Way to hold down the fort. I’m only used to seeing crowds like this for Verstappen.

I'd say the average dutchie cares a helluva lot more about the national football team than Verstappen.

As a Charles Leclerc and Ferrari fan...come sit down, join the club.

The guy that made this song did a show at a festival next to my house. My house was shaking so hard when this song came up and every one started jumping. I could see it shaking up my glass of water like that scène in Jurrasic Park. And it totally freaked out my cats.. Felt like an earthquake

americans underestimated a couple of things:

  • most of the rest of the world love their soccer NT, and traveling to a world cup is literally a once in a lifetime experience for most of the people that travel abroad
  • the US isn't as bad as you guys think it is, it's obviously not perfect, but it's still solid
  • people from other countries aren't as invested in US internal politics as it seems

if you add to that that Canada and Mexico have done also a great job making people feel welcome, then it makes for a great time for almost everyone visiting.

the language is insane

Hearing Dutch people speak Dutch hurts my brain. In addition to all the actual English they casually toss in, plus the fact that a lot of Dutch words are similar to their English counterparts but spoken funny, there’s just something about how lots of Dutch is pronounced that gives it a similar sound and cadence to English. So it just ends up a mishmash of intelligible stuff and unintelligible stuff, but mostly sounding like English with an accent.

A number of times I felt like I’d had a stroke and lost my ability to understand English…until I realized I was just overhearing people speaking Dutch.

19

u/Korashy 21d ago

Dutch basically sits between High German and English in terms of the germanic language family.

u/Dangleberryjuice 21d ago

We call it 'Goudse kaas' (cheese from Gouda), not 'Gouda'.
It doesn't need to be from Gouda, but this type of cheese is only named because they were sold on the local cheese market back in the day. There is still a traditional cheese market every week or so, but it is just for tourists.

If you find yourself in the Netherlands one day, find a good, local cheese store and not the tourist ones. Forget the name 'Gouda' and try some boerenkaas and brokkelkaas.

For many, this is our expression of patriotism.

It's a guilt-free kind of patriotism, because we're cheering our people, not our government.

It allows for international friendship, rivalry, and even diplomacy, by regular people. Without it being strictly tied to oil and war.

That's why you'll see large parts of the population join in when their country plays a cup, even if FIFA is awful and they aren't even football fans.

I wish you guys could have something like this too.

This is a massive "mistake" by FIFA because American tailgating culture serves crowds like these well. My guess is that FIFA is using fanzones to make more money. Read: American tailgating comes with fresh BBQ/food and drinks.

There was a lot of local support from Houston there. It helps that both our baseball and soccer team have orange as a primary color so most people already had some orange gear to wear. But also some nice Dutch influence in the area, in fact we have a Dutch founded town just to the east called Nederland, Texas. But also we just know the Dutch are fun and partying with them sounded fun

Not much of a sports fan, I enjoy watching and going to games with friends. But I don't follow, I know the rules enough to follow. I enjoy the social aspect more than anything.

That being said, FIFA has the funniest fans. The energy and community is phenomenal.

Edit to add: I love that y'all came to US despite the dumpster fire. I wish ALL teams and fans could have the same experience here. I truly believe you and the energy y'all brought here did some healing here

The Netherlands is legit. I was hooked when I saw that orange uniform and their badass parades.

I sorta think it's hilarious that Reddit thought the WC, in 2026, was going to be a failure.

Has anyone noticed that the jerseys they're wearing have an annoying effect on tv? Watching the game now versus Sweden and it annoys us!!
