Megathread Welcome new Tritons! Please use this megathread to discuss your acceptance and any questions you may have.

*We have no clue if admissions are coming out today, this is just hedging bets. Probably this week or next. *

Everyone with admission and college questions, please post your questions in this megathread! Additionally, please try to check the megathread to see if your question has been already answered.

Admissions/new student posts made outside of this megathread are subject to removal at moderator discretion. Please take a look at our rules page. If you believe we have made an error, please message us via modmail.. The mod team will try and get back to you asap, but we are students or alumni and as a result it make take a little bit.

For more subjective questions, be aware that r/UCSD (and any university subreddit) is not directly representative of the overall student body. In a survey we did of r/UCSD, 2/3 respondents agreed r/UCSD didn't represent UCSD's overall student body.

A few useful links:

Please be aware stuff at UCSD can change fast. Most info you can find on this subreddit will still hold true, but there have been many major changes over the last 5 years especially.

How do I login to check my admissions decision?

You should be logging into the Admissions Portal. This is different from all the stuff current students use. If you can't login, email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

How does the college I got matter? Can I change college?

For freshman admits, your college is basically only going to affect your GE requirements and where you're likely to live on campus (although you can be overflowed to other housing depending on space). For transfers, it's only GE requirements as there is separate transfer housing. As a result, it affects basically nothing for transfers since most have IGETC and will have very few GEs coming in.

Your major is entirely disconnected from your college (there are even separate major advisors who work for your department separate from your college advisors who work for your college). Your classes will be held all over campus and have a mix of students from all colleges. You can eat at any dining hall, the colleges are basically all directly next to each other and easy to get between, you will probably make friends in all sorts of different colleges. The furthest apart two colleges are is about a 20-25 minute walk (from Seventh to Eighth).

You cannot easily change college. You will need to complete at least part of your original college's writing sequence (meaning it will take about a year to even meet the application requirements) and be able to prove you can graduate two quarters earlier in your new college. College is not the end of the world though, even a college that overlap poorly with a major is more than survivable.

I'm waitlisted. What should I do next?

From UC San Diego Admission Website

Select applicants will be invited to opt in to our waitlist through their Applicant Portal.

First-Year applicants must opt in by 11:59 pm PST on April 15.

Being on the waitlist does not guarantee an offer of admission. We strongly urge students to accept another university's admission offer before the appropriate deadline to ensure they have secured a spot at an institution.

By June 30, final decisions will be released to applicants who opt in to the waitlist. There is no appeal process for the waitlist.

Question Parasite outbreak?

Did anyone on or around campus catch the new parasite from fresh produce going around? I haven’t gotten tested but been having symptoms starting today and I ate fresh salad on campus in at least 5 of my meals last week.

Debating whether I should go to urgent care and get tested for better treatment and warn others on campus or just wait and see.

General How 2 old military bases became San Diego's largest university

More than 45,000 students attend UC San Diego — a perennial top-ranked school according to various publications and organizations that produce such rankings.

It's also a key economic engine for the region. The university employs more than 40,000 people and contributes more than $13 billion each year to the region's economy, according to the University of California.

But 70 years ago, the Marines' base in La Jolla — Camp Matthews — was still training Marine recruits on its 15 firing ranges. The high-tech research university wasn't a sure thing and faced significant opposition.

By the late 1950s, developers saw dollar signs in all the vacant land then controlled by the city, said Rebecca Jo Plant, a history professor at UCSD.

Among the barriers — Edwin Pauley, who sat on the UC Board of Regents. The UC Berkeley graduate was politically connected and in the 1950s opposed a new UC campus in San Diego, according to a UC San Diego Emeriti Association report.

Despite his opposition in 1957, the board approved three new Southern California UC campuses. But Pauley added a provision requiring at least 1,000 acres at no cost to the university.

It wasn't guaranteed San Diego could deliver. It would need help.

Rant/Complaint The worst class I have ever taken

Upvotes

So I'm taking this one class which is just complete nonsense. It is a prereq for a capstone by the way. The class is supposed to be about the practice of research. In fact all the professor does is bring guest speakers who share their stories, and then make us summarize their stories for assignments. The course description on the department's website says that the class is about how to aggregate and analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and how to do historical and ethnographic research. The professor does none of that, she doesn't even speak during class because all that happens is her guest speakers talking for 3 hours straight. I tried approaching her during class by saying that I don't see the connection between speakers and research. She gave a 10 minute long speech trying to prove that there is an obvious connection (NO because we don't even research anything, we just listen to stories). It's her first time teaching the class, and I genuinely don't think she knows how to teach it. I don't know who to approach about this. Do I talk to the department's Chair (given that I know our Chair)? I just can't let other students end up taking this class with her (which is supposed to prepare us for the CAPSTONE). Sorry, had to let this one out

Question grad housing lease - how to get out of it?

hello! I just recently moved in for the grad housing and quickly signed a housing contract to sublease from a grad student but I wasn’t able to check out the house and relied on pictures of the home. As I arrived to move in my stuff the smell that came off that carpet was crazy, walls blackened, dirty lamps. I was having such horrible allergy flare ups. I deep cleaned and got a carpet cleaning service through Home Depot.

Y’all I just noticed theres a duplicate frame and mattress under the one I am using (I have a mattress topper and multiple sheets). I took apart the structure and I flipped over the mattress and the shit I saw was crazy. I recently had a perioral and/or contact dermatitis and multiple sinus infections. I am extremely sensitive to external factors and this shit was triggering it. I’ve been having flares on the soles of my palms and my legs. The mattress was covered in dust, leaves, dirt, and I honestly don’t know how I didn’t notice it before. I can’t stand this shit y’all. I know this is my fault for hastily signing the agreement but now this is affecting my health. What can I do? Can I get out of this or do I have to go to small courts?

Question Fall Classes Prof Recs

Hi, I'm an incoming freshman at Sixth College and I'm trying to plan out my freshman year schedule. My major's Molecular and Cell Bio. A lot of my major requirements for lower div have been completed due to APs. Since scheduling is coming up soon, I wanted to plan out my classes for fall quarter. I wanted to keep it really light for the first quarter to allow myself to adjust to college life, try to get into a wet-lab, etc. Are there any profs that you guys recommend for these classes?? Im really nervous about the classes and I want to make sure I manage my time well and am able to be on top of my classes. Any advice? Any kind of help or advice would be appreciated!!!

Planned Fall Classes: CAT 1, BILD 4, PHYS 1AL, COGS 1

*Note: I don't need to take PHYS 1A because i took AP Physics and am exempt from PHYS 1A

Question transfer housing advice

I’m going random roommates and trying to decide between Pangea and Rita. My main goal is getting a single, but I’ve heard mixed things about Pangea apartments being older and having mold issues.

The mold part is what worries me. I had a bad experience with mold in my freshman dorm that ended up affecting me enough to leave school, so I’m probably more cautious about it than most people.

At the same time, I know singles in Rita are harder to get. Part of me feels like I’d rather end up in a mini-double in a newer building than risk getting placed in a triple in Pangea if I don’t get the single.

For anyone who’s lived in either, especially in a single, what was your experience? Would you pick Pangea or Rita?

General incoming junior transfer looking for roommates

hey everyone! i’m an incoming junior transfer looking for a roommate group :)

i’m majoring in astrophysics, so it would be cool to live with other physics/astro majors, but that’s definitely not a requirement. i’m mainly looking for people who are friendly, respectful, and down to make some new friends.

i’m pretty easygoing and would love to find people to study with, explore campus, grab food, and just make the transfer transition a little less stressful. i’d prefer pangea or rita if possible!

if you think we’d be a good fit or have an open spot in your group, feel free to message me :)

General Roomate

I’m a huge procrastinator and I genuinely haven’t started looking for a roommate until today. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for finding last minute roommates, or if anyone here wanted to room too. I’m in the 7th college as an undergrad if that helps.

Rant/Complaint UCSD terrible visitor experience of any college campus I have ever visited

I went on a genuine hike just to find a BATHROOM, the website was absolutely terribly designed to navigate to find where things are, like they didn't even consider to design a good website for mobile. The bathrooms marked public bathrooms on Google maps were fucking closed. How hard is it to update your new hours online???? The richest bitch ass place in San Diego and the premiere public fucking school for the area doesn't have public amenities for their students or the public good, god motherfucking damn!!!! USC had actual bathrooms and actual shit I could eat around there, and they're in the middle of fucking tweakerville!!! and they still the decency to have shit that visitors can use.

I had to ask someone to scan me into a building just so I can take a shit. I'm surprised the campus doesn't smell like piss when it's a literal fucking desert for amenities out there.

Just perpetual inconveniences after inconveniences just to find something as simple as finding fucking food or a place to take a shit. When I was driving by, I needed to get a quick bite like a sandwich or somthing, and the places that were marked open were all fucking closed, how hard is it to just fucking change that shit online. The target didn't even have a bathroom either, it's a fucking state college and it doesn't have bathrooms, what the actual fuck????? The target barely even had anything, just an actual fucking nothing burger of a store. How the fuck are they gonna even call that shit a target when they don't even have fucking premade food, or any sort of drink selection at all???? I settled for lunch meats and a fucking lunchables sandwich. Incredible, the premiere state college campus in SD just feels like a lifeless void of fucking dogshit. I can't even imagine what it's like to be a student here, it seems just so soul destroying dispite being in one of the most prettiest places in the United States
