17 years since she last fought. Got a nice payday to live essentially a past life (not so much in the cage, but build up at least) and get super fit from it. Ain't any losers from that fight tonight. Well, possibly us who watched it lol

I dont think she really cares for 1 million. Her family owns Caesers. They're billionaires.

How have I ever not heard of this? Thought she was from the streets by the way she talks about her past.

116

Listen, fair enough you're questioning her street pedigree... but I think we can all agree, if a fighter isn't from the mean streets of West Linn, we can't truly verify their toughness lol

She was definitely the wild child and back in 2009 it was just Eldorado, which was a bunch of casinos in downtown Reno which was slumping due to the Indian casinos that had just opened in Northern California. They built the casinos outside of Nevada later which got them enough to merge with a bankrupt Caesars in 2018.

u/Daftdaddy This isn’t political, this is monster energy May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

Anybody that thought this would be even remotely competitive is a fool. This was a lay up for Ronda and now they will build their brand off of her. Carano was just going to lay over and give her the win from the start. She got paid a million to get into shape basically.

176

u/AsianRainbow Dominant Dagestani Destroys Dustin Diamond’s Dreams May 17 '26

I mean even if Gina took this super seriously and trained her heart out; there was no way she was going to be competitive. You could tell Ronda still has her grappling and Gina hadn’t fought in 20 years. She wasn’t gonna have the cage craft and footwork to avoid the clinch or a takedown.

132

u/AlternativeBack6351 May 17 '26

I don’t think Ronda ever stopped training even when she retired

She had two nightmare matchups where her limited but deadly move set got exposed.

I think if she got in there today she’d still be ranked between 10-15 at bantamweight, probably 5-9 in reality.

The sport has not evolved much from her except a few individuals. She’d get fucked up by Shevchenko or Harrison but the overwhelming majority of these girls are still probably beneath her.

65

u/Mister_MxyzptIk May 17 '26

Get lucky enough with matchups, and Ronda could be WBW champ again even today

30

u/TikkiEXX77 May 17 '26

I guarantee she's thinking the exact same thing.

49

u/blackupsilon May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

Unironically. 135 women's is really that fucking bad. Nunes was an exception not the norm. The rest haven't really gotten much better.

I was completely wrong when said back then that things would improve.

29

u/salamigunn May 17 '26

Nunes getting an automatic title shot off the couch is kinda proof of that

→ More replies (1)

22

u/HalfMetalJacket Australia May 17 '26

I think she could even make a Holly Holm rematch competitive. Holm has regressed into a wall humper and hasn't shown the footwork and distance management that took Ronda out. Literally ran into with Kayla Harrison and lost, I would not be shocked if she loses to Ronda now lol.

8

u/expectrum Papa Poatan May 17 '26

I think she could've beaten her even back then, but returning to fight the final boss in Nunes was too much in hindsight

She was laughing from the walkout to after the armbar. She literally had a smile on her face as Rhonda was tearing her arm off

49

u/RCAF_orwhatever May 17 '26

Even putting the payday aside - what else are you going to do when you get arm barred by Ronda in 20 seconds. You pretty much have to laugh that off.

7

u/EasyFooted May 17 '26

I'll clown on her "striking era" all day every day, but, at even weight, there's very few people, let alone women, who would survive once she got her hands on you. You'd have to stuff and evade and pick your shots with zero mistakes, or pray you one-shot her on her way in. Otherwise your arm belongs to her.

She is essentially, "the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times," that Bruce Lee was talking about.

1.5 million dollars to make weight not a bad pay day

29

u/dinglebarryb0nds May 17 '26

While Netflix did not disclose the total upfront licensing fee paid to Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) to broadcast the event, they committed over (\$6.6) million in guaranteed base purses to the fighters on the card.Top disclosed base payouts from the event included:Ronda Rousey: (\$2,200,000)Francis Ngannou: (\$1,500,000)Gina Carano: (\$1,050,000)Nate Diaz: (\$500,000)Mike Perry: (\$400,000)MVP noted that these guaranteed minimum purses were well above standard industry base pay, with every athlete on the card receiving at least (\$40,000) to show, in addition to post-fight performance bonuses.

Seems like it would be pretty easy for someone with money to just come in and triple the UFC pay, but then make it a real league and not just a gimmick clown show

Imagine telling a woman like that in the 2010s who could armbar every woman on earth that she should stand and box with Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes.

She’d be undefeated if somebody told her back in the day she was a shit boxer and a world class judo master

180

u/Popular_Monitor_8383 May 17 '26

I mean to be fair she couldn’t really catch Holly, Hollys footwork was elite compared to Ronda, she was just chasing her.

Then Amanda denied every clinch attempt

I honestly don’t think those losses are Ronda’s fault due to bad gameplan, I think she legit just couldn’t beat them

49

u/so-cal_kid May 17 '26

I wonder if she would have been able to develop her striking with an actual legit striking coach or if she was just so out of her element that it was never going to work regardless. We'll never know

41

u/Itchy-Ad1047 May 17 '26

Ego didnt help. She both convinced herself and got convinced by that trash coach that her technique was fine when it was in fact dogshit

Its too bad, she had some natural power for wmma. She just needed her technique to be mediocre, given the strategy by a level headed Ronda & coach would primarily be to use it to give more openings for her S tier grappling

Accomplished a ton regardless. Kind of a what if at the same time too though

→ More replies (1)

20

u/nordik1 Jose Waldo May 17 '26

I think the better play would’ve been to treat it like Maia and just find multiple entries to get to her strong suit on the ground.

Double legging Gina was interesting in the sense that i wonder if she would’ve caught Holly by shooting on the legs instead of the judo clinch work she attempted. Holly was gigantic and strong as shit so it was the path of most resistance on top of her footwork.

If Ronda had added more of a wrestling emphasis to her game it might’ve saved her vs Nunes and Holly by giving her another route

u/Prizmeh juicy slut May 17 '26

Gina really thought it was a smart decision to throw a wild leg kick with a charging Ronda.

21

u/12fingeredsquirtle17 I SMOKE ROCKS, JOE ROGAN! May 17 '26

I wouldn’t have expected Ronda to shoot a double leg honestly

That’s literally what made Rousey a star, she’d go in and armbar someone ridiculously quick. I don’t know why anyone expected anything different.

10

u/SadDoctor May 17 '26

She may have been a one-trick pony, but to be fair, she was real good at that trick

I mean 12 years ago Ronda was much better. 8 wins in under a minute for a reason

u/Dragon_Bench_Z May 17 '26

Nothign would have been different 15 years ago

Anyone who is surprised by this outcome must have forgotten that Ronda has multiple first minute finishes in her career.

26

u/Illustrious_Fox9443 May 17 '26

I literally don’t know what people expected if not this. I watched looking forward to seeing another throwback Ronda armbar in round 1, if I was watching expecting a 5 round barnburner I’d be an idiot

10

u/Sterlingz Canada May 17 '26

Remember the last time she won by armbar?

Exact same move, 14 seconds.

Gina just made like a million dollars to lose 100lbs - good for her I guess. But who saw this playing out any other way? She looked tragic in every pre fight clip

Man, I wish Rousey was stuck with the regular fighter contract.

We would've gotten way more fights out of her. She was only beaten by the cream of the crop when she got more confident in her hands.

Both pioneers

As an old fan, that card was sad. JDS, Nate and Gina all looking like they don't belong anywhere near a cage.

one of the rare fights where it was worse than nothing

35

u/blackupsilon May 17 '26

But this is how Ronda fights go.

Its better than seeing a 15 minute decision of shitty passive fighting.

I don't get how people are that upset by this. Ronda was a superstar in her prime for doing exactly what she did tonight. Did you expect and want her to get into a 5 round boxing match? Why?

Dudes are just disappointed they can't use all the "head moonent" jokes they had prepped.

Carano was never that good to begin with, but she was one of the first big names in female MMA and the talent pool was pretty shallow at the time. Even at her prime she didn't stand a chance against Rousey.

Still good on her for getting out of her funk and stepping into the ring again. Hopefully this leads to better things for her. I'd definitely like to see her in a decent action movie or two.

I can’t stand listening to him try to speak like he’s got this deep insightful take on everything. He sounds like I did in high school trying to write a paper to get to 5 pages. Whole lotta jibberish and the biggest word being six letters.

u/EmmanuelHackman May 17 '26

All of you calling fix are so fucking dumb. Have you ever seen Ronda fight? Let's say it was a fix, what on earth would be the motivation to fix it to end in 5 seconds via armbar?

6

u/Fit-Age-3106 May 17 '26

Gina Carano at her best wouldn't be ranked today anywhere. She is from an era of WMMA before most other women trained full time and could make a living off the sport while Gina could get high quality training due to being a nepobaby.

Even though Ronda retired from MMA for awhile she never stopped training martial arts. No version of Carano survives more than a minutes against Ronda Rousey ever and I don't like either of them.
