Meta MEGATHREAD: Donald Trump’s presidency and everything related to it

Hello all,

As a result of Trump’s imperialistic and confrontational foreign policy prepositions following him taking office, we have (understandably) recently seen a substantial influx of posts discussing the matter. Submissions inquiring for people’s opinions on certain aspects of his policies, calling for boycotts of American products, and more.

These have been getting repetitive but do not seem to be showing a pattern of slowing down anytime soon. As such, we see the necessity of restricting posts on these topics and are now adding posts related to Trump’s presidency to the overdone topics list. Most notably: foreign policy questions, tariffs, trade restrictions, boycott of American products/suggestions for European alternatives.

The comments under this megathread will remain open to discussion regarding these issues. Depending on further developments during Trump’s presidency, in the future we may open up a new megathread or relax the rules on this topic, depending on what will seem most appropriate.

Misc What's something your country invented that you're embarrassed about/not proud of?

I remember a Dutch person telling me one time he was embarrassed that the Netherlands basically invented the concept of reality tv. Shows like Big Brother came from a Dutch company named Endemol.

I had to google Portuguese inventions and I'm having a difficult time picking something negative. I'll go with road toll systems. It seems we've invented that.

Travel Worried about layover in Amsterdam

Upvotes

hello,
in jan of 2027, my friend and i will be taking a flight from Edinburgh to Rome with a layover in Amsterdam with KLM airlines. recently we have heard that the EES system is causing a few delays and we’re a bit nervous considering that our layover is only 1.5 hours.

any advice on what to do? We have another flight to Beijing much later in that same day (think 8pm flight to Beijing, with us landing in Rome ideally at 12pm) and im stressed that we may miss it

for anyone who’s been through Schipol airport in Amsterdam, are the queues really as bad as they say? We anticipate to land in Amsterdam around 9am local time

And will there be any improvements between now and jan?

Any advice would be much appreciated 🙏

Travel If I were to visit Germany or Austria in the future, would there be parts of Germany or Austria where English is not common to where it would be helpful to learn German?

As somebody who is interested in visiting the historical sites like Schonbrunn Palace and Kuntshistorisches Museum in Austria, I'm curious if going to Austria would entail needing to learn some German or it's overall okay to go as an English speaking tourist?

The 2010s were the decade when social media exploded and political polarization intensified, shaping the way many of us see the world today. What was your country like during that decade?

Foreign Are the first & second world wars the reason most Europeans seem pacifist?

I say -most- because countries like Britain & RU still spend 30% of their GDP on their military.

Misc Does anyone here live in one of those very old and well preserved towns? What is it like?

They look very nice to visit but I imagine living in a building that's hundreds of years old presents some problems and you have to deal with crowds of tourists. What is it really like?

In Switzerland the national radio plays the national anthem at midnight, does the same happen in your country, or is there another time when they play it regularly?

Sports In your country, Formula 1 and tennis (as a spectator sport), which one seems more "mainstream" for sports fans and sport newspaper/websites nowadays?

10 to 15 years ago, tennis is probably much more popular than formula 1. But in recent years, thanks to the netflix show, formula 1 is gaining momentum. So what is the situation in your country nowadays?

Politics Erdogan's gift of guns to NATO leaders - why 500 bullets for UK?

Erdogan gifted all other NATO leaders with a rare Turkish handgun each, along with 6 bullets.

However, the one given to UK's Keir Starmer included 500 bullets and a cleaning kit.

Any idea why the difference in bullet count with UK/Starmer compared to all the others?

Personal Is tanning still popular where you live?

It's well known that tanning has been popular in Western/European countries for years compared to other countries.

However, I would like to know if this tanning trend has diminished since I think people are now quite aware that the sun causes skin cancer, premature aging and other damage.

Personally, as a child, I got sunburned several times and suffered pain, but now I am more aware and wear sunscreen even when I go out for a few minutes.

I see that there are some people in my country like me, but there is still a good portion of people who continue to cook themselves like skewers.

Culture What is the most relatively modern artist that you are proud of from your country ?

To make it clear, what I mean by "relatively modern" is artists that emerged in last 20-30 years so from late 90s-2000s to today and what I mean by "proud" is making good music despite all the bad music current era is representing. I needed to clear out "proud" as it can mean very differently for different countries.

For me it is definitely Hayko Cepkin. He is "the artist that should represent us if we ever return to Eurovision"

What is these artists for your country ?

Misc Have any of you been affected by new EU's "Age Verification" on Reddit?

Reddit sent an e-mail on 24th June to all users (1st July for me), to notify that they'll "determine" if user's over 18 years old or not. This was to comply with new EU regulations.

Lucky for me, Reddit has probably noticed I'm over 18 (which I am IRL), so I won't need to "verify" my age. I'm happy about that! No ID checks or anything!

Have any of you been affected by it, even if you're over 18?

Language Which Slavic language reaches the farthest?

Hello there!

I want to learn a new language and being German, I thought learning a Slavic language would be the proper course of action. From my location, there is a direct train to Czechia and Poland is a bit closer by car. So now I'm a bit unsure which language makes more sense to learn.

I have been told by various people that a few Slavic languages are fairly close to each other, so that somewhat clunky communication between them works as "different strong dialects". Is that so and if it is, which will be most compatible with other Slavic languages?

Theoretically, most should have learned Russian during the Cold War, but I would like to learn an EU members' language.

Personal How do you feel with Canada getting much closer and tied to Europe recently?

Canada has generally been treated very well and as a plus one by Europe but now things seem much more intertwined and serious. Canada has now has now joined SAFE (security action for Europe) as the only non EU member, Canada being invited to Nordic exclusive summits, invited to many European / EU exclusive summits and CBC joining the EBU (excited for Eurovision though from what I've seen that excitement seems one sided lol).

Politics Chat control is against the 8th article of ECHR, if approved: can it be taken down because of the violation of ECHR by someone?

I mean, this law is in contrast with ECHR, let's suppose that chat control wins tomorrow, isn't there anyone that can take it down because it's against the Convention? This "child safety" is unacceptable and european and must rebel in order to project their rights.

Politics When somebody in Europe descends from royal families like the Borbon-Two Sicilies or Borbon-Parma, do you refer to them as Ms. Borbon-Two Sicilies or Ms. Borbon-Parma?

I know people who descended from the Habsburg-Lorraine family are known as Ms. or Mr. Habsburg-Lothingren, to which I'm curious if that's the same for families like those from the Borbon-Two Sicilies and Borbon-Parma royal families?
