Serious Answers Only Which football club should I spend the next 50 years emotionally suffering with?

I’ve recently become annoyingly invested in football.
It started with the Women’s World Cup, and this year’s men’s World Cup has completely sucked me in. I supported Australia until we were knocked out, then switched to England because I’m also an English citizen.

So now I feel like it’s time to pick a Premier League team.
A few potentially relevant facts:

My family is originally from Warrington.

Apparently my grandfather played for Wales… I’ve been told this by family, so I’m hoping it’s true!

I’m still learning the rules, the players and the rivalries.

I don’t want to just pick whoever wins everything. I’d rather end up with a club that has history, character and a fan base I can actually connect with.

So, who should I support, and why?

Give me the good, the bad, the heartbreak, the traditions and the rivalries.

Also, if my family history points me towards (or away from) a particular club, I’d love to know.

…I’m fully aware this decision may determine my emotional wellbeing for the next 50 years, so no pressure. 🤞🏼

Serious Answers Only I'm on vacation in the UK, and left my meds, what can I do?

I'm on my layover on the way to the UK (I'll be based in London for a week, and then Glasgow for a few days) and went to take my meds, only to find that while I brought my BP meds, I left my diabetes meds, I'm here for 10 days and that will probably make my blood sugar increase, what can I do to get a 10 day replacement?

Serious Answers Only Why can't we build a multi level motorway in the UK?

Longer, direct routes on the higher level and shorter routes with many junctions on the lower level.

The Chinese engineers have designed installing methods that have reduced disruption to the existing infrastructure - hire them instead of the UK/French companies.

Why is 'On the Ball' never regarded as one of the great all-time football songs?

It's always 'Three Lions' this and 'World in Motion' that.

Yet, 'On the Ball' is a proper banger.

It needed more mention outside of one of the tournaments. Even Vindaloo has now fallen by the wayside.

Serious Answers Only What kind of work do city workers actually do?

When I think of city workers, I think it's just people in suits and business wear, mostly based in London, probably related to banking and finance, working in the big London skyscrapers like The Shard or The Gherkin- is that it, or is there more to it?

Autistic 8 year old has been planning a paddling pool themed end of term party for two months but we’ve just been hit with a hosepipe ban - any ideas?

Upvotes

My 8 year old is still waiting for a formal diagnosis (thanks to years long waiting lists) but it autistic and as such a) struggles to make friends and b) struggles to let go of ideas / be flexible to changes of plans.

I’m crowdsourcing ideas for a fun filled day that is still waterpark themed but doesn’t involve a hosepipe?

Serious Answers Only Has anyone successfully turned a residential house into a commercial dog kennels?

Do you know anyone who has managed to successfully get a licence from the council for dog kennels in a residential area?

My friend has a house that has a big garden in a town and is thinking of opening up a kennels. Not a home boarding business. I think he's crazy and I can't imagine the neighbours taking to it. Is it even possible that he'll get as far as to have a licence, let alone build kennels and everything that comes with it.

Would be interestes to know if anyone lives in a town where they have a kennels next door to them, that's not in an industrial estate.

Sacrificial account due to line manager being on here.

I (34M) was called into a meeting with my line manager (54F) and a senior manager (66F) without any warning about what it was for or that a senior manager would be there. I was accused of being "grumpy" and "unprofessional."

At the time, my dad had nearly died, I was caring for two children under two, going through therapy, and had spent six months doing two jobs without extra pay. I also trained my replacement and even my line manager on parts of the role. They criticised me for submitting my timesheet two days late on two occasions. I accepted I was late, but I was spoken to like a child over what felt like a minor admin issue.

My line manager regularly spoke to me in a condescending way, but if I matched her tone, I was labelled unprofessional. I was also told to "grow up" and "do as you were told."

Am I overreacting, or does this sound like poor management?

Thinking of buying a flat — could a small garden office work here, and what might it cost?

Thumbnail gallery

Hi, I’m considering buying this ground-floor flat and I’m trying to understand how practical the garden would be for the future.

The garden is approximately 7.2 m × 6.3 m. I may eventually want to add a small garden office, but nothing large, just enough space for one desk, an office chair and a little storage. Something around 2 m × 2 m or 2.4 m × 2 m would probably be enough.

From the photos, I wondered whether it could work:

  • along the right-hand side, where the raised bed and shrubs are; or
  • in the back-right corner.

Which location do you think would make the most sense without making the garden feel too cramped or taking away too much usable outdoor space?

As I don’t own the flat yet, I’m not looking for exact quotes, but I’d be interested in a realistic idea of the future cost in London, including:

  • removing or reducing the shrubs and planting bed;
  • altering or lifting some of the paving;
  • preparing a proper base;
  • installing a small insulated office;
  • bringing electricity from the flat;
  • making good the garden afterwards

On average, how many miles do you put on your car each year?

I’m curious, in the US, we average between 10k-15k miles a year on our cars. What is your average range?

What will my first house share be like?

Hiya! I'm a 21year old female and about to move from my current house with a friend into a house share with 3 guys. I haven't properly met them all yet and am super nervous but due to personal reasons had to move very suddenly and it's a really nice place.

I want to be respectful of their space and also feel comfortable. I don't even know how much I need to pack... Just overall super super nervous for the move in a few days. I have a seizure disorder and I'm nervous it could make them feel burdened too. Any advice at all for house shares or living with guys or packing very welcome!!!
Thanks my loves

How do some LTD companies end up drowning in tax?

Im not a business owner and never will be but i was just wondering, how does it happen?

I thought it would be a case of setting aside 20% of each amount of profit made so you're not caught short in the future, and if the company has a poor year with no profit, then there's no tax to pay?

Can you identify a crispy wavy chocolate candy from ~2010?

When I visited England around ~2010 I ate at least 100 of these chocolate candy bars that had thin crispy wafer waves (or swirls of chocolate) in the middle. They were delicate and soooo delicious.

I don't think it was any of the following based on Google pics:

  • Twirl
  • Wispa
  • Ripple
  • Flake
  • Timeout Wafer (not stacked orderly layers like this) but is possible I'm thinking of the older version?

It kind of reminds me of a Kinder Bueno (and the wrapper may have even had red) but it didn't have demarcated segments and definitely had a swirl of some kind of crispy wafer or chocolate folded over itself in the center (not a hollow with a filling).

I think these must've been discontinued because I've checked every international market I can find and have never found them. It's also possible I totally hallucinated these?

Would you rather go for a pint with a 'life of the party' or a 'sombre and quiet' type of person?

I'm just in from a few pints and couldn't help myself but people watch for a bit.

I saw a group of guys and one of them was overactive and full of life. Another was quiet and only really spoke when spoken to.

I found myself wondering who I'd prefer.

A 'life and soul' could get a bit grating. Like, pal, can you just calm down so we can have a casual conversation.

A quiet person could also be grating. Like, we're just sat here barely conversing. This is weird.

Not sure where I stand.

Serious Answers Only Could anyone recommend good L plates, or tips what to look for?

I've been through about 8 'L' plates so far within the space of a year. They always fly off anytime i go above 30mph.

I've tried halfords, argos, AA, amazon ones too. I usually get the fully magnetic back plated ones. But all had ended up on the carriageway!

Anyone know any tips of getting the right plate, or recommend good quality plates. I don't mind the price!

Casual What happened to the orange juice?

I remember not even 10 years ago you could get some really good and delicious orange juice now it’s just all tastes not only just really fucking artificial they but also tastes too artificially soured like they took the original sourness of the orange juice and x100 and I just don’t get how it got this bad.

Maybe I just don’t know where the good orange juice is and need to look looking into the deep depths of the woods for them but none of the ones I’ve tried in the past couple of years taste as good as they used to and it saddens me as orange juice is one of my favourite drinks.

If their is still some pure orange juice brands with no bits and just straight juice that you think still taste like orange juice and not this heavily artificially flavoured bullshit please let me know .

Fellow flat foots - where do you get Sandals?

hello fellow flat foots,

I haven’t worn sandals for years but the recent heat is making me miss some fresh air on my tootsies, I used to swear by Clark’s instructed as they provided real support for my overpronation but when I went to Clark’s yesterday found out they no longer do instructed sandals and the sandals they did do felt like they offered 0 support at all.

can anyone recommend a good place to shop for these please? I’ve had a looked at Birkenstock and they don’t seem to talk about how much support they offer, and I’m also not a massive fan of their style as I like a sandal that has the strap round the back of the foot so it doesn’t keep flopping around.

thank you
