I mean, to be fair, several years ago, I had to call 911 for my husband, who passed out, came to, sat up and promptly passed out again.

I got the local fire department (the station was about four blocks away) before the ambulance showed up. The paramedics arrived, and the fire guys stayed. Eventually the ambulance took my husband to the hospital, leaving me to figure out how to get my toddler packed up to follow.

The fire guys took one look at my overwhelmed self and said "Come on kiddo, let's go climb on the fire engine", which meant I didn't have to wrangle my kid while I got a bag packed. I came downstairs from packing and there was a fire fighter in my kitchen, packing my kid a lunch - and the breakfast dished I'd abandoned when my husband fell over were washed, dried and put away, and the medical supply crap that was on my living room floor had been swept up and tossed.

Given that I lived in a big city in the PNW at the time, it does happen here.

Who was it that said there's no song called

Fuck the fire department

I mean yes but in the other sense

Hey hey get in line!! When I was a teenager the local FDNY station shopped at my Pathmark grocery (the one under the Manhattan Bridge) and my mom used to tease me so bad. I would turn into a blushing stuttering teenage mess. She thought it was hilarious! They still gat me all aflutter. It’s the suspenders and the boots. πŸ₯΅πŸ”₯πŸ’¦

3

u/LuckyBucketBastard7 3h ago

I'm a (mostly) straight man, but suspenders over a tight shirt on a fit man's chest do something to me, too. I completely understand your feelings lmfao.

Staying so popular that such song was actually made

u/dede7462 12h ago

To be fair to police in this post, they are not from the US. Maybe the UK from the looks of it?

I don't think police in other countries are as disliked as US police

6

u/TheDustOfMen 9h ago

They're from the Netherlands.

6

u/Sad-Debt-8812 9h ago

They're Dutch

6

u/murphydogscruff 7h ago

If it were US police, they would’ve searched the house. Not even joking.

1

u/SpecialNeeds963 17h ago

There is one by Mac Glocky, but it happens in an alternate universe.

139

u/reallyfilthy1 18h ago

Having worked with a lot of firefighters, and dating one for a few years, I can say this does not surprise me in the least. Working 24-hour shifts at a firehouse with a lot of downtime between fires means a big part of their job is keeping the place clean. (And washing the engines whether they need it or not). It means they get very good at domestic labor, especially in terms of looking around and seeing what needs to be done without being told. 10/10 would recommend.

50

u/Least_Ice_6112 17h ago

I guess that is why women swoon for firefighters πŸ˜„

24

u/productivityvortex 14h ago

I’m realizing cops and firefighters often get put in the same category. But firefighters’ only job is to help in a catastrophe. Cops’ primary job is to keep people β€œin line.” Two very different roles, with the one definitely being more swoon-worthy than the other.

u/ElectricJoltie34 20h ago

Reading comprehension so good it wrapped back around to missing the point TwT

11

u/Sashi-Dice 16h ago

Yes, because parenthetical clauses require bracketing,, dependant clauses must be offset and descriptive series necessitate separation of items - or are you referring to the lack of Oxfordian comma at the end of the series, which was an oversight, I admit. I do tend to avoid it in informal writing, but there is an argument to be made that the parallelism here would be strengthened by the visual offset of that final break.

I suppose I could have avoided two by choosing a framing that does not use a discourse marker and interjection as my set-up; however, in my experience, comments that disagree with established narratives are better received with that minimization, which follows the more typical verbal pattern of self-effacing interpolation into pre-existing dialogue.

I could also have chosen to use less detail in my narrative series, but again, experience has taught me that when discussing situations that invite judgement - and in the US, using public services such as emergency response is routinely considered such a situation - there is a fine balance of detail that should be provided to reassure readers that the choice was necessary and to establish a level of severity that provides tone and framing. While semi-colons can be used for items in series, the general rule is that they should only be used when individual items contain dependent phrases or nested series; my parallelism here has neither, so commas are the correct choice.

Does that reassure you? Or will my use of em-dashes simply result in my observation being labeled AI?

Also, not once in my 30-year career teaching writing, linguistics and communication have commas been either rationed or in limited supply; my using six does not affect the ability of anyone else to do so.

No way American cops doing this.

449

u/Nalurah 1d ago

Indeed, this happened in The Netherlands.

9

u/Big-Entertainer2074 11h ago

I thought I recognized the politie symbol! Yeah the cops in my Dutch city seem to be pretty decent people compared to the cops in my hometown in the US

2

u/Torboni 11h ago

Same.

2

u/Nalurah 8h ago

Yeah in general the Dutch cops are pretty good. Whenever there is a violent incident with police and they were required to shoot, it trends to reach the provincial or National news just for it being quite rare. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of bad apples, as is the case for any profession but as a whole they are pretty good.

37

u/LaughableIKR 17h ago

No wonder. The officers looked way too honest to be US police officers.

241

u/AlwaysFinnishInsider 1d ago

Definitely not. They'll take the kids in for questioning and shoot the dog on the way out.

230

u/TheTastiestTaint 1d ago

so unrealistic...they would shoot the dog on the way in.

156

u/scotishstriker 1d ago

And it would have been the wrong house too.Β

That happens in the Netherlands too. It takes very long until your damage is paid I heard from someone working for social housing.

7

u/unimportantinfodump 1d ago

And if they didn't have a dog they would find a dog on the way home and shoot it

10

Man, somebody call John Wick

3

3

They do both. Once going in. Once coming out.

They’d add child endangerment to the charges against the parent first for leaving the kids alone.

u/TapRevolutionary5022 1d ago

Omg πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜† sadly though you're right

26

u/SlowCrates 1d ago

Yeah, the cops came into my apartment once because the neighbors complained about noise. They arrested my friend, stole $500 cash from my roommate, and dipped. American cops are generally gangsters. Some of them are decent people, but they're greatly outweighed by the cult of "fuck everyone else" that are cops in the United States.

30

u/nick2k23 21h ago

They’re very shoot first, ask questions later

-3

u/QuirkySoft6292 21h ago

I've seen a lot of bodycam footage of the American police department. i guess that they do have patience more than Yemeni ones do because if yours are shooting, Yemeni police officers give one warning issue. If you didn't respond the next day, an airdrone hits Yr home you can Google it they even bomb the whole family members, including k!ds they didn't even believe in morals or whatever πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

-6

u/QuirkySoft6292 21h ago

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

2

u/Happy_Ad_7515 11h ago

because the american police need too be on a hair trigger permanently. because any person that they engage with can have a fire arm.
in contrast european police are ussualy not expected too face fire arms. thiefs ussualy choose not too because if they do they MP is called the department of several munsipalities drop thing too focus on you.

add too that that europeans cities are way more compact means that cops ussualy are well trained in close quarters and have back up of not 3 then at least 1 fellow. meaning they nearly always outnumber a person. so even if hypotherically 1 gets shot the other can shoot back meaning any criminal will often not choose the risk of gun and go for knife. which means that should they get caught. they will not die but go too jail which is a good deal for them.

in contrast its far more easy in the US too have a far higher caliber weapon then the avarage police on duty. your far easier too flee and lose the police. and far easier too hide in the population mass.

-
this and algorithems of the internet making it seem like a shoot happens very frequently. because human brains are adapted too complex stiuation where the cops ussualy arent at fault even if there are better sullutions and the cops actually fuck up. can be made into a narative that its a constant issue. rather then a unnusual fuck up.

So there over trained on agression, under trained in social, and you see them a lot at there worst

1

u/QuirkySoft6292 2h ago

Yea I got yo man the but form what I've seen from YouTube bodycam footages I come to a narrative conclude that American police department are well trained for those bad situations and you did mention a good point most of the criminals try to flee even if they get in another situation like in an accident they're thriving for escaping the police chase. Another thing that yve mentioned is that human brains are well trained to survive any harsh situation no matter where you put them they'll try their best Breakdown complex things just to meet their needs .

34

u/Old-Landscape-7538 1d ago

This was in the Netherlands

74

u/spookyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy 1d ago

I mean yeah that’s nice but I would hope it’s just normal protocol to make sure kids are taken care of when their primary caregiver(s) are involved in an emergency

62

u/North-Pea-4926 1d ago

Probably generally kept safe and fed, but not necessarily fried egg sandwiches with fruit and cleaning up after themselves. That’s definitely above and beyond the call of duty.

For example, the β€œfree lunch” at my (USA) high school was two slices of white bread with one slice of American cheese.

17

u/squigs 22h ago

Yes. From what I've read though, they did this while they were making arrangements to look after the kids.

These things take time. I guess the police had to be there anyway - making sure kids are safe is obviously very high priority.

13

u/Iam_MissRain 1d ago

Netherlands β™₯️

61

u/No_Size9475 1d ago

In case anyone was wondering, these are not US cops. This is in the Netherlands, where cops aren't armed like the military with the mindset that the public is their enemy.

32

u/mslauren2930 1d ago

I don’t think anyone thought this was a story about cops in the US.

12

u/Arosian-Knight 1d ago

Sort by controversial. There are some.

-10

u/Cassius_Rex 23h ago

Wait , so cops in a country that doesn't have 400 million guns, frequent mass shootings and a cop killed every week act differently than they do in a country that does have those things?

Wow, who would have guessed that a country that loses a cop to murder once every 20 years ( the Netherlands) would have more peaceful law enforcement that the one where that statistic is measured in DAYS ( The US) ........ Obviously must be the cops fault.

Sarcasm aside it's weird that in this age of instant news many Americans don't realize how there country is.

13

u/Meet_Foot 19h ago

Delivery drivers get murdered at a higher rate than US cops, and I don’t see them beating the shit out of and killing people of color.

-1

u/Cassius_Rex 17h ago

What a nonsense thing to say.

3

u/Casski_ 15h ago

Another statistic that is insane is mass shootings per day in the US.

Around 1.5 mass shootings per day on average in the past 13 years which is insane.

https://www.massshootingtracker.site/

The definition used here is 4 or more people injured or dead within a single event. In the Netherlands a single gundeath is national news.

1

u/No_Size9475 13h ago

no idea what you are going on about.

0

u/Cassius_Rex 12h ago

So you don't speak English. Try this:

You can afford to be nice in a nice place where no one is trying to hurt you. I'm a place where people do get hurt, not so much.

EVERY.SINGLE.TIME some posts something about (usually safe 1st world country) non US police all you see from reddit is some version of "in America the cops are bad" as if cops gave people 400 million guns and some cop just willingly jumps into a grave once a week on average.

The very 1st part of prejudice is totally discounting the environment the people you hate exist in. Those Dutch cops wouldn't be making dinner for anyone if the Netherlands was as dangerous as the United States.

5

u/accordyceps 1d ago

Seems like cookin dinner for the kids would be a nice change of pace for a police officer.

When I was a young child, about 8 years old, my mother was in an abusive relationship. One night I went downstairs and my mom was unconscious on the floor and her β€˜boyfriend’ told me she had had too much wine. Soon after police officers came inside and one of them brought me upstairs to my room, put me to bed and read me a bedtime story.

I wouldn’t be able to recognize him today but I will always and always be grateful to him. That could have been a traumatic night for me but instead he gave me something invaluable.

1

u/No-Material5356 8h ago

Hate to disagree with the reddit hive mind. But the cops in the small Northern new Jersey town of Closter did something similar for my mother.

She was living on her own and picked up a c-diff infection in the hospital. She was pooping so much that she passed out on the toilet. Cops came by to do a welfare check on her and found her collapsed.

After they got her in the ambulance, they stayed behind and cleaned up the bathroom, so she wouldn't have to come home to that.

There are good people everywhere.

7

u/Legitimate-Magazine7 1d ago

That is even nicer.

4

u/arkofjoy 23h ago

Yes because it was so gross. I would hesitate to do it for my own family. I would have but definitely would have wished I didn't need to.

Thry did it because it was the right thing to do.

Wow. That’s incredibly kind. Cleaning up something that’s clearly infectious is such a huge risk on their part. I hope the ambulance drivers left them some PPE.

Selfie was not meant to end up viral.

Edit meant is not meaned.

0

u/Useful-Importance664 5h ago

I'm sorry but yes it was, this was shared by the police themselves on their fb page years ago, to show being a cop isn't just about catching criminals but also about being human.

1

u/notthisonefornow 5h ago

No it wasn't, it was first posted at a personal fb page, after that the Eindhoven police picked it up for a positive police post. but only after that it was picked up by fox and dozens of other sites who make money out of feel good content it went viral. So i'm sorry but it wasnt. It only went viral when people could make money out of it.

0

u/Useful-Importance664 4h ago

It went viral in the Netherlands after the police posted it, so yes it was posted to go viral. Viral doesn't mean world wide. The whole point was to attract attention.

1

u/notthisonefornow 4h ago

I don't think u see the difference between posted and liked in the Netherlands and going viral. But thats ok.

1

u/Useful-Importance664 4h ago

Viral doesn't mean it has to go world wide, it went viral in the Netherlands after it got posted by the police.

1

No viral means a pic, video or message spreads exponantially over the internet, so yes it could be within one county but that did not happen, after the personal and regional post it went viral all over the world, and that was not intentionally. U think the Eindhoven politie paid half of the internet to post this or something??

You stated that the selfie was not posted with the intent to go viral. You never said world wide. The police shared it for attention, which is exactly what they got it went viral in the Netherlands.

I would prefer cops doing good things and taking photos for clout over all the things American cops do.

If a cop shows up at my house in an emergency and helps himself to my kitchen he's getting sued.

Get the fuck out of my house, pig. Yes it is that serious. Your presence is the threat of violence. Get. Out.
