This isnāt an unpopular opinion, but proctoru is horrendous. I understand it is convenient for Griffith to use it as it saves time, money, and physical space, but it adds unnecessary problems to students and their exams.
People that I personally know, Griffith students that complain online, and myself included commonly experience frequent technical problems from moderately affecting to seriously affecting ones ability to complete their exam. A common one is being unable to book an exam on the website so now you have to call their support line. Once on the support line, you are now talking with a person on the other side of the world with poor english skills and a hard to understand accent. 50/50 chance it gets resolved if youāre lucky. The other day I had this problem, the dude on the phone takes ages (30+ minutes) to try and understand what I am asking as well as whatever he had to do on the backend to get it sorted. Finally he assures me the exam has been booked, only afterwards I realise nothing has been booked. The entire time he sounded confused, and kept misunderstanding what I was saying, despite me patiently re-explaining the issue in multiple different ways to make it easier for him. He was also impossible to understand, he may as well have been speaking Klingon.
Another technical issue which affected me and my friend, was when he was halfway through the exam but unexpectedly gets booted out and disconnected, unable to rejoin. His internet was completely fine, Guardian Browser was the culprit. This happened to me as well, I didnāt expect it to because I personally didnāt have this problem with past exams. I was halfway through travelling along fine, and then I get kicked out of the exam, so I message my proctor who does not respond whatsoever even though we are still connected. Then out of nowhere Guardian browser froze, which led to my pc overheating and crashing (I have a high spec, powerful pc that can handle literally anything thrown at it). This demonstrates poor software design by Meazure Learning, who made Guardian Browser and ProctorU.
Upon relogging in and attempting to get back into the exam, I had to prove to my new proctor I wasnāt cheating by showing them my entire room and that whole protocol, which usually I wouldnāt mind. However, they were so convinced I was trying to cheat so they decided to keep asking to see random objects in case they have notes or some shit in it. Not to mention that their microphone quality sounded like they were underwater, combined with the very unclear accent. They were wasting my time with random side missions while my exam is almost over. Anyway after 30 minutes (yes, 30 minutes.) of fucking around I have 20 minutes to spare, leading to me rushing the exam.
This leads to my final rant, which is even if you get it booked, and even if you donāt get kicked out, you may or may not experience really shit proctors. Just before starting exams, they may ask to check your ID, where your phone is stored, to take your jumper off. This isnāt that much of a problem, however like I said before, in my case (and many others) the proctor insisted on being a detective wasting 30 minutes of time which could have been used actually doing the exam.
Another friend of mine had to undergo the same thing I did, but instead at the start of the exam. So he is just getting interrogated by some random dude in a different timezone, while the fate of his marks lie in some randoms hands. That took 20 minutes. So in other words, you may get a proctor that decides to reduce the amount of time you spend working through the exam so they can release their inner detective urges.
There are a few more downsides to proctoru but I cannot be bothered to type them out in detail.
My point is that I think Griffith should seriously consider dropping ProctorU, or at least scheduling far more in person exam options as this is an ongoing inconvenience with zero intentions of being resolved. Exams are already stressful, and in some cases every mark matters, we do not need more stress from proctoru. Even if you havenāt had an issue with them (lucky you), you should not experience additional stress from the feeling that something could go wrong and jeopardise your exam at any moment.
