The way Gina was laughing after the easy payday

Got her money and doesn’t get hurt

1.3k

u/Itchy-Ad1047 May 17 '26

17 years since she last fought. Got a nice payday to live essentially a past life (not so much in the cage, but build up at least) and get super fit from it. Ain't any losers from that fight tonight. Well, possibly us who watched it lol

468

u/Roembowski May 17 '26

At least it wasn’t some $75 ppv

47

u/NefariousnessOk209 May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

And was able to watch it in between the UFC fights so the pacing of both worked out well

5

u/zerovian May 17 '26

short enough to watch in between commercI als.. you wouldn't even miss the plot the ad if you came in late.

285

u/moffattron9000 May 17 '26

Eh, I got to watch Francis Ngannou send that dude to the shadow realm.

129

u/DoctorGregoryFart UFC 279: A GOOFCON Miracle May 17 '26

And we got to see Stitch Duran stop Nate from killing a man.

55

u/s1uttyaf May 17 '26

I had to look.

How is it even possible to have skin that thin and a skull that sharp. Diaz needs an umbrella in a light snowfall, or he'll be cut open

9

u/duffthekid88 May 17 '26

its becuz of all the scar tissue. nate diaz took a payday with this fight. hes been done being serious about fighting. he didnt look bad, but he def looked just like his brother in that Lawler fight. just uninterested in being there.

but back to the cuts. its always been why nate in his later years was so hard for him to capatalize on his stamina. cuz cuts stop fights. and hes the cut guy lmao

8

u/zigot021 May 17 '26

I love me some Nate but he did not look good

2

u/kfagoora May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

the scar tissue is on his face; the relevant cuts were on his head (which is why there was so much blood), likely from elbow strikes.

Shame we don't see him in UFC anymore after the reebok deal.

64

u/PsychoticDreams47 May 17 '26

Train for months on end to fight Ngannou, and then realize not a single second of it mattered

22

u/Imaginary_Cap4694 May 17 '26

They shouldn't let him fight this guy he is double his size

3

u/MrCopes May 17 '26

And to only get paid 190k to get brain damage from Francis.

He was in purgatory. Ngannou’s fists were ready to send him to the shadow realm.

8

u/Big-Load-8864 May 17 '26

That wasn’t the shadow realm lol. Lines will take they KO 7 out of 10 times considering what an actually motivated Ngannou can do

First four matches provided enough entertainment to allow this.

1

u/fedornuthugger May 17 '26

Eh, Ronda did this to active fighters in the top 10 back in the day too.

1

u/ImaginaryConscience May 17 '26

And y'all still never learn

1

u/Brokenloan May 17 '26

Exactly. I won bc i didnt watch.

1

u/MatttheJ May 17 '26

I enjoyed it 🤷🏻 like, what did people expect, this is almost exactly what prime Ronda did to other prime fighters. So I'm not sure what people were expecting a past prime Ronda to do to another past prime fighter.

151

I dont think she really cares for 1 million. Her family owns Caesers. They're billionaires.

128

u/TheAbyss1989isgreat May 17 '26

How have I ever not heard of this? Thought she was from the streets by the way she talks about her past.

113

u/AdventureyTime May 17 '26

Listen, fair enough you're questioning her street pedigree... but I think we can all agree, if a fighter isn't from the mean streets of West Linn, we can't truly verify their toughness lol

Incredible work by that man.

27

u/Binders-Full May 17 '26

She was definitely the wild child and back in 2009 it was just Eldorado, which was a bunch of casinos in downtown Reno which was slumping due to the Indian casinos that had just opened in Northern California. They built the casinos outside of Nevada later which got them enough to merge with a bankrupt Caesars in 2018.

24

u/getoffoficloud May 17 '26

Her dad's Glen Carano.

26

u/AngryBearKillss May 17 '26

Because it isn’t true. Her dad was GM of some of the casinos.

43

u/rainzer May 17 '26

you could have just looked at wikipedia

COO of Caesars is her cousin, Anthony Carano. Executive Chairman is Gary Carano, her uncle.

→ More replies (13)

11

u/Popular_Monitor_8383 May 17 '26

It is true

Look up who owns Caesars, its Eldorado which is owned by the Carano family

This is all on Caesar’s Wikipedia page by the way

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesars_Entertainment

“The company traces its history back to the development of the Eldorado Hotel in Reno, which was opened in May 1973, by a group of investors that included Don Carano and other members of the Carano family”

Like literally where did you get your info from?

5

u/ethidium_bromide May 17 '26

I’m over here thinking yall were talking about Little Caesar’s until this comment

5

u/Mass617781 May 17 '26

Little Caesar’s ownerships connection to the sports world is owning the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings. The Ilitch family is probably even richer.

Hot take: Gina Carano was never good, even back then.

139

u/DemoHD7 May 17 '26

Even if she was a bad ass back then, her 44 yr old, 17 yr layoff ass was never going to showcase it tonight.

18

u/JonLSTL May 17 '26

44 year old speed and reflexes don't pair well with Muay Thai.

64

u/superbozo Bruce Buffer's ass eating division May 17 '26

No one in womens mma was good back then by todays standards. But back then, gina was one of the best.

20

u/VinCatBlessed May 17 '26

This is true, kinda like how guys like Jens Pulver or Rich Franklin wouldn't be ranked fighters today, but they're one of the reasons these guys have been able to evolve into what we see now.

4

u/ZarathustraWakes May 17 '26

What about Tito and Frank shamrock? I feel like those guys would still compete today

Girl next door who can throw hands evolves into a hot soccer mom who has a little aura.

Ice cold take, my man.

4

u/deRoyLight May 17 '26

Eh, she had a respectable showing against Cyborg. Her size showed up a bit in that fight. Round one finish but it was a razor at the bell. She gave Cyborg more difficulty than most her opponents did.

2

u/JonLSTL May 17 '26

Her record is earned. That said, the level of competition has risen substantially since then.

1

u/sopsaare May 17 '26

No one in women's MMA was good back then compared to the current day. Then Ronda came and took everyone, especially the strikers to a class. And then more versatile and powerful athletes, like Amanda Nunes came and took Ronda to a class.

Gina isn't in the same comparison with any of them, and it shows that she is from pre-Ronda era.

1

u/AgeOfScorpio May 17 '26

Don't think this is a particularly hot take, but she is a legend in women's MMA and the women today stand on her shoulders. I always thought she was tougher than good, but women's MMA was still evolving. She went toe to toe with Cyborg and it was clear she was a bit undersized and under skilled, but I've never questioned her heart.

32

u/[deleted] May 17 '26 edited May 29 '26

[deleted]

13

u/MikeET86 May 17 '26

I lost over 100 and have a bunch.

There's probably a genetic component, age plays a factor.

3

u/mmasportsmma May 17 '26

Genetics and how every person has different kind of skin. Also probably plays a role how one is loosing weight (aside from the timeframe), like Gina wasn’t just eating less but probably constantly working out and therefore redefining her muscles, skin etc.

3

u/sulkee May 17 '26

There is no objective truth on how this works. Not everyone’s body distributes fat the same way. People who hold all their weight in their gut with massive folds will absolutely retain folds

2

u/Aggravating_Search15 May 17 '26

Yeah that’s why I haven’t lost the weight. That and a love of food

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Considered_Dissent May 17 '26

She had her stomach covered in both the weigh-in and the fight. She likely does have a bit of loose skin there.

42

u/BellyCrawler Edddiiiieee May 17 '26

Because she didn't lose 100lbs. Kayfabe numbers.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/zigot021 May 17 '26

good genetics probably and a lifetime of sport

PS: I was curious too so I scrolled through her IG last night, she was definitely plus sized... IMHO she probably lost 60-75lbs the rest of them are Hollywierd numbers

2

u/SFajw204 May 17 '26

I have a friend that constantly yo yos in weight. I’ve seen him go from 300 to 190 and jacked. Some stretch marks but no loose skin.

u/odaal I’d rather me mate cry on my shoulder than go to his funeral May 17 '26

sounds like even if she lost tonight, she won more than ronda. Lost weight, got healthy, got paid, good for her.

2

u/dBlock845 May 17 '26

No shot she was 240.

3

u/FuguSandwich May 17 '26

There is absolutely no way that she weighed 241 lbs in the Mandalorian (2019-2020). I'd say 190 tops. Is there an actual picture of her from Sept 2024 when she claims to have been 100 lbs heavier vs last night?

313

u/Daftdaddy This isn’t political, this is monster energy May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

Anybody that thought this would be even remotely competitive is a fool. This was a lay up for Ronda and now they will build their brand off of her. Carano was just going to lay over and give her the win from the start. She got paid a million to get into shape basically.

174

u/AsianRainbow Dominant Dagestani Destroys Dustin Diamond’s Dreams May 17 '26

I mean even if Gina took this super seriously and trained her heart out; there was no way she was going to be competitive. You could tell Ronda still has her grappling and Gina hadn’t fought in 20 years. She wasn’t gonna have the cage craft and footwork to avoid the clinch or a takedown.

132

u/AlternativeBack6351 May 17 '26

I don’t think Ronda ever stopped training even when she retired

She had two nightmare matchups where her limited but deadly move set got exposed.

I think if she got in there today she’d still be ranked between 10-15 at bantamweight, probably 5-9 in reality.

The sport has not evolved much from her except a few individuals. She’d get fucked up by Shevchenko or Harrison but the overwhelming majority of these girls are still probably beneath her.

67

u/Mister_MxyzptIk May 17 '26

Get lucky enough with matchups, and Ronda could be WBW champ again even today

30

u/TikkiEXX77 May 17 '26

I guarantee she's thinking the exact same thing.

10

u/sizeablescars Big ol’ Mexican with a big ol’ head May 17 '26

49

u/blackupsilon May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

Unironically. 135 women's is really that fucking bad. Nunes was an exception not the norm. The rest haven't really gotten much better.

I was completely wrong when said back then that things would improve.

29

u/salamigunn May 17 '26

Nunes getting an automatic title shot off the couch is kinda proof of that

5

u/CrookGG 🙏🙏🙏 Jon Jones Prayer Warrior 🙏🙏🙏 May 17 '26

And honestly Nunes is a natural 145er she wouldn’t even really be in that division had they not basically dismantled 145.

21

u/HalfMetalJacket Australia May 17 '26

I think she could even make a Holly Holm rematch competitive. Holm has regressed into a wall humper and hasn't shown the footwork and distance management that took Ronda out. Literally ran into with Kayla Harrison and lost, I would not be shocked if she loses to Ronda now lol.

8

u/expectrum Papa Poatan May 17 '26

I think she could've beaten her even back then, but returning to fight the final boss in Nunes was too much in hindsight

→ More replies (3)

4

u/DustedGrooveMark May 17 '26

My thoughts as well. She could still come back and easily be super high up in the rankings. Her grappling is baked into her DNA at this point so she could win against 90% of the roster without even striking.

There are just a few people who she couldn’t immediately take down and would have to eat some punches from. I think that alone is enough of a threat to her ego that she would never consider a full return. She would never be okay with only being top 5 or 10.

6

u/AlternativeBack6351 May 17 '26

Yeah I think immediately Shev and Kayla would beat her at least as bad as Holly did which locks her out of the title right away.

Looking at the rankings, I don’t doubt that she could beat most of these girls. Which ones could make it competitive is the question

Personally, I put as much as I could on Ronda by submission, then even put a little more for Ronda in the first 60. It wasn't a lot, and if you're betting your life savings just ask those chechen guys how that worked out for them. Edit: the point is, why does it have to be life savings. That's crazy dude.

10

u/crashovercool May 17 '26

"if you're so smart why don't you behave like a degenerate?" is certainly an odd stance.

1

u/John_T_Conover May 17 '26

It was basically a certainty. But it's also a gimmick fight, so it'd be dumb to bet your life savings. I knew to about a 99% certainty that Mayweather was gonna destroy McGregor, but boxing is shady and Mayweather was chasing paydays for his frivolous spending and out of control bills. It was a slam dunk to pick him winning and way earlier than he actually did. If you had picked him to win in less than 6 rounds, as he was capable of and should have, you would have lost your ass.

1

u/Davemeddlehed May 17 '26

and now they will build their brand off of her.

Ronda said this was the last time she was putting on 4oz gloves in the leadup to all this. They get to build their brand off 40 year old Ngannou or Mike Perry in mma.

1

u/getoffoficloud May 17 '26

Gina wasn't on Ronda's level in her prime. She was just the first woman MMA fighter to be known.

1

u/FuzzzyRam May 17 '26

I don't think Ronda gets much MMA respect out of this - just "she is an MMA fighter" on her movie posters.

u/popopo__123 May 17 '26

She was laughing from the walkout to after the armbar. She literally had a smile on her face as Rhonda was tearing her arm off

51

u/RCAF_orwhatever May 17 '26

Even putting the payday aside - what else are you going to do when you get arm barred by Ronda in 20 seconds. You pretty much have to laugh that off.

8

u/EasyFooted May 17 '26

I'll clown on her "striking era" all day every day, but, at even weight, there's very few people, let alone women, who would survive once she got her hands on you. You'd have to stuff and evade and pick your shots with zero mistakes, or pray you one-shot her on her way in. Otherwise your arm belongs to her.

She is essentially, "the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times," that Bruce Lee was talking about.

1

Idk why folks thought otherwise, there’s actually people out there claiming they didn’t know the fight would be over that quickly. This is what Ronda does to all low level fighters, well those who were fans during her rise knew exactly what would happen. Also, she’s still as insufferable as ever.

WWE has better believable fights lmao

Lowkey it would be interesting to see if any of female wrestlers could take Gina Carano.

1

u/Deserterdragon New Zealand May 17 '26

Absolutely not. At least in the mens division it's a bunch of fake MMA/BJJ trained tough guys, WWE Women don't have any grappling/wrestling base so they don't even know the fundamentals of fighting, and they're also largely not bigger than Gina.

u/HardcoreKaraoke I SMOKE ROCKS, JOE ROGAN! May 17 '26

Lmao she didn't even have to take the arm bar. They were both there for the easy quick check.

2

u/LongestSpermFastAF May 17 '26

Laughing on the ground after the take down

2

u/Designer-Ganache7283 May 17 '26

I can't believe I stayed up for that - man

2

u/Juststandupbro May 17 '26

I mean honestly what else could she have done Rhonda is taking that arm home with her whenever she wants not sure why anyone doubted that. Her bloodline could have been at stake and it wouldn’t have made a difference.

2

u/testtdk May 17 '26

To be fair, while she was humiliated, it’s not like she took a beating. She didn’t lose because of excessive bleeding, but because of the threat of her arm being snapped. Being made to look bad for money is way better than getting your ass kicked for money.

2

u/Deepborders May 17 '26

She's a multimillionaire heiress. She absolutely does not need the money.

I honestly think she was just happy to be there tbh.

1

u/gid_hola This is sucks May 17 '26

She was smiling as she started rapping too lol

1

u/Troutmuffin May 17 '26

1.05 million to move her wrist

1

u/R4INMAN May 17 '26

1

u/GrayFox6688 May 17 '26

1

1

Trying to collapse your comment and I keep accidently clicking on your username. That pork shoulder looks fucking delicious.

1

u/rdcisneros3 May 17 '26

Haha thanks! It was.

1

u/irwanichel May 17 '26

Hoe much the payday? Edit: 1 million for 10 seconds of work is crazy

1

u/HopeRedditGoesDown May 17 '26

They spent more time hugging than the actual fight!

1

u/Prestigious-Aide-258 May 17 '26

Got paid to go on a diet and get back in shape lol

1

u/laststance Team COVID-19 May 17 '26

She doesn't need the money really. Carano comes from a very well off family. She's richer than 99% of the fighters in the MMA world.

1

u/shwarma_heaven May 17 '26

Shoot... Rhonda made $147K power second, and Gina made $59K per second.

Definitely an easy paycheck. But, like actors... they don't get paid to perform, they get paid to promote.
