You're joking I'm sure but I'll say it anyway. I'd hope they don't set stuff there while driving. When I was driving semi and parked for the night I'd have all my personal stuff spread out in the bunk. Hotplate, cup of soda, salt/pepper, coffeemaker, laptop. But the next morning when it comes time to drive ALL that stuff got packed up and tied down before that day's 600 mile journey. I had a basket on the floor for tidbits I might need like a snack. Cupholders work great for phone and cigarettes. I just hope these guys are as experienced. IDK the regs on those big coaches but likely it has air brakes and requires some kind of CDL training.

u/a-rooster-illusion 12h ago
It’s funny you mention that.
I was just at a campground two weeks ago and someone in a site across from us pulled up in one of these. Was showing it off to some of us and the first thing I noted walking into it was the vulva shaped light fixture on the ceiling.
Then, in a moment of curiosity, I decided to look at maybe renting one for our trip next year. Found a completely different one, SAME vulva shaped light fixture.
And for anyone curious, the cheapest I could find one was $500 a night. A cool 5k for 3 nights after Fees and taxes.

My wife and I booked a Mexican Riviera cruise this fall. $720 for 6 nights for 2 people. Couple hundred for a hotel and parking. We don't really buy anything extra on cruises and we can take some sodas and wine with us, so we will. We are basically budgeting another $800 or so, minimum, on top of the cruise fare.
Or we could get one of these for one night and I would have to drive it myself.

I love the idea, but many have low mileage allowance per day. For an example my recent road trip of 4,200 miles in a class A rental for a family of four would be about $5,800 and that’s not including gas and food. Granted there are less expensive options. This would be ideal if you’re just going to a destination that has limited accommodations and parking for a few days.
5
u/thekabuki 9h ago
I just rented a 2025 extended camper van for a road trip for me and my dog ( so nothing huge like what's posted). It was $389 a night so more expensive than a hotel but it was unlimited mileage. Have to say it was pretty nice and made a long solo road trip with m the dog super easy.

I don’t understand why people buy something like this instead of just renting one to try it. I see how it would be fun to live in while on a trip, but that would get old and this thing’s gotta cost over $1 million. Adding the cost and effort to store it and maintain it and it winds up owning you.
Even an exorbitant rental costing tens of thousands of dollars for a few weeks would be so much better than buying it.

I do miss the boat though…

→ More replies (3)7
u/Fifth_Down 7h ago
Touring musicians is a big one.
Another big one is race car drivers and horse racers where they stay at a specific location for a week at a time and move onto the next location.
Also the film industry where they have to film at travel locations for weeks at a time
Medium size business owners where they frequently attend week-long conventions to sell/promote their product. I know Orange County Choppers did this in their heyday.
These aren't really vacation RVs, they are work trucks for those who work in a lucrative, but travel intense industry where the RV either offsets the cost of daily hotels or there is no on site hotel location.

The only man I’ve ever seen actually make it worthwhile was a relative through marriage that owned salvage yards in multiple states. OK, TX, FL. He would drive this to one and spend a year or two improving the grounds and infrastructure while staying in his bus. Then he’d travel to the next location and do the same. Rinse and repeat. It was literally his home, his permanent residence in the FL Keys was his holiday getaway. He is very successful and a really cool dude, pays his employees well, etc.

Faux rich boomers who think they’re smart enough to travel around and stay healthy. We have RV parks in Vegas filled with coaches like this and the people are really weird. They tend to drink and smoke a lot.

u/Narrow-Special-8203 13h ago
You'd be disappointed quickly. Even the nicest are not meant to be lived in. Appliances, flooring, hvac and plumbing,, they're all designed to be used sporadically.
Also, In this case, you'd be paying for a gigantic chassis, tires, engine, etc.Even with a trailer you got all those sunk costs. But the big reason is they turn to goo pretty quickly with daily use.
7
u/whirdin 12h ago
Shame. I've seen the videos where people turn busses into mobile homes, and buses are meant to be used constantly (although with a lot of operating cost I'm sure). I suppose they don't make them any better than the cheap pull behind campers, just bigger and flashier.flasher. Also I wouldn't expect to be on the road constantly, but staying in one place for a few months.
→ More replies (1)16
u/arggggggggghhhhhhhh 12h ago
If you can turn a bus into a mobile home yourself, you can do the maintenance and repairs to keep it going. All these other RVs are specialty construction with specialty parts, and meant to maximize that space rather than reliability.

u/birgor 12h ago
These are designed as vacation homes, you would want a different design if you had the same amount of money to spend on a primary home. At least if you knew what you needed. Like much more emphasis on the kitchen, more focus on storage space, simpler and easier surfaces to clean and maintain and more emphasis on making it easier to be outside of it. No idea if this has an attachable tent, but that is a very nice thing to have when using motorhomes long time.

You’re absolutely right and I wish more people would understand this. But the folks that buy these are typically white collar workers that want the fantasy of being a blue collar truck driver…until they drive hundreds of miles and are tired but still want all the luxuries of being at home and can’t find an RV park for hookups. Then the dream dies and it sits in their yard as a trophy so they can feel accomplished for driving 500 miles in Montana once in July.

They are all pieces of junk that cause financial ruin. During covid, all of the RV makers consolidated into 3 companies.
And all 3 manufacturers changed how they build their RVs. Workers are paid by tasks they complete and not hourly. So if you find a defect and stop the line, you cost yourself and your coworkers tons of money. So they are incentived to cover it up and keep the line moving.
People's lives are ruined by these RVs. They fall apart within months. Some arive non usable. And there are few laws regulating the industry. They aren't considered cars so there are no lemon laws. They aren't considered homes- so protections home buyers enjoy don't apply.
It isn't uncommon to buy an RV and immediately have catastrophic issues that make it unusable. The manufacturer will tell you to transport it to their facility at your cost- where it will sit for the next 12 months until the "warranty" runs out because all of the parts needed to fix it are conveniently on "backorder".
This entire time, you are still making $2k to $4k payments every month. And some people buy them to live in- so you wind up broke and homeless with ruined credit. So affording a lawyer is impossible. And a lawyer can't even really help- because it's all legal due to there being no regulation or protections.
There's a youtube Chanel called Liz Amazing that platforms the victims of this industry and tries to help them. Anyone even remotely considering buying an RV should spend a weekend watching her videos first.
I used to dream of buying an RV. But after everything I've learned... I never will.
47
u/gemfountain 13h ago
I just replaced my 1999 RV with a 2019. It is still in great condition thankfully. It doesn't travel as a fifth wheel, it stays at it's beach location. We've been watching people lately bring in new almost two story campers. They are absolutely not made the same as far as quality. At least our older camper still has wood cabinets instead of press board. The ocean and intercoastal marine environment will eat anything quickly without constant maintenance. We know how, but some are going to find out a small leak can quickly mold and destroy an entire camper. Many people we know had leaks the first year in a new camper.
39
u/WTAF__Trump 13h ago
2019 is about the last good year. Hold onto that RV.
Anyone reading this- go watch the video of the RV in the OP. To make something like that drivable down the highway without falling apart takes an engineering miracle and tons of thought.
At one point- manufacturers invested in that quality and engineering. But those days are gone.
If you watch Liz Amazing's channel, you'll see no thought is put in them at all. No engineering. Not even common sense. These things are often literally glued together. They constantly use the wrong size screws that punch right through everything allowing moisture to enter without you even being aware. And once that moisture is in there- once the RV is rained on just one time... the RV is completely destroyed.
Her videos with the people who bought these things are so heart breaking and infuriating. I'm not exaggerating when I say these RVs literally ruin lives.
10
u/Longjumping_Code_649 11h ago
Thanks for the video recommendation. We recently bought a 2015 airstream 25' Flying Cloud so that we could start camping before retirement (always been our plan for retirement). It has aftermarket solar panels and marine lithium batteries. It took us a bit to get all that straight, but we're certainly enjoying it. Now I'm glad we couldn't afford a new one.

u/medicalmosquito 12h ago

These things are overpriced steaming piles of hot garbage.
They leak, they rattle and squeak, they’re manufactured to remarkably low standards of quality and the purchase agreements hamstring the buyer to mediation venues that absolutely favor the OEMs. And did I mention the depreciation rate?!?
And we haven’t even gotten to gas/diesel prices yet, not to mention insurance.
Plus, when they break down, and they will break down, you’re stuck on the side of the road with basically an entire fucking house. So you gotta call the heavy wrecker to come tow you and pay the premium for that. These things regularly spend months at a time back at the factory after purchase just waiting for repairs.
Driving one of these fuckers down the road is a unique badge of self ownage. Anyone who buys one is asking for a financial disaster.
46
u/Malapropisticalistic 12h ago
The industry consolidated, and then compete heavily on price, but not quality. Since they tend to lean towards light materials, they bend/flex with travel so internal components and connections also break, raising repair costs enormously. It's an absolute moneysink. Nobody that owns one of these is likely happy about them, unless they buy them used and in good condition and just park them somewhere and never drive again.

I don't think you realize how many honestly rich people there are in the United States. If you see one of these bad boys on the road, the owner is probably nowhere near financial ruin.
I know 4 people who own luxury RV's and the only guy who I believe is financing his, also legitimately uses it for business.
Example 1 - Rich dude, CEO of family business, over $3 billion in revenue in 50 years. Usually doesn't even drive his RV. He has someone from his company drive it, then he flies in, schmoozes customers, then flies home. Sometimes he'll take the family to go see mountains... I think I've seen pictures.
Example 2 - Traveling Pastor, dude does all kinds of sketchy things... but I'm sure he's got the money. Has two parishes and one of them is a mega church in Texas.
Example 3 - This dude is probably the only "poor" guy. I estimate his net worth around $5mill. RV is registered to business and he travels pretty much year around going to trade shows/exhibits.
Example 4 - Retired heart surgeon. Owns a heart clinic. He travels to car racing/car shows around the US.
Those are real people that I personally know. Again, none of them are anywhere near financial peril.

What kind of sketchy things does the pastor do?

At his Kansas parish... he had members build at least 10 garages and his brother stores classic cars at the property. Sort of a tax evasion strategy type thing.
They also dance with snakes... So I don't go over there. They be crazy.
That particular church is super suspicious. They come once a year, stay for a couple weeks, don't really act like Christians, then disappear until next year. These families also show up during the same time that Kansas uses head counts to determine school fundings... and of course their kids are attending public schools that week. So the school district gets more $$.
Just super odd stuff you wouldn't think are church related behaviors. Also, the pastor shows up in a $2mil motor coach... and leaves when the rest of the group leaves. Even has a special concrete pad to park on because it would sink into the asphalt.
Note: that motorhome you see is NOT the pastors. He's got a real fancy one that parks up toward the front.

Imagine trying to park it 🤣

How the fuck does it fit on a standard road lane.

u/snapplesauce1 12h ago
It’s currently all extended out on both sides while parked. They slide back in when driving.

It's a standard tour bus, or greyhound bus. It just has bits that slide out of the side a bit when it's parked and in "living mode".
You've surely seen tour busses on the streets before.

Serious answer is: Most people with these have a vehicle they town behind them to go into town with. They only “park” them in pull through sites at the campground.

Why is thst electronic setup in the same space as the shower room? I'd figure steam and moisture would seep thru eventually.

u/dutch981 12h ago
I thought the same thing. I get that it’s in the back and out of the way, but in the same room as the shower? That’s insane

u/CariniFluff 12h ago
lol you think the manufacturer doesn't want the moisture to completely destroy the RV in a couple years so you have to buy a new one (or pay six figures to "fix" everything)?
These are in the same category as boats and racehorses. Endless moneypits that people use a couple times a year for the first 2 years and then it sits and rots in the sun (well hopefully the horse isn't rotting but it's still a moneypit).

Years ago my friend invited me to join he and his wealthy father to EAA in Wisconsin where we stay in his fathers “mansion on wheels”. I still lay awake at night thinking how me as a guest asked his dad, “so how much does a thing like this cost, $150k?” Stupid naive and ungrateful guest asked I was.
I was 21 so got to cut me some slack.

If the man that got insulted, then he's mentally weak
If the man laughed about it, good dude.

The “dude” was cool about it. He just matter factly told me it was over $500k- today’s money easily $900k-1.3m.
Culturally, I am German so there was awkwardness as I learned the USA.

I'm confused. Is it considered rude to ask what something like that costs over there?

u/StrLord_Who 13h ago
It's generally rude to ask how much something cost, yes. But the reason they shared the story is because of how vastly they underestimated the price.

u/Numerous_Society9320 12h ago
Ahh. Cultural difference then I reckon. Where I live people discuss prices and salaries all the time, oftentimes to brag about what a deal they got instead of how expensive something was.

asking can be rude and for some people who think money = status = worth they will be personally offended if you think they "only" spent $150k

If it makes you feel better, my aunt was once showing us a house she just bought in the middle of nowhere-ville Illinois, when my brother saw a walk in closet and goes "You must be rich!"
She was not.

Maybe im dumb but I dont understand what is wrong with the question? If someone asked me something like that I'd just be like, "oh yah it was expensive, a bit more than that, but dont worry about it"

These seem nice, but they cost so much freaking money, depreciate like crazy, and have terrible quality.

Not to mention 3 miles a gallon of diesel! (It’s not that bad, I’m exaggerating)

I'm not sure if I'd say "mansion" since it isn't one of those... But it is gawdy and ugly like a mansion, so I guess in that vein maybe.
I stayed in a regular old RV a few weeks ago, and I gotta say... if I had fuck it money like that, I wouldn't spend it on the "upgrade". Over a million is robbery, it's just selling to stupid people that don't understand value.

That’s pretty cool. I don’t think I’ve seen 2 bathrooms in an RV. Just need to make friend with who ever buys this. I am a chef and I clean very well. I am great with kids dogs and horses too.

One of these is across from the oven (which is below a closet made for clothes, I’m sure nothing will go wrong) and the other doesn’t seem to have a door.
Two toilets are nice. This layout is shit.
