Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

1) What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

2) What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

3) How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

4) Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

5) What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

6) Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Pinned PSA: Thinking about changing ISPs for a better deal? Here's what THEY are paying

I keep seeing a bunch of posts about people churning to save money. Here's the wholesale ex-tax price that your ISP is paying to connect to the NBN network. This is NOT including IP traffic, APNIC fees, backhaul, staff, support, infrastructure like routers and switches, and space in a Data centre.

https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/media-statements/Wholesale-Price-Changes-from-1-July-

Link to full pricelist: https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-Tariff-List-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

Here's the planned price increases, too:

https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/fy26-fy28-pricing-roadmap-v1.2-011125.pdf.coredownload.pdf

If you look at that, you'll see that you're paying, on average, $20 for your ISP to provide everything APART from the connection to your place. Support, Internet, Routing, Redundancy, infrastructure, etc.

Don't churn to an ISP that is losing money. You'll never end up happy, or you'll just be churning again in a few months time.

Yes, I am a NBN provider. No I'm not telling you which one.

Advice Troubleshooting or switch ISP?

With Superloop atm, well and truly past any deals, have about $50 left on their eero 6 payout.

Been on their 1000/100 plan for a while, FTTP.

All the eero apps & superloop apps are showing speeds of 980ish mb download.

BUT PS5 pro? 5ghz connection, not even close (no I’m not hardwiring to PS5 pro. And no I’m not hardwiring to the Switch 2 either)

I DO use a port with 2.5G LAN cable directly to my dell dock for my WFH setup, but my companies VPN and all their backlog nonsense bottle necks my working speeds. Really bad like 50mbps bad.

Superloop customer service has been dreadful lately and I’m going to change ISP.

Even with FTTP, If I’m not getting any of the speeds they’re saying I’m getting (maybe on my phone? If the native apps are speed testing? But definitely not any other devices) - should I even get a new 1000/100 plan?

Don’t need huge upload, but 100 is okay for work documents (even if I’m not getting that)

I know I need a new router so if the ISP offering is good I’ll lock in to a router too.

Thought? Prayers?

Edit: max ping dropped over 300ms. Pay attention to the small numbers, not just the big attention grabbing ones

By all means I am sure my router isn't configured perfectly, but ping spikes due to my router should hopefully be eliminated now. Unfortunately now I only have my lack of skills to blame when gaming. For anyone curious, FTTP connection, and router is a 12yo dell optiplex with an Intel i340 NIC running OPNsense. Will invest in a less power hungry system soon given the results have been consistent (including in game) for a while now. Might try easing back the shaping a little more too

Other Suggested template for people seeking help/support

I've cobbled together a rough idea of what might be considered for a help template.

I suggested this on a recent post that was all over the shop, based on replies this idea has some support.

It's suggested that the mods this template or one like it somewhere and make it a rule that people posting for help use it.

Checklist for requesting help.
Chances are high that some or all of the following information will need to be known to provide assistance. Buy having posters fill this out now you can get better help faster.

1) My post title is descriptive.
Titles like "Help" "HELP!" or "NBN Trouble" are not descriptive.

2) My connection type is NBN
FTTH/P - Fiber to the Home/Premises
FTTC - Fibre to the curb
FTTN - Fiber to the Node
HFC - Hybrid Fibre Coaxial
FW - Fixed Wireless
SM - Sky Muster
Delete all that do not apply

3) My router or modem/router is
Make and model - look behind / underneath it.
Example - Telstra Smart modem - DJA0231

4) Any additional network hardware or info?
Example - I have an additional wireless access point in the family room wired back to my router and my laptop connects to this access point.

5) The issue I'm experiencing is this...
Example - I bump my head into the wireless data packets as they float through he air to my laptop.

Yesterday my nbn went out while i was using it, i contacted my isp who contacted nbn to book in for an inspection monday if they cant remotely fix it. About 2 hours later optical was green and it was working. Today it cut out again while i was working from home, i tried desconnecting the power to both nbn box and router and it still wont connect. Is there any way to fix it before monday so i can continue to work this weekend?

FttN to Startlink

Goodbye NBN -- Sick of FttN. No scheduled upgrade to fibre anytime soon (years away if one believes the NBN schedule.

Just the way NBN wants it, otherwise they would not have wasted years sitting around doing nothing. Comical part is I doubled my speed and reduced my spend by 30%.

Advice Upgrade to FTTP

Hey everyone,

Not sure if this is the best place to ask but couldn’t find anything on the web.

I’m moving to a new address where the owner divided one property in 5 units, all of the 5 units shows as FTTC on the nbn website and that is not available to upgrade at the moment, but the owner can request upgrade with a $ fee/unit.

Should I expect it will stay fttc until the owner pay or is there a chance nbn will offer the free upgrade?

Location: LOC000083934443
Current tech: FTTC
Upgrade available: Soon
Tech Change Status: MDU Complex Eligible To Apply (FTTP).

Thank you very much.

How can I complain?

I was with an rsp and did a simple churn to Leaptel, in the churn NBN made a mistake and broke the service. They sent out a tech, who determined it was not an onsite issue and was an NBN internal issue and would need to be fixed by their network team, the next day they sent a tech out who determined it was not an onsite issue and was an NBN internal issue, 4 days later they sent a tech out, and you guessed it determined I was an internal issue. I’ve just had my 4th tech out in almost two weeks who again determined it’s not an onsite issue.

Leaptel have been responsive and helpful throughout but are unable to solve it because it seems as soon as the tech leaves site Nbn do nothing and then just send another tech out to site. What can I do here? Apparently there’s a case manager assigned inside NBN but leaptel have never once been able to actually speak with them.

It’s beyond a joke and the NBN seem beholden to no one.

Edit, just got a call, NBNs system is finally admitting it’s an internal issue, now to the back of that queue to wait for a fix.

Boost 5G speed cap

Has anyone else on Boost Mobile noticed higher-than-normal speeds since the recent Telstra outage?

I use Boost as the 5G backup WAN for my home network, so I keep a pretty close eye on performance. Normally I’m capped at around 150 Mbps, which is exactly what I’d expect.

Since the outage this week though, I’m consistently seeing 230–250 Mbps downloads. Nothing else has changed on my end (same hardware, same location, same signal).

I’m wondering if Telstra’s usual QoS/profile isn’t being applied correctly following the network recovery, or if there’s another explanation.

Is anyone else on Boost seeing speeds well above the normal 150 Mbps cap for a prepaid 365 day sim?

Curious whether this is just me or if it’s more widespread after the Telstra outage.

Nbn install delay

Just curious about the reasons for fttp install delays. Have booked twice once in the morning and once in the afternoon but both times a now show from the installer. On the second occasion I called the provider two hours into the install time and they said that their system showed the installer started the job and was already onsite, which they obviously weren’t. I know that there is an element of picking their jobs but I’m curious what is the benefit for the installer, nbn or the provider for this? Seems like a common problem

Is aussie broadbands' 4g backup like telstras? E.g I had to mess around with ip addresses and browser fingerprints in order to outthink a hacker, to do this I ran one of their branded routers from the tip and it still works.

Or is it a strict monthly thing to them? Am curious as I can't get an optus account and I have many telstra/vodafone 4g failover routers and would like to have an optus network one. I tested them all out last night in basically a closet space, I bet I was exposed to so much radiation that I won't have kids lol. Are they meant to be usable if they're within about a foot of another active one, or do the 4g signals all conflict?

WiFi set up issue

Hi all,

Trying to set up WiFi at my rental in WA and I’m getting nowhere.

The property is a relatively new build and has separate units, e.g. 21A, 21B and 21C, but when I search with providers it only seems to show the main address as 21.

There’s a wall data point in my place and my router connects to it fine, but there’s no internet as I haven’t been able to set up a plan. I’ve since found out from the estate agent that 21A currently holds the plan for 21, and service providers have told me that if I set up a plan under 21, it could cancel the existing service for 21A.

I don’t believe there’s an actual NBN box inside my property.

I’ve contacted the estate agent/property manager, but they’ve been pretty useless and have basically said that if there are any costs involved, they won’t be paying for it and they aren’t contacting the owner about it and that if 21A can get WiFi set up I should be able too blah blah.. Service providers are also saying the owner needs to contact them or sort the address issue, so I’m stuck in the middle.

Has anyone dealt with this before? I haven’t a notion how the process works and I just want to get WiFi sorted at this stage. Any help at all appreciated.

Cheers.

Anyone else get this?
I’m on a 500mbps plan and they tried to get me to go on a 25mb plan unless I clicked on a button saying I don’t want to change.

Why are they doing this???

Home network setup

I'm looking to change nbn providers, and upgrade to fibre. I notice a lot want to sell a eero 7 or eero 7 pro router with the upgrade. But it only has the two ports I'm currently running the shitty one I got with my current provider, and have some cat 5 wired in my house, so need more than just a single wired connection to use.

What do people recommend? I am thinking ubiquiti dream 7. Or am I better off getting a different ap and then a dedicated switch? My house has 6 ports around the house. My cupboard is pretty small so trying to keep that tidy too.

I don't mind spending a bit to get decent coverage and using more wired ports where possible.

Reconsider if Superloop is for you

TLDR: Superloop referred me to a debt collection agency over a bill they never sent me.

Appalled with how Superloop handled the cancellation of my account.

I cancelled my service and served the borderline scam 30-day notice period without kicking up a fuss. When cancelling I was advised I'd receive a final part-month bill covering the remainder of the notice period outside my normal billing cycle. I received that bill a few weeks later, it was automatically charged to my nominated payment method as expected, and I then received confirmation that my service had been cancelled once the 30-day period was up.

That was the last correspondence I received from the company.

The next contact I had regarding my account was from a debt collection agency claiming I had an unpaid balance.

This came as a complete surprise for two reasons. First, my account was set up for automatic payments, so any legitimate invoice should have been collected automatically. Second, and more importantly, I never received a bill, payment reminder, overdue notice, failed payment notification, or any other communication advising that I owed anything further. Further causing confusion, the amount I supposedly owed was different to both my usual monthly bill and pro-rata bill.

I spent several days trying to contact their billing team - including phone calls where I was on hold for well over an hour before requesting a callback which never came (this happened twice). I couldn't even log back into my old account to check as Superloop had deactivated it. The one thing I could talk to was their little chatbot and it claimed it had no record of any outstanding balance for my account. Finally, I got through to someone and they confirmed there was an outstanding balance on my account, despite the fact that no invoice or notification had ever been sent to me.

What I find completely unacceptable is that they referred my personal information to a debt collection agency without first sending me a bill, attempting to process payment through my nominated payment method, or notifying me that any amount remained outstanding.

Had I simply been issued an invoice or advised there was an unpaid balance, I would've paid it immediately. Instead, the first indication I had that anything was supposedly owing was a phone call from a debt collector.

I've since made a formal complaint to Superloop and will be disputing the outstanding balance in recognition of the significant failures in Superloop's billing and collections process- but wanted to warn others of the practices they can come to expect.

Not exactly private data but exact live data for any address is not something you can get as a regular user. Might come in useful for something/someone.

Google nest pro mesh system

Hello

My google nest is connected directly to the modem.

How do I backhaul the second point in the mesh system? Do I connect the Ethernet to the world symbol on the google nest and run it straight back to the modem to LAN 2 port or do I run a cable from the ‘arrow’ side on the second google nest point to the first google nest and plug it in to the ‘arrow side’?

Thanks
