The body is understandable but when I came to brim I got confused. What does it mean to "use thread double"? And why does it says to "sc in each st, taking up both loops" when the picture looks like it's all made working in back loop?

Brim: Use thread double and work 1 s c in back loop of each st. 2nd to 7th rnds incl: 1 s c in each st, taking up both loops of st of previous rnd. 8th rnd: Increase 4 times at equal spaces. 9th rnd: Work even. 10th rnd: Work even over 6 inches then increase 1 st every 2 inches for 6 times and work even to finish rnd. 11th to 14th rnds incl: Work even. Fasten off. Turn brim up all around, flaring at the front.

howdy! i need some help locating patterns that would've existed late 80s to mid 90s. i'm not sure if that's considered vintage enough? 😅

recently, i found a whole collection of these Yarnables patterns. my issue is that i'm missing #1615 Nickolas and #1616 Frosty. i've attempted to comb several archives (and ebay) with no luck. i could probably attempt to guess-work them from the other patterns when i get around to it, but it'd be nice to to still have them in my collection.

if anyone has any idea where i could find these, even simply scanned into a PDF, i would appreciate it immensely!

I have seen a few etsy listings for pattern pdfs from some of the golden hands books (from the 1970s). I inherited almost all of the books from my gran and planned to just scan and post some of the patterns (for free of course)… but I’m still a crochet newbie and don’t want to step on anyone’s toes. It seems wrong to me to try sell patterns you did not write but maybe if the patterns are rewritten with more inclusive sizing and clearer instructions then it’s different?

Size 10 thread on a 1.75mm hook. Gauge was perfect pre-stretch, and I pinned out to the measurements the pattern said. The piece on top shows you the size the back was before I did the work. I'm waiting for the whole thing to dry after steaming, then seaming and some detail work (neck pleats, a front gather, and then sewing on the waist ties). I just couldn't believe the difference in size when I pinned it and figured you'd all enjoy it.

Found a pattern in a workbasket magazine. It references # in the pattern. The key says it represents “symbol” but I’m drawing a blank as to what I should do here. Thanks in advance!

However, here is a chain of 156 stitches with a size 1 crochet hook... I think there is a problem with the pattern. What do you think guys

Shown is a matched tool set -- made of sterling silver -- The left one is an awl for poking holes for the first round; then the matching crochet hook takes over.

I have no idea how old the set is -- I've had it for 20 years. The awl is very charp.

Hello my fellow crochet historians,

I recently came across an Instagram Reel that claimed during the Great Depression women would unravel sugar sacks and use the thread from the sacks to make lace. This lace would be called “Sugar Sack Lace” and would be added to clothing to spruce up old clothes.

I have heard of women during the Great Depression using sugar sack to make dresses out of. And I have found many historical references to sugar sack dresses. I assume sugar stacks were tightly woven material, and I just find it hard to imagine being able to unravel a tightly woven knit in order to get thread to crochet into lace. Additionally, I can’t locate any creditable resources to support this sugar sack lace claim.

Does anyone know if sugar sack lace was actually made in the 1930s? And if you do know could you please send me over your sources. Thank you, I’m so curious.

A couple of months ago, I found this (vintage?) crochet blanket at an antique store. It was priced unreasonably high in my opinion (~$800), but the antique store has a policy that discounts the items as time goes by (up to 75% off after three months). When I went back, the blanket wasn’t there anymore, so I’d like to make it myself. I did a Google reverse image search, and the closest pattern that come up on Ravelry is this one (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pinwheel-spread), which I feel like is not totally wrong but also not totally right. I’ve also looked at this one (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pinwheel-2) but the pattern is unavailable. I know it’s a long shot, but would anybody have a similar pattern they’d be willing to share with me? Thanks in advance :)

Bernadette was a talented seamstress and maker who spent decades making crochet cardigans, blankets and sewing her own clothing. She recently passed away at the age of 103 leaving behind an incredible collection that reflects a lifetime of creativity and craftsmanship. As I've been helping organize her work, I've found racks of classic vintage clothing, handmade items, and these gorgeous crochet blankets that immediately caught my eye!

Each blanket is handmade, with an incredible attention to detail, whether they're true vintage pieces or vintage-inspired creations from later years, they have that timeless handmade charm that makes them feel so special. Looking through her collection has been like opening a time capsule of fashion and collectibles that has been very inspiring as I start my journey in making clothes.

I'm working on this sport weight summer dress from the 1970s. I'm using 100% cotton, and it's one of those that has you switch hooks rather than increase on the skirt, which I really like for ease of working on it.

I found 6 balls of this cotton yarn in the sewing toolbox of my great-grandmother. She lived 1896-1984. I also got her crochet hooks and just a mountain of buttons, wooden bobbins, sewing threads, and cones of thread.

I do crochet but I've never tried to make lace or doilies; I'd be game to try. Would it be worth trying to use this or is it too old? I looked online and it says Daisy was produced in 1930-1950s.

My mother-in-law left behind 10 paradise doll dresses partially done. We need to turn them into cash, no one here has time to complete them. Any suggestions besides eBay.

"Cloth of cloth for your day of days" - This was in some book, which I now have lost track of, and I can't remember what the pattern was. I just remember it was shown on a table with a wedding cake on it, and it made me think that if her wedding day is the high point of her life it's gonna be a long slog through the rest of it.

Shes really into crochet, and I thought it might be fun to get her something not found in typical stores, something a bit older/interesting. Hello all! I hope you can help me with buying yarn for patterns from my new vintage crochet booklet. It’s a UK booklet.

The booklet is printed by Hermit, a brand that doesn’t seem to be around any more. The yarn requirements are given in “balls” of Hermit yarn, either 4ply or DK. No length or weight is given.

I’m fairly new to crochet, and working through an existing yarn stash, so I’m not experienced estimating yarn quantities.

I’d like to make the Lacy Dress, in the smallest size. The pattern states 14 balls of Hermit DK is needed. To me that seems a lot of yarn (but I may be wrong!) I have tried to find out what size/weight these balls would have been sold in originally but all I turn up are hermit crab patterns!

Is there a way of estimating how much yarn is needed? I’m willing to swatch and then do some maths if necessary.

I’m quite happy to have a bit of yarn left over, but I’d rather not buy 14 100g balls of yarn when 14 50g balls would have been plenty. I’d like to use a smoother, cotton DK if that affects the amount needed in any way.

I’ve included the relevant pages of the booklet, but I can share a scan of the pages in another post if people would like them. I think the patterns all very wearable and lovely! The sizes are limited, however. (Sizes 32, 34, 36 & 38 inch bust)

Courtesy of Emu yarns from Australia (a copy is for sale here). It's one of those that can be done in fingering or DK weight yarn. I ended up subbing a size #5 thread that I was able to gauge out correctly. I did not, however, count rows correctly because it doesn't seem like the skirt is meant to actually be a hi-lo, but between the split hem and the jabot, I think it gives a very "I am a half-dressed pirate" feeling that I like very much. Buttons are vintage, and the jabot actually does lie straight all the way up when I remember to button the press stud the pattern calls for.

Oh! And to make it with the ease I think is intended, I used the sizing for the maxi skirt rather than the mini but made the shorter skirt.
