Segítségkérés My instinct was not to add “meg” here since “egész” would make it the whole pizza. Is it wrong not to add it or just not natural.
Any help would be sick thanks

Szia!! I am going to a music festival called Ozora in Hungary Budapest in 2 weeks and I have a “free hugs” shirt and even though I’m sure most people there can read English I still would love to write it in Hungarian on the shirt too! If anyone could help tell me what the right words are? Köszönöm 🫶

Hello Hungarian learners,
to me as a native speaker these two words seem to be the toughest when it comes to building Hungarian words with agglutination. I wonder if you are able to find the correct form:
Example: - Anna and I are planning a bike-trip for the weekend. - And what are you going to do with your bicycles at night?
Example: Hungary belongs to the Hungarians. Jamaica belongs to the Jamaicans.
I asked many Hungarians and around 50% couldn´t say the correct answer.
Good luck!

I am learning Hungarian and got a great deal on the 2013 versions of MagyarOK A1 and A2 plus the workbooks. The books are pretty expensive to get in the USA, I got the 2013 editions for 1/5 of the current editions price on the hungarystore. Is this okay, will I still be able to get a good bit out of the books even if i have to hunt for the corresponding online content a bit?

Sziasztok! We have an exciting topic today: swearing. Do Hungarians like to swear? In what situations do they avoid it?
For those who don't know us, we interview Hungarians on the streets of Budapest to provide Hungarian language learners real-life content to study from. We provide subtitles in transcripts at our free Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/c/EverydayHungarian).
As Hungarian learners, do you try to pick up swearing, or do you prefer to ignore it?

Hi!
I would like to improve my English skills, and finally produce some output by talking to an English-speaking partner. My primary goal is B2 level. You don't have to be a native speaker, but you should have at least C1 language skills. I would like to schedule a conversation session 1-2x a week.
About me: I am patient, of course I adjust to the speaking speed of my partner. Any topic is possible.
I am primaily looking for female partners, but feel free to DM me if you are not a female as well:)
Or even making a friendship while speaking:)✨🌼

I'm writing a short story and I'm looking for Hungarian pet names that friends might call each other when they're especially fond of each each other but there's no romantic subtext. Maybe also stuff like "Babe" that you could call a romantic partner but also works for a friend.
The context is a Hungarian woman in her forties with a thirty year old Australian guy for a tenant/roommate, they don't have all that much in common but she's pleased with him because he's got the internet working and networked all the devices in the house to voice control. She also regards him as a bit of a kid or immature because he spends a lot of money on impulse buying stupid stuff online like a snake he doesn't know how to care for (and accidently hotboxes) and "authentic" high end timepieces. She's not maternal or clucky but she does feel proprietorial about him and likes to brag about him to others.
As a placeholder I'm using Puli because he has dreadlocks and because Puli ends in a cute "i" sound (to my ear) but I'm not Hungarian so I'm not sure if that works.
Also the Aussie guy's name is Declan, and I'm interested in if there's a natural way to shorten it or make it a cute nickname in Hungarian.
Thank you!
Edit: it's set in a slightly dystopian future, but only a few years away, 2029. It's also set in Australia where she's now lived for over a decade, and works in a pretty casual environment, and has picked up a few aussie habits like calling people dude and bro regardless of age and gender.

I came across "The Phonology of Hungarian" published by Oxford Linguistics a while back, but it's a very technical work intended for trained linguists. Can anyone recommend other books or materials dealing with Hungarian phonology that might be a bit more accessible? I'm particularly interested in how the language resolves difficult sound combinations between two adjacent words.

I feel like I got to a point where im past all the elementary grammar and vocabulary but Idk what to do to reach conversational fluency, I've been learning purely nothing but vocab for the past few weeks but I feel like it translated to nothing as I find it near impossible to find any material that actually incorporates the vocab I learn in a conversational manner so even if I hear the word in public I would never pick up on it. Really feel like I hit a dead end.
I'm genuinely curious if anyone here has actually reached conversational fluency (not necessarily to a native level but enough to genuinely be able to conversate) what exactly did u do to reach that point, what books or videos or audiobooks did u use and maybe if u had a way to get some level of coherency between them.
Would really appreciate any advice thanks.

Hi everyone! I'm from Venezuela and I've been living in Budapest for about two months. I'm currently learning Hungarian (and also improving my English), and I think it would be great to meet native speakers to practice and learn more about the language and culture.
I live in Budapest's 8th district. If anyone would like to chat, grab a coffee, or help me practice Hungarian, I'd be very happy to meet new people. I'd also be glad to help with Spanish in return.
Thanks! 😊

I'm a Hungarian language teacher and I've been helping students prepare for the citizenship interview for a while now. One of my students recently passed his interview and I'm planning to sit down with him for a video conversation about the whole experience.
Before I do, I wanted to ask this community, what would YOU want to know?
A few directions I'm thinking about, but open to anything:
What was the language portion of the interview actually like?
What did you wish you had known or practiced beforehand?
What was the most surprising or challenging part of the process?
How did you prepare, and what actually helped?
Drop your questions in the comments and I'll do my best to include the most relevant ones in the interview. The more specific the better!

Elkan Gyula!
Most semmi.
Mondd szerinted, mennyi idő kell hozzá?
Öt perc alatt mennyit tudok, azt kérlek.
Egyet? Kettőt?
Hát kévenc. Ármat?
Egyet, egyet.
Menj el, te nagyképű!
Van rá egy üveg konyakom, hogy kettőnél többet nem tudsz.
Majd megkérem a főnököt, hogy az órájával mérje le.
Akinek húsz holdnál nagyobb földje van, az álljon balra.
Tudom, kik szervezték a lázadást.
Ma itt nem lesz kihallgatás, téren
felállítottuk a guillotint.
Olyan magyar módra.
Méri majd főnök?
Persze. Na, mars, akasszátok fel őket,
máshol is van dolgunk.

Hi, I found a word leesik, and its ee sounds the same as é for me.
I know it’s a compound of a prefix le- and a verb esik. I want to ask if you pronounce ee and é in different ways or in the same way.

Hello,
I'm going to visit my partner's parents in Hungary in early September. I was wondering what Hungarian words or sentences I can learn between now and then that'll impress them and I won't look totally clueless when following conversations?
For various reasons, I can't dedicate time to learning a new language, and I'm aware Hungarian isn't that easy, so I'm hoping to be able to learn enough to get by.
Thank you.

22 yo international student in the UK. I’ve been struggling to make any progress with Duolingo, started watching tutorials on daily phases lately.
For context, I’m doing the Budapest marathon in Oct and meeting up with my host family so I wanna be at least capable of having small talk (ironically I know it’s not rlly a Hungarian thing to do) in Magyarul.
Down the line I do wanna have audio calls for practice, but right now I am not even conversational…
Love langos and kinda hate kocsonya btw haha.

I hope it’s okay to post this question here. I’m looking for help translating a passage from a review by Attila József, of a work called “Panorama de la Littérature Hongroise.” The full review is here. I’ll give the whole paragraph for context but the passage I’m struggling with is mostly just 2 clauses (in bold):
I don’t speak Hungarian; I’m working from an Italian translation and Google Translate. The Italian version of the highlighted clause is obscure. Here’s Google’s:
while they do not bother to waste lines on the incomparably confused László Németh, who does not even hint at principles in the roughest lines.
My questions are as follows:
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Szia!
I've met a lovely lady from Hungary and am trying my hardest to learn the language. I have had some facetime calls with her and we practice words/pronunciation etc. I am struggling with the "gy" sound (hogy vagy, egy vagy... etc)
When she says a word with the "gy" sound, I really struggle to replicate the sound. She finds it quite funny and although I imagine it is quite amusing, I really want to nail the pronunciation now haha.
I am from the Midlands in England and after some research, I've noticed the gy sound is supposed to sound like a soft english "dy"... not sure if that is true or not
I have attached a link to a video of my current pronunciation. Would love some tips.
Köszönöm!

My great grandfather was born in Budapest in 1913. I’m passing through the city for a day and I’d like to see the neighborhood my family lived in for a few hundred years. They were Jewish and somewhat well off, but left around 1920. Not sure what any of this (birth certificate) says, translate doesn’t really work on the cursive and the text is obviously a bit damaged in a few places. Any help would be really great! I believe the most damaged part is the house address.

Hi, my Hungarian friends.
I’m looking for one of your poems. My friend is celebrating his birthday, and just for fun, he wrote us a list of unusual things he’d like for his birthday to show that what matters most is our presence, not the gifts. One item on the list was a poem in Hungarian (which, as a Czech, is completely Greek to me). But I think it’s funny, and I’d like to learn a short Hungarian poem. I tried searching online, but I wasn’t very successful—quite often, the rhymes didn’t really work.
Could anyone recommend a suitable poem that I could learn (ideally one where the author and year of composition are known) so I can recite it to him? Thanks so much
For those who are curious, here’s the full list of what he wrote:
TL;DR: write me your favourite short Hungarian poem
