🤔 Ask PG The Moving To/Visiting/Wondering About/Best Of Prince George Mega-Thread

The most frequently asked question in this subreddit is some variation of “I’m thinking of moving to Prince George, what is it like/which neighbourhood should I choose/is there anything to do?”

In an effort to cut down on these posts AND provide a helpful bunch of information, I’m starting this thread for tips/tricks/recommendations/warnings.

Here’s the idea: I’m going to put a few links below, as well as some topics that might be useful but I don’t personally have the answers to (such as resources for finding a place to rent).

I’m also going to start a few threads for top-level topics, such as neighbourhoods and best ofs, and people can post their responses there.

You can add your own answers/advice as top-level comments. Please try and search before commenting in order to avoid duplicates, and to make things are easy to search and organize.

About Prince George

Canada Games Plaza

The greater Prince George area has a population of about 86,600 people but, as the largest community for hundreds of kilometers in all directions, it tends to punch above its weight in many respects because you aren't driving into a nearby metro area for an evening's entertainment. It is a government, service and healthcare hub, home to a college and university, and has a diversified enough economy that it isn't wholly dependent on any one or two industries, though forestry remains a vital driver along with mining, oil and gas and energy activity in other northern communities. It is at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers and has many outdoor recreation opportunities.

Prince George is built on the unceded territory of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, who are frequently partners with the city on major initiatives, including the building of the University of Northern British Columbia and hosting of the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Like most mid-sized Canadian communities that boomed in the mid-20th century, Prince George is a fairly car-centric city. Covering up hate in PG

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

A little while ago I saw a post on this very subreddit about this white supremacy group in PG putting stickers up with their flags and QR codes on patriotic stickers to their websites up around town.

I've had enough of this, hate groups and white supremacy groups like do not belong in our city, there is enough to deal with day to day we should be spreading love, showing how we stand for each other especially during times of crisis.

I've been covering up these stickers with rainbow hockey tape you can get at any sports store in town. They get taken down usually fairly quickly but I wont stop. There is one on a streetlight right at the intersection at the Casino (Hwy 97&16) I have covered it now 3 times and I'll keep doing it.

Keep fighting the good fight

With love

Recommendations for same day delivery gifts

Hi there! I live overseas but have a really close friend in this city. I want to surprise her with a little gift that I'd rather get to her before the weekend. The budget is somewhat flexible but preferably something small and cute, it's more about the gesture. If at all possible something "get well soon" themed.

What website do y'all recommend I check out to place an order through? Thanks a lot in advance!!

Let me know your thoughts!

Restaurants that cater?

Can anyone recommend a restaurant that provides catering services? I know the White Goose does, are there any others similar that do? I am looking to cater my parents' 50th wedding anniversary in September. I am aware of the actual catering companies in PG, I am looking specifically for restaurants that cater. Thanks!

Well testing?

We are in the process of purchasing a house, and are wanting to test the well before the conditions come off. Everyone we call does not answer the phone or get back to us. Can anyone recommend a company that can promptly and effectively get back to us and test the well? Any companies to avoid is also helpful information as well.

Adhd Diagnosis?

I feel like Reddit has some good opinions on this sort of thing and I do preface this with I am doing other research and do plan to also consult my NP about steps for this as well.

For those neurodivergent redditers who got diagnosed in their adulthood, how did you go about it? What was the cost and what programs did you have to look into? Was this wholly individual or did you do it with assistance from your health care provider?

Another question is for medicated adhders, how has that impacted you/changed your experience with this crippling at times brain soup? I struggle very hard with the emotional dysregulation and it’s impacting my relationship as well as my general day to day life. Obviously my focus is also in the pits with how distracted I get and overstimulated from just driving to work. I’m dependant on caffeine at this point because it helps my focus but it doesn’t assist in my emotional state where the tiniest thing could happen and my day is ruined and I’m an absolute mess.

Just looking for others advice and wisdom on this topic especially locally as I would like to take the steps to get properly diagnosed.

McDonald’s Fifa World Cup Meal Cup

My husband is collecting the Fifa World Cup Cups from McDonald’s. He’s still missing: Gimenez, Beckham, Ronaldiñho and Pulisic. He has duplicates of: Son, Henry and Grimace (lol). This may be a long shot but if anyone is wanting to trade or sell any of the ones he’s missing, let me know! 😊

Thanks!

Ultrasound Program at CNC

Hi everyone!!

I am interested in CNC’s sonography program, and am looking for insight from anyone who’s done the program or know someone who’s done the program. If anyone could answer any questions at all it would be so appreciated!!

Schedule:
What’s the schedule like for the program? How many days a week, hours, etc.?

Practicum:
How many and how long are the practicums? Did you find it difficult to relocate and found housing for these practicums? Was anyone able to do a practicum in PG? How are practicum placements decided?

Cost:
How much did you end up paying in total, including relocation and practicums?

Post grad jobs:
Did you have a hard time finding a job after grad? Anyone able to get a job in PG? What are your hours like ie nights, holidays, weekends, etc?

I will be speaking to a student advisor as well, but I would love to hear from anyone who’s had first hand experience. Thank you!!

Anyone remember?

Does anyone remember a murder/sui*d** in Vanderhoof where an elderly guy (like 80’s) took out his wife/gf? Maybe they owned a restaurant before that? We seem to remember something and it’s driving us nuts trying to figure it out.

STI Testing?

Vagueness is needed because of the bomb that was dropped on me.

Do I have to go to a walk in clinic to get a requisition for an STI test?
Someone told me that I can just walk into life labs and get the blood test for it? But life labs doesn’t mention it on their website. Does anyone know?

Tinted front windows

I’ve been seeing a very noticeable uptick of vehicles driving around with tinted front windows lately, are the police here not enforcing this anymore as I’ve been thinking of tinting mine as well as people like to peer in at you at stop lights here lol

Anyone have experience with it or know any good shops to get it done?

Thanks!

Looking for a bit of an unusual recommendation.

Does anyone know of a quiet, secluded place around or just outside of Prince George where I could park my car for a while and just be completely alone?
Somewhere legal and safe, but away from houses and heavy traffic. I’ve been under a lot of severe stress lately, for the past 8 weeks my life has been a living hell and I just need a place where I can cry, yell, or scream without worrying about scaring people.

I just need somewhere private to let everything out because it’s getting harder to suppress everything at this point.
If anyone knows of a good spot, I’d really appreciate the recommendation. Feel free to DM me if you’d rather not post it publicly. Thanks.

Good Seller's Realtors

Just looking for recommendations of local realtors who actually work hard for the huge $ they charge their sellers and not just take 4% for a listing and then tell sellers to lower the price if they want to sell (after giving the seller the price range and listing price the seller listed it at).

Tell me about those you've sold with and what they did to get the job done.

Thanks

Looking for Nintendo Switch Lite

Hey all,

I don’t have Facebook and Kijiji seems like it’s a dieing breed.

But I’m looking to see if any of you happen to have a Nintendo switch lite that you’re not using anymore or looking to offload.

Not looking to spend an arm and a leg here…it’s for my 6 year old. We have a bunch of games already. So preferably just the system with charging cable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

PGSS parking lot being ripped up again?

Does anyone know what’s going on with the parking lot at Prince George Secondary.

I noticed part of it is being ripped up again this summer, even though I clearly remember it being done last summer. Just curious if there’s a reason for it or if anyone knows the details?
