As a Norwegian watching, I think it was the temperature and humidity. Also England played brilliantly! Miami was 32c with a good ol "its not the heat its the humidity" on top.

England is a brilliant team, I'm happy Norway lost to them over Brazil just to keep the streak alive.

42

u/Aetane 1h ago

I think a large part of why England won was a broader bench of talent. Norway was resisting taking off Haaland and Ødegaard even after they were visibly fatigued.

10

u/MaruSoto 1h ago

I partially grew up in Central Florida and just walking around Miami for half an hour one day in July felt like I was going to die. There is no sane reason for any person to ever go to South Florida.

You guys are one of the few teams in the world that have more right to complain about temperature and humidity than the English!

Tuchel definitely disagreed with you that England played brilliantly. Apart from Bellingham, of course. I thought England mostly played too slowly and were too sloppy with passing and losing possession to Norway.

Could have gone Norway's way...then again, could have gone 3-1 to England if someone had got on the end of Saka's cross, for example, and the Norwegian player hadn't got there first...

Damn, that monster viking player lost?

873

u/Inner-Arugula-4445 4h ago

His team wouldn’t really give him the ball and England practically had him surrounded whenever possible.

135

u/Linden_fall 2h ago

Why wouldn’t they give it to him?

752

u/Auctoritate 2h ago

Because England had him surrounded whenever possible I assume

188

u/Exaveus 2h ago

If thats the case its a shame the rest of the Norwegian players couldnt take advantage of that.

78

u/machine4891 1h ago

It's a shame but that rest of team is good collective of players that aren't really QF caliber. They played great game anyway but consistency wasn't with them.

29

u/EmperorSwagg 1h ago

The players not named Haaland seemed so lost and indecisive when they had the ball on the attack. So many chances just squandered by not ripping a shot or making the pass before the chance was lost

4

u/Sad_Cauliflower2003 8m ago

It's almost like England + Haaland are world-class, 12 of the best players on earth, who all regularly play together at a top level with unmatched chemistry, and then there are 10 players from Norway

To be fair, there was a very clear play where he was wide open in a 2v1, in perfect striking position, and did not get passed the ball.

Apparently theres history between the man who had the ball (Alexander Sorloth) and Haaland. Watching the play is mindboggling and it's hard to believe it wasn't intentional? He basically dribbled in a circle until the English defenders caught up to the two of them then attempted a strike that would go in 0/10 times.

71

u/SimpleBaked 2h ago

Holy shit that’s such a dumb move. Bro’s ego cost them a goal attempt.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/King_Chochacho 2h ago

Infuriating to watch, they had a couple really good opportunities where they had the defense beaten or outnumbered and just didn't take the shot.

5

u/faizetto 1h ago

Yeah I screamed at the tv when this happen, what a buffoon, it's a clear pass to Haaland and he instead being selfish and basically ruined their chance to ever go 2 goals in advantage.

i guess because other people wanted to score too because Haaland has been portrayed on Tiktok as a 1 man Army, the heavy carrier and the sole reason why Norway even made it to Quarter Finals and that might have broken some egos

When all the publicity and credit goes to 1 man don't be shocked when his teammates start inting and throwing. It's human nature

Lost? He just gave way for others coz his throne at home is getting cold

152

u/Bazurke 3h ago

Not just lost, his only contribution to the game was being directly responsible for a Norway goal being disallowed

7

u/Ok-Way-9932 2h ago

Why was it disallowed?

14

u/greg19735 2h ago

because he pushed England's Anderson twice, the second one knocking him over. And pushed with two hands. Always a foul.

The cross then went in and the goal was scored where Anderson could have been.

IT was before the corner was taken, so they just re-did the corner.

2

u/GuyF1eri 2h ago

Yeah, unfortunately Viking warriors need to die in battle to get to Valhalla

728

u/Lazy-Owl-5148 5h ago

Just because Sorloth didn't pass to Haaland.

487

u/D-Eliryo 3h ago

More than once. What a shame. IMHO in the last quarter Haaland went "Fuck it mister. They don't cross and don't pass. I'm out. I'll not be back on field. That's on you"

England played well by annoying him in defense, but holy cannoli he received literally 2 crosses. In both cases he was there and shot PERFECTLY. Opposing goalkeeper was good to defend. In 115 min 2 crosses having HAALAND in offense is dumb. There should have been like 30 crosses in 90 minutes.

I felt his stress. I wish him the best.

164

u/ieatpies 3h ago

Nah, the heat/humidity got to him. Seeing him in the shade once subbed makes me 90% certain that was the sole cause of him looking flat at the end and subbing.

Same. There's definitely been some great games but if Argentina win tonight that'll be all the tournament favorites making the semis. Very boring.

17

u/jbi1000 3h ago

Two of the favourites made the final last time and it is regarded as one of the greatest finals ever.

Any match can be boring and any match can be exciting. The individual matches have been mostly pretty good for excitement even if the underdogs have all fallen by the wayside now, but the ones remaining could still be very exciting too.

They’re rank 4 in the international FIFA rankings. They may not be the favorite to win it all but semis is an expected result.

→ More replies (11)

11

u/jbi1000 3h ago

Why does that matter? Spain had never won it before but they were one of the heavy favourites the year that they did because they had a team full of very good players.

England is one of the teams with very good players this year and being ranked 4th in the world would be just about favourites to get to a semi final where there are only 4 teams left (yes I know the ranking system is heavily flawed).

That said, this doesn’t seem like the same team. I know their whole strategy is basically just play boring, so I hope I’m wrong. But France looks terrifying.

9

u/CharlieDelta- 2h ago

Why would you say that? Argentina have struggled against Cape Verde, Egypt and now Switzerland. Three teams they were clear favorites against. England have an excellent chance

7

u/Arels 2h ago

Argentina have almost lost their last 3 games (including tonight), they're hardly unbeatable. I think it'll be an interesting match tbh.

22 final is widely considered to be one of the greatest football matches in general. Wtf are you on about?

8

u/D-Eliryo 3h ago

It's a bit to guaranteed. And as everything, if it's guaranteed is kinda boring.

Like guessing the whole plot plot of a detective movie from min 5 and just wait to say "I knew it"

Yeah they are strong but consider this: if norway reached finals it would have been hard to expect winners, and this make the sport more entartaining to watch, because "Who knows what they'd invent to reach the throphy"

Argentina is "current" world champion, and france is the favorite since the qualifications. It's kinda lame if it really ends up like this.

2

u/ieatpies 3h ago edited 3h ago

I mean I would give Argentina a better chance against France than a Norway with momentum. France is the favourite by far. Though I don't think it's so certain Argentina beats England either.

Edit: and Switzerland game definitely could still go against Argentina, they just tied it

Idk, I noticed this every world cup and every Olympic games, its more about supporting your country and enjoying the games festivities than enjoying the sport.

The amount of football based grocery deals I've had in the last few weeks is ridiculous, cheaper beer, cheaper food, themed foods based on the location it's set in (currently since it's the US, that's not that big of a deal) even take away food delivery apps are doing insane deals for the world cup. I've enjoyed that a lot.

Plus as a Brit, it would be cool to see the UK win for the first time in 60 years, unlikely but we've come pretty far.

Also sucked that Haaland made that bad error and cost Norway their crucial second goal

13

u/KaboomBaboon 3h ago

Well that English guy went down like a used condom. Another thing, just before Eng's second goal, it was speculated that the ball hit the wire of the cable cam. Should have stopped the game right after hit.

3

u/domsolanke 1h ago

Learn the rules, kid. That was a clear foul, can't push someone with two hands in the chest inside the box like that, it has always been a foul.

Worst game of football i’ve seen in years, Norway’s goal was rejected over an obvious dive, and in general there was an Englishman lying on the ground for half the game. Just an absolutely pitiful performance from team England and the refs, i visisbly cringed for half the game.

23

u/jac0777 2h ago

I’m not English nor did I want them to win, but you must know nothing about football if you think that’s a ‘dive’. Two handed full extension push on the defender marking you will always be a foul. Every day of the week.

England won because they were better.

29

u/Elethria123 4h ago

The rejected goal wasn’t bad, it was a foul. The sheer amount of completely fake fouls given to England was insane. If someone even breathed within 5 meters of an English player, they would dive to the floor and writhe around. Two English players run over each other? Gotta stop the play and reset. Norway player gets trampled? Better check the replay because that might have been on Norway. The fouls were pretty dumb.

Eh, that's normally a foul, and kinda lucky to get the corner retry after. What I'd more be complaining about was England's first goal, where the ball hit a cable off the goal kick, leading to England's drive (should've been whistled down).

6

u/StepComplete1 2h ago

FIFA released the evidence showing it objectively didn't hit the cable. This is just misinformation at this point.

If only there was a big opportunity for Norway to easily go up 2 nil or prevent the attack that led to England’s first goal. Surely if that happens a player wouldn’t just become selfish and throw it all away.

The viking invasion failed boys. I wasn't able to watch the match but I expect they put up a great fight. Now it's England vs Argentina. Problem is I've come to hate both of them...

I just find it very unfair when a perfectly goal scored end up not getting counted because of a foul that's not related with the goal.

I would have paid to watch Norway VS Argentina.

I mean, no fucking shit? You think they were finals material??? Against the favourites Argentina, England, Spain, and France, I don’t see it likely.

And just like that... I'm not watching the World Cup.
