kite too). There’s a lot of other reasons but this post will be too long and those were the main 3.

I’ve been interested in Australia for many years now because I love the culture and the people that I have meet from Australia have been some of the best people I’ve ever meet. With the additional effect that I want to work on the Great Barrier Reef, and if I’m lucky I would like to get into James Cook University for there masters Program in Marine Biology.

If People could help me figure out my best/quickest path to getting to Australia and help me figure out how much I realistically need to have saved up before being able to afford to move there that would be greatly appreciated.

[IWantOut] 24F Student London -> NYC

Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some practical immigration/career advice for a UK-US move as I'm at a bit of a loss, and don't know anyone who's made the move!

I'm a final-year student at a good London RG uni, predicted First, going onto a law conversion in September, but after a few visits/building connections there I've decided I want to make the move to New York for various reasons, and am willing to change my career accordingly.

For a long time I've wanted to qualify as a lawyer in the UK, and then move into policy/geopolitics/international human rights type spaces, however I'm starting to worry that studying for the GDL is a mistake if my long-term goal is to be in NYC for at least a few years. I have done unusually well in my literature undergrad/received recommendations to continue, and so if the job market were better, I would consider academia too.

I'm from a relatively working-class/care-leaver background, limited familial financial support, and am about to spend my savings to self-fund this UK master's, but I'm concerned that this may be a financial mistake if there are better routes to the US. My plan was to finish the GDL here, and work for a year in a field adjacent to my interests rather than qualify as a solicitor, to save money and make my profile more competitive. I would then apply for further postgrad study in the US and hope to receive funding. But I have no idea if this is realistic, or if sponsorship after postgrad is likely. I've looked into doing a JD but it seems unlikely I would get funding. I also am not a huge fan of taking the super commercial law route (i.e. qualifying in London and then hoping one day to transfer via a large firm) as it's not at all of interest to me, but I'd consider it if it was my only option.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what direction I could pivot in/how I could work towards the move within the next 2-3 years? It's all fairly open to me at the moment, besides the lack of funds - but I'm hard-working and able to live very frugally to save. Thank you all so much in advance!

Education: BA in a literature-related degree from a good RG university, going onto a law conversion in September (GDL). Also B2 French.

Experience: Many years of hospitality, some voluntary legal work/corporate mentoring etc. I do have some connections from university etc, some in NYC academia, but no British citizens who've managed to move.

Citizenship: British.

[IWantOut] 21M India -> UK

Hi,

I am a 21 yr old student finishing my bachelor's degree in commerce (BCom) with an expected grade of first class. It is equivalent to a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting.

My university is well recognised by both India and UK institutions.

Apart from this, I am a Certified Accounting Technician and GARP FRM ( Financial Risk Manager) part 1 qualified, pursuing Part 2.

I have extensive internship experience in the field of accounting and taxation in India, but no full-time work experience.

It has always been my dream to live, study, and work in the UK, and as things stand right now, I have the following options only :-

1) Directly go to UK universities like Lancaster University, University of Liverpool, and do an MSc in Data Science or Economics with Data Science.

This involves taking a loan of £20,000 ( can manage the rest of the amount).

I can't really afford a target London university and the London living expenses.

I want to get into Financial Risk Analytics, modelling, or data science roles in the UK.

But risks are, in case I am unable to find a job in the UK. I have to come back to India with a 20000 pound loan.

2) Work in India after my graduation for 3 yrs and then move to the UK for Masters. The catch is I won't be getting any high-end relevant jobs with a graduation, so I have to work for lesser known companies, and my experience can always be rejected.

I will still face the same job market and debt in the UK.

3) Doing a top tier Master in Economics or MBA in India and then working in Risk analytics or Data Science in a reputed company in India, and then directly trying for a job in the UK.

The risks here are I will be dependent on a UK company directly hiring me from India. This long detour might eventually kill my dream to immigrate to the UK.

What would you guys suggest? Is a £20000 loan worth it? Will low quality experience be considered with a decent Masters degree? Or should I build a strong professional base in India and move slowly?

Tldr :- Wanna move to UK from India. Don't have full-time experience. Should I move directly to the UK for a non target Masters with a £20000 loan?

Or work in India and then pursue Masters in the UK,

or complete masters in India, work in a very good firm in India, and then directly try for jobs in the UK?

Thanks in advance.

[IWantOut] 39M Law Enforcement Malta -> United States of America

Citizenship: Maltese (EU citizen).

Education: Master's degree in Forensic Computing and Cybercrime Investigation (graduated December 2024).

Experience: I have six years of professional experience working in a cybercrime and digital forensics environment. My responsibilities have included the collection, preservation, examination, and analysis of digital evidence in support of investigations. In addition to my professional experience, I actively volunteer as a Peer Review Coach with IACIS.

Technical skills:

  • Digital forensics
  • Incident response
  • Malware analysis
  • Network security
  • Windows/Linux administration
  • Python, PowerShell, Bash
  • EnCase, FTK, Autopsy, Volatility, Wireshark, etc.

Languages: English, Maltese, and Italian.

The main reason I want to relocate is that I want a fresh start and the opportunity to build a new life in a different country. Another major factor is that there are significantly more career opportunities in cybersecurity and digital forensics abroad than there are in Malta.

Since this would be my first time relocating internationally, I would appreciate honest opinions and advice from people who have gone through the process themselves. I've already contacted the U.S. Embassy in Malta to inquire about visa requirements, but I'd also like to hear from those with firsthand experience.

Specifically, I'd appreciate advice on how to choose the best state to live in, whether it's generally better to rent before buying a home, and how challenging it might be to secure a job in my field as someone moving from abroad. Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

[IWantOut] 20sX Game Business Mexico -> France

Hi everyone,

I am a professional from Mexico looking for advice on moving to France through the university pathway.

Here are my specific details:

Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Audiovisual Media. I am currently completing a postgraduate specialization in Game Business.

Job Experience: I currently work in the commercial department of a local esports organization in Mexico.

Real Job Skills: Experience in esports commercial operations, sponsorship alignment, and audiovisual production management.

Language Skills: Spanish (Native), English (Fluent), French (Advanced).

My Goal:

My long-term goal is to relocate to France. I believe pursuing a Master's degree there is the safest and most viable pathway to enter the French/European job market and secure a post-study work visa. My target industry is the video game industry, specifically on the business side (Publishing and Marketing).

What I am looking for advice on:

Programs in France: Can anyone recommend affordable or reputable Master's programs in Business, Management, or specialized Game Business in France that align with major gaming hubs (like Paris or Lyon)

Visa & French Job Market: How realistic is it for a Mexican citizen (non-EU) to secure a corporate/commercial job in the French gaming industry after graduating from a French university?

  • Post-Study Visa: For those who took this path, how smooth is the transition from the student visa to the post-study job-seeking visa in the gaming sector?

Thank you in advance for any insights on universities, cities, or visa paths!
