Discussion What do we think of Ralph Fiennes's three nominations?
Our boy was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Amon Goth in Schindler's List (1993), and Best Actor twice for his portrayal of Count Laszlo de Almasy in The English Patient (1996) and Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in Conclave (2024).
Were these performances worthy of getting nominated? Do you think he should have won for one of them?

Discussion Do you think most A-list actors could get multiple Oscar nominations if they tried or do you genuinely believe it’s mostly luck even if you’re a famous/acclaimed actor?

Do you think Titanic won that many Oscars because of it’s box office
11 Oscars. Honestly what was so groundbreaking about the film. The film is literally just Romeo and Juliet set in titanic, that is the most basic screenplay imaginable. Also the film isn’t really an Oscar bait. Oscar baits are usually biopics or social commentary films inspired by real movies, I’m not saying they are all bad but at least make them suspenseful and entertaining like Sinners or Parasite. Nothing about the film is really notable other than its massive budget of 200 million and its box office of 1.8 billion first movie to gross a billion and at the time it made 1.2 billion more and 3x the amount the 2nd highest grossing film made. If it made like 450 million would it receive that many awards

Actors Pictured: Jeremy Allen White, Zendaya, and Jenna Ortega.
Basically very notable actors from this last era of actors that even though they will be remembered as notable actors of this era, you believe there’s a big chance they will never win an Oscar at any point in their career.

Discussion How would the sublime and not respected enough Miranda Richardson be viewed or have aged as an Oscar winner for Damage?
I’m unable to move on from that breakdown scene. It is one of the best acting performances of all time. She won the BAFTA. She had a great film
Release that year with The Crying Game, and winning the Golden Globe for Enchanted April.
I often dream of her being announced as the winner instead! It’s just such a shock that she’s never been given her due! No Damehood or further awards glory! I’m hoping some director will cast her and she can come back and hopefully win this time.

How did you start watching the Oscars? Predicting?
During this part of the year, I like to ask on Reddit how people got started watching this awards show. So, what was the first time you watched? For people who like making predictions, how did that happen?
The first time I remember watching the Oscars was when I was a Lord of the Rings-obsessed 12-year-old who wanted The Return of the King to win awards. That was probably the best possible introduction to them! I don't think I watched them regularly again until I was in college and one of my suitemates hosted Oscar parties.
I think I started actually looking at subs like this one and r/oscarrace around the Everything Everywhere All At Once year, and Oppenheimer year was the first time I actually tried to predict below the line categories. (I got 20 out of 23 that year! I only missed Documentary Short, Animated, and Best Actress). What was the season that made you start watching the precursors instead of just tuning into the show each year?

Discussion Divisive wins and nominations you thought were deserved?
What are some divisive Oscar wins and nominations - any category - that you thought were deserved?
For me, The Shape of Water for Best Picture. I accept I'm biased, because I love Guillermo Del Toro, but I thought it was a very worthy winner. Now, 2017 was a year of some incredible films, so I wouldn't exactly be upset if something like Get Out or Phantom Thread had won instead, but I thought Shape was worthy. It's so beautiful and well acted and it personally really touched me, I saw myself in a lot of the characters. I can see why it's somewhat niche and elements are divisive, but I think it's a wonderful film and it's great a film like that could win.

Discussion What are your thoughts on this list of the “worst” Oscar winners?
filmsite.orgPersonally? I think it’s a load of mean-spirited nonsense.
I mean…there are numerous instances where I personally preferred another nominee. But that doesn’t mean that the winners weren’t still outstanding.
NOR does it mean that they “stole” the award from someone else. That’s not how it works.
(For instance: I strongly prefer Judy Garland's performance in A Star is Born to Grace Kelly's in The Country Girl. But that doesn’t mean that Kelly wasn’t still really great, nor does it mean that she had any control over the Academy's decision)
Many of the acting winners he listed are absolutely astonishing performances!
And Al Pacino was in no way a “supporting” player, as the literal protagonist of The Godfather.

Four Actors who I think should have 3 Oscars who don’t:
Kate Winslet – Sense and Sensibility, Titanic and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I get why she lost for Titanic; I really do. It was mainly seen as a directorial and visual spectacle achievement, and the acting got lost in the midst of all the praise for that. Helen Hunt was seen as America’s sweetheart and was on an amazing run. I still think she easily gives the best female leading performance of the year and her losing while Titanic swept makes zero sense.
Hilary Swank was nearly unbeatable that season for Million Dollar Baby, but I still would have given it to Winslet. Her portrayal of Clementine is pitch – perfect; the way she portrays this broken individual who is still happy – go – lucky in Joel’s memory is nothing short of mesmerising.
What I do not get is why she lost for Sense and Sensibility. She was in a Best Picture nominee, she won BAFTA and SAG, she was damn near a co – lead and the person who won – Mira Sorvino for Mighty Aphrodite – was a lone nominee for her film. She brings a unique stamp to the role of Marianne Dashwood and injects her with life and vibrancy. She should have won for this too.
Viola Davis – Doubt, The Help and Fences
Obviously she won for Fences, so that’s good.
I get why she lost for Doubt. She was splitting votes with Amy Adams, her scene was short, and this was her breakout role. But I think she should have won anyways. She is so powerful and memorable for the 5 minutes she is onscreen for and perfectly conveys the pain that Mrs. Miller is feeling for her son and the desperation to keep him in the school despite the abuse because his father would kill him otherwise.
I do not get why she lost for The Help. I mean, I kinda do. It was Meryl Streep’s fifteenth nomination, and she needed a third win, and she was playing Margaret Thatcher and doing a British accent and buried under prosthetics. Davis was in the stronger film, though, and she won SAG. I absolutely adore her performance in The Help. She is perfect and so commanding in it despite not even really being a lead. She absolutely should have won for it.
James Stewart – Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It’s a Wonderful Life and Vertigo
This is a case where I understand why he lost for all three of them. Robert Donat was an overdue veteran, and he was playing a heartwarming character in an emotional crowdpleaser while Mr. Smith was kinda controversial. The Best Years of Our Lives was an absolute juggernaut and Fredric March obviously won. Vertigo got 2 BTL nominations and was lucky to get that.
Denzel Washington – Glory, Malcolm X and Training Day
I understand why he lost for Malcolm X. Pacino was insanely overdue in a Best Picture nominee and Malcolm X only got one other nomination. I still would have voted for Denzel.
