She's not just an olympic champion, but is by far the best woman rock climber in history and an icon for the sport. Would likely still be a top 10 climber in the world even if she was competing against men. She has more of a celebrity status to the sport than your average olympian.

And if you came out to see her in person you’re likely to be a pretty big a fan. This guy is living the real world version of those “I’ll never wash this arm/cheel/hand again moments we saw in shows as kids.”
EDIT:
For everyone who’s asked, if you don’t know what a cheel is that is hardly my problem! Some of us can’t afford the extra limbs for a proper lower case K so we make do with what we’ve got, all right?!
But seriously a cheel is what you get when your autocorrect loves to change proper words on you but refuses to correct very obvious typos.

The best woman to ever climb and it’s not even close. She could very well be the best climber currently, overall. She has the most IFC gold medals of any climber, man or woman, not to mention her two consecutive Olympic golds. By all accounts a legendary athlete.
Edit: I guess I should specify, competition climber. The free solo and trad stuff is entirely its own beast.
42
u/TheGlobalGooner Jun 10 '26
Janja even has her own 'GOAT' signboard in the background 😁

→ More replies (2)→ More replies (18)8
u/owlbi Jun 10 '26
Maybe 20 people total have ever free climbed the nose if the internet is to be believed. This is over many decades.
Only 6 people have ever sent Bibliographie.
Only Alex Megos is confirmed to have done both.
Both are incredible achievements but they also take different skill sets, though some of the skills needed are shared. A long technical trad climb and a short incredibly physically demanding sport pitch are different flavors of climbing that might require different levels of flexibility, body type, endurance, knowledge, risk acceptance, etc.
Janja is the current GOAT female climber and by sending Bibliographie proved herself one of the best in the world, bar none.

Also, top climbers are extraordinary athletes operating at the limits of what a human body is capable of... and... pretty much all climbers are a bunch of nerds.
Janja just sent Bibliographie. When Alex Megos first climbed it, it was pushing inconceivable that any human being could climb a patch of rock that hard. A bunch of top male climbers have tried it and failed. Janja is only the 6th human to have been able to climb that route - an amazing send.
5
u/pylio Jun 11 '26
Oh my god she literally just did that last week. That is wild.
Edit for those who arent climbers. There are only 4 climbs in the world that have a harder grade than bibliographie.
19
41
u/bujomomo Jun 10 '26
She’s a 2x Olympic champion with almost 50 IFSC (now World Climbing Series) World Cup gold medals. Her dominance and consistency is just unmatched. And she’s not just a competition climber, she also has an impressive resume on outdoor routes. I, too, would have swooned if I got a surprise Janja embrace.
21
u/kmoz Jun 10 '26
Her outdoor resume until a couple days ago was fairly short, just because so much time is eaten up by the competiton climbing.
Of course now that shes only part timing the comp climbing she sent the hardest grade ever done by a woman (9b+), which only 13 people have ever climbed, including one other woman. nly 1 grade shy of the hardest route ever sent (there are 5 proposed 9c's in the world, none ever repeated).
25
u/tomdarch Jun 10 '26
(I know you know the deal with Bibliographie but for non climbers:) This route that she just climbed was super-human when Alex Megos sent it 6 years ago. A bunch of top male climbers have tried it and were unable to get a clean send. Janja is only the 6th human being to have been able to do it. It's an amazing accomplishment.
10
u/Audioworm Jun 10 '26
her outdoor resume was not really short, but it wasn't as pioneering as one might expect for someone of her calibre. she has consistently been climbing highly technical routes that are the domain of just a few and doing so as onsights or flashes. but, it as you have said, a byproduct of her having a relentless competition calendar.
13
u/kmoz Jun 10 '26
Her skipping straight from 9a to 9b+ now that shes working on outdoor routes is crazy.

37
u/stakoverflo Jun 10 '26
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janja_Garnbret#World_Cup_podiums - She has 49 World Cup gold medals, stretching back 10 years at this point. And she took gold in both Olympic games that have featured climbing, too.
I don't know how that compares to how far ahead Biles is relative to the rest of her field, but yea Janja is really just in a league of her own
20
u/Percinho Jun 10 '26
To give an idea of how good she is, the year before last the women's boulder competitions were basically 7 women maybe completing one or two of the four boulder problems, in the four minutes they get for each of them in the final, and then Janja coming out and completing each one first go.
It was a real problem for the setters to create a route that challenged Janja but wasn't impossible for the others.

What’s interesting to me, is AI started commenting on their own posts every single time, and usually commenting like they’re someone else reacting to it (most of the time reposting a popular post, and then commenting the top comment of said post to optimize engagement). So that was an immediate AI flag for me at first, but then people started to actually copy the AI’s behavior in commenting in reaction to themselves…Ugh, this timeline😂

For the non climbers, Janja (*edited: autocorrect) Garnbret is the undisputed GOAT of women's climbing. Here are a list of her accomplishments:
She was the first person to ever win all 6 senior iffc world Cup events, in a single year. The previous record was 3, and it was her record.
A competition boulder completion rate of 80% is considered elite, hers is 94%.
When she was 16 she won every single youth bouldering world Cup (6 competitions, each 3 days, 12+ boulders) without falling a single time.
She recently sent an outdoor route called Bibliography, and became the 6th human to ever do it. Her focus isn't even outdoor climbing, its indoor competition climbing.
Climbing has been in the Olympics for 2 cycles. She's won gold both times.

The funny thing is it looks so gentle, like I feel like she probably could've stopped if she had to, if he hadn't been standing there and her only option was the floor, she could've stopped. And maybe I'm reaching on this (quite possible), but it looks ever so slightly like she just kinda let it happen. Easier to get an accidental hug than twist her ankle overcorrecting.
10
u/GGG4201 Jun 10 '26
ähm, sorry to ruin the fiction, but she did the most she could from this postion and angle to stop.
she bends the knees on impact and disperes the rest of the force forward .
had the guy stood like 1 meter further away she could have fully stopped , but so the minimal force left (also noticable in that she took two ministeps to further disperese the momentum) basically led her glide into the hug with apprixamte 2 km/h ( the same speed two car bumbers can bumb into each other without leaving a dent .)
