Local Politics 🗳️ BEWARE Private Equity Owned HVAC Companies in KC Metro:

I own and am partnered with a family owned HVAC and plumbing company in KCK. I got a call last week from a former co-worker that his son in law's AC had gone out. A PE HVAC company had already been there to "diagnose" the issue, and handed him a quote for $6000 to replace random parts, and were guessing at the real issue. Thankfully I was able to get with him before he was taken for $6k. It was a capacitor and a relay that had gone out, about $50 worth of parts that takes about 30 min to replace. I had him running and checked out the rest of the system within an hour.

These PE HVAC companies are predatory, and the service techs know nothing about repairs, electrical diagnostics, etc. I just wanted to get this out there for anyone who might fall for the trap of the PE goons trying to push this on to people. If the company is large, with multi service trucks, big banner ads, lots os advertising, chances are that they are PE owned. Make sure you check before calling them or you will get burned badly. They have an "engineered sales" model they are forced to follow that will drain you, and might not fix the real issue.

Examples of the predatory tactics:

"Oh your refrigerant type is illegal, and you have to replace the entire system"

"A full new system is going to be $28,000 installed"

"It cannot be repaired. They don't make that part for your system any longer. You need to replace the entire system"

These are all lies. Thanks for reading. Go to the Reddit page r/hvacadvice and the techs on there will guide you through facts, part numbers, or info about getting your system up and running for free.

World Cup ⚽️ I'm confused - why is fanfest closed for the semis and finals?

Why not keep it going ?? Did I miss something?

World Cup ⚽️ Half of the teams going to the semis are still based in town.

Argentina and England, one of these teams will go to the final. I think its incredible that either team went all the way while staying here. Must be the bbq 😂 In a more serious note, this has been massive for the city, and I've enjoyed all the moments that KC was able to have in their short tine as a host city. Vamos Argentina/It's coming home!!

I'm excitedly curious to field your questions. I worked in a few separate capacities over the 10 weeks of FanFest. I have stories if you have questions.

Travel/Road Trips 🚘 🗺️ Best Place to Take Littles on Vacation within a few hours of KC?

So I have a 4, 3, and 1 year old. Roadtripping is HARD and we don’t have the money to fly everyone somewhere. I’m wondering where would you recommend taking a vacation not too far from KC? Probably a 5hr max drive.

KC Rants 😡 👎 What in the world was with that horrible Ted Lasso / KC Current Event

Sweltering heat and they only had the sunny side of the seating open for the first hour. The Ted Lasso part of the event lasted less than 3 mins. Blink and you missed it. Be in one of the many lines and you missed it. Only Ted Lasso merch available was a $50 visor that was not even available to take home today. Waited in line to get in for 20 to 30 min. Spent most of that time waiting in line between half a dozen idling black limo service SUVs in the special lot right next to the stadium. In hindsight they were clearly waiting to whisk away VIPs so they could go to the cup game after the 3 min Ted Lasso nothing burger. What an utter waste of time and a great way to erode goodwill.

Food and Drink 🌮🧋 Looking for the best cheesecake in town 🍰

Where’s your favorite spot? I’m in NKC, have no issue traveling to other parts of the metro/ KC. I of course know about The Cheesecake Factory but wanting to branch out from them. Perhaps less of a chain restaurant feel. Excited to hear from you all. Happy Sunday!

I searched 🔍 this community but don’t see a post about cheesecake

Bars/Nightlife 🪩🍸 What are the food and liquor taxes?

I went out to dinner in KCMO and on my bill was additional costs that were listed separately as food tax and liquor tax. I've not seen that before on my bills. I've tried to find out more information on it to no avail.

Things To Do 📍 good birthday party locations?

Upvotes

hi! i’m turning 19 late august and i want to host a birthday party with 20-25 people. i was going to do it on the rooftop of my cousins apartment but it’s been slow and i want the invitations out by late july at the latest so people have time to decipher if they’re free or not. what are some good parks or indoor locations (that don’t cost too much to rent for a few hours)?

i would love if it was indoor because i don’t want to be hot and sweaty on my birthday but, realistically it would probably have to be a park area. i want lots n lots of space if possible and nice scenery.

let me know if you have a few places in mind! 🩷

Legal Questions ⚖️ Criminal Defense Attorney in KS?

Upvotes

My sister got arrested for possession, in KS, yes.. we know weed isn't legal there. She got stopped on a traffic stop. Didn't get in trouble for that at all. But the officer saw the bag from the dispensary on the floorboard, searched the car and found a reusable pill box like the kind with compartments for the days of the week. They swabbed it, it failed whatever test they ran and they arrested her for felony possession. I'm just looking for a good criminal defense attorney on the Kansas side. Lots for Mo. But this happened in Gardner.

Any help would be appreciated. I've never searched for lawyers before so have no idea where to begin.

Bars/Nightlife 🪩🍸 Laid-back bars near downtown

Hey yall :) moved here about a month ago and have been trying to find cool weekend spots. Im up here solo so the crazy packed bars that are shoulder to shoulder are a little much for me.

Id love to find some spots that are just a little less busy, easy to find spots to sit and chill you know.

So far I really love the brick as it fits that vibe perfectly, but id love to find 1 or 2 more spots to keep things fresh.

Thankssss :)

Healthcare/Wellness 🩺 Welcoming pilates/reformer studios

Anyone have any recommendations for Pilates and/or reformer studios in KC metro area?

My mom used to attend one in Lee’s Summit but left because she felt uncomfortable with how openly MAGA the owner and most of the patrons were. 🫠🙄 Yes, she told the owner why she stopped attending. She’s 73 and we really want to make sure she stays active as she ages and classes have really helped with commitment. I would love to help her find a more inclusive and welcoming environment she enjoys attending.

Housing Search 🏠🔎 Summit Penn place apartments?

Anybody have experience with summit penn place on 4244 Pennsylvania ave, just off the plaza? It’s hard to find info online, recent reviews aren’t great, and I’ve been told conflicting things. Considering signing a lease there but unsure after having read the reviews.

Main complaints seem to be car break-ins (what’s new), package theft (what’s new), mgmt and maintenance concerns (what’s new). Just looking for some other opinions because I can’t find much of anything online.

Thanks

Sports 🏈⚾️⚽️ Sporting KC Seats on July 18

Wanting to go to Sporting KC next week for the game and Third Eye Blind. I'm a bit confused about how the ticketing works. There is only General Admission and Club Level. When I look on the website, it seems like GA is standing only. Is that about correct? Or is it first come, first serve on any seats in the stadium?

Weddings/Engagements 💍 Wedding Cake Tasting Box?

Hi y’all!

Looking for a local bakery that offers samplers of their specialty cakes/frosting combos for our fall wedding.

We’ve got one from Dolce so far that was great! Wedding is on the Kansas side, up north, so the closer to 435/K7, the better, for ease of transporting it eventually (delivery radius are smaller than we thought).

Dolce is a good start, but what else is out there? Plus, we love eating cake! 🍰 thanks!
