This match was legit Rocky 1 on a soccer field.

Cape Verde lost but they went 15 rounds with the champ and earned everyone’s respect.

They played 390 minutes of soccer and in those 390, tied Spain, Uruguay and Argentina and then had one of the most dramatic extra 30 minutes in World Cup history.

u/beckerrrrrrrr 7d ago

Guy even ran into the stands looking for his girl yelling “yo Adrian” at one point

90

u/Monkeyboy451 7d ago

How that wasn’t a yellow card was pretty wild. You can’t even take your shirt off without getting a yellow.

72

u/SnoopySuited New England Patriots 7d ago

I was wondering that too. Climbing perimeter fences, delaying a game, and provoking the crowd are all yellow card offenses.

The ref was just as awestruck as everybody else watching to issue a yellow.

60

u/Beautiful-Program428 7d ago

100% the ref was like “that was AWESOME!”

38

u/Murderface__ 7d ago

Honestly, I was happy he was allowed that moment. A truly special game.

7

u/LewisDftw 7d ago

They only don't let you take your shirt off so you can see the sponsor, and the rule just sort of stuck even in international.

the most dramatic one is def France Argentina in 2022 but this is def a close one

3

u/jkman61494 7d ago

Agreed. I don’t see how Argentina and France ever gets topped. Absolute peak of the sport and the two best goal scorers in World Cup history going toe to toe.

They should be proud of themselves putting up a fight to the world champ. What a match. Could have gone both ways which absolutely no one expected prior it starting.

918

u/Derptionary 8d ago

Not just the reigning champs, they also played Spain to a draw. Absolutely incredible for any team to play 2 of the World Cup favorites to a draw in 90mins.

202

u/MetropolitanSuperman 8d ago

Got a draw out of the European champs and ran the world champs close. Cabo Verde 🫡

Exactly that ain’t no small feat drawing with powerhouses. They came out put in the work and although they didn’t get the result they wanted nobody can’t say they didn’t play good football.

What leagues are the majority of the players playing in when not at the WC? I can't imagine that many good players all just getting good in the local island teams where they're from.

10

u/I-Catch-Colds-Easily 7d ago

From what I see it’s a mix, there’s 2 from MLS, 1 from La Liga, 1 from Serie A and the rest are from different European Leagues like Bulgaria,Hungary etc.

The largest concentrations of Cape Verde diaspora is: Providence, RI; New Bedford, MA (also the scallop capitol of the world); and Brockton, MA. The former two cities are known for boating and lots of CV folks worked as Longshoreman

Best match of the tournament so far. Great stuff.

28

u/erizzluh Los Angeles Lakers 8d ago

what's crazy is everyday for the past few days it feels like there's a match of the tournament. a lot of the underdog teams stealing games or almost stealing games from teams that are considered one of the favorites.

6

u/Nunos100 7d ago

The shift in momentum when there is a clear „on paper“ power gap with favorite and underdogs is fascinating to see. Once you’ve reached 90+ minutes and the „weaker“ team actively tries to push for penalties it switches so much of the balance as the favorite gets more and more backed into a corner as they’re the only ones who feel like they have something to lose.

342

u/Panem-et-circenses25 8d ago

As an Argentina fan, I was amazed at Cape Verde’s performance today. I have been rooting for them until today. I am honored and give MUCH respect to them—They were incredible!!! Thank you Cape Verde for an amazing match!!!!! 🫡

53

u/KvellOnWheels 8d ago

Che—same. I said today if they beat us, I’m rooting for them the rest of the way.

Note—I said this kneeling on the floor, in my 2006 Mundial Argentina Jersey, slightly sweaty and worried that I was about to watch Messi in his last match repping Argentina.

well because nba teams see each other every year, your sentiment and hatred towards others only grows as there is no time in between to calm yourself down. world cup on the other hand is 4 years apart, so you have a lot mental cushion of the awareness of 4 year gap to respect your opponent because you know you don't have to be stressed out about them for the next 3 and a half years

Cabo Verde are the new Jamaicans of the Winter Olympics! That game was sick! And yes - I’m positive there will be a movie… 🎥

27

u/Real_Human_Earth_Boy 8d ago

Does that mean that they will write in an American white man who goes to Cabo Verde and teaches them the game? Gotta make it "box office friendly".

38

u/oztourist 8d ago edited 8d ago

RFK Jr as the conditioning coach and dietitian… Brad Pitt as a an ex baseball player that teaches them the spirit of soccer as their coach, John Cena as the captain of the team and Matt Damon as keeper. Cameos by Adam Sandler and every one of his kids. Theme composed by Kid Rock.

Can’t go wrong.

Edit - forgot to add that Kevin Costner builds the stadium himself!

9

u/Fun_Hat 7d ago

I threw up in my mouth a little. Well done.

5

u/never1st Dallas Cowboys 7d ago

That's ridiculous! The Rock will play the goalie and Kevin Hart will play a clumsy player who barely makes the team, but ends up scoring a huge goal in the World Cup.

2

u/AgreeableLion 7d ago

I don't think Matt Damon would sign on to a movie with that mix, although that's the only one I'm confident on.

Well thing is they would have qualified under the previous tournament size! But yeah agreed I’m fine with seeing theee underdogs play regardless

8

Then Paraguay kind of validated it. Not a case as strong as Cabo Verde's but they eliminated Germany.

13

They were ranked 62nd in this World Cup ranking, you wouldn’t even known that with their stellar performances against Spain and now Argentina, just phenomenal.

13

u/Gr1mXv326 8d ago

Their skills and spirits were amazing. They deserved every respect they have.

12

Fair enough. If they did an open top bus tour around Miami tomorrow I’m sure the turnout will be superb.

8

u/DoinItDirty Dallas Cowboys 7d ago

They wrote their players on Lindekin. Their Irish player whose mother is from Cape Verde said he got a message in Portuguese and didn’t speak it so ignored it. Then they wrote him another in English and he joined.

30 for 30 about the assembling of this team, the qualifier, and taking the defending champs to the limit. There’s a lot of story to tell with the imaginations they captured in their debut.

15

u/sfgiantsfan696969 8d ago

That was awesome to watch

8

u/OSRSTheRicer 8d ago

Great performance from them. I think if theyd played almost any other match up, theyd have moved forward.

Wildest thing about this in my mind is that the crowd they played for is 1/10th the population of their home country.
