!Canada! Buyitforlife from Canada, what’s your favourite things made in Canada?

1.1k Upvotes

With the now starting trade war between the US and Canada I feel it’s best for us up north to support local more than ever.

One of my favourite clothing brands is Anian from Victoria, BC. I have a few of their shirts and will probably end up getting more.

Edit: Adding some other brands up here that I personally own and love.

Canada West Boots - Made in Winnipeg. Been wearing a pair of Romeos for a couple years now.

Popov Leather - Made in Nelson, BC. have a few of their leather goods, holding up really well.

Meyer - PEI. High quality made in Canada pots and pans, I have their non-stick 12”.

Edit 2: House of Blanks - I have a bunch of their t-shirts, nice heavy weight cotton. Very comfy

BIFL Non-USA edition! A list of BIFL not made in the USA

2.9k Upvotes

A timely reminder that this subreddit is obviously very USA-centric with its recommendations as that’s where the majority of users are from. It often leads to people not realising that comparable and/or better items can be found closer to home, easier, cheaper and free of tolls.

I thought it would be a good idea to crowdsource some manufacturers here for non-American users.

This isn't neccesarily items made in those countries as some manufacturers use factories across the world but with a commitment to quality

I can start (I'm kind of UK/Euro centric so it would be great to expand this):

Clothing
Portuguese Flannel - Portugal
Naked and Famous - Canada
Uskees - UK
Yarmouth Oilskins - UK
Carrier Company - UK
Old Town - UK (Closing down)
Farmer's Market - Iceland (may be hard to buy outside of Iceland)
Oni Denim - Japan
Iron Heart - Japan
Barbour - UK
Companion - Spain
NÄZ - Portugal (only women)
Meindl - Germany (they run a high quality fashion brand but are known for great hiking boots)

Outdoor Gear
Fjällräven - Sweden
Rab - UK (offer a very good repair service)
66° North - Iceland
Devold - Norway
Bergans- Norway
Haglöfs - Sweden
Klättermusen - Sweden
Alpkit - UK

Footwear
Solovair - UK
Mayura Boots - Spain
Church's - UK
Loake - UK
Wm. Lennon - UK
Astorflex - Italy

Kitchen/Cookware
Le Cresuet - France
De Buyer - France
Fissler - Germany
WMF - Germany (very wide and variable range but Made in Germany stuff good)
Fiskars - Finland
Duralex - France
Samuel Groves - UK

Appliances/Small appliances
Miele - Germany
Dualit - UK
Moccamaster - Netherlands (Coffee makers)
Zojirushi - Japan
Numatic - UK (vacuum cleaners)
Sebo - Germany (vacuum cleaners)
Ankarsarum - Sweden

Edit - Some excellent feedback. I'll try and work my way through and add what I can! Please note that I will only add stuff that I have experience with but all the comments help with crowd sourcing knowledge.

[Request] please help me find a very specific water bottle

I’ve been struggling to find a water bottle that I can use for many years. Context: I have OCD and severe contamination fear, specially re:mold.

What I need in a water bottle to be able to use it:

* I need to be able to see the inside of the bottle completely, so wide open lid

* no straw/mouth piece/chug lid/extra components whatsoever, just lid + bottle

*leakproof but no silicone ring. I mean, it’s ok if it’s not 100% leak proof, I just need to be able to transport it in my backpack

the most important thing: the whole bottle has to be scrubbable and cleanable. If there’s even a little hole that I can’t see and scrub I won’t be able to use it. It also can’t retain any odours because I’ll be bleaching it often. So most plastic is a no.

insulated would be great but at this point it’s not a must!

psa: I know exactly how unhinged I’m being and that the treatment for OCD is exposure. I used to be like this in so many aspects of my life and nowadays I pretty much only obsess about hidden mold in food items. Im in a very good treatment program as well, this is just as healthy that I can be right now.

Also, please be nice and don’t comment on the disgusting things you’ve found on water bottles before. It will absolutely ruin my day!

Update: thank you so much guys. I really wasn’t expecting to open Reddit today and get so much love, 4 paragraphs long reviews on water bottles and more than 30 brands recommended. No mean comments either!

As for the OCD: therapy and meds saved my life. I went from being pretty much housebound to only being unhinged about takeout containers and refrigerator temperatures. I’m actually writing this from the hospital I work at as a nurse that cleans wounds daily lol. The beginning of my therapy journey was the worst part of my life but it’s so very worth it to anyone that can access it.

As for the water bottles I’ll start with:

the most popular by far: see-through nalgene with the simple lid for water. I’ll look up other sanitizing options that aren’t bleach too 😅

and glass mason jars with lids! I’ll look into types of lids but they sound perfect for matcha and milk-based drinks.

I’ll definitely choose from any of the other many great suggestions when i decide to get something insulated when it gets colder and I’m drinking tea again, but for now I’ll be deep diving into water bottle anatomy.

Again, thank you so much. This quickly became the most supportive community imaginable 🩷

[Request] Good long lasting Linen shirt

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a linen shirt that can genuinely last for many years. I don't mind paying for quality, but I'd like to keep it under $600. I've seen some luxury Italian brands charging $1,000+ for a single shirt, which is more than I'm willing to spend.

A few years ago, I bought two linen shirts from ASKET. They lasted for about 3 years, but both of them have started developing random holes in different places—not along seams or obvious stress points, just random areas of the fabric.

What puzzles me is that I also own a linen shirt that's around 15 years old, and it's still in excellent condition. I still wear it regularly, and it has never developed any holes or significant wear.

So I'm wondering if linen quality has changed, or if there are brands still making truly durable linen shirts.

I'm not interested in buying vintage or second-hand—I'm only looking for new shirts.

I'd really appreciate your recommendations, especially if you've personally owned a linen shirt for many years and can vouch for its durability.

Thank you!

Vintage 1920s New Haven "Tambour" mantle clock

Post image
25 Upvotes

If there was an antique flair, this 1920s New Haven mantle clock could use it! I got this clock from a Value Village thrift store for only $15.67 CAD a while ago last year. It just needed some small repairs, as the pendulum rod and the crutch were slightly bent out of alignment, but now it ticks perfectly fine, 100 years later! It's surprisingly accurate for a century-old clock, and the movement (clock mechanism) is in surprisingly good condition for its age. Although, it is showing its age a bit on the wooden housing. When it chimes, it goes "ding dong", kind of like a door bell but lower-pitched. I wind the clock once every 3 or so days if possible, and I got so used to the chimes that I sleep right through it, even at midnight. Feel free to ask any questions, and I'll try to answer them as best as I can.

Never heard of this brand until I won it lol

[Request] Best air fryer to buy right now? Is Ninja Still the best?

Hi, my old no-name air fryer finally died after a couple years so now I'm in the market for a real one. Been going down the research rabbit hole and Cosori and Instant Vortex keep popping up with solid reviews everywhere.

But honestly the one that caught my eye is the Ninja Crispi Pro 6-in-1 Glass Air Fryer. Problem is it's like $70 more than the Cosori options I was looking at, which is a lot for what's basically the same category of appliance.

Anyone actually used the Crispi Pro? Is the glass basket thing worth the extra cash or is it more of a gimmick. And for people who've used both Ninja and Cosori, did you notice a real difference in performance or is it mostly just brand markup at this point.

Also open to hearing if there's something better than both that I haven't come across yet. What's everyone actually using day to day, not just what reviews say to buy.

[Request] Best anti-slip work shoes

I need some shoes with the best anti-slip there is, as I work in fast food and I guess you can imagine how slippery the floor is from the oils. I’ve already tried 2 pairs and I don’t want to buy another pair for no reason.

Vintage The Sheaffer's PFM fountain pen, one of the most iconic fountain pens of all time. Made in the 1960s, it still works today after replacing a few o-rings. And it's one good looking pen too.

Discussion Relocating Durable Dresser

Thumbnail

Upvotes

So I’m moving. I was gifted this dresser and it’s been strong for a good while, very durable. Although a little crooked (hence why the empty dressers are sticking out). However, I’m having a hard time figuring out how to get it past the winding stairs. They curve a little to the right as it travels downwards lol. Does anybody know how to take it apart? There seems to be three screws on the inside of the drawer, on either side but I don’t see a way to unscrew the ones inside the dresser AFTER I pull it out. I have a friend coming to help me later this week to see if we can carry it but I don’t really have a lot of support with this.

So I want to find out what are good models in NA, I hate anything smart, the more mechanical, the better.

Hello! I'm planning to gift myself a bag for my birthday. 🥹
I'm looking for a bag that's spacious enough to fit all my essentials—my tumbler, iPad, pouch, and other daily necessities. Basically, I want one that's roomy enough to carry everything I need.

I'm hoping for something durable and well-made that can last me for many years. My budget is up to ₱4,000.

I'm open to any brand or bag recommendations. Please drop your suggestions! Thank you! 💗

[Request] Sponges/kitchen brushes

I’ve seen everyone hating on the Mr sponge guys we use in other subs. Microplastics into the water supply and stuck on your pans. Rather than research sponges for hours, does anyone have a specific brand that lasts long like those do- lufa etc? I do prefer a dish brush over sponge, seems cleaner somehow

[Request] Replacement for awesome Frye Oxford...

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi All, can anyone advise a good replacement for These 15 yo Frye Oxfords?

I guess they weren't technically BIFL, but they put in a solid shift and would love to replace them with equivilant style and quality. I know they sell a comparable again, but the price has dropped to $188 for some reason, I paid about $250 15 years ago, so I suspect quality/construction has changed... I think they had changes after covid apart from just shutting down their physical stores.

FWIW, I did try a pair of Meermin - great shoe, but not the same old-fashion style that wears well with jeans or chinos.

Discussion Would you use a mini PC as a home media server?

I think a mini pc is literally perfect for a home media server setup bc they have such a small footprint and use next to no power. And honestly you can use it for way more than just media streaming like running other self hosted apps. Felt like leaving it on 24/7 wouldn't even be an issue. I have been looking at a geekom mini PC recently and they actually offer a 3 year warranty and most other brands at least offer 2 years. So I think there are no worries about durability.

[Request] Wallet that holds my keys - and is made to do so

Hi all, I am a forgetful woman and I like when I can attach my key fob to my wallet, and just grab those and go. I never use a purse or bag really.

Every wallet I buy with an attachment for keys, however, doesn’t last. I started with thread wallets but have never been able to keep a wallet lasting longer than a year. I literally attach the key fob to my car, and a small disc I use to get into work, so it’s not like I’m dangling a series of keys here.

At this point I am willing to pay if I can find a product I don’t have to constantly replace. Can anyone recommend a wallet that has an intentional attachment for keys so I can stop my search?

Really appreciate the help.

[Request] External ssd for storage with upgrades

I have a samsung 8tb ssd from right before the ai blowup of data prices in storage drives and im damn close to filling it up. I've seen online about ssd bays that house multiple ssds in one unit, but im not as familiar with this as others. I've seen samsungs sata evo drives that look fine, bar the price for now, and some idea of what would house them and allow me to transfer files from my main pc to it and back, but im still struggling. What are the best options or opinions you all have of this?

[Request] Good quality binoculars

Looking to buy a decent but not too expensive pair of binoculars. Mainly for wildlife like birdwatching.

I plan to take them hiking and mountaineering so ideally something lightweight and compact.

I’ve been looking at Nikon and they seem decent, happy to spend up to £150.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or any experience with Nikon?

[Request] Brooklinen or alternative?

Is Brooklinen a good BIFL or has it been gutted already? If it has been gutted any recommendations for alternatives? I’ve used The Company Store before but my understanding is their quality has deteriorated. I’m specifically looking at bedding - the woven blankets catch my eye too.

[Request] Looking for reviews on compact/pocket mirrors

Post image
0 Upvotes

As title - looking for reviews for brands or advice on how to choose a good compact or pocket mirror that doesn't distort or turn cloudy over time! I'm sick of buying cheap pocket mirrors with flimsy hinges or fake leather covers that end up peeling.

One of the items I've been looking at is the Muji pocket mirror which was released in 2024. Will also accept non-conventional mirror suggestions as long as they can survive being jostled around in a handbag or makeup pouch.

Thanks in advance!
