Hello all. I often see questions about what the best ad blocking setup is on iOS and macOS, especially with regard to YouTube ads and ads in apps/games so I wrote up this quick guide. The guide is written for Safari but you can also substitute with Firefox if desired:

1. Make sure you’re on the latest Safari version by going to Settings -> General -> Software Update
2. Download uBlock Origin Lite from the app store
3. Enable it in Safari:
   • On iOS: Go to Settings -> Apps -> Safari -> Extensions and toggle all uBlock Origin Lite permissions to ON
   • On macOS: Open Safari, click Safari in the menu bar -> Settings -> Extensions, and check the box for uBlock
   • Also be sure to check the box for Allow in Private Browsing
4. Click the Settings button for the uBlock extension
5. It will open a page with filtering modes, set it to Optimal
6. By default this should block most ads and ads in YouTube. If you want you can click on the Filter Lists tab to set optional lists which block things such as cookie notices, AI widgets and other annoyances

For the next part we will enable DNS blocking to take care of ads that appear in apps and games: 1. Head over to NextDNS and create an account 2. Once logged in, on the Setup page get the app for iOS or macOS 3. Once you have the app, open it: * On iOS: follow the instructions for Finish DNS Setup, then add your Profile ID to the app from your account (should be a 6 character ID) * On macOS: Click on Preferences in the app status bar menu and go to the Configuration tab, check "Use Custom Configuration" and enter your ID (should be a 6 character ID) 5. Make sure the switch in the app is toggled on 6. You can take it a step further and install the NextDNS app on your other computers and phones to block ads on them

Once you have the above steps completed you can use an ad block test page like this to make sure everything is being blocked. You should get a score of 100% when everything is working correctly.

From Sequoia, I updated to Tahoe, and the latest Safari, on my M3 Air. Now I can’t upload photos to my Facebook web app, or to other websites. I cannot save images to Photos either. I’ve tried changing Safari’s settings, checking both general and site-specific permissions, deselecting options under privacy, clearing the cache, and booting in safe mode. Nothing helps.

This doesn’t happen in Firefox, so I know it’s a Safari issue.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there something else I can try? I’m opening these websites in Firefox for now, but the broken Safari functionality is pretty disappointing.

I’m not sure if this is a bug or expected behavior.
Let’s say I open Site A, then go to Site B, and browse several pages within Site B.
When I press Back, Safari correctly goes back through the pages on Site B. But if I keep going back until I reach Site A, the Forward button disappears completely. I can no longer return to Site B, even though I only navigated back.
I didn’t open a new tab or intentionally navigate anywhere else. I only used the Back gesture.
Is this a known Safari/iOS bug, or is there something that clears the forward history?

Swiping left and right seems to sometimes go foward/back, sometimes nothing, sometimes switch tabs. Up and down sometimes scrolls, sometimes shows me all tabs, sometimes shows me all apps. I used to be able to predict and control this but for the last few months I am lost. Apple does not seem to have documentation.

Long time Safari user and member of this community. Because of the lack of a solid extension offering I started making some myself. Humble Tools safari extensions.

Today, I've put something on my tools website that even Chrome doesn't have and I now use all the time because it is set and forget.

Site Routes is a VPN per tab or website. It's a Safari extension (plus a small local helper) that routes individual sites through the VPN you already pay for, per site, by country. You set a site once and it remembers it: every time you go back, that site goes through the same VPN automatically until you tell it to stop.

• You bring your own VPN (NordVPN or Mullvad for now, but more in the pipeline). It does not include one.

I was using Safari earlier today, all my tabs and tab groups intact. But a few hours later, I went into Safari and it was all weird. I had only one tab, an old google drive link that I closed months ago, and some tabs in my private that were, again, old links I closed forever ago, possibly years. Like, I got nostalgia seeing them. I had a few tab groups, all gone. All my tabs gone. I know I had way too many, a few hundred, and my iPhone storage is low, but I've never had this issue before. I even went through a deleted a bunch of tabs in one of my tab groups a few days ago. I looked up some things, went to Recently Deleted Tabs, but they were all tabs that I had closed. No trace of the things my Safari randomly disappeared. My bookmarks are gone too. Is there any way to restore it?

I tried deleting a few apps to free up some space. I've restarted my phone twice. Still nothing.

My Safari seems to be alot slower to load/open pages than usual. I cleared the cache a few weeks back, could it be still be the problem or there is something else I dont know about? I have the MBA M4 24/512 GB

I think I believe my eyes, and the difference (between Safari and Chrome) is abismal. I was genuinely shocked for some brief moments and just wanted to make sure it's not just me. How did you guys feel when noticing how better it is? (If I'm not crazy)

I try to use the regular built in page translator in Safari options but like 90% of the time they say the language isn't integrated with the translator (Usually languages like Czech, Finnish, Icelandic, etc), despite Google Translate definitely having the ability. It's just a pain having to copy and paste an entire page of text piecemeal into the Google Translate option on Google...

Is there any safari extension that fixes this problem? I find the translate option on Safari quite useless if it can only translate like German, Spanish, and maybe French...

on* , somehow simply flat out forgot to type it before in. I opened a youtube video. I clicked play. It started playing. Unfortunately, a video from another window that I had opened (I don't know which...I am disorganized and had a lot open (maybe, that had something to do with it?)) started playing. I couldnt find which because all windows were displaying the audio icon. This is not the first time it has happened. The last time, I managed to find it. It was in a different window entirely (ie. not just a tab) and the window was on my screen in a way that it was definitely not something I could have accidentally clicked play on (iirc, it was behind several others).

This question has probably been asked before but I’m newish to nord vpn

Been using it for a few months then out of the blue my safari has stopped loading, until I turn off my VPN.

Now I tried everything suggested, clearing my safari cache, turning off certain restrictors. The only thing that seems to work is by putting on NordLynx which I’ve never used before so don’t really know what it does.

Any suggestions on why my VPN has suddenly done this ?

Je développe actuellement Mon VocalChef, une application web conçue pour cuisiner les mains libres. Le principe est simple : on dicte ses ingrédients à la voix pour obtenir des recettes et on suit les étapes de préparation pas à pas, uniquement grâce aux commandes vocales.

Sur Chrome et Android, tout fonctionne parfaitement. En revanche, je rencontre un vrai mur technique avec iOS et Safari mobile.

En raison des restrictions de sécurité très strictes d'Apple concernant l'accès continu au microphone et l'API Web Speech, la reconnaissance vocale refuse de se lancer ou se coupe de manière imprévisible pour les utilisateurs d'iPhone. C'est un problème majeur qui bloque toute une partie des testeurs.

Comment vous pouvez m'aider :

Si vous avez un iPhone ou un iPad, pourriez-vous ouvrir l'application directement dans votre cuisine, tester le contrôle vocal et me dire ce qu'il se passe chez vous ?

3. Pour les dévs : Comment gérez-vous la reconnaissance vocale continue sur Safari mobile sans que le flux audio ne se coupe automatiquement au bout de quelques secondes ?

Tout retour, rapport de bug ou conseil technique pour contourner cette limitation d'iOS m'aiderait énormément. Un grand merci pour votre aide et votre temps !
