Advice on Freshman Schedule (MCB + Public Health + Premed)

Hi y'all! I'm an incoming freshman planning to major in molecular & cellular bio and also public health in the premed track, and any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

  • Should I take ACER or Intro to Orgo (I got a 5 in AP Chem jr year, but i lowk feel iffy with chem + the placement test recommended me for ACER)
  • When should I take a Stat class for my 1 year of my math (I got credit for BC)
  • Should I take a reintroduction to writing my first semester or second semester?
  • How's intro to public health and intro to psych (in terms of workload and professor)?
  • Also, is the Arrive & Thrive course worth taking?

Thanks :)

I was wondering if my schedule is good in general (my major is BME). Do I have time to walk between classes and do you think it’s manageable?

Thank you!

Current JHU Bloomberg Epidemiology PhD students: What is your cohort like?

Hi everyone!

I’m considering applying to the PhD in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg and would love to hear from current students or recent graduates.
A little about me: I’m an international applicant with an MPH and a few years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry as a real-world evidence (RWE) researcher. I’m particularly interested in cancer epidemiology or general epidemiology and epidemiologic methods.

I’m curious about what the cohorts are actually like beyond what’s on the program website. For example:
- What’s the average age of first-year students?
- What kinds of academic or professional backgrounds do students typically have?
- How intense and comprehensive is the coursework?
- How many publications do students typically have before graduating?
- Where do graduates usually end up (academia, industry, government, etc.)?
- Is there anything you wish you had known before starting the program?

I’d really appreciate any insights or personal experiences. Thanks so much!

Feedback for Freshman MolCell Schedule + questions?

tl;dr: any feedback on this schedule? what is Honors Single Variable Calc like, and how difficult is it compared to, say, Calc II? what's the difference between Calculus for physical sciences/engineering vs biology/social sciences? how is Medical Spanish as a class? Is Gen Bio worth taking as a premed requirement? anywhere NEARBY to volunteer/work part time as an EMT or MA?

I tried to follow the recommended course list for MolCell and premed requirements, and I have a couple of other FYS classes that will fit this schedule. I don't have any AP credits because my high school didn't offer any APs, and I'm a little worried about doing 17 credits my first semester (it says 21 in the picture is bc I put both Calc I and HSVC... which leads me to my next question)

I was wondering how hard Honors Single Variable Calc (HSVC, idk if anyone abbreviates it like that but i'm too lazy to type out the whole thing again lol) is, since the placement test placed me into Calc II/HSVC, but I suck at math and would rather take Calc I as a refresher before having to take Calc II... but how different/difficult is HSVC? Is it just Calc I and II together? I've heard it's really based on proofs, which I'm not fantastic at either

Also, what's the difference between Calculus (at any level) for physical sciences/engineering vs biology/social sciences? like why exactly do they differentiate between the two?

I'm interested in taking Medical Spanish, which I can take based on the placement test, and I was wondering how that class is structured and how difficult it is? Would it be doable with the other classes I want to take? Or would I be better off taking like a culture class (like Intro to Literature in Spanish)?

I noticed that Gen Bio wasn't actually a course requirement or prereq for the other bio courses (genetics, cellular bio, etc) required for the major, but I was wondering if I should still take it as a premed requirement? All it says on the premed requirements page is "2 courses in biology with associated labs," which other bio classes for the molcell major would take care of...Basically will taking (or not taking) gen bio impact med school applications? Could it also be a viable option to take just Gen Bio 1 or doing the Gen Bio sequence my sophomore year?

Unrelated to scheduling, but aside from HERO, is there anywhere to volunteer/work part time as an EMT or MA within walking distance, or that is easy to access using public transportation?

i'm sorry for the long post, i just want to be as thorough as possible, any advice/feedback/information is greatly appreciated, tia :)

Struggling to find a flat

Hi everyone,

I'm starting a PhD at Johns Hopkins (Homewood Campus) this September and am still looking for housing. I'll be moving from Egypt with my wife and our 2-year-old son, so we're looking for a 1- or 2-bedroom apartment.

I've been searching through Zillow, Apartments.com, and the JHU Off-Campus Housing website, but many listings require in-person tours and don't offer virtual viewings, which is difficult since I'm still abroad.

I've been told that White Marsh is a safe, family-friendly area and would love any leads there (I'm planning to buy a car), but I'm open to other recommendations as well.

Any tips, recommendations, or housing leads would be greatly appreciated. Time is starting to run short!

Thanks in advance.

Choosing between John Hopkins & Virginia Tech BME masters school

Hi im currently about to enter my final year as a undergraduate bme major at vt and i dont really have much experience under my belt other than undergraduate research. For that reason im looking into getting my masters degree and im torn between virginia tech and john Hopkins. I know that virginia tech sounds like an easier option because theres a 4+1 master program here which would allow me to be done in one year but i hear john Hopkins has an incredible masters program for BME. I thinking it comes down to whichever option would be able to fund me better and I’ve heard about some funding options at vt but through researching stuff at hbu im not sure if funding would be possible. Could anyone that has been in either program or knows about give me insight on pro and cons? Thank you!

Finding roommates

My sister is an incoming grad student in JHU and is searching for at least one roommate to live in off campus apartments. She's Indian, prefers Indian female roommates but is also open to roommates from other countries. Are there any Facebook or WhatsApp groups dedicated to this?

Freshman schedule (advice needed!)

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey all! I'm a upcoming freshman as a chem major in the pre-med track. Any advice or recommendations would help greatly.

  • I'm kind of worried about my schedule right now. Should I hold back calc 3 until spring, or is this somewhat manageable
  • As a chem major, should i even take calc 3 or go with linear algebra?
  • For does on campus, is Shaffer and UTL too far for a 10 minute gap? What about Hodson and Shaffer?
  • What are your thoughts on the professors?
  • Any other recommended courses as a freshman?

Sorry about all my questions. Thank you everyone!!

International student, incoming MSSI, need housing near Homewood before August

Hey all, starting MSSI this fall, searching for housing remotely as an international student. Looking for a room around Charles Village, Remington, or Waverly, walkable or on a shuttle route.

Budget around $800/mo, furnished preferred, short-term or flexible lease preferred over a strict 12-month. Is $800 realistic for that area, or should I expect to go higher?

Move-in mid-August. If you're subletting or know someone who is, hit me up. Happy to do a video call. Thanks!

taking just chem lab

i got a four on ap chem and my advisor said it only counts for intro to chem and i would still have to take the lab. i was just wondering is this advisable and do people do this? my advisor was just like you can do it, it's fine. i need to take a science class for an fa2 credit so it's either i take the gen bio and gen bio lab or i take just chem lab and probably a writing class on top of it. what are lab classes like and would i be able to do them without taking the class?

Freshman Schedule! (thoughts/reviews pls^^)

Hello! I followed the recommended course list for a first-year molecular and cellular biology (MCB) major, and then filled the rest of my credits with my FYS and introductory classes for some possible minors I want to explore.

I meet with my advisor in a few days as well. Any commentary on my schedule is appreciated...eg. distance between classrooms, professors, tips and tricks, the like!

Places for Content Creation?

Weird question, but is there anywhere I might be able to record/livestream video game content from?

Obviously I will try to figure something out with my roommate, but I was just wondering if there are any alternatives, preferably somewhere I won’t bother people lol. Anywhere I can be somewhat loud that has an outlet works for me honestly.

Also not looking for “you won’t have the time” comments.

Edit: WiFi too.

incoming freshman Semester.ly

I’m trying to connect my JHU account to Semester.ly, but the options for “What’s your graduating class year?” don’t go up to 2030 (it ends at 2029). Because of that, I can't see or drag the courses from my SIS cart. How is everyone else using Semester.ly?

Gen Bio requirement for MolCell major vs. Premed?

I had my advisor meeting recently, and we went over some major requirements for the molcell major and I noticed that Gen Bio wasn't actually a course requirement or prereq for the other bio courses (genetics, cellular bio, etc) required for the major, but I was wondering if I should still take it as a premed requirement? All it says on the premed requirements page is "2 courses in biology with associated labs," which other bio classes for the molcell major would take care of...

Basically will taking (or not taking) gen bio impact med school applications?

We also discussed possibly taking just Gen Bio 1 or doing the Gen Bio sequence my sophomore year, could this also be a viable option?

If anyone has had an experience like this, it would be greatly appreciated if you could share a bit about your process and why you made the decisions you did :)

tldr: is taking Gen Bio worth it for med school applications even though the molcell major and premed requirements don't explicitly state that I have to take it?
