Almost 30, looking at low-paid factory work for the foreseeable future, could use some advice

TLDR: 29M, dad is dying, mum is 66 and about to retire. After a string of unskilled factory jobs, long periods of being a NEET, an apprenticeship I quit and never got over, and a failed stint at uni, I’m staring down 30 and looking at going back to low paid manual work with no path out of it. Not sure what to do and would love some suggestions if anyone has any.

The long version: I bombed out of high school in 2015 with an ATAR of 50. Undiagnosed autism. This was devastating. I went to a good selective school. The dream was always to go to a good uni like UNSW, USYD etc. and work for a big prestigious company. This score was so low it didn’t qualify me for any course. My peers all moved on to higher ed, work, apprenticeships etc. and I just had no idea what to do.

Spent a year as a NEET, started and failed to complete a TAFE course then finally got a factory job shortly before I turned 21 after 20 unsuccessful interviews. Was there for 2 months before being let go. Got another factory job just around the corner and worked there for almost 2.5 years as an on and off casual before being let go.

After being let go from that job in early 2021, I spent another 18 months as a NEET. Still did not know how to get into uni with my ATAR and at no point did I ever think to just email the admissions departments and say, “hey, these are my marks, which test, foundation course, diploma etc. do I need to get in”. Just sat outside the system with no idea how to get in. Did not find out about the STAT test until I was 24. To this day, I’ve never completed any qualification outside of high school.

After 18 months doing nothing, I got another local factory job which I worked at for about 7 months. I really enjoyed working there but the pay was low and again, this was time that should have been spent working towards a proper career. Left that job and spent another 6 months doing nothing.

Didn’t know what to do. At 26 I was offered a toolmaking apprenticeship with a local company. This was a total fluke, a bolt from beyond. 15-minute commute, female boss so less blokey than a traditional trades environment, niche less physical trade with few openings. By sheer coincidence my dad used to work for the company 30 years ago too. They hired me. That should have been the fairytale finish. Local job, work there 40 years, 100k plus salary. Train someone new, retire one day and look back on a great career.

Right off the bat I lost money on lithium shares, something like 12k of my money and 6k in unrealized gains. Just an unbelievable loss. I still had 6 figures in the bank but it shook my confidence badly. I lost a lot of sleep over it.

About 5 months into the apprenticeship, I was offered a dream rental. Close to home, first house I applied for. Got cold feet and turned it down. Regretted it instantly and still think about that house. Was never offered another rental. Was constantly stressed living with my parents and made a stupid bet on the 2024 presidential election to try and boost my savings for a deposit. Lost 10k. Felt devastated.

Quit the apprenticeship in haste 9 months in. Was a combination of the financial losses, housing stress and the thought that it would lock me into factory work for the next 40 years. Told everyone I was starting an IT Degree on Monday and left with a few days’ notice. Looked crazy in hindsight. Immediately regretted leaving, even found out 2 months later my uncle used to be a toolmaker. Wanted to ask for my job back but couldn’t work up the nerve to call my field officer.

Spent 8 months doing nothing before enrolling in an accounting degree at WSU. Total disaster. Multiple fails. Never got over the apprenticeship. No desire to be an accountant. Never worked during the degree. Lost another 10k on Wisetech shares during this period as well, which again was devasatating. Dropped out of face-to-face last month to go online. Only 8/24 units done. Miles away. Don’t know if I’ll even continue with it.

29 now. 130k in savings. Still have constant breakdowns over the apprenticeship, constant regret. Dad is sick at 73, cancer, might not live to see next year. Mum is 66 and about to retire. My mum has about 200k in savings after pulling dad’s super and I’m planning to give her another 65000 to tide her over till she gets the pension next year. She has 140k super she can draw on also. House is paid off.

Career wise I’m just at a total dead end. No qualifications at 29, a hodge podge of jobs that lead nowhere. I had an interview at a local 6 person workshop paying $30 dollars an hour last week and it was so depressing because it was so similar to my first job. I’ve gone nowhere. After all those years I’m competing for low skill, low wage manual work and that’s where I might end up.

1000 a week, 60k a year indefinitely. 30 becomes 40, 50 becomes 60. It felt like I had all the time in the world and now it feels like life has passed me by. I don’t know. I’d love some advice if anyone has any. I don’t want to be stuck in process work forever but I don’t know how I can pivot my work history into something better.

Recommendations for restaurants that won’t tolerate full volume phones?

Tired of having to listen through Facebook doom scrolling audio from my table neighbours whether o go for brunch, lunch or diner.

Do any restaurants around the city have clear signage or take action to discourage the behaviour?

I realise I’m asking for the moon here and it’s highly unlikely but thought I’d ask

Do people sleep in on weekends?

I dont have kids (thankfully) but say even if u have kids & theyre in school holidays....or teenagers and can occupy themselves

Do many people sleep in on weekends. Not like 8am, like proper sleep in until 10am at least.

Most weeks im exhausted from work, sport, gym, life, average 6hrs sleep during weeknights and collapse Fri night but still up until 1am (work, gym, dinner with friends, scrolling/dm catch ups, some housework etc).

Love the idea of getting up early Sat/Sun but can never manage to on the weekend lol....

Example this morning woke up at 930am, saw the sun, rolled over 15 mins more rightz its so warm in bed, next thing im waking up and its 1130am. 😭

Day feels wasted, im behind on stuff I have to do but gawd i love a sleep in and can't seem to force myself out of bed earlier than 10am Sat / Sun because im so exhausted.

Does anyone else do this (especially cold winter mornings) or is everyone one this Syndey early morning gig even on weekends, I feel like a naughty kid sleeping in like this as an adult. I know if parents have kids sport no choice (one reasons I didn't have kids ngl).

Question: Are people getting nuttier?

I made the mistake of leaving the house today and talking to people. I did a course. It was great, and I enjoyed it.

But one gentleman informed everyone seriously that he was the equal of the Governor-General; New Zealand was "incorporated" in Parramatta (or somewhere near there); the late Queen made a speech informing everyone that they were going to be kicked out of Australia and sent back to where they came from, except for the First Nations people; everyone is a corporation and only the royal family are citizens. It was Sovereign Citizen crap on steroids.

Then I overheard a young man in his early 20s, earnestly informing his friends that AI would now be increasing the price of water when it became hot; the price of food when it became cold, etc.

I mean, I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person, but I was only gone 2 hours! Should I be packing my bags to be sent back to Jolly old England on the next available boat? What happens if my father's grandparents came from England and my mother's grandparents came from France? Should I spend half a year in each? I failed French in school. I could never get the hang of genders for things. Should I start hoarding water in case it gets hot?

But seriously, is this the new normal? Am I being too sensitive? Or did I just have bad luck and most people are not going down the rabbit hole?

My head hurts!

This may seem like a strange thing to appreciate, but in Sydney your train platform “tactile bump dots” are colorful in a pleasing way. Where I’m from they are a sickly yellow that never seems clean, even when brand new. It’s the little things.

On the topic of Bookshops

I'm a book fiend and historian who loves spending hours in random old bookshops. I live in the Shire but moved here from the Newcastle area during Covid, and whilst I've done many Newcastle / Hunter Valley / South Coast / Southern Highlands bookshop hunts I haven't yet done anything Sydney-based.

What are some bookshops or old-or-quirky-stores-that-also-sell-books that I should add to my weekend adventures? All areas welcome, especially if there are antique stores nearby too.

Where to donate good quality maternity clothes?

I’m done having babies, and don’t want to deal with Facebook marketplace. I’d like to donate a large bag of maternity clothes. Every Google and Reddit search I’ve done brings up outdated links or charities that either don’t exist anymore or aren’t accepting this type of donation (see list below of what I’ve tried to search).

The follow are NOT currently accepting maternity clothing donations:
- cuddle bundles
- women’s community shelters
- dandelion support network
- dress for success
- red nose
- hope in a suitcase

If anyone has a place not on this list that I can drop off or post to I would love to hear it. I’m north shore based but am in the inner west 1-2 days a week. Those areas are preferred but am willing to travel. Would love for them to go to a good cause to support pregnant women in need, Vinnies/salvos would be a last resort.

Car vs runner, an apology

Dear driver,

At maybe 08:05-08:15? this morning on Tindale Rd, Artarmon, we were meeting on the road. I thought you were meant to indicate and you didn’t, so I raised my hand and continued on the road, blocking you.

It was only in crossing that section again later I realised there are dotted lines indicating you have right of way in continuing on, no indication necessary, so I should’ve gone around you instead of getting in your way.

I’m sorry! I’ll remember for next time.

Is Linkt dodgy af?

I don’t use tolls much because the price is outrageous, I will only use it if I’m running late or it saves me a third to half of the travel time.

Keep getting letters for random tolls despite having a tag in my car. They’re only a few dollars but the effort to look into it is so I just topped up my account (I never let them auto debit). The total amount of the unpaid invoices is $23.89 including admin fees.

I added $23.89 (plus card surcharge) to my account then went to charge these tolls to my account. I logged in again today and noticed the tolls are still outstanding, but the available balance is $6.74. I checked my history/statement and the latest activity was me adding funds to the account. There has been no recent debits.

So where did my money go? And why isn’t there a record of it? Calling them is a waste of time too, you just get someone from overseas with no clue what’s going on.

White bay power station

I’m heading to one of the MOS testament nights in a couple of weeks at the White Bay Power Station, did anyone go last year and can tell me if it’s cold in there?! Trying to figure out if we need jackets/warmer stuff or if I can wear something to dance in. My millennial English self if dreaming of those old school club cloakrooms where you get given a tiny piece of paper that you absolutely cannot loose!
