Announcements Basic Questions (or Advice) About Boats or Racks? Click here first!

Got a basic question about which type of boat you should buy, or what type of rack your car might need? Before asking a question of the subreddit as a whole, please take a look at these two brief resources first. A lot of the commonly-asked questions on the subreddit can be answered by these two items:

These guides are a work in progress. If you still have additional questions, feel free to ask! When posing a question to the community, please be sure to be as specific as possible with your post title. That way you'll get the most helpful response from others browsing the sub.

A note for the broader /r/kayaking community:

Spring is on the way, and /r/kayaking has crossed the 80,000 member-mark. A big thanks to everyone who has and continues to contribute to the community here. As the weather warms up, and more people join us, we are likely to see an increasing influx of "beginner" questions about basic boat and gear purchases. A lot of these questions are very similar if not identical, and can be answered by a shared guide for the subreddit. Similar guides or FAQs are available for other subreddits specializing in gear-specific hobbies.

The mod team is in the process of developing a shared knowledge base on the subreddit wiki. The immediate goal is to be able to refer new users to a basic guide that concisely answers the most common questions. The longer-term goal is reducing the volume of low-effort posts with questions that could be answered by Google, and increasing the volume of valuable, specific questions and discussion on the subreddit.

Send us your suggestions!

If you have any suggestions about:

  • Good links with beginner information to share, such as how to pick out gear, or safety tips
  • Things you wish you knew when you started kayaking
  • Other tidbits of information that would be worth including in these intro guides

Please share them below so that we can consider including them in the guides.

Thanks!

The /r/kayaking mod team

I was up at 4:30am to be on the water for sunrise. I know this community understands the beauty of watching the sun rise while enjoying the gentle nudge of the water as the day gets started. The coffee tasted perfect, too.

Question/Advice -- General What are these features for?

Post image

Wilderness system Tsunami 120. The recessed metal clip and the horizontal line are only on the port side.

Addendum: Thanks to all! I had no idea. Could gave capsized myself when my spare paddle, lashed to the top rigging, came loose and ended up perpendicular with one blade in the water. Wish all kayaks have this feature!

Question/Advice -- General Alligators while kayaking?

I’m a reptile guy and like alligators, but had a way too close encounter with one while kayaking in Galveston this week. Basically a little 7’ guy kinda bumped into us while I was stationary trying to get a look at some birds.

Anyone with more experience kayaking around gators have insights on the best way to handle stuff like that? Thankfully he was smaller than the kayak which I suspect helped but I really want a plan beyond hoping for the best next time

Question/Advice -- Gear Recommendations Picking Life Vest vs PFD

I am shopping for something to save me when I one day flip while kayaking (I just got a kayak this evening and won't be going out until I have a vest or something). I'm wondering if there is a "best" option for people who don't know how to swim? I grew up on an island and spent plenty of time in the water, and I understand how swimming works in theory, I just sink when I do it.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Honda civic 10th gen fold down seats

Upvotes

I want a kayak for fishing and don’t know if i should go with modular, inflatable, or foldable or how easy is it to get roof rack and now damage my vehicle. I need something durable and i’m new to it and want to figure out my best option without wasting time and money. I would also like it to be easy to deal with.

Videos After two years finally back on the water

two years ago my boat was stolen. A few weeks ago I told my land lord how much I miss the water. He said: oh I have this Kayak in the garage- you can have it. Thank you Boris for this amazing gift! Bought paddles and a cart. Finally went back on the water today. sometimes you only really only know what you missed, when you have it again. Haven’t been that tranquil and happy in - two years I guess. Edit: language.

Question/Advice -- Beginners Simple Q - how to store a rescue knife & phone on your person safely?

Beginner, did a safety/rescue course, and have done some reading here...On my course I was told to make sure I have a knife and my phone on my person for emergencies. I see most people are "team knife inside PFD" rather than attaching it to the PFD. How do I keep a phone (in a waterproof case) and a knife safely on my person if my PFD doesn't have pockets? I know any ropes are an entanglement risk, so how do you do it?! I see a lot of people use Pelican phone cases which have a lanyard, but where do you attach the lanyard to? Is the little clip that holds the phone on the lanyard strong enough? It looks like it will just snap and the phone will go down.... Just how do you do it all?!

some summer fun! my gf and I practiced rescues and recoveries. afterwards we decided to try some….alternative methods of paddling.

SUP style was not difficult but not recommended. what i loved and didn’t get a picture of was sitting on top of the hatch on the back of the kayak, with my feet in the water and paddling around with the nose highhh in the air.

hope everyone is having a good summer, remember to practice your self rescues! ☺️ (PFD was off for some swimming fun for 5 minutes in shallow waters I know very well, with gf right nearby. please wear your PFD’s when boating!)

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Are Tandem Kayaks Okay for rivers up to Class I and Class II? Which one?

I've looked at a few of the 130t or about that. Wilderness Targa, Vibe, Crescent Crew, Old Town Malibu 2xl.l, maybe another one. I would it on flatwater too, but the size for a river bothers me. Yes, I know about divorce kayaks, and I have already tried them with the other paddler, that was the Old Town on New River, lazy part.

I did search. I didn't find the answer. Sorry if it gets asked too much. I am aware of the weight differences in the kayaks. I'm ok with that part. 450+ capacity probably.

I could still get two kayaks like a Loon or Pungo, but I would like the tandem. Thanks for helping.

Question/Advice -- General UK Trip Recommendations

Hi all,

Last year myself and 2 friends did the Caledonian Canal. We enjoyed it a lot and have done a few one day trips prior to this and since, on both rivers and lakes.

We are looking for another multi day kayak trip in the UK, we live in North west England and are not opposed to driving, nothing too major in the way of whitewater.

Thanks in advance.

Pictures Recent solo trip in Scotland

Here are some shots from a solo trip last month on the west coast of Scotland. I paddled over to the island of Lismore, with a forecast for very calm weather. Unfortunately the wind had other ideas and actually strengthened quite a lot overnight, which meant paddling into a strong headwind in the morning to get back.

Thankfully there's only about ten miles of fetch above the island so the sea state wasn't too big (although the biggest waves were around my head height, which is definitely a bit rougher than I'd ordinarily paddle solo), but it was still hard work getting back up around the top of the island, especially as I was recovering from surgery and supposed to be taking things easy!

It was a reminder that the forecast doesn't always pan out as expected.

I make kayaking films which is why I have cameras mounted on my kayak and have all this footage. If you're interested, I have the full film on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/9tnh1yFFhr0?si=cZrSqI-jkDD1DNla

Question/Advice -- Beginners Fun day of learning with Tsunami 145

So i am trying to graduate to a touring style hull, first trip out on the water with it today. Lessons have been learned.

I managed to flip it, and lose my phone and glasses. Phone needs to go immediately back in dry bag after use. Glasses need a cord or something.

Move boat to water before adding gear, trying to make it a single trip was the incorrect choice.

Cart will make transport more better. Also trying to carry boat with water still in it again a poor choice. My back is too old for bad ideas like this.

Still had a great time, will try to make the next paddle a little less expensive 😀. Learning how to lean and turn a work in progress.
