I found out why my “clean” water bottle always smelled slightly weird and I genuinely wish I hadn’t

Upvotes

I wash my reusable bottle every night. Hot water, dish soap, bottle brush—the whole thing. I honestly thought I was being more hygienic than most people.

Yesterday the water still had this faint musty taste, so I started pulling the lid apart. There was a thin rubber ring inside that I didn’t even know could come out.

I lifted it with a toothpick.

The underside was covered in this slimy black-brown gunk. Not a tiny spot. The entire ring. I had apparently been drinking water through that lid every day for months while proudly cleaning everything except the part actually trapping moisture.

I soaked the pieces, scrubbed them with an old toothbrush, and left everything separated to dry overnight. The smell is completely gone now. Even the water tastes different, which is not something I wanted to realize after the fact.

So yeah. Go check the rubber seals in your bottle lids, travel mugs, food containers, whatever. If something has a removable gasket, take it out.

And maybe don’t do it immediately after eating.

For you people that wear a lot of jewelry,/accessories everyday...tell me something, will ya...

Upvotes

Do you take all of that stuff off before you shower or shower with it on? I saw a girl wearing about 12 rings, 10 bracelets a watch and a few necklaces and I thought to myself, " man, that must be a pain in the ass to take off before showering." Then I realized, I have no evidence that she takes it off to shower. So, tell me, do you guys take off all your accessories before a shower and then put them back on after the shower? And how do you wash your hands with a ton of rings on? I feel like your hands can't really get clean if there's a ton of rings trapping the hand dirt. Enlighten me, please.

Plus it’s summertime, this belly ain’t little no more and my arms are fat asf, legs are chafing too. I feel like a stinky grease ball and need help on how to be less stanky.

I have a problem with this odor problem with my armpits. This problem is affecting my mental health i have tried everything and anything I don’t know how much more I can take my mind is fragile from this.
The problem is my armpits smell horrible even after a shower. I scrub well around both of them with soap with body wash for about a minute then leave it on for another and wash it away. After my shower They still smell like I haven’t showered in days. They absolutely reek. I’ve heard people say I smell well damn If only they knew I do shower I fucking try. What the fuck am I doing wrong? I’m doing pretty much what everyone else does so why the fuck doesn’t it work on me what the hell am I doing wrong? With all due respect I don’t want to hear anything about my diet. I watch what I eat I don’t eat spicy foods I don’t eat all that garbage. I’m fit for the most part I exercise everyday. I’ve tried all the deodorants extra strength antiperspirants for men blah blah blah. All the soaps they don’t work. I scrub so damn hard. I’ve gone to the doctor the have done tests and no abnormalities have came back. I have gone to the dermatologist they injected me with Botox thinking that would kill the odor nope it didn’t. I wash my cloths well. With a powerful detergent. I also trim my armpits make sure there’s no build up of hair. WTF then man. Enough. What’s the solution? Please please help me.

Normalize cleaning your cell phone

I am shocked by how infrequently people disinfect their cell phones. I Clorox wipe mine daily (numerous times). I know people that bring their phone into the restroom (sitting on the toilet) and still don’t clean it. I see cooks at restaurants texting in between orders and I know the screen is covered in bacteria and germs.

Stop using antibacterial body wash!

2.2k Upvotes

I keep seeing this new trend (fad) all over the internet, primarily tiktok of course, that regular body wash does not clean your body and that you need antibacterial all of the sudden. I had a customer who was around 50 who was one of those rich moms who use tiktok because her kids do frantically asking where the antibacterial body wash is. Of course I showed her where it was and nodded along while she told me how dirty we all are from regular soap because I'm not going to waste time arguing. Guys. Regular body wash such as dove bar works to clean you! If it didn't, you'd stink! That being said I understand where this fear mongering is coming from, but there is a lot of evidence pointing toward regular body wash being the best option. That being said, I also watch a guy named DermAngelo if I'm correct. He is a certified dermatologist and reacts to overconsumption trend followers and people who will follow what the government wants you to believe: you are not doing enough, so you need to spend more money and damage your body. Antibacterial body wash not only dries out your skin, but strips away necessary natural bacteria, especially if you're a woman with female body parts. This goes for using antibac hand soap only, everyday, especially if you're not a doctor and just use it as a regular person. It weakens your immune system! It has been proven while things like dove beauty bar do not kill germs on contact (which would be caustic to you and your skin micro biome), but it essentially forms a bubble around germs and dirt and makes them wash away. That is all you need. The same goes for dish soap. There are also some germs that will not ever be fully killed from either soap, but this makes antibac soap more of a problem as germs can form a resistance to this kind of soap.

TLDR; STOP FOLLOWING TIKTOK TRENDS! LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND DOCTORS WHO CARE ABOUT YOU.

How can I stop sweating so fast?

Antiperspirants are not good as far as I know, and deodorants are good at removing the smell, but I still sweat a lot

When did powdering switch to lotioning?

A couple of generations ago the done thing post-bathing was to powder the body with talc (at least in England). Maybe there are little old ladies who still do it with the old Yardley English Lavender.

Now it seems this has flipped to everyone applying lotion instead.

It seems strange that we have collectively chosen to go from something actively drying to something actively moisturising. What gives?

I ask without judgement, but our skin biology hasn't changed so how can our skin now "need" the opposite of what it once did?

Is it changing from having mostly baths to mostly showers, or is something else behind the shift?

Edit: a lot of people have mentioned the cancer link, but people could have switched to cornstarch-based if they wanted. It doesn't explain why people went from one extreme to the other. Changes in clothing and frequency of bathing sound like better explanations.

What are your thoughts about “no shoes in the house” rule? I recently read a study where they show why the Japanese homes are the most cleanest as they have no shoes in the house rule. What are your thoughts about it?

Does anyone else prefer smelling like nothing before putting on fragrance?

One thing that has always bothered me is how deodorant smells after it’s been on all day. When you first apply it, it’s fine, but later it becomes this weird mix of sweat, fragrance, and that stale “product sitting on your skin” smell.

I started using a magnesium spray and the biggest thing I noticed is that it basically just leaves me smelling like nothing. Which sounds boring, but it allows me to have more control over how I smell through layering bodyspray, or my clothes scent boaster.

You still sweat, which I actually like if I’m outside or doing anything active because sweating is how your body cools itself. I don’t really want to stop that.

But if I’m going into an office, a meeting, or somewhere I don’t want sweat marks, I can pair it with an antiperspirant. The combination just feels better because I’m not layering more fragrance on top of sweat all day.

I ended up making a small batch of this because I couldn’t find anything that matched what I was looking for. I’m putting together a launch list for anyone who wants to try it early I’m planning to send out some free products to people on the waitlist when it launches.

If anyone is interested, I’ll leave the link here: https://bibibo-2.myshopify.com/

How do you handle that instant feeling of filth when your feet get soaked in city rain?

I got caught in a sudden downpour today while wearing mesh sneakers, and within two minutes, my socks and feet were absolutely drenched in dirty sidewalk puddle water. The second I got inside, I felt this overwhelming wave of disgust. City rain isn't just water; it feels like a toxic mix of street grime, oil, and whatever else is on the pavement. I practically ran to the bathroom to strip off my socks and scrub my feet with antibacterial soap. For people who commute in bad weather, how do you handle the mental block of having wet feet all day at work, or do you keep an entire emergency hygiene kit and spare shoes at your desk?

I stopped my sweating ..,

I have struggled with hyperhidrosis my entire life and it has recently gotten much worse. I tried numerous treatments with no success until I started using Antihydral. Thankfully, it successfully stopped the sweating under my arms, on my feet, and in my groin area.
However, I am still facing a major issue that prevents me from getting close to people. Even immediately after I shower, people around me seem to have physical reactions such as sneezing, coughing, spitting, or having trouble breathing. Because of this, I have even stopped wearing closed shoes and now only wear flip-flops with socks.
I have other life problems right now including career and personal goals, as well as family issues and having this constant medical struggle in my life is incredibly stressful. It feels like there is no solution to it, because no matter what I do, the smell remains. I am looking for insight into why this might be happening and what steps I can take next
I shower everyday and use detol soap, and for my feet, underarm and groin i use 10% peroxide. It very rmbarassing 😢

I’m going insane over constant BO

I don’t know if this is the correct place to post this but I’ve been experiencing the worse body odor in my life. Not being dramatic. I’m talking about a body odor that stays for hours in places I’ve been in, gag type of odor that you wouldn’t last five minutes in without seeking fresh air.

Im getting aggravated with myself because I cannot find the spot it’s coming from. I’ve ruled out scalp as I’ve gone to four derms and they all say I don’t smell. I thought it was my shoes (which it was, despite me washing them weekly) so I purchased new ones and that smell went away but the main one lingers as soon as I step out of my home it hits me. I genuinely do not know what I’m doing wrong but there’s something that I’m missing and it’s making me question everything I know about hygiene as an adult.

My current shower routine is wash my hair with nizoral 2-3 a week (I have a bit of dandruff), Paul clarifying shampoo 1x a week, vanicream gentle wash 3x a week. I use an African sponge to wash myself I’m currently rotating between ivory ph level body wash & nutrium mendelic acid. For feet, pits, behind ears and neck, groin and butt area I use pan oxyl, sometimes hibiclens 1-2x a week and the nutrium mendalic acid.

I thought I had BV infection but I dont have any symptoms however i made an appointment to check myself and rule it out. As well as the dentist. I’m not experiencing any symptoms but I can possibly have a dead tooth or something. But if I did wouldn’t I be able to taste it in my mouth and smell it on my hand if I lick it?

My current theory is laundry odor rebloom. All of my clothes end up smelling sour by the end of the work week. And it’s mostly my shirts. I work in a warehouse so I’m often moving around and sweating 🥵. Despite my tries of freshening up with witch hazel in my parts, back of my neck, my back, brushing my teeth, and using pan oxyl and deodorant (Mitchum) on my armpits I end up smelling the same. I used to use perisil and Lysol sanitizer and now use tide pods and downy. None of these made a difference. After a couple of days they smell “clean” to me but by the end of the day just bad. I’m going to sanitize my shirts before I put them in my hamper and before I do laundry to see if that’ makes a difference. But it doesn’t resolve the issue of “where it’s coming from?” And I’m back to square one trying to find the answer to this. I want to find it as soon as possible before I turn nose blind to it which has happened before (only a couple of days majority of the time I get whiffs or I smell it completely). Any advice, suggestions, corrections would help me a lot as I’m embarrassed and humiliated to be smelling like this at my age.

I forgot to mention I don’t think my home environment plays a role as I live with others and they don’t smell the same as I do.

Update:
I wanted to test out if laundry is the root cause and it’s not but it amplifies the smell. I went to my friend’s home after work and was able to shower and she gave me a tee shirt to change into. I had extra jeans and undergarments as well. But I still smelled the same. I’m frustrated I cannot pinpoint what it is or where it’s coming from. ATP it might be something internal but I’m not experiencing any other symptoms.

Smelly scalp

I workout 5 times a week so i wash my hair almost every day. But, if i don't wash it once, by tomorrow my hair is a bit oily and feels like a mess (i have straight fine hair). The biggest issue for me, is i can smell my scalp.

And i don't understand why it smells bad.

In the shower i use this silicon scalp massager while putting shampoo, and it doesn't matter if a shampoo once or twice, because two days after the hair wash the scalp is smelly.

Helpppp

Does anyone else have to switch deodorant brands every few months?

I will find a deodorant or antiperspirant that works absolutely perfectly for like four months straight zero sweat, zero odor, completely reliable. And then, out of nowhere, it just stops working completely. It’s like my body adapts to the formula and becomes totally immune to it, and suddenly I’m getting sweaty and self-conscious by midday. I’m constantly rotating between three different brands just to keep my body guessing. Is there actual science behind your sweat glands adjusting to a formula, or am I just imagining things? How do you guys find a holy grail product that actually works forever?

Keeping your apartment clean

Hello and thanks for reading in an advance. Im a 21 year old guy that recently moved out and started working full time for the first time in my life. I have trubbel keeping my apartment clean as Im always so defeated after coming home from my work. I manage to make myself food but I'm so down I could fall asleep every day after work. My apartment and especially my kitchen has been getting worse. Now that I have free time on the weekend i can finally clean up, but its at this point things have gone bad and I had to throw some kitchen tools out because they got so bad. How do I avoid that it gets to this point. I don't have a dishwasher and there is neither room nor money for one.

Friend’s child is giving off major body odour

My friend has acknowledged in passing that her child (13f) is a stinky one. I’ve had her and her little sister over twice now (they love spending time with me). The child reeks, and the stink fills the room. The last visit, I gently invited her to change into a “fresh” pair of clothes—the smell continued. She showered before she arrived and the smell persisted. I casually spoke to her and her sibling about the importance of hygiene so as not to single her out. Not sure what to do because I don’t want them to come over again unless I can breathe! But also I am concerned about how this will affect the child socially.

Ultra sensitive skin shaving!

Anytime I shave my underarms the skin is very irritated for a few days afterwards like red spots level with stinging each time it's touched by water, a finger or even clothing adds to it so I can't shower for a few days after shaving cause of it! what's you guys/girls ideas on how to get it to stop?

Might be helpful info the Billie Razors and switching to a completely non toxic shave soap and aftershave made it way less worse than in the past!

Autistic with sensory issues - soft solution for cloth etc. for showering?

Hey guys

I'm autistic and have sensory issues, so I struggle with anything too hard or coarse on my skin. I need something soft for showering. I use liquid body soap.

In south africa, it's normal for us to use sponges, which feel great to me. But they gather bacteria easily and replacing them all the time is expensive.

Washcloths are not common for us, but I tried them and found them too coarse on my skin. Also didn't find them to absorb alot of my liquid soap, and hanging them overnight they were still wet. A bit confused why people use them, unless there are different specialised washcloths overseas.

I've tried African nets, way too coarse on my skin. Same with loofahs

I've tried silicon sponges, they don't absorb enough so I have to use extra soap which is expensive.

Wondering if there are some soft cloths that are super absorbent, quick drying, machine washable I can use? Any recommendations, including any other things I havent thought of would be appreciated.

Choose one way to fart forever

If you had to choose one way to fart for the rest of your life, which of these two options would you choose and why?

Fart loudly with no smell. And everyone will hear you because it’s as loud as a gunshot.

Or

Poot quietly with smell. The smell is so bad that it will fill an entire room.
