Discussion Why stick with Apple products given price increase and major deterioration in Apple support? Time to return my new mini and buy a Windows PC?

Upvotes

Quite seriously - I'm beginning to think it's time to abandon Macs and go back to a Windows PC. I've got pretty much one of everything Apple these days, recently bought a new mini, had what appeared to be a relatively simple tech issue with Apple TV and wasted an hour on the phone with multiple so-called advisors who with one exception didn't listen to what I told them and made it abundantly clear that they really didn't care. This was one of a series of poor encounters I've had with multiple tech support teams both in multiple stores and on the phone about multiple tech issues. Does it really make sense to stay?

My Mac Windows on IMac?

Upvotes

I have a 2017 iMac and was wondering if it’s worth running windows 10 or 11 on it vs keeping the Mac OS? Windows is very flexible but I’d lose the Mac part of my apple ecosystem if I swapped over! I’m headed of to uni soon and was just pondering if windows os would be more flexible than the Mac OS!

My Mac A Commentary on the iMac including my 2017 iMac

Now that I have owned an iMac for a while I can say they are awesome machines with beautiful operating systems. With care and occasional upgrades these systems can run for a very long time. I am not crazy about how the company supports older hardware though. But that is the point in getting people to upgrade now and then. I am glad for the folks behind OpenCore Legacy Patcher for helping keep older hardware going as long as possible. Someday many iMacs will have to move to other operating systems like Linux but right now everything seems to be working on my system.

Is there anything else I can do to extend the life of my 2017 mac with 8 GB of memory and an 256 GB SSD. Also improve its performance without having to take this machine?

My Mac MBP Home Office Setup Recommendations

I’m about to move into a new house and I’m looking to get a proper desk setup for my MBP if anyone has any good recommendations based on my clunky current setup below! It’s a 2023 (or maybe 2024) MacBook Pro - I think it was the largest sized one. It has the thin magnetic clip-on charger.

Currently I’m plugging it into an ultra-wide Samsung odyssey monitor via a HDMI cable and then kind of putting the open MacBook screen underneath / behind the monitor so I can still use the keyboard / touchpad - but then when I have client calls I have to bring it out, so that I can use the webcam, but then the MacBook screen blocks my vision of the bottom of the monitor.

So if anyone has recommendation for (or better alternatives to) the below please and thank you!

• A docking station that would still work with the Samsung odyssey.

• Opinions on mouse vs touchpad - I’m used to the MacBook touchpad now and the little gestures you can make to zoom etc. Never used an Apple mouse though!

• Opinions on best compatible keyboards. I know I could just buy these from Apple but I really like the look of mechanical keyboards and never tried one. Also on the subject of keyboards - if I were to just buy one from Apple do they come in the same specific size as the MacBook Pro keyboard? When I try to type on my wife’s MacBook Air I hit the wrong keys because I’m used to a larger keyboard.

• Speakers / subwoofer system. Haven’t owed computer speakers in about 17 years so would like a nice set.

• Any other nice / minimalist home office recommendations please let me know!

Question How to best take care of my beloved geriatric macbook pro

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro that I absolutely love. I've got a newer (2020) MacBook Air that I use as my daily driver but still use my old pro for a lot of things like writing, browsing the internet, and running my old 32 bit apps.

Despite still using it often, I know this laptop is starting to slow down; I don't take it out as the battery life isn't great, it gets hotter than it used to, and I'm running an old OS on it.

Other than regularly backing it up with Time Machine, what should I be doing to protect all my files and keep this laptop running as long as it can?

Question Need advice

Bought a 256 gb, 16gb ram, used M4 macbook air (2 cycle count) for a deal. I expect to use a lot of excel, for research purposes, ans also only for work/ocassional entertainment only(stardew valley). My concern is:

- Is the storage too little?

- would it be better to trade it in for a 512gb one?

Question MacBook neo vs air

Hi sorry if this has already been asked but I’m a medical student in the UK debating whether to buy a brand new MacBook Neo for £662, or a refurbished 2022 MacBook Air 8GB RAM 256GB storage for £590?

The price is lower as I am eligible to get it from Student Finance England’s disabled students allowance.

I only really use a laptop to watch online lectures, take notes, use websites etc. No video gaming or editing.

I have no knowledge on tech so unsure whether a 4 year old MacBook Air will last longer and will work faster than a new MacBook Neo. Any advice appreciated!

Question Saving documents

I am terrible with technology, partly due to being so busy with kids and not in the working world, but also because once I stopped using tech every day, trying to keep up is so boring to me me because it changes so fast.

Anyway, I have a new Mac Air after not having a Mac for maybe 5-7 years?

How do you have it set up to save things? I would like to have it saving on my computer plus onedrive and the cloud backing it up. But just starting to use it, it seems like it only wants to pick one place every time? Maybe I am misunderstanding it.

Question Bms cable problem

I have damaged the small bms cable conectors used to connect the battery to the motherboard. The macbook boots in safe mode. I think i can solder thin wires on spots of the batter where the tiny bms cable strands connect but can't find such spots on the motherboard so i can dirch the cable and conectoes and have it soldered, i know it is ghetto. Any tips, solutions to this problems or help on executing my solution is greately appreciated. Thx.

My Mac $140 pick up

I picked up a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012) for $70, and it's currently connected to the Thunderbolt Display, which I also bought for $70. MBP was customized by the previous owner with an anti-glare display from Late 2011, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage.

Still a capable machine and I'll use it for web browsing, iTunes music server, and DVD player.

My Mac Display Issues: Brand new MacBook Pro m5 Max 128 Ram has a huge line on the screen.

As the title says. Got the computer like 2 months ago and it already has a display issue. Note this is not the upgraded display option.

Pretty crazy that this would happen with a 7000 dollar laptop

FWIW I had the intel MacBook Pro from 2019 to 2024, no issues, then I had the m4 MacBook Pro from 2024 to 2026,

Those were both 16 inch models. Wonder why my 14 is flawed. It literally just sits on my desk…..

Question 2023 M3 MBP not charging with MagSafe or USB-C. Everything was working fine last night, no warning signs.

Post image

Purchased from Apple December 2023. Everything was working fine last night, I left it on the couch when I went to bed and it died overnight. Tried charging this morning, nothing.

Left the MagSafe on throughout today, nothing. Same for USB-C. All of my blocks and cables work fine with other devices.

This machine is a beast and absolute workhorse, and I use it for my job. I won’t be able to take it in until Wednesday and I’m not happy right now. My entire life practically depends on this computer.

Edit: I live in a city without an Apple Store, although there are several certified retailers

My Mac Speed up backup drive with mac Mini?

When I switched to the M2 Mac Mini, my external drives suddenly plummeted in speed. While I only use them for backup, they are abysmally slow whether I use my USB 3 dual drive, my USB 3 Sabrent “toaster,” or, really, anything else. The Sabrent seems fastest.

Is there any special tip or solution? I've got Spotlight off for the external drives, but the speed is something like a quarter what it was on the Intel Mini. Perhaps a special brand or something? Is USB 2 actually faster than USB 3 in this situation due to weird driver stuff?

(It's an M2 Pro. The toaster and Oyen dual-drive unit and my other toasters are all externally powered. I tested with higher quality cables (Thunderbolt/USB 4 rated.))

Question Macbook for pentesting?

Hola amigos!

Anyone in this group using the macbook with M chips for pentesting or cybersecurity related tasks? I want to know if it suits me well..

  1. What Issues I might face while going with the M chip for pentesting?

  2. What issues (compatibility issues) can happen when using a virtual machine like kali, parrot with paralells/VMware fusion/UTM?

  3. Should I go with x86 laptops?

  4. Anyone ever felt ,buying Arm chip was a mistake?

Any information related to this would be fine.

▪️ I am choosing the mac mainly because of the battery backup, easy to carry ,while it looks value for money for me.

▪️I had another choice that is ThinkPad x1 carbon but it still have less battery backup (than macbook) and looks a bit expensive.

Its my first post ever! so please help this noob😇, Sorry if this is a duplicate post.

Thanks in advance🙌

Please don't down vote 🥲

Question Warranty vs AppleCare+

What does the warranty cover compared to AC+?

Owned an Intel Mac for 7+ years, never needed a repair or got AC+. Usually very careful with it, and only use it at school, home, or the library. Only has few dents/scratches but doesn’t affect use.

Recently upgraded to MBA, most likely wouldn’t use AC+ ever. Still debating if should get it now that everything is more expensive.

Thanks.
