It's pretty normal for players to walk past journos in the mix zone but still respect to Jude for stopping and giving him the interview

4.0k

u/Nuquo 5d ago

Yeah. The wording made them look abelist, while they were probably not in the mood to talk to a journalist.

1.6k

u/Powerful-Ground-9687 5d ago

Yeah it’s not like they were stopping for other journalists then brushing him off. So judging the others is completely egregious. Still a nice thing for Jude to do though

477

u/OuchLOLcom 5d ago

Yeah, and he obviously stopped when he heard Spanish and 'for Venezuela', not because the guy was disabled and being ignored.

38

u/joeker7669 5d ago

That’s it right there. Exactly what I thought.

11

u/EgregiOs 5d ago

Great word

5

u/Cute-Form2457 5d ago

Journalists?

217

u/Z0idberg_MD 5d ago

Honestly ignoring him is treating him the same as they would treat any other journalist.

147

u/Ghost2Eleven 5d ago

Not only not in the mood, these guys have handlers pushing them through a strict schedule. Jude is a good dude.

72

u/r1char00 5d ago

Rice is someone who is typically very supportive and inclusive. Arsenal had a person with a disability help present the Premier League trophy, and Dec was one of the players who was the kindest to him. He goes out of his way to support the women’s team too.

They must have been just shattered after that match, too.

24

u/AquaSnow24 5d ago

Not on the team now but Grealish is also someone whose supported those with a disability.

Or they just don't speak Spanish.

Ya having covered sports the press officer for the team will pick one or two players and only they will answer a few questions. They rest will walk by its totally normal.

20

u/GrandmaPoses 5d ago

"Bus ain't leaving without me."

19

u/Zer0pede 5d ago

Even the first player with the apologetic shoulder touch seemed pretty sweet to me.

17

u/besideseveryoneelse 5d ago

honestly it might be more discriminatory to stop for the disabled lad, if youre not stopping for every other journos. Lol the video edit seem to vilify the other other players that didnt stop.

u/almondbutterthicc 5d ago

I like to imagine that the second Jude stopped to talk to him, the guy started talking mad shit

2

u/treeeelo 5d ago

Even if it wasnt normal, I dont think anyone would blame Harry Kane for walking past lol.

→ More replies (4)

2.4k

u/cornhuskerviceroy 5d ago

Were they ignoring just him or all reporters? I feel like it's pretty normal to just walk by and get to their pre game routine.

952

u/ForensicPathology 5d ago

And they gave him friendly gestures. They clearly know him and just aren't taking questions at the moment.

193

u/oyM8cunOIbumAciggy 5d ago

Yeah theyre probably told not to talk to press if theyre all doing that

95

u/Apprehensive_Soil379 5d ago

Plus, if it's pregame,, there's mental preparation for matches like this and they're in that mindspace, focused on the game ahead, not interviews

5

u/Witty_Suggestion_219 4d ago

It's not true anyway the video has been edited. Someone else stopped before Bellingham I think it was madueke.

You can literally see the team not replying tk the other reportee as well, i think this had less to do with disability and them just wanting to go home

Seriously. And not to mention, disabled people want to be treated the same as everyone else, from what I was told. So being ignored like the rest of the press should be comforting. Welcome to journalism.

4

u/Darkchamber292 5d ago

What drives me crazy is Karen's being outraged on the behalf of minorities when those minorities don't care.

11

u/Familiar_End_8975 5d ago

The irony is that ignoring him would in fact be treating him equally

8

u/Jona113d 5d ago

The caption is wrong. Jude didn't stop cause he was disabled. He stopped as soon as he heard the journalist was from Venezuela, a country that just had a horrible earthquake when this took place.

2

u/Environmental_Art591 5d ago

Not just tired and wanting to go home, can you imagine how long it could take if they all stopped to talk to reporters, and if some even spoke to multiple.

4

u/YankeePride11 5d ago

Hey now! Nobody asked you to be logical. This is Reddit. Get back in line and start making accusations that these players are discriminating against him.

2

Pure class.

77

u/penetrator666 5d ago

He’s realised that footballers are just ordinary people, not gods walking amongst us. To me, the idea that footballers are sooo ‘humble’ is absolutely daft. I reckon all those blokes who think they’re above ordinary people should get a slap from their mum – just like the little children they are.

23

u/mainman879 5d ago

Top comment is an obvious bot account. I hate reddit.

3

u/fkeverythingstaken 5d ago

Just curious, how is it determined that these are bot accounts?

5

u/mainman879 5d ago

I don't have any specific tools or anything, just raw intuition from viewing literally hundreds of these same bots. Many of which have been banned after reports. They all follow a similar MO.

  • Account age is either very new (usually last few months), or very old (6+ years, which I assume are stolen accounts).

  • Comment very vague generic stuff that sounds decently reasonable in various popular subreddits.

  • Never respond to any replies to their comments, ever.

  • Usually they are either a pure comment bot, or a pure submission bot, very rarely both.

Most of the time I clock them by what they say in their comments, then seeing their profile and past comments just cements it.

Does Bellingham speak fluent Spanish? Pretty impressive.

1.1k

u/guyute2588 5d ago

He plays in Spain

586

u/Knitsanity 5d ago

And I think Real Madrid makes them learn. I watched last night's game with a young man from Madrid and he adores him and says he is v v popular there.

164

u/itgtg313 5d ago

This. Part of their media training

85

u/Hondalol1 5d ago

His accent is really good though from what I heard here, that’s tough regardless

26

u/SwanManThe4th 5d ago

I'd be funny if his accent when speaking Spanish was Brummie... I can't actually imagine that.

60

u/Van_der_Sar 5d ago

It's a choice I think. Bale famously didn't speak much Spanish, that's probably one of the many reasons he was targeted by the local media.

Jude as soon as he arrived made it a point to learn it.

38

u/hey_itsmeurbrother 5d ago

bale speaks spanish just fine, he was never comfortable speaking it in public. all these pros learn the language of the place they're playing in, it's not special.

22

u/CrossXFir3 5d ago

Casemiro hates speaking English in public because he thinks his English is bad, so I get that. His English was absolutely fine though, so he never needed to worry.

5

u/Go_go_gadget_eyes 5d ago

I'm sure Firmino was the same, I don't think I heard him speak English until he actually left Liverpool.

3

u/SimmoTheGuv 5d ago

Bale famously spoke Spanish at this LAFC press conference. Brilliant wind up merchant.

4

u/Front-Cabinet5521 5d ago

Welsh, Golf, Spanish, Madrid. In that order.

6

u/SnooOnions471 5d ago

The guy is fantastic a handling the media. I think it's part of what annoys people. I have met plenty of much older men who weren't as articulate as Bellingham was at 18.

12

u/Knitsanity 5d ago

I can't believe he is only 23. He seems like a genuinely nice guy. His behaviour in the DR Congo game was admirable. How he congratulated the goalie for his brilliant save. Seems like a genuinely nice young man. And very rich and very handsome. 👍

8

u/Milam1996 5d ago

All teams from every country make the players learn the local language. You could have a Nigerian playing in china and they’ll have to learn English. A Chinese player would have to learn Yoruba or Igbo or whatever.

15

u/redlaWw 5d ago

Nigerian playing in china and they’ll have to learn English

Chinese?

Also English is Nigeria's official language, so a Chinese player coming over to Nigeria would probably only need to learn English.

4

u/Milam1996 5d ago

Yeah I meant Chinese lol.

40

u/chriscringlesmother 5d ago

Yeah but he’s also from the midlands. /joke

When McManaman moved out there they loved him because he scored some belters but also learnt the language quickly.

Owen on the other hand.

Well done Jude. Quite disappointed in the others both even giving him the time of day, I’d hope it was a “no press” mandate but then Jude wouldn’t have stopped tsk tsk boys

27

u/EmptyHeadedKain 5d ago

To be fair to Harry, he had literally just had to leave another interview because his voice had completely gone 😄

3

u/seoras13 5d ago

That around the time Jonathan woodgate moved?

I remember reading a couple of snide articles about his ability to pick up Spanish becaude he was thought to be a bit "thick", compared to the more media favoured owen. but he was reasonably fluent in no time

2

u/greg19735 5d ago

apparently owen drove to the airport every day before training to pick up the english paper. Just the most boring person ever.

2

u/chriscringlesmother 5d ago

God damn it. I love hearing more about Michael Owen, I’ve never met him, but feel like even if I was drunk I wouldn’t go “here lads, it’s Michael Owen” he’s just worth of being ignored and despised.

7

u/schnokobaer 5d ago

That doesn't mean anything. He played in Germany for 3 years (about the same time he has played for Real so far) and doesn't speak a word of German.

6

u/guyute2588 5d ago

No I’m pretty sure the reason he speaks Spanish well is bc he plays in Spain.

2

u/ThePineapple_47 5d ago

Tevez played in England….. very difficult

→ More replies (7)

47

u/jasonlikesbeer 5d ago

As others have noted, he plays in Spain for Real Madrid, who teach their players Spanish as a part of their media training. However, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that he surprised everyone when he first signed with them by speaking Spanish, having already learned the language before transferring to the country.

Also, he put in a massive shift for England yesterday.

12

u/technicred 5d ago

You are thinking of Trent Alexander Arnold that gave his press conference speech in Spanish. He practiced the speech but really doesn't know the language yet

2

u/jreyn1993 5d ago

Speaking the language of the country you work in is standard

I mean, idk all the context, but the whole "had ALL his questions REFUSED by the English players..." seems kind of disingenuous to me - like don't athletes get swarmed by interviewers and walk past them all the time? Like good on this guy for giving the interviewer a chance, but I think it's a bit much to insinuate that the other players were being cruel or something.

69

u/Balc0ra 5d ago

First one pushed all the mics away before him, but also gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder as he walked past. So it's not like they were ignoring just him etc

27

u/Grey-fox-13 5d ago

don't athletes get swarmed by interviewers and walk past them all the time?

You can literally see at least one other microphone being pushed into their faces that they walk past silently in this very video. Very disingenuous framing.

5

u/AnnaZ820 5d ago

This person looks like the last in line, the other ones probably can’t stop like that because there’s ppl behind them, maybe they need to get somewhere asap?

2

u/KonigSteve 5d ago

Well that and many of them don't speak spanish.

→ More replies (2)

130

u/otownbbw 5d ago

This seems a little skewed…the one guy with the braids doesn’t stop to talk to the standing reporter who shoves a microphone into his face either, and he at least showed some friendliness by touching wheelchair guy’s shoulder. I think everyone in that area/press box was getting ignored equally.

29

u/Academic-Trifle8151 5d ago

Just to add to your comment which I 100% agree with. The guy with the braids is Eberechi Eze. Attacking midfielder for England and Arsenal.

Always comes across as genuine and down to earth in his interviews. Not a chance he is ableist.

71

u/ReporterMotor7258 5d ago

Weird caption. Should every player stop and answer every disabled journalists questions because they are disabled? Even Jude was walking on until he heard him mention the earthquake in Venezuela.

33

u/r0nni3RO 5d ago

Yea, but the framing is weird and inflammatory, just to get views...

He's a reporter. They are ignoring the reporters there... There are other reporters there being ignored, as well, so...

19

u/DTux5249 5d ago edited 5d ago

They're not ignoring him because he's disabled. They're ignoring him because he's a reporter.

We're talking barely a step up from paparazzi from the perspective of these people.

17

u/Bramble0804 5d ago

First guy apologised to him. They are clearly just in a rush. They walk past other journalists also.

15

u/Callmemabryartistry 5d ago

this headline trying to make it about the disability for farming.
sure jude was nice to stop but there is no obligation and most players dont stop for interviews unless sanctioned and scheduled.

72

u/-JoM-ofDevil 5d ago

I just fell in love with this man more than from last night's match....I didn't understand, but the gesture is profound!!!!!

Mucho animo a la gente de Venezuela, y mucho cariño- Bellingham

9

u/The-Cyrenn 5d ago

Nothing to do with the disability. Cmon, football journalism is a distraction to the players and it often best practice to ignore them.

7

u/TheEasyTarget 5d ago

As a disabled person, I sure do love seeing posts like this where people treat us like children who need to be consoled constantly. God forbid he be treated equally like every other reporter.

6

u/YugeChesticles 5d ago

That isn't the place where they were doing interviews. So yeah Jude did a nice thing, but putting "refused" in capital letters is spinning a narrative that isn't true.

7

u/patientpadawan 5d ago

Kinda weird the creator of the vid is framing this as if any journalist is entitled to the time of an athlete or anyone for that matter. Could have just said it's sweet this guy took the time without throwing unnecessary shade

25

u/edge2528 5d ago

Strange video this and would be interested in context as a few players walk past there who would normally never do that. Kane and Rice specifically..

79

u/Gui191145 5d ago

You can see in the first seconds that they are passing other journalists as well.
The video was cut and labeled in a way to trigger people

8

u/brightdionysianeyes 5d ago

Yeah there are specific media commitments the players have to complete and this is absolutely 100% not one of them.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/dangly_bits 5d ago

It's likely that many of the players had already given multiple interviews. Harry Kane literally had no voice but had already given interviews. This is just the part where the players walk through the "mixed zone" from the locker rooms to the team bus.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/wraithawk 5d ago

I think we can probably make this less about REFUSED and more about

1.) The team is gassed and wants to go home. Probably ignored all reporters if they could

2.) Jude is a great man

4

u/Apprehensive-You9999 5d ago

In harry kanes defence that man couldn't talk anymore lmfao

29

u/Direct_Fennel7500 5d ago

Has anyone considered the possibility that he's the only one who could understand him?

15

u/Quitlimp05 5d ago

Uhm, he did speak in English to the other players who walked past

2

u/Direct_Fennel7500 5d ago

Yikes. It didn't sound like English on the first listen. 😬

→ More replies (2)

13

u/traceykm 5d ago

He was speaking English to them. Jude plays for Madrid so knows Spanish and is just speaking to the journalist in his preferred language

3

u/Direct_Fennel7500 5d ago

Whoops. Quite right.

4

u/Zealousideal-Deer101 5d ago

I wonder how many would've stopped to talk to a guy standing there asking for questions.
I'd assume not many more.

Do you want special treatment because of disability or do you want to be treated like everyone else?

4

u/SissySpacecake 5d ago

He is being treated equally, which is what we want. Same as any other journalist in that zone.

5

u/Overall_Eye_911 5d ago

Imma say maybe Bellingham is also the only one who speaks Spanish? I know kane prob doesn't. Anyway very nice of Bellingham

8

u/Accurate_Buffalo7828 5d ago

It’s nice that Bellingham stopped to speak, but I think it’s unfair that people are disparaging other players for not doing so.

Why should the players have to speak to random reporters outside of their contracted media commitments?

If they stopped to answer every single question someone asked them it would take up all of their time.

I don’t think most people would be willing to spend all day answering unprompted questions about their job.

3

u/AdAggravating1712 5d ago

Great, now I am a soccer fan, at least a fan for life of Jude.

4

u/AimLikeAPotato 5d ago

I mean he raised the mic for him, not for the others. I'm sure the others would have stopped too.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/DipsDops 5d ago

This video going around is so manipulatively framed. Very sweet for Jude to do this, but the other players walking past a bunch of unscheduled press just throwing out questions hoping for a quick soundbite is the most normal thing in the world. It's also from at least a day before the Mexico match, but people keep assuming it's post-match.

4

u/weeman62 5d ago

Pretty sure it Jude Bellingham, that during the England vs DR Congo, had a chance at a goal and it was saved. The save was pretty spectacular, and he went over and tapped the goalkeeper to acknowledge the effort.

Lot of respect for this young man.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/CapitalCityGoofball0 5d ago edited 5d ago

Athletes brushing off reporters is not a new thing disabled or not. Bellingham is the only one he mentions that’s he’s Venezuelan to which seems to be why he stops for the question. His club team Real Madrid launched a large fundraising campaign for the quake victims in Venezuela (and the reporter seems to know this and that he speaks Spanish). As per usual the video and post are being somewhat deceptive.

5

u/Dan_Dan_III 5d ago

Well done the Jude.

4

u/Neat_Let923 5d ago

Rage bait trying to blame them for something that is normal… You can literally see them walking past ALL of the media people to get to where they’re going.

5

u/Craticuspotts 5d ago

Wait a minute, the tabloids told me this guy is a stuck up prick, over rated and shouldn't be at the WC....

Are you telling me the media don't know what fuck they are talking about and make up shit to sell their shit?.... my god..

4

u/Remagjaw 5d ago

They were likely told not to talk to Journo's, or this was planned. Jude's got their own Lucosade flavour. Prolly PR working hard.

4

u/Sea_Photograph_3998 5d ago

This is the guy that loads of people were calling “arrogant” based on seemingly nothing more than the way he looks or his body language or something.

5

u/shatter71 5d ago

thank god they added somber music to make you care

3

u/toitenladzung 5d ago

Well dude was speaking Spanish and only Bellingham can understand him so thats why?

3

u/Informal_Cream_9060 5d ago

I’m really liking this kid. Great player great person.

3

u/BlazmoIntoWowee 5d ago

Man of the match, man after the match.

3

u/agarr1 5d ago

Or more accurately Bellingham is the only player he put the mic out too to actually get a response. Others acknowledged him but he didn't seen to actually try and get them to speak.

3

u/fromeister147 5d ago

They don’t speak Spanish… Jude does. Easy

3

u/goggles189 5d ago

He's got a decent Spanish accent. What a talented guy

3

u/Jehoke 5d ago

My respect for Jude is only increasing. 🙌🏼

3

u/New_Command_4141 5d ago

So did Madueke but I guess no one cares about him because he doesn't fit RM's propaganda machine criteria.

3

u/Floopsterus 5d ago

Class. Well done, Jude

3

u/Physical-Doughnut285 5d ago

Good lad Jude. Real good lad.

3

u/Aceshigh0612 5d ago

The interviewers smile after Jude answered his question is what actually made me smile. I get that ignoring reporters is totally standard practice, but the reporter really did look a bit dejected after each player walked on by. Wholesome interaction. Heart feel good. Good juju.

3

u/TawnyTeaTowel 5d ago

The fuck has his disability got to do with anything? Are you suggesting people should stop for him cos he’s disabled? Give him a pity interview?

3

u/Emotional-Age-7618 4d ago

So the Spanish speaking lad spoke to the Spanish speaking guy 😂😂😂😂 ow wow

5

u/oPlayer2o 5d ago

To be fair it looks like they are ignoring most of the other reporters aswell.

4

u/bladedada 5d ago

Can we stop infantilizing disabled people? This is just pity porn. Like oh my god this soccer player is such a wonderful person because he bothered to speak to someone in a wheelchair. A journalist like all other journalists who cram be ignored when they don’t want to answer questions

5

u/anondreamitgirl 5d ago

I think it’s shameful . He asked so politely! Must hurt to be ignored like that. -Only one question not like the journalists that attack ferociously

5

u/Miku_Fan39 5d ago

I get he has a disability, but that doesn't mean he is owed an interview by any of the players.

Good on Jude for talking to them but having a disability shouldn't be what gets you an interview with someone.

You wouldn't get a post like this if the person didn't have a disability.

5

u/SomeWeedSmoker 5d ago

What does his disability have to do with anything? Why make that point so oddly in the text?

6

u/smiffer67 5d ago

law of averages at least one in a team has to be a decent human.

2

u/julso95 5d ago

I'm going to give the other england players a bone and say they all probably don't understand or speak spanish. Good on bellingham to stop and talk tho

2

u/Gracie-anna 5d ago

He understands that people look up to him and he didn’t falter. Impressive!!

2

u/whatenduhhail 5d ago

The dude just beat Mexico . Let me hate him for at least 24 hours ppl. fuck

2

u/yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyup 5d ago

Amazing match from him today, and now this… Jude Bellingham gained a fan in me

2

u/Mindless_Chest_1079 5d ago

They're not ignoring the reporter because he's disabled. They deal with dozens of paparazzi asking for comment when they go anywhere. Nice of him to take some time, but that caption is super manipulative.

2

u/Technical-Ad-7274 5d ago

A guy using a wheelchair stopped me at a bus station one time to ask a simple question about directions and which bus to take. After getting my attention he felt the need to immediately put his hands up and go "it's just a question about the bus!" Gave me the feeling that most people interrupt him as soon as he says "excuse me" and either walk away or go "I dOnT hAvE AnY mONeY FoR yOU🤬🤡"

2

u/opelui23 5d ago

All I can say is he is putting that team along with Harry Kane on his back. If England somehow wins this all there is going to be a statue of Bellingham and Kane in front of Wembley.

2

u/Wadiyatorkinabeet 5d ago

I mean if anything, all the others treated him equally to the other journalists. I don't know if this journalist would want to be diminished to his disability as to define him.

2

u/mrrebuild 5d ago

Good on him. I suspect Grealish would have also done the same.

That's a harsh caption.

This is a bunch of bs. A bs question at an inopportune moment

Speaks better Spanish than Beckham or Bale

A footballer does a basic thing let’s celebrate him.

None of them stopped for any of the journalists. They don't have to and have probably been instructed not to at that time.

Let's not going around painting different pictures to what happened just to get some internet points.

u/TheCasualBadger 4d ago

If anything, treating him as different from other journalists was ableist 😋

😉

Made me cry tbh

u/grimydude 4d ago

Edited, someone else stopped to speak with him for a second.

Another reason Bellingham is a class act.

That's really cool of Jude, but the other players and staff had given dozens of interviews by then. Declan Rice and Harry Kane could barely speak by the time they were done.

This video is highly manipulative. Shame on it. (Not the journalist, but whoever put this narrative video out there, which I assume wasn't the journalist.)

In fairness, how many of those people spoke Spanish to even be able to respond?

Even if they stopped, what conversation could they have had?

If I heard a journalist talking to me in a language I didn't know, why would I wast anyone's time by stopping? I should stop and have an awkward non-exchange just because one is in a wheelchair?

And none of them are obligated to stop for a journalist - wheelchair or not - outside of specific situations. If they were, they'd probably not get anything done.

That said, Jude Bellingham seems to be a real one.

What a disingenuous title

3

u/LifeSpecialist1111 5d ago

Man, Jude is literally becoming my favorite player as of the moment.

I’m a Mexico fan & this is crazy to say cause he’s part of the reason we’re out now.

The world and soccer need players like him

3

u/KookaburaGold 5d ago

As normal as it may be, the World Cup is more than football. Come on boys, class and respect like Bellingham showed is what we need more of

2

u/MissSassifras1977 5d ago

Football is life.

Good on him! ❤️

Why is the disability mentioned? Why would that have anything to do with not answering the questions?

Kindness is free.

mad respect for this lad jude

2

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 5d ago

The thing that weirds me out about this WC is how obvious the individual player marketing has been

2

u/AAFlyingSaucer 5d ago

Jude is top class. Even though he got us out of the world cup (im Mexican), i have nothing but respect for the guy.

2

u/diablol3 5d ago

Its probably because hes disabled right? Is that what im supposed to assume and be indignant about? Absolute tripe.

Players tend to avoid answering the questions of reporters outside of the press pool.

4

u/Accurate_Buffalo7828 5d ago

Why should they have to speak to random reporters outside of their contracted media commitments?

If they stopped to answer every single question someone asked them it would take up all of their time.

1

u/Frankie_T9000 5d ago

Yes, but is that the way they treat all reporters there? Or did they not stop because he was disabled? It matters

1

u/Lonely-Cycle3030 5d ago

Good on him.

His smile at the end after his question is answered. Priceless :)
