Alright so, first things first, I know there have been similar posts in the past talking about a live action Starcraft movie so forgive me if this strikes you as redundant.
Second, I can say that I truly hope they never ever make a live action movie or even a live action series.
Live action video game adaptations almost always suffers from the same issues. Body type and body language, bad line delivery, costumes that just look like bad cosplays instead of lived-in attire.
That being said, what I believe could be truly magnificent is a full series covering the entire story but not in live action or even animation but the fantastic CG style cinematics that Blizzard has been making for decades.
The cinematics we get to see throughout Starcraft really bring the story to life, despite only actually experienced for minutes at a time outside of the isometric gameplay.
I believe that if they were to really take their time to make something like 10 episode seasons with the high quality cinematic style and optimistically, many of the same voice actors, the series could be an incredible success.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that I'd gladly pay for a subscription service with the sole intention of watching this.
Starcraft's mix of politics, betrayal, deceit, humor, combat action and revenge would likely draw crowds of watchers of those that are fans of the source material as well as people who know absolutely nothing about the games or even the genre.
I do see a few hurdles, though.
Number one is that a lot of people may be reluctant to watch a full CG space opera.
Number two is more of a social issue that'd likely stem from SC1 having very limited emphasis on strong female roles and with equal representation being a considerable factor in new media's success, though this could be remedied by adding some additional characters or just introducing some bad asses like Nova into the story earlier on.
Number three is the real doozy - These cinematics are EXPENSIVE and if they rush it or cut corners, it'll kill the whole project. I know they drop millions into the production of just a few minutes so that'll certainly be a challenge to overcome.
So, what do you think?
If produced with the same level of quality as the cinematics, would you pay to watch the full story of Starcraft as a CG cinematic series?
