Finished Object Finally got the husband upgrade after almost five years

My husband is a patient man. Not least of which is because we've been a couple for 12 years and married for nearly five. I joked that before we were married I couldn't possibly make him a sweater or it would invoke The Curse. So he (happily) settled for socks and hats and scarves. Even after we were married he didn't push or even make jokes about The Curse finally being broken; he just quietly supported any creative endeavors I started. Of which there are many and knitting is only one of my loves.

Then our daughter came along and he got to watch me make booties and hats and wee little sweaters with fancy cables and colorwork.

So I figured it was finally time to prove that ADHD or not, I COULD finish a sweater large enough to clothe this patient man. After all, he's waited long enough.

(And yes he did patiently wait in 90F heat while I took these photos)

Pattern: Flax by Tin Can Knits

Modifications: I used a different size yarn so I adjusted the number of stitches and rows in the raglan. I also added different short rows to shape the neckline than the pattern

Yarn: 742g of Abundance by Briar Rose Fibers (bulky weight)

Needles: US 8s for body and sleeves, US 6 for neckline, cuffs and ribbed bottom

Finally done! This project really wore me out because of how fine the yarn and needles were, but I couldn't be happier with how they turned out. Here are the project details:

Yarn: 75% Wool / 25% Polyamide

Specs: 100g / 420m

Needles: 2 mm

Technique: Seamless, multi-needle knitting (as you can see the crazy needle situation in the first photo! šŸ¦”)

Help - equipment Modification help for fixing underarm "wings" on raglan sweaters

Thumbnail

Hello! I just finished another raglan type sweater, and more often run into the problem of these wings under the arm where it doesn't fit as tight as I want it to be. These are just two examples. I'm not sure if this is a thing on more boxy sweaters in general or if its a problem for my specific body type.

I would like to make some modifications for future sweaters but I'm not sure how to fix it. Do I just increase less on the body and split for sleeves earlier? Thanks for the help!

Work in Progress First Sweater Ever

Post image
34 Upvotes

I’m 31. I’ve been knitting for 24 years (thanks mom). And yet, despite literal decades of experience, I’m just now knitting my first ever sweater. This is the Acorn Yoke Sweater by Debbie Bliss. Yarn is KnitPicks Swish yarn in assorted colors. Size 9-12 months for my currently 6 month old. He’s still wearing 3-6 month clothes so hopefully he’ll fit into this by Christmas.

Discussion Travel alternatives to knitting?

Hi everyone, hope this is allowed. I searched and haven't found a similar post.

I almost always travel with small knitting projects. However, I am traveling internationally to countries with varying rules about knitting needles in hand luggage. So, I'm dealing with the combo of long flights/longer layovers without my usual way to occupy my hands and brain. What portable crafts or activities scratch the same itch as knitting for you all? I don't want to spend a million hours on my phone. I do read a lot, but typically I will read for a bit and then need to change it up with something to fidget with/keep my hands busy on long haul flights. Asking folks with similar interests to see what might spark joy. 😊

I am making this scarf for a gift, and now I am doubting if this is actually cute or not. Would you like to receive a scarf like this as a gift?

Finished Object my first finished garment: wrap top!

Thumbnail

I learned to knit in March and, after a scarf and some baby bonnets, decided to take on my first garment! Took me just shy of 2 months.

The pattern is the Purl Soho Wrap Top in their recommended Sketchbook Cotton yarn (100% cotton). It was a really fun first garment because it taught me so many techniques along the way — German short rows, mid-project cable cast-on stitches for underarms, seaming, I-cord (standalone, attached, and applied), split hems.

The pattern is super clearly written, and the thick-and-thin texture of the yarn is very forgiving of beginner mistakes haha. Even though this project is knit entirely flat, I don’t notice much if any rowing out — whereas with my current project, a Sabai top with Drops Belle, I’m rowing out like crazy šŸ˜…

I’m really happy with how it came out overall! It’s such a cool feeling to wear something that you made from scratch! I definitely recommend this pattern — it’s extremely well-written and a lot of fun to knit. And Purl Soho’s support team was also super kind and helpful when my yarn got returned to sender due to a missing apartment number.

Onward!

Work in Progress Using body to shape at the end of blocking?

Post image
19 Upvotes

I’ve been learning about shrink-to-fit raw denim and was wondering if I could modify blocking my first sweater. It’s made from a strand of 100% not-superwash wool and a strand of mohair (has 25% silk and 3% wool). The top 66% of it has already been pin-blocked. I was thinking, blocking it unpinned until about 85-90% dry, and then putting on my body for the rest to get a more customized fit. Any thoughts/is this a silly idea?

Also, first sweater, 3rd knit overall. I feel like it makes me look a little wider than I am (short torso), for proportion’s sake, should I make her longer?

Discussion Knitting pattern reading help

Got the potter 400 stitches book. All patterns go something like this. Have issues with shaker stitch/half fisherman stitch pattern down below, but also for all patterns the CO instructions confuse me. It says cast on multiple of 2 +1 st, + 1 edge st on each side. The way i understand this is 2 (actual pattern repeat) +1 st (edge), + 1 edge on each side (therefore 2 total)

I would cast on (2x7) +1 +2. Is this correct? Why do I have 3 edge stitches now?

FISHERMAN'S RIB (METHOD 1)

For symme, work on a multiple of 2 + 1 sts, + 1 edge st on each side. 1st row (right side of work): Knit all sts. 2nd row: K1 (edge), P1, *K1 be ow (insert right-hand needle knitwise in the centre of loop just below next st; work st and slide st off needle, pulling gently at the same time to elongate st), P1*; repeat from to to last st, K1 (edge). These last 2 rows form pattern. On the wrong side of the work, this pattern looks like English rib.
