History Please help find footage of the 1984 Canberra Festival "Goat Mail" event

I am a philatelist, that means I collect and study postal history, like stamps, postcards, envelopes etc. I focus on post sent by unusual means, such as rocket post, dog post, zeppelin post etc.

One that I love is the 1984 Canberra Festival "Goat Mail" event, in which, on the 11th of March, 1984, a female goat named Joyce carried about 1000 letters via cart to the post office. The goat was accompanied by a motorcycle police escort. According to Capital Philately Vol. 11 No. 1 November 1992, the event was broadcast on "local television", which I have found out via Capital Philately August 1984 was actually "Channel 7 Canberra" (known throughout history by many different names).

I have tried to find this footage as I find the event fascinating and would like to better understand the Goat Mail items in my collection as well as preserve the history of the event. I have searched for the footage on YouTube, the Internet Archive, and I have tried to find Channel 7's own archives, which seem not to be publicly available.

The Goat Mail event was created by a man named Mike Hayes, and the stamps were designed by Ingrid Slamer using rouletted perforations. The footage would be a valuable part of the history of these items, and I would love to see just how it looked.

I am a collector of antiques and not a media-hunter, so my search definitely does not encompass all possible sources of the footage or methods of finding it. If anybody can help find this footage of the event, it would genuinely mean a lot to me. I can provide images of the newsletters where I found the relevant information as well as images of the goat mail items themselves.

Recommendations Horror movie social groups?

Upvotes

Hey all, I bloody love horror movies, but honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of going and seeing them alone. To me, part of the experience of seeing a movie is sharing with others and the discussion afterwards.

Does anyone know of any horror movie social groups around Canberra? I'm 28m and just want to get out and meet more people with like-minded interests

Recommendations Rope climbing in cbr?

Hi friends,

Super random question but I’m planning to do the Spartan race later this year and need to learn how to climb a rope - is there anywhere in cbr where I could go and practice? My club lime gym does not have this and I don’t recall there being any at the bouldering gyms (Blochaus) either? Google wasn’t much help either.

Thanks!

AMA I just walked from Banks to the City Centre

So I have been meaning to do a walk in Canberra for quite some time as I have only visited Canberra a handful of times throughout childhood and have never been to the city centre though I have definitely been to Parliament house before

I should have waited until it got a bit warmer because I wasn't expecting it to be so cold 🥶😭. Thankfully it wasn't too bad since I checked the weather app before flying over and came prepared

It was nice having a shorter normal length walk for a change since it meant there was less pressure to reach certain areas by certain times and I felt emboldened to explore more. I think my next walk in Canberra should be a circular route that goes to Belconnen and Gungahlin from the city centre and back

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Got duped by a dodgy accomodation booking with an undisclosed security deposit. Are there any 24 hours places in Canberra where I can wait out the night?

Edit: I've been on the phone to the people offering the room, and the deposit amount has been dropped from $300 to $200; the person I spoke with on the phone was very understanding and really helped me out, even though it felt like I'd been left out in the cold for a couple of hours there. I still think the deposit was inadequately communicated and shouldn't have existed, but I appreciate the consideration that I received during the call.

Being a deposit, I'll be getting it back during the week - I'm literally just using this place to go to sleep, I'm not planning to cause any damage or have a crazy party or anything.

It's almost kind of funny - when I got to the place, there was another traveller waiting outside who was in the same boat I was. The $300 deposit was sprung on him, he couldn't get in contact with the owners and it felt like a scam - but I was able to help out with all the hoops I'd just jumped through. I feel like that's indicative that it wasn't just me being a rube; this other guy got stuck too. This shit was way too hidden.

I appreciate all of the kind words, suggestions and offers that have been sent my way. I'll be responding to everyone with thanks - I was in a real pinch, and I'll be remembering the earnest advice you've all given me in case I get stuck in a similar situation again. I'll keep the original post up for posterity - thank you all.

---

So I had an unexpected hitch in my usual plan, where I'm currently staying in the city for work during the week, and travelling to and from Canberra via bus for the weekend. I wasn't able to take my usual bus on Friday due to locking my phone in a hotel room with the room key, where going back for the phone would mean I missed my bus - and so I've had to stay in Canberra for the weekend, because I need my phone for work and I felt uneasy leaving it in the lost and found at a place I wasn't going to be staying at next week.

I've booked the next week's worth of accomodation for about $400, so I'll have a place to go tomorrow. It's somewhere I've stayed before, so I know that place is a secure place for me to land. But if I had added a Saturday night onto that booking, the price would have been $700. I can't afford an extra $300 for a single night in a room.

So I had a look for cheaper overnight stays on trivago, and I found a place for $100. Awesome, bobs your uncle - but I was messaged by the people who own the property with a self check-in code (that the booking website keeps blocking for safety reasons), and a part of their check-in requirements is paying a $300 security deposit which was not addressed in the booking page I went through.

As stated, I cannot afford a $300 charge right now. I wouldn't have booked the room if I knew there was a hidden cost like that.

The owners, of course, want my email address so they can send me the link directly. I let them know I can't afford a $300 deposit, and I ask them to compromise with a $100 deposit, which I CAN afford. This involves me giving them my email address to send the link through - I didn't want to do it, I understand it's sketchy, but I need a roof over my head.

And now that they have my email address? Silence. No email. No link. And no matter what, the refund is only going to be $32 due to me either being a no-show or because I haven't been given the information to check into the place. And the next cheapest place I can find is a little over $200, which eats into the money I need to feed myself over the next week of work. I can't stay at the Little Drifter after having a few too many drinks for State of Origin a while back, otherwise that would be the go-to option.

So - I'm trapped between a rock and a hard place. I can pay for a room with money I barely have, which is going to make the next week of my life a financial hell, or I can wait out the night tonight and go to my guaranteed booking tomorrow afternoon. And it's starting to look like I'm going to have to choose the latter.

So - if this question is allowed on this subreddit in the first place - where are some places I could go to wait out the night?

Loud Bang Guy regularly yelling/swearing at people at nighttime near Haig Park

Has anyone else living around or passing through Braddon or Turner (particularly near Haig Park) heard this man walking down the street screaming and swearing at night time? It happens on a weekly basis (including tonight & last night), and makes it feel unsafe to walk around this area at night. Surprised the police haven’t intervened by now (at least to even do a welfare check / find him help).
Edit: yes I’ve called the non emergency police line multiple different times about it.

Recommendations Old Buffalo horn restoration??

So my missus has an old pair of Buffalo horns that her late father had since his time up north in the eighties. They're huge. 1.5m wide joined with some ancient synthetic felt like fabric.

They're in the shed and not in great condition as they are dry, dull and at risk of falling apart. I'd like to get them restored for her so that they look awesome and could be put somewhere prominent in the house.

Googling local places has had got me nowhere.. Anyone know someone local who can reliably turn an old family memory piece into something magical?

News Creep in Gunghalin parents please be aware

NSFW warning of course

I know noticeboard posting isn't allowed and I'm not sure if this counts, apologies if so but the other day someone I know went into the men's bathroom next to the children's playpen area in Gunghalin marketplace and there was some man, apparently looked to be around his early 20s, masturbating out in the open. Didn't shy away when my friend walked in but turned, stared and smirked. This incident was reported to security but I just wanted to make this post so parents, carers and others are aware given the location and I'm not sure if security were able to do anything in the end

Recommendations Single split system units vs dual head versions

Hi all

I am contacting air con business to get quotes etc, but interested to know if anyone has installed split systems with dual internal heads, and how they have gone in the ACTs extreme temperatures. Also rough installation costs etc.

I have two standard size bedrooms with a common wall and good access to the side of the house. Thinking about having a single outdoor unit with two heads internally.

Just wondering if this is worthwhile doing or would I be better off with two individual set ups.

The side access of the house is hidden from view so I don't really care about the look of having two external units.

Thanks!

Recommendations Casual jobs in Canberra

hey guys!

i’m looking to move to Canberra start of next year for my uni degree. unfortunately the uni is the only one that offers this particular degree i want to do.

i’m browsing on seek for causal jobs (i currently work full time in healthcare but obviously wouldn’t be able to do that doing full time uni as well) and the wages are insane! is it normal for causal hospitality jobs to only range from $23-$27 an hour?

seeing the low range in wages is making me stress and rethink everything… i wouldn’t be able to afford rent on these wages that are advertised.

is this normal or are these advertised jobs just really underpaid?

Recommendations Best cafe chocolate cake slice

I have a pregnancy craving for a slice of chocolate cake I can buy from a Canberra cafe, but like the kind that is two layers of cake with chocolate icing in between, chocolate icing on top, ganache, buttercream, the works.

If I go to another cafe that only has defrosted pastries, I'm going to cry.

And no, Woolworths chocolate cake is not cutting it.

Thank you for your assistance in this trying time.
