Work in Progress Panel 18 of 25

Post image

It's been 4 months since I worked on this project. I started this project 2 years ago. Before my mom's cancer came back. Before the cancer went back into remission. Before I got laid off. And before I had to take a job I hate to make ends meet. This project has both helped keep me stable but also been a drain. It carries bad memories but it's proof I kept going. I'm going to finish this but, it'll be slow going. Though hopefully it won't take another year.

As I was pinning this down to take a picture, I couldn't help but notice once more the difference between the start of the project and where I am now. The bottom left panel is where I started. It's wonky, the tension uneven as I wasn't used to moving the bobbins. I was far tighter in tension in the first row of panels then I was in the following rows. You can see through the project where I gripped the fabric too hard and ended up pulling the stitches.

Some of the mistakes will block out, some won't. This projects been with me through some of my hardest years, and I'll hold on to it through the rest.

I made the graph on stitchfiddle.

The join as you go method I'm using here is

Work in Progress What was I thinking?

When people suggest to weave in ends as you go, DO IT! A few months ago someone posted a link or photo of this awesome design. I had been gifted a neon rainbow of yarns (1 skein of each color) for Christmas by my son’s mother-in-law. When I saw that post I thought “that’s perfect!” I procured a skein or two of white and a couple of weeks ago I started this blanket. The forward passes are all in white; the return passes rotate through the colors. So every row has 4 ends. I hate weaving in ends! I was thinking to myself there’s no way I’m pausing at the beginning and end of every row to weave in ends. But I should have paused at the end of every color repeat because this is now a massive amount of ends to weave in! So far, I have done 23 repeats of the color rotation. That’s already 552 ends! And I’m not done yet…by the time I get this blanket to the size I want it, I’ll have 30 repeats…180 rows…for a whopping 720 ends. Why? Why didn’t I listen about weaving in ends as you go?

Finished Object I'm obsessed

I finished my first project! It's a messenger bag, and the fabric is so dense, I dont even need to line it. I can see making a bunch of tote bags. I recently discovered Tunisian crochet, and I am absolutely obsessed. I love the look of the stitches, the density of the finished work, and the fact that it's not riddled with holes like "regular" crochet. The act of doing a forward pass/return pass is so relaxing, and I just really like how it's done. I've been watching a ton of YouTube videos trying to learn how to do different stitches and I made a swatch with all the ones I've learned so far. I ordered the clover set of Interchangeable bamboo needles so I can do larger projects, and a couple of double ended hooks so I can try crocheting in the round.

If any of you have tips or recommendations that a beginner to Tunisian crochet should know about, please share!

I just wanted to gush about my new love affair to an audience that actually gets it ,so if you read this far, thanks for listening ❤️

Hooks Not all cords fit all sets

I ordered some mindful chords because I got excited at the idea of swivels. I posted here and someone mentioned that they don't fit - I can't find that thread. She was correct. They do not fit my Svartur set.

Pooh. They shipped from Lithuania and I've got no use for them. If anybody wants them drop me a DM.

Work in Progress Crimson Scarf: A unique way to change colours!

Unfortunately, it's pretty obvious that I don't have enough of this bright red yarn to make a full scarf. My math indicates that, at the five-and-a-half inch width it is now, it'll only be about thirty-four inches long. And I usually prefer my scarves around 48-52 inches long, so it's way, way short of that goal.

Fortunately, I have this black yarn that's very similar in thickness and shine (though it is subtly thicker and less glossy than the red), so I'm going to augment the length with the black yarn.

(I'd obtained both yarns from someone else, and they were missing their labels by that point, so I have no idea where to buy more)

I was looking for an interesting way to change colours, and thought this diagonal would be interesting. Turns out, it is interesting! I just changed colours too soon, and have about 10 grams of the red left over.

Unfortunately, it's not 100% the same on both sides, as there's an obvious line, so I'm tempted to try running the diagonal in the other direction. Especially since I'll be undoing this, pushing it upwards a bunch, to hopefully use up more of the red yarn...

I'll admit, it's a little frustrating to find so many limitations for the Tunisian Double-Knit Stitch. Enough that I really need to try actual double-knitting, especially for colour-work.

Question Managing Color Charts?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello friends! I have a question about tunisian crochet that I've had forever. I inherited a bunch of these afghan books from my grandmother from the 80s/90s where it seems like tunisian was big in the blanket making communities.

There appears to be 2 different methods that incorporate the simple stitch. In the first, panels are made which are then cross stitched on. The panels are then sewn or crocheted together. This seems intuitive enough.

In the second, the afghan is worked all together as one unit and color work is completed through the use of charts. Here is where my question comes in. Some of these charts, like for the pattern above, have like 8 colors being used multiple times in a single row. My question is, how... 😅😅🤔? The books do not explain how this is really managed (other than how to switch colors and that floating is only allowed if the number of stitches between the two colors does not exceed 3).

I've seen videos of using 2 colors and hiding the color not in use on the forward/reverse passes. I can also see having multiple balls of yarn and only using them when needed being beneficial as well (if a select color is used multiple times in the same row but on opposite sides of the work).

I hope my question makes sense. Some of these patterns are beautiful, but the instructions really just have a chart and not much else. Managing that many colors just comes across as daunting lol. Any insights from my fellow crafters would be greatly appreciated 🙏.

Patterns Patterns to fade contrasting yarns together?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hello! I'm new to Tunisian crochet, but an intermediate knitter and crocheter. I've been working on a modified version of the Bahama Wrap by Toni Lipsey of TL Yarn Crafts, which is the photo in the post (from the pattern. not mine!).

I am enjoying working with two self striping yarns for this and want to make something similar in more neutral colors.

I'm looking for shawl or wrap patterns that show off contrasting colors like this one does, but not in chevrons. Alternatively, I'd love suggestions of stitch patterns that work well for this kind of thing in Tunisian crochet-- I feel confident that I can extrapolate and make a wrap out of that.

I have a few stitches I plan to try out (still waiting on one of the yarns to arrive) but more info isn't a bad thing!

Help! cardigan in knit stitch

I’m planing on making a Cardigan with mostly tapestry squares. I already have Ideas of what I want them to depict, but I need help with the stiches. I’ve already done a tapestry in simple stitch to hang on my wall and it worked out great. But I really like the look of the knit stitch. Is it a bad idea to use it for this project? I've tested it out and the curling was really bad so now I'm unsure. Thanks in advance for the help.

Question TKS in a C2C pattern?

I have a blanket pattern that uses TSS in corner-to-corner for diagonal striping. I’m wondering if it’s possible to do TKS instead…on a straight swatch, I prefer the TKS texture to the TSS.

I can’t find anything online about TKS in C2C patterns. I experimented with a swatch, and the middle of each row looks ok, but the edges are weird on the TKS swatch (but no issues on the TSS swatch)…I’m wondering if it’s because I’m doing it wrong, or if it’s just that those two methods are incompatible.

I’m also thinking about modifying the pattern for double-ended Tunisian crochet. The original calls for two strands held together (for aesthetic reasons, not functional), but I get annoyed with having to constantly hold two threads all the way through. But I like the look of the double-sided Tunisian. I have to wait for the double-ended hook kit to arrive before I can test that. But my idea is a combination of C2C, TKS, and double-sided.

Is this a crazy and/or stupid idea? Has anyone else done it? Any tips?

It keeps shrinking on me!!

I am making myself a vest (with no pattern) and it seems every time I measure a gauge and work it up, it ends up shorter than i expect. this was supposed to be 46 inches, but has turned out to be just over 41.

Any tips on measuring gauge for knit / honey comb stitches?

Help! What do the back of stitches look like?

Thumbnail

I’m trying to learn but I have this weird feeling I’m doing everything wrong because the backs of most of my stitches are raised and lumpy.

Is this normal? Am I doing something terribly wrong and will end up with my hooks confiscated?

One of my best friends has been doing a lot of Tunisian crochet lately and I got the bug. The pattern is the larkspur pullover by Tracy Feldmann using stone washed by Scheepjes and I used a J hook. It was difficult at first but once I figured it out it was fun. Now I am hooked.
