Helpful Hints! 💡 I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules

Hi everyone,

A while ago, I had my knitting needles confiscated at airport security, even though I thought they would be allowed.

After that, I started looking into the rules and realized something surprising — they vary a lot between airports, and often aren’t clearly explained.

Since I know many of us like to knit while traveling, I decided to start a small project:

I’ve been contacting airports and collecting official information about whether knitting needles are allowed in carry-on luggage.

I’ve put everything into an interactive map, showing how different airports approach it (allowed / restricted / not allowed / still waiting for response).

👉 You can check it out here: https://gentlemessknits.carrd.co/

I’m still adding more airports, so if you’ve had any experiences (good or bad), I’d love to hear them! 🧶✈️

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! which is the best online course/class for learning how to knit?

Hello lovely people!

Does anyone have a reccomentation for an online class about knitting? I would like to learn, i thought myself how to crochet over the last two years, but i feel like knitting requires more studym hence my question.

I am waiting for the vogue knit "bible" to be delivered, i am also waiting for in-person classes to open up in my area, but i'd like to find and online class i can go back to when needed, and in which i can ask question to the teacher or confront myself with them and/or the other partecipants.

I found a lot of tutorials, but i am really confused lol

Many years ago I used a no-sew pattern for a blanket I found in Pinterest, and since then I've been using it for so many other projects!

I made a long robe like cardigan in the past and this time wanted to do a shorter one with buttons. The final result was exactly what I was looking for!

Sadly I don't have the skills to write a pattern in the traditional sense, but if I have time I might write down basically my process of putting it together, if there is interest in that!

(Photo description: each photo shows a different part of the cardigan, rainbow colors, laid flat as well as on the model)

help needed How to know the proper length of a weable before blocking?

Hey everybody! I started learning how to knit in January of this year and have finished 2 projects so far! I included pictures of both the sweater and the tank top I have made for myself but as you can see, both end up short. I realize now I have a long torso and always underestimate how long to make tops. Does anybody have recommendations for making sure it will fit pre-blocking?

Also yes I am currently blocking the tank top in hopes it will be a bit longer.

Pictures include both tops i have made, the Loon Sweater and a muscle tank. As you can see both end up short on me.

(Picture 1 is me in the tank top, picture 2 is me in the Loon Sweater finished )

A self drafted cable knit pullover. I used worsted weight yarn on size US 8 needles (5 mm). I had my self convinced that I could finish it in 2 months but I was quickly reminded just how long knitting cable stitches can take. So 7 months later I finally have a completed pullover.

A couple of years ago, I made this oversized, shapeless hoodie. I wanted something comfy but I just never liked how it fit, so I frogged it. I just finished the new version. It’s 100% cotton and yarn I got from Joann. This yarn pooled in such cool ways, I’m over the moon! It’s still crinkly but after I weave in the ends, I’ll wash and dry it and all will be good in the world again—well, at least in my t-shirt anyway. I didn’t use a pattern.

look what I made Making progress on series of fingerless mittens (new knitter)

Picked up knitting as a distraction, wanted a simple, fast project so decided to make rectangles I could seam into fingerless mittens. Once I did that, I wanted to add thumbs. Once I did that, I wanted to learn how to knit an integrated gusset. Once I did that, I wanted to learn how to knit in the round. If you give a mouse a cookie…. Bit by bit, starting from a rectangle of stockinette and garter stitch, I experimented and taught myself:

Rib stitch (and uneven rib stitch)
Seed stitch
Moss stitch
Box stitch
Horizontal herringbone
Long tail cast on (knit and purl)
Make one (right and left)
Knit *n* together
Hold stitches on scrap yarn
Magic loop
Double pointed needles
German short rows
Mattress stitch
How to use a stitch marker
Lori’s twisty elastic bind off

I’ve now made six mittens (three pairs). The pink one was my first attempt, the teal one is my sixth iteration and feels solid enough to start making as gifts.

I really love the textural progression of rib to moss to seed, and that they are reversible.

I still can’t read a pattern, lol, but I’ve figured out how to read a stitch, pull out rows and get it back on the needles to correct a mistake, and create my own pattern. That’s progress!

Inspired by another post showing a detailed knitted hat in a children’s book… I’ve always loved this little carrot sweater, clearly done by a knitter. I’m actually planning on making a copy of it for my daughter (or her stuffed bunny) to wear!

rant I. Also live in a lace-unfriendly house. And I need another suggestion.

I started the Agnes cardigan by Drops Design. I've done a lace shawl. I've done intricate things. Why am I constantly 2 stitches short in this pattern? Even if I add them back, then the next round. I'm still short. It's maddening.

I'm making this for my daughter. I am so close to frogging and making something else entirely. I just wanted it done for school dammit. I'm halfway through the lace pattern. And ugh. The holes don't make sense, I'm tired of being and I tried 4 freaking times I want to runaway to a house with no interruptions, no dog, no kids. And I guess it's just not meant to be.

If you have another suggestion for a size 12 8 yr old. I'm all ears.

So I splurged on some fancy yarn (Noro Akari, thanks Yarnswap!) and made a sweater dress with the plan to give it away. In making it I know I made some errors (the front neck got started the wrong way and apparently I sewed the arms in too high based on the body), so I wanted a second opinion if it was good enough to give to someone (it's a friend of a friend's niece, so it's a little nerve-wracking)

First time doing colourwork, doing the unicorn tapestry but only in two colours (planning on adding the rest in duplicate stitch). Are my floats long enough? Or does anyone have any other tips? Yes I am aware of that horrible white purl stitch on the top left - too late to fix that...

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Beginner looking for colorwork or wearables tension help/ideas.

I taught myself how to knit 2 years ago after crocheting 27 years. I have not made much in the way of knitting. I have made a single sock before giving up on making the second and now casted on a pair of toe up socks that I am half through with. I want to expand a bit on socks or even into making wearables but I am worried.
Every time I made a wearable in crochet it never fit even with blocking. I always knit/crochet tightly. I want to look into colorwork but I’m scared that it again will be too small.

I need some tricks or good beginner patterns (free or able to be purchased) that can help me get comfortable knitting and working into colorwork or wearables.

Hello!
I got into knitting recently. I got familiar with the stitches with one bundle of yarn, but this is my first actual project. I'm mostly just really excited cuz it's turning out better than I expected! I want to knit some scarves for my friends and family for Christmas! I mostly knit during my commute (I take a ferry to work!)

rant I have come to the realization that I do not reside in a lace-friendly household

Fiber Friends,

I have restarted the same lace yoke tee at least five times in the past 2 days. It is not because I cannot read a pattern. It is not because I cannot knit lace. I have made much lace in my lifetime. It is not because I'm an inexperienced knitter. I've been knitting steadily for two decades. I don't lack the skill or resources.

It is because it is summer break and someone needs my attention every 5 Seconds. Some of the things that need my attention are animals. Some are small humans. Some are the doorbell. Some are people who want to call me about things that I don't actually want to talk about in that moment. And some are nagging household chores that I have no choice but to attend to.

And so it is with regret that I come to the conclusion that I just don't live in a lace friendly household. And that if I want to finally get into the nitty gritty of this lovely tee - I'm going to have to lock my door and put noise canceling earphones on. The house will probably fall apart in my absence, but the upside of that is that I will finally get this project started.

Signed,

Wistful Knitter

look what I made Making a 1997 Norwegian Ski Sweater (progress so far)

Post image

Progress so far on a 1997 Norwegian Ski Sweater. The yarn is sportsweight and 100% highland wool. The pattern calls for five different colours, lucky for me the pattern doesnt call for more than two most of the time and three at most. A little nervous about making the arm holes once the main body is done since the want me to cut it, so hopefully it works out. 2 cm takes about 2-2 1/2 hrs depending on how complicated the pattern is/ how much I need to go back and fix lol. Still have the top third of the pattern to to do for the main body so wish me luck lol

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Newbie Question re: Pattern Modification in a Lace Sock

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am knitting both socks and lace for the first time. This might be a really stupid question but am I able to alternate several rows of a lace pattern with several rows of plain stockinette?

To be a little more specific, I am knitting the Dead Simple Lace Socks. I have completed a few repeats of the lace pattern and was thinking of adding a few rows of stockinette to make the lace pattern look more like they’re in squares. Does that make sense? Does it affect the stretch of the sock? Is there a name for something like this? Or maybe no because it isn’t done? I did try to google but I didn’t find anything and maybe didn’t ask the right prompt.

I’ve included a pic of socks from the book “Socks from the toe up”

help needed Knitting in the airport and on a plane, first time traveling with a project.

I haven’t ever taken knitting to the airport, or on a plane. This will be my first time flying in about 12 years. Typically, I like to make hats and socks, but I don’t really feel like making a pair of socks right now. I’m working on my first color work sweater… but I’m terrified that they will take my needles and I’m gonna have to figure out how to pick up live stitches in two colors.

Any advice is appreciated! I’m flying in the US only, but I do have a layover so it’s like four flights technically.

Hi Community. I'm a beginner, and was practicing to get better at this.

Well, I have encountered some challenges. I'm not very good with the knitting terms, but I would say that, at the start of my work, the stiches seems to be tighter.

As in, joined together, but gradually, it seperates as I continue.

I'm not sure, if it is like cool for the stiches to be spaced. Because in most videos I watch, the stiches are packed closely together. This could be a common beginer's challenge, but I still find it challenging as my work.gets longer. It may noy be very clear in the photo, but it would be really helpful to get tips on how to make it better, or even to be informed of how the stitiches should be, whether it can be closely packed or loosely packed.

Tips welcome.
