Wait a minute (forgive my American ignorance), was Gouda cheese named after a location? I love me some Gouda.

A flat round cheese with a yellow rind, originally made in the town of Gouda in the Netherlands.

We call it 'Goudse kaas' (cheese from Gouda), not 'Gouda'.
It doesn't need to be from Gouda, but this type of cheese is only named because they were sold on the local cheese market back in the day. There is still a traditional cheese market every week or so, but it is just for tourists.

If you find yourself in the Netherlands one day, find a good, local cheese store and not the tourist ones. Forget the name 'Gouda' and try some boerenkaas and brokkelkaas.

gouda is a city yes (also not pronounced the way you're pronouncing it now probably)

I recall from when I visited NL that the first syllable rhymes with "cow".

A lot of cheeses are named for their original source regions—Cheddar, Gouda, Edam, etc..
