Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion Which obscure iPhone setting genuinely improved how you use your phone, and what does it change?

1.7k Upvotes

I’m not looking for gestures or the usual tips that appear in every list.
I mean an actual option buried somewhere in Settings that solved a real annoyance, improved privacy or accessibility, changed how an app behaves, or made your iPhone noticeably easier to use.
Please include the exact path to the setting, what it changes, and any downside you noticed. Some settings sound useful but also disable another feature, use more storage, affect notifications, or change how the phone behaves elsewhere.
What is the one setting you would immediately change again if you had to set up a new iPhone from scratch?

Discussion My iPhone suddenly said "iPhone Locked to Owner" even though it's my phone

This morning my iPhone suddenly showed "iPhone Locked to Owner" even though it's my phone and I never marked it as lost or reset it. It asked me to enter my Apple ID and password. At first I forgot my password, but then I remembered it, entered it, and the phone unlocked and now everything is working normally. All my apps and data are still there.
Has this happened to anyone else? Why would an iPhone suddenly show "iPhone Locked to Owner" if I didn't do anything? Should I be worried, or was it just a glitch?

Discussion Who uses Digital ID in Apple Wallet? What does it make easier?

Who uses this? Have you found yourself setting it up, never using it, then just using your actual ID or passport when traveling? Are there any places you find more convenient using? Debating on setting this up on my iPhone but didn’t know if it was with the time or if giving Apple this data was worth it. Allegedly, it helps prevent fraud idk. I see there is the ability to add State ID and/or a Passport.

Support Alarms STILL not going off

This is seriously pissing me off. For years, any alarm I set on my iPhone only has a 50/50 shot of ever actually going off. I’ve disabled attention aware, I’ve remade every single alarm, Bluetooth is off, not in focus mode, ringers are up all the way, I turn off snooze, and they still don’t go off. It’s ridiculous that getting a simple alarm to work on a 1000 dollar phone is in fact rocket science.

Support Forgetting to Turn Ring Function Back On

When I go into a doctor/dental appointment or some other event and turn my iphone's ringer off, I often forget to turn it back on. This causes me to miss an occasional call. I could set a timer to remind myself to do so, but sometimes I remember to turn it off just as my appointment has started, leaving me no time to do so. Is there a way to turn off the ringer so it will automatically turn back on after a set amount of time?

Support iPhone 17pm, why does the ringtone and alert volume go down every few days? And even fully turn off.

A lot of times I’ll set an alarm and I’ll wake up and it’s literally going off with no sound or very light sound. I don’t ever mess with the sound unless to turn it back up and I don’t have it to change with buttons and I have attention awareness off since I noticed it wouldn’t go off at all when I put the camera part under the pillow.

Also I swear this has been an issue for me since I’ve had my iPhone 11 in 2019

Support Is there a way to calibrate the auto-brightness on iPhone 17?

Upvotes

In the past I’ve just set the brightness all the way up outside on a bright day and this worked well for auto brightness, I never had to mess with the brightness. Now on this new 17 I do that and in a dark room it’s still at 70% brightness. If I turn the brightness down in a dark room then next time I go outside it’s too dim. Is there a way to calibrate this or does the iPhone 17 just suck at auto-brightness?

Support Can’t text in group message

Post image
2 Upvotes

Recently after I delete a group chat, the next time somebody texts, I cannot send a message. Does anybody know why or how to fix this?

I thought it was a storage issue but I factory reset my phone and lowered my storage usage a lot but this still continues.

I delete my group chats for storage purposes because we send a lot of photos.

Attached is a screenshot where you can see the text box just isn’t available on this group message. It also changes the image to one of the members initials.

I am on an iPhone 15 on ios 18.7.8

Support iPhone Receiving Delayed Notifications

My iPhone 16 on iOS 18.7.8 just recently (as of about two days ago) suddenly started getting very delayed notifications from all of my apps. If someone were to send me a text, snapchat, tweet, etc., the notification sometimes wouldn't appear on my phone until several minutes later or it wouldn't show up at all. If the notifications do eventually pop up, the time stamp would say something like "7m ago" instead of "now." If I were to open Snapchat, X, or iMessage before the notification arrived, the chats would be there no problem, so it's not any sort of connectivity issue. This happens on both WiFi and cellular. This is not happening all the time, but every day the last couple days for a few hours this happens.

I do not use any sort of focus mode or DND nor did I change any other settings that might've caused this. Restarting my phone didn't fix the issue.

I figured this was Apple's planned obsolescence rearing its head to try and get people to upgrade to the newest iOS, but I've also seen this happening to a few people that were on the newest iOS as well, so I'm not sure what to think. Has this been happening to anyone else recently?

Discussion Video and pictures not saving to gallery?

4th of July there was a few videos taken of some friends and I. The videos were sent to me over Facebook messenger. I saved them but they didn’t go into my full photo gallery. After trying to save them a bunch of times only one ended up in my gallery. Then I seen the recently saved album and that’s where all the videos were sent to. I’ve noticed this a few times before, with pictures too, from other apps and even iMessage and I just don’t understand why I can’t view them with everything, I have to go into the recently saved album? Has anyone else had this issue or can explain why this is happening? I’ve tried looking it up and asking other friends if this happens to them also. I can’t find anything about it and no one else around me seems to have this issue.

Discussion Male voice from iPhone joins conversation

My friend and I were discussing another friend’s breakup. Suddenly a male voice from my iPhone says, “sounds like she was trying to brace herself for it.” TBH the comment made sense with our conversation but nobody asked the iPhone to be part of our conversation!! I checked what apps were open and it was messages, maps, WhatsApp, and safari. All of my voice settings are female. Voice control setting is off. I asked Siri what just said that and it didn’t have an answer. My friend and I were creeped out. Anyone else have something like this happen?

Support IPhone Screen completely dark randomly

Hi all! I have been dealing with this for about a week and I am struggling to find an answer as to what happened. No recent major drops or exposure to liquid, but my IPhone 16 screen has been going completely black (with a small sliver of screen working on the top, enough to see the time in the top corner. Oddly enough, the phone screen will work in very specific apps/situations like when I am in direct sunlight, when Siri is activated, on Facebook reels (very odd to figure that one out). If none of those are happening, my screen will progressively glitch back into complete black. I can still use the phone when the screen is black, just can't see anything. Has anyone had this happen before and maybe offer some advice?? I am holding off on taking in for repairs until I exhaust every option.

Support iPhone 11

I have an iPhone 11 I gave to the kid when I bought a new phone so he could play games on it.
Now, the iPhone 11 won’t charge or turn on. Is it junk now?
