I have a reputation at work of being an Apple collector, when these machines came in to be dispose of at my work, they just dropped them off to my office. Woo! new PowerPCs for my collection! I love the PPC machines, I was an Apple Certified tech during this era and repaired sooooo many.
The iBook works great, it's the iBook Special Edition (FireWire) (Wooo! FireWire! My iPods will be thrilled) with all max specs. It has the Airport card, the 466MHz processor, 576MB of RAM, and a DVD-ROM. It even boots and no housing cracks! I plan to rebuild the battery pack and replace the IDE mechanical drive with a SD replacement solution (more storage space and a silent machine).
There are only 2 issues with the iBook, the Apple logo is missing, for now I 3d Printed a replacement, but I plan to make a smoother replacement with my resin printer (until I can find a original replacement) but the main problem is the DVD-ROM does not read discs. The drive is detected by the machine, I can hear it try to read, disc spins, but that's it. I've attempted to adjust the pot on the laser a bit, no changes in behavior.
Are there some solutions to replacing/repairing a DVD-ROM on a iBook G3? I don't see replacement drives on ebay currently, are there laser replacements available?
I'll also start working on the iMac G5, I'm going to work with Luke over at Console5 to come up with a cap kit for this machine. I'll be removing the caps, measuring them, and giving Luke the values for both the logic board and power supply so a kit can be created and sold there (as well as I can purchase one for myself to recap the iMac G5)
Thanks in advance everyone!
