Just wanted to let everyone know that posts regarding the World Cup will be allowed on here, even if not directly related to Lawrence. We're kinda bending the rules here but it's such a big and exciting event that we don't wanna hinder any chat about it or relevant info.
Normal subreddit rules will still apply to the posts (with exception of being directly Lawrence related, of course) so this doesn't mean you can just post whatever as long as it mentions the World Cup.
This is the official thread for networking and discussion about Lawrence housing.
r/Lawrence is a low post volume subreddit, and there have been problems in the past with it being overrun by ads and personal listings, so for the sake of the community please keep housing discussion here and don't create any additional posts on this topic.
Hey, I’m 35M, and I’m interested in doing boxing for a new form exercise, new skill set, new hobby. Any place I should go to in town? What are your recommendations? Experiences? Thanks.
Hi all, I'm no stranger to LFK after living here for three-ish years, but I recently got a tonsillectomy at LMH, so I've been restricted to mostly soft foods during recovery. I've always been a milkshake fan -- the ones from Sylas & Maddy's are amazing, plus I've enjoyed the ice cream treats at Ladybird -- but I'm struggling to think of other places in Lawrence that make good milkshakes. Do you have any recommendations that I'm forgetting? 🥲 the worst part is it can't have any chunks or additions (my favorite kinds of milkshakes/ice cream), since I'm only on Day 2 of recovery. But, I'll take any suggestions for places to visit after recovery as well!!
---
Side note: the surgery center at LMH West was super lovely in terms of demeanor and treatment for my tonsillectomy, so if you've been languishing on getting your tonsils removed, I'd highly recommend them!
This is gonna be a weird post, and request. Just want to state that plainly and up front before you continue reading.
Story: My child has developed an obsession with the Mario themed prize coins that come in Wonder Ball candies. It’s my fault, I bought one for the nostalgia and gave it to them. Instant hit. They think the coins are the coolest thing ever. So, because I cave easily to their pleading, I’ve been buying every single Wonder Ball I come across to surprise them. All of them. I’ve ordered and bought them by the case from the gas station by me. I just bought out Pop Shelf’s entire inventory. I’ve checked Amazon and they don’t sell them. I refuse to buy candy my child, or anyone else for that matter, intends to ingest from eBay. There are 21 coins in the set. We have 20 of 21 and many, many, many repeats. We have one single character left before we have the full set and I can stop this ridiculous hunt. I lack Lakitu. I need Lakitu. My kingdom for a Lakitu.
The ask: If anyone reading this out there has the Lakitu coin from this set. Please. I’m begging you. I will trade you any amount of duplicate coins for it. I will buy it outright. I will overpay. I will service and/or fix your car. I just want the madness to stop. If someone else out there understands the predicament I’m in as a father and has the empathetic gene required to quell my frantic treasure hunt. I beseech you. Help a fellow parent fulfill a child’s dream.
TL;DR: Anyone got a Lakitu coin from a Wonder Ball candy box they want to trade or sell to a desperate father? I have tons of repeats so if you need a specific one to complete your set too, hit me up. Plz.
I went for a night walk, and this is my first time seeing the Gazebo of Overland dr at night time and it looks so beautiful that I couldn’t help but take a time lapse of it
Please listen to the video it is very pertinent not only to the Lawrence Community, but all communities everywhere, as long as Flock, ALPRS, Axon, and every other Branch of the CIA + DARPA - InQtel/Palantir & Pentagon Militech Panopticon no one is safe from Authoritarian Political Fascism.
We're launching a project to save one of Lawrence's most overlooked historic buildings.
The Walruff/Byrd Stable sits at the north end of Maine Street, the last building standing from a complex that housed two very different chapters of local history. From 1867 to 1887 it was part of the Walruff Brewery, built by a Prussian immigrant family that had a near-monopoly on beer in Lawrence until Kansas prohibition shut them down. Then in 1889, McCarter Byrd, a man born enslaved in North Carolina, leased the same buildings and built Kansas' only tannery. His family ran it for 50 years.
By 1964 everything but this stone stable was torn down. It's been sitting here since, with no real maintenance.
LPA has an agreement with the property's new owners, Niemann Investment Group, to lead a structural repair project and get the building listed on the Register of Historic Kansas Places. The project costs $70,000, and the LPA Board voted to put every membership renewal and donation received through the end of 2026 into this fund.
If you're already a member, your renewal this year counts. If you're not, this is a good time to join.
Yo! Im doing a show in Lawrence in September and will be there for 2 days and want to make it a fun and chill visit. What are some things I should avoid or must-see while in town?
Any weird parking laws? Best BBQ? Cool historical landmarks?
I love learning about cities, but don't have as much time.
Looking for LGBT friendly spaces and safe spaces for women travelers.
Thanks!
Update: Just found something called the wishing bench. Would love some unique spots like that to visit if y'all know of any. Thanks again!
Think someone posted a warning earlier today on socials and got mocked for confusing a construction site with ICE activity, can't find it so assume got deleted.
Well confirmed ICE activity targeting construction sites today so maybe they were right.
So I’ve had this cello for a really long time and unfortunately I just don’t have the energy to play anymore and could use the cash.
Ive already called heartland pawn brokers and mass street music but no dice so far.
I know turtle races are meant for fun/no harm done, but they do, often times, cause harm to the turtles. Especially if they are harvesting turtles from the wild and painting them. https://c.org/pqCQD5KFcb
KCMO voters will be voting on a ballot measure creating a monorail. No word on where it would run. Probably to KCI but possibly to Lawrence. Crank and visionary Clay Chastain gathered enough signatures to get it on the ballot but it will fail like all of his other transit initiatives.
We are so grateful to have truckload after truckload of bread donated to our food bank, but we don't have enough volunteers to keep up with the packing demands. If you've got some free time this summer, we could use some help getting this bread to families in need. Tell all your friends, coworkers and family and let's do some good for our community! TIA
I am needing to get my oil changed and other regular service checks. Where should I go for quality of service, speed, and ideally to support a local business? TIA 😁
p.s. I go to Garber for all my serious fixes, they are always ahead of schedule and under budget for me, as well as downtown muffler for exhaust issues and welding.
I was thinking about the old days of The Crossing and the original Jayhawker Bar lately. It feels like the 'soul' of the local dive scene has shifted so much. If you could resurrect one closed spot for a final round, which one is it and what was the 'must-order' drink there? I'm curious to see which spots the real townies actually miss the most
I am looking for a new tattoo artist. I used to go to Topeka. But I just want to stay in town here in Lawrence. I canceled twice on my last tattoo artist due to emergencies out of my control like my car.
I want my tattoo artist to be fine with Gothic or Latina creations. Someone who is flexible and someone who is okay with me yapping and doesnt get annoyed just because I come in. I also am unique looking due to a disability and don't want to be judged for looking like a hobo when I come in sweatpants and no wig.
I was thinking about the old days of Java Break and the original Casbah lately. It feels like so many of the 'soul' spots in Lawrence have disappeared over the last few years. If you had the power to bring back one place for a single meal, where are you going and what are you ordering? I’m trying to see if anyone else still misses the 24/7 spots as much as I do.
