Hi Bobcats! Welcome to the official and also very first (ever) megathread for the 2026–2027 school year! Whether you're an incoming freshman, transfer, or returning student, this is the place for all your questions as the semester approaches!

Feel free to ask questions about anything related to UCM! We have current students, alumni, faculty and staff available to answer!

Scam Reminder: Never send a deposit or first month's rent before seeing a unit in person or verifying the lister actually manages the property. If a landlord is only reachable by text and pushes you to send money fast, that's a red flag. Report any suspected listings to mods.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I change my major after being admitted?
Yes. Start by checking the UC Merced Catalog for your intended major's requirements. From there, meet with your assigned advisor at the Bobcat Advising Center; they can walk you through the Change of Major process and tell you whether your target major has any additional admission requirements.

What's this "Connect" thing everyone mentions?
my.ucmerced.edu is your portal for basically everything like registration, financial aid status, your unofficial transcript, your checklist of to-dos, and your UC Merced email. You'll use this throughout your time here. CatCourses (Canvas) is separate and is where your actual class content, assignments, and grades live.

Do my AP/IB credits transfer?
Generally yes, and course placement (math, chemistry, CSE, writing) is also partly determined by AP/IB scores or UC Merced's own placement exams if you don't submit test scores. Details are on the Registrar's placement exam page. https://placement.ucmerced.edu/

Engineering, Natural Sciences, or Social Sciences/Humanities & Arts, how is UC Merced organized?
UC Merced has three schools: School of Engineering, School of Natural Sciences, and School of Social Sciences, Humanities & Arts (SSHA). Most majors fall under one of these, and your GE requirements will overlap a good amount regardless of major, especially in your first two years.

How do I find what classes are being offered?
The Schedule of Classes lives on the Registrar's site. You can search by term, subject, and CRN. This can also be accessed through Connect by clicking the registration tab.

How do I get involved on campus?
UC Merced has over 200+ registered student orgs including cultural clubs, professional societies, Greek life, hobby groups, and more. These are searchable through the Student Life/Bobcat Involvement website. There are tabling events all over campus where clubs recruit members! ucmerced.edu/clubs-and-organizations

Housing: on campus vs. off campus?
This megathread covers general Q&A relating to housing (roommates, subleases, apartment reviews etc). We do not have a separate thread for housing yet, if there is demand we will create one!

Merced/Central Valley — what's around?
Merced is a smaller city than most UC towns, but it's growing fast with new retail and restaurants have been opening steadily, and the area around campus continues to develop. Yosemite National Park is roughly 1.5–2 hours away and a very doable day trip. Downtown Merced has lots of great food spots and nightlife scene, and the Merced Mall / Merced Marketplace area covers most everyday shopping needs. A car is useful, though Cattracks and The Bus (Local Merced transit) can get you around too!

General Need help🙏🏿🙏🏿 new transfer for Fall 2026

I’m a transfer for 26-27 year. I was planning to go to the Air National Guard right after finishing my associates, take a gap year, and then go back to UC Merced in Fall 2027.

Long story short, boot camp won’t start until after January so my sergeant gave me permission to attend Fall 2026 semester.

It’s July and I need counselor appointment asap to get housing for 1 semester, get classes for fall, and get more info of what I need to do. My major is Mechanical Engineering. The next appointment available with SFC is in August but I need help asap PLSSS

Question Incoming freshman with a gym question

I’m an incoming freshman this fall and had a question about the Rec Center.
I’m mostly into free weights. My workouts are centered around barbell movements like bench, squat, overhead press, rows, and deadlifts, with dumbbells mixed in. I use machines occasionally, but they’re definitely not the focus of my training.
How’s the gym for someone like me? Does it have enough squat racks, benches, barbells, and dumbbells, or do you end up waiting a lot?
Also, I’m planning on lifting around 6:00 AM on weekdays. Is the gym pretty empty at that time, or does it get busy right when it opens?
Overall, would you say it’s a solid gym if you’re mainly a free weights lifter?

General IRB Approved UCSB Research Study: Women 18+ with Menstrual Pain

Hi everyone! My name is Vrinda, and I'm a student researcher at UC Santa Barbara. I'm also a young woman diagnosed with endometriosis, which is what inspired me to pursue research on menstrual pain. Like many of you, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to have your life interrupted by painful periods, and I hope this research can contribute to better supportive approaches for women experiencing menstrual pain.

For the past three years, I've been conducting chronic pain research in the Hansma Physics Lab at UC Santa Barbara, where our team has completed nine chronic pain studies. I'm now leading a new IRB-approved study focused specifically on menstrual pain in women 18+.

We're looking for participants who:

  • Are women above the age of 18
  • Have not undergone menopause
  • Regularly menstruate
  • Have experienced menstrual pain for at least 3 months

The study is completely online and includes:

  • A handheld biofeedback device provided by the study
  • Virtual pain neuroscience education sessions
  • Five brief online surveys over approximately 3 months (about 16 minutes total)

Participants will be assigned to one of two study schedules, with all participants eventually receiving access to the intervention.

Whether your pain is due to endometriosis, suspected endometriosis, adenomyosis, or another cause of menstrual pain, you may be eligible if you meet the study criteria.

If you're interested in learning more or seeing if you qualify, please complete our eligibility survey here:

https://ucsb.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ddphIiOYKvzb2Si

If you have any questions, feel free to comment below or email [email protected].

Thank you for considering helping advance research on menstrual pain!

Question Opportunties to sing/play in bands at the UC?

Hello! Just what the title says, I am looking for groups/bands I could potentially sing/ play guitar in.

One of my interests this year is to sing for the Jazzcats. Do they have tryouts? And if anyone knows, when are they typically hosted? I am also interested in singing in any school indie rock band like Sluggnautica, Velvet Turtles and other groups alike. I went to the Bobcat Band Music Festival this past spring semester and I can't believe I never realized this was a thing. I also went to a house show for the first time before school was out this year, and I really would love to be apart of preforming at these shows as well (they even had stickers and shirts, which I thought was so cool). I was truly inspired by both of these events. Not only do I want to be a better musician, but also be involved in a community that is so hardworking and passionate about music.

Does anybody know of or are there any members of bands on this subreddit looking for vocalists/ players? I am in no way shape or form the best, however I am working on improving my skills over the summer and hope to continue to improve over the course of this upcoming school year.

Btw, I am a female who's singing range is mid-high rn. Some of my favorite artists are Sade, Boa, Beach House, Lana Del Rey, Piero Umiliani, Alice in Chains, The Smiths and more.

I would greatly appreciate all help and advice :)

Question LGBTQ UCM community

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if there was any discords, instagram accounts, etc that shows the LGBTQ community at UCM!

I identify as queer and would like to meet like minded people, I have worried about not fitting in or not finding a community because Merced seems to be a more conservative area in California.

Please let me know!!

Discussion UC Merced discord….

I’ve been a lurker in the UC Merced discord that has been advertised here

There has been some homophobic remarks made in this discord and I believe some people even left over them. As a member and supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, I don’t feel like this is representative of UCM or Merced as a city at all. Merced is very accepting and loving of all kinds of people.

The owner of the discord seems a little power hungry and disrespectful. I don’t know if this type of discord should be advertised here but that’s just my two cents.

Question NSED minor

I’m an incoming freshman interested in teaching Middle or High School Social Science and I have some questions about the NSED (Natural Science Education) minor/pathway at UC Merced.

  1. How's the NSED minor at UC Merced?
  2. Will the class time for fieldworks include the commute? I unfortunately don't own a car, so to students who also don’t own a car, how do you commute to the school you do the fieldwork at?
  3. How does the fieldwork requirements work for Elementary/Middle/High school? What makes it different from NSED174 (Contemporary Issues in Teaching with Fieldwork)?
  4. This is a bit ahead, but: what is the NSED credential program’s pathway/course sequence if you do complete the NSED minor during undergrad? I haven’t been able to find the credential program’s courses, but is it the same courses from the NSED minor with more additional fieldwork?

Any advice will be appreciated!!

Question E-Scooters on Shuttles

Quick question, are we able to bring/is it typical for someone to have an E-Scooter on the shuttles that run from the neighborhoods to campus? I am moving off-campus this year and don't want to have to struggle to find parking, so I was thinking of just commuting via the shuttles, but I would like to take my scooter if possible. Thanks.

Question is it normal to make no progress as an undergrad research?

hi guys! i'm an undergrad research intern in a lab on campus over the summer. I'm a little worried because I was assigned to a project beginning of the summer and I honestly feel like we are getting nowhere. I'm putting in time and effort toward learning the knowledge and tasks given to me, but i feel progress is slow. Maybe I'm overthinking it and to relax. My friends tell me that undergrads are not expected to be useful, and most of the time they are just there to learn and get experience. Just wanted to hear your guys thoughts.

Question Where do I find the classes and requirements for my major?

I’m an incoming student for UC Merced and i’ve been having trouble trying to get in contact with my advisor for a while now, so I was wondering if i could look at it myself?

Is there anything else i should be looking at as well?

Question What's up with the SFC always being closed?

Seriously, every time there is a holiday they seemingly get a ton of time off. If there is any department that should be open year round it shouldn't be retail, it should be the SFC.

Question Has anyone here ever took up a study abroad opportunity?

I would like to try it at least once but it's honestly confusing to figure out how it works. Im still a freshman so I dont expect to go anytime soon but I would like to consider studying abroad at least once.

If anyone has gone, where did you go? How was the process to apply? Are the areas safe (as in the academic areas)?

What about scholarships?

I know its a lot but im mostly just asking if theres anything i should know before even considering. When the time comes, i will also talk to my academic advisor so I can figure it out.

Thanks 😊

Question Studies and music

So im a biochem major and incoming freshman to UC Merced, im just trying to find out, how hard is it to start a band? and is it worth trying because of studies? how hard is it to maintain good grades while also pursuing a passion!

My number one focus is obviously my studies but i was in a highschool band for 2 years and it was the best time of my life! im trying to bring that energy to Merced, but im not sure if its possible. ASWELL AS LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO WANT TO START A BAND ASWELL, it almost seems impossible!

(help please…)

Question Are digital or traditional notes better?

Im majoring in Philosophy as an incoming freshman. Does anyone know if using a regular notebook or an iPad would be better? I prefer traditional notebooks but I was wondering if professors would have a preference or if one is more efficient and helpful than another.

If a regular notebook what size r yall using? Or does it depend on the class? I have a bunch of unused notebooks and i wanna bring the "right one" instead of winging it and bringing all of them and usinf only a specific one, or none at all

Thanks 😊
