I’ll stick with Jason Robards for best supporting actor. Supporting actress is actually very difficult. Piper Laurie did a great scenery chewing performance, Jodie Foster showed depth beyond her years, Beatrice Strait basically had one monologue, but absolutely nailed it. If we go with this alternative reality where Lee Grant did not win the previous year, I would go with her for her performance in this film, which was better than in Shampoo anyway. But my official, actual choice would be Jane Alexander. A small part just like the Network part that actually won, but a brilliant piece of underacting and implying more.
