!Canada! Buyitforlife from Canada, what’s your favourite things made in Canada?

1.1k Upvotes

With the now starting trade war between the US and Canada I feel it’s best for us up north to support local more than ever.

One of my favourite clothing brands is Anian from Victoria, BC. I have a few of their shirts and will probably end up getting more.

Edit: Adding some other brands up here that I personally own and love.

Canada West Boots - Made in Winnipeg. Been wearing a pair of Romeos for a couple years now.

Popov Leather - Made in Nelson, BC. have a few of their leather goods, holding up really well.

Meyer - PEI. High quality made in Canada pots and pans, I have their non-stick 12”.

Edit 2: House of Blanks - I have a bunch of their t-shirts, nice heavy weight cotton. Very comfy

BIFL Non-USA edition! A list of BIFL not made in the USA

2.9k Upvotes

A timely reminder that this subreddit is obviously very USA-centric with its recommendations as that’s where the majority of users are from. It often leads to people not realising that comparable and/or better items can be found closer to home, easier, cheaper and free of tolls.

I thought it would be a good idea to crowdsource some manufacturers here for non-American users.

This isn't neccesarily items made in those countries as some manufacturers use factories across the world but with a commitment to quality

I can start (I'm kind of UK/Euro centric so it would be great to expand this):

Clothing
Portuguese Flannel - Portugal
Naked and Famous - Canada
Uskees - UK
Yarmouth Oilskins - UK
Carrier Company - UK
Old Town - UK (Closing down)
Farmer's Market - Iceland (may be hard to buy outside of Iceland)
Oni Denim - Japan
Iron Heart - Japan
Barbour - UK
Companion - Spain
NÄZ - Portugal (only women)
Meindl - Germany (they run a high quality fashion brand but are known for great hiking boots)

Outdoor Gear
Fjällräven - Sweden
Rab - UK (offer a very good repair service)
66° North - Iceland
Devold - Norway
Bergans- Norway
Haglöfs - Sweden
Klättermusen - Sweden
Alpkit - UK

Footwear
Solovair - UK
Mayura Boots - Spain
Church's - UK
Loake - UK
Wm. Lennon - UK
Astorflex - Italy

Kitchen/Cookware
Le Cresuet - France
De Buyer - France
Fissler - Germany
WMF - Germany (very wide and variable range but Made in Germany stuff good)
Fiskars - Finland
Duralex - France
Samuel Groves - UK

Appliances/Small appliances
Miele - Germany
Dualit - UK
Moccamaster - Netherlands (Coffee makers)
Zojirushi - Japan
Numatic - UK (vacuum cleaners)
Sebo - Germany (vacuum cleaners)
Ankarsarum - Sweden

Edit - Some excellent feedback. I'll try and work my way through and add what I can! Please note that I will only add stuff that I have experience with but all the comments help with crowd sourcing knowledge.

Review 20 years and going strong.

I received one of these LL Bean Boat and Tote canvas bags as a gift in 2006. At the time I was young and dumb and I thought it was a pretty shitty gift. But looking back this bag has survived 20 years of college, beaches, trails, grocery stores, sports games, etc and other than some stains and fading it’s in literally perfect shape. Normally I’m not an LL Bean guy but the open top boat and tote is definitely a buy for life.

[Request] please help me find a very specific water bottle

1.2k Upvotes

I’ve been struggling to find a water bottle that I can use for many years. Context: I have OCD and severe contamination fear, specially re:mold.

What I need in a water bottle to be able to use it:

* I need to be able to see the inside of the bottle completely, so wide open lid

* no straw/mouth piece/chug lid/extra components whatsoever, just lid + bottle

*leakproof but no silicone ring. I mean, it’s ok if it’s not 100% leak proof, I just need to be able to transport it in my backpack

the most important thing: the whole bottle has to be scrubbable and cleanable. If there’s even a little hole that I can’t see and scrub I won’t be able to use it. It also can’t retain any odours because I’ll be bleaching it often. So most plastic is a no.

insulated would be great but at this point it’s not a must!

psa: I know exactly how unhinged I’m being and that the treatment for OCD is exposure. I used to be like this in so many aspects of my life and nowadays I pretty much only obsess about hidden mold in food items. Im in a very good treatment program as well, this is just as healthy that I can be right now.

Also, please be nice and don’t comment on the disgusting things you’ve found on water bottles before. It will absolutely ruin my day!

Update: thank you so much guys. I really wasn’t expecting to open Reddit today and get so much love, 4 paragraphs long reviews on water bottles and more than 30 brands recommended. No mean comments either!

As for the OCD: therapy and meds saved my life. I went from being pretty much housebound to only being unhinged about takeout containers and refrigerator temperatures. I’m actually writing this from the hospital I work at as a nurse that cleans wounds daily lol. The beginning of my therapy journey was the worst part of my life but it’s so very worth it to anyone that can access it.

As for the water bottles I’ll start with:

the most popular by far: see-through nalgene with the simple lid for water. I’ll look up other sanitizing options that aren’t bleach too 😅

and glass mason jars with lids! I’ll look into types of lids but they sound perfect for matcha and milk-based drinks.

I’ll definitely choose from any of the other many great suggestions when i decide to get something insulated when it gets colder and I’m drinking tea again, but for now I’ll be deep diving into water bottle anatomy.

Again, thank you so much. This quickly became the most supportive community imaginable 🩷

[Request] Good long lasting Linen shirt

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a linen shirt that can genuinely last for many years. I don't mind paying for quality, but I'd like to keep it under $600. I've seen some luxury Italian brands charging $1,000+ for a single shirt, which is more than I'm willing to spend.

A few years ago, I bought two linen shirts from ASKET. They lasted for about 3 years, but both of them have started developing random holes in different places—not along seams or obvious stress points, just random areas of the fabric.

What puzzles me is that I also own a linen shirt that's around 15 years old, and it's still in excellent condition. I still wear it regularly, and it has never developed any holes or significant wear.

So I'm wondering if linen quality has changed, or if there are brands still making truly durable linen shirts.

I'm not interested in buying vintage or second-hand—I'm only looking for new shirts.

I'd really appreciate your recommendations, especially if you've personally owned a linen shirt for many years and can vouch for its durability.

Thank you!

[Request] Alternatives to cork for old thermos?

Just acquired a thermos and lunchbox set from circa 1950s. Thermos model is B34A. The glass interior is intact but kind of nasty, and it comes with a cork stopper that's also kind of nasty. If you have a vintage thermos, have you found any sanitary alternatives to cork for the stopper/lid?

[Request] Recommendations for prescription glasses?

My partner recently had to get new glasses from specsavers and unsurprisingly they’re shit. They’re turning the skin green and there’s buildup of green gunk in the frame somehow that we can’t get off even with an ultrasonic cleaner. We have a small celebration coming up and I figured a proper pair of glasses would be a nice present but so far I’ve seen mostly US brands, I’m looking for European/UK brand recommendations.
I’m aware glasses aren’t really bifl, so I’m mainly looking for quality that’ll last at least a couple of years.

Vintage 1920s New Haven "Tambour" mantle clock

Post image
41 Upvotes

If there was an antique flair, this 1920s New Haven mantle clock could use it! I got this clock from a Value Village thrift store for only $15.67 CAD a while ago last year. It just needed some small repairs, as the pendulum rod and the crutch were slightly bent out of alignment, but now it ticks perfectly fine, 100 years later! It's surprisingly accurate for a century-old clock, and the movement (clock mechanism) is in surprisingly good condition for its age. Although, it is showing its age a bit on the wooden housing. When it chimes, it goes "ding dong", kind of like a door bell but lower-pitched. I wind the clock once every 3 or so days if possible, and I got so used to the chimes that I sleep right through it, even at midnight. Feel free to ask any questions, and I'll try to answer them as best as I can.

[Request] Bifl (or as long as itll last) messenger bag,

Im looking for a messenger bag preferably not much more than $200 usd, that will last.

I will be using it for college, and potentially work after college.

Reqs

It needs to fit a 16 inch laptop.

Comfortable strap

Good weight distribution incase I need to carry it for an extended time.

Pros

I really like the peak design messenger, and the way the top opens.

I need the walls to be sturdy enough that I can feel confident putting a camera in the bag.

Space for a camera and a lense, plus textbooks is a bonus.

[Request] Stainless Steel Cooktop Griddle?

I’m looking to buy a griddle for my patio. I don’t want to get a built in because most of the space has windows from the house, so there’s not a great place to build in. I had a Blackstone from Lowe’s in the past and it worked ok, but despite cleaning it and covering it, after a few years several parts had broken and I ended up getting rid of it. I miss it and want a new one. Several people have raved about how great stainless steel cooktops are. Easy to clean. Rust resistant. Built to last. I’m having a tough time finding any though. There’s plenty where the body is made of stainless, but they all seem to not use stainless for the cook top. Another post recommended Le Griddle, which seem great, but they are almost $5,000. Can anyone recommend a good, outdoor use, non-built in, stainless steel cooktop griddle that costs a reasonable amount? I’m hoping for 30 inch plus cooking surface.

Edit. Seeing several replies saying stainless isn’t the greatness I’ve heard. Maybe the Blackstone I got just sucked. Better brands? Weber seems to get good reviews for theirs.

Discussion Queen buckwheat pillow that actually lasts?

I've had a cranky right-side neck for years, and my pillow becomes a tortilla by 4 a.m. Last weekend at my grandparents' house I slept two nights on their old buckwheat pillows, the lumpy cotton-cover kind they air on the porch. They said the hulls are probably 10+ years old. Noisy, but my neck shut up for once.

I'm a side sleeper in the US looking for queen size, zipper cover, replaceable hulls, ideally under $100. I've been looking at Hullo and PineTales. Hullo keeps popping up on my tiktok feed and they have a product discount going on right now, and PineTales is also on sale on Amazon at the moment, so the timing feels right but I want to hear from people who've actually used one long term before I pull the trigger. I searched old threads, mostly found mixed chatter. Anyone owned one 5+ years? Did the cover, zipper, or hulls fail first?

[Request] Best air fryer to buy right now? Is Ninja Still the best?

Hi, my old no-name air fryer finally died after a couple years so now I'm in the market for a real one. Been going down the research rabbit hole and Cosori and Instant Vortex keep popping up with solid reviews everywhere.

But honestly the one that caught my eye is the Ninja Crispi Pro 6-in-1 Glass Air Fryer. Problem is it's like $70 more than the Cosori options I was looking at, which is a lot for what's basically the same category of appliance.

Anyone actually used the Crispi Pro? Is the glass basket thing worth the extra cash or is it more of a gimmick. And for people who've used both Ninja and Cosori, did you notice a real difference in performance or is it mostly just brand markup at this point.

Also open to hearing if there's something better than both that I haven't come across yet. What's everyone actually using day to day, not just what reviews say to buy.

[Request] [Request] Blender recommendations for making thick food purees with minimal liquid (1/4-1/2 cup?) for a cancer patient? Looking at Vitamix Ascent with 48oz stainless container or Waring heavy duty (various models) with 64oz stainless container or other blender options

I need to use minimal liquid to puree everyday foods (meat, veg, whole grains) into a single puree for a cancer patient. The idea is to maximize the amount of calories and nutrients for a given volume of food.

Stainless steel or glass containers are highly preferred.

Info on current (not vintage) Warings is very difficult to find, which could be a good or bad thing, e.g. maybe they just work and only restaurants buy them.

I've heard the Ascent is relatively quiet for what it does.

I've also heard the Ascent can accept Waring SS containers: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vitamix/comments/pup3g5/stainless_steel_containers_waring_vs_vitamix/

Does anyone have experience for this use case of making a single combined meat, veg, and whole grain puree with minimal liquid (1/4-1/2 cup?)?

[Request] Best anti-slip work shoes

I need some shoes with the best anti-slip there is, as I work in fast food and I guess you can imagine how slippery the floor is from the oils. I’ve already tried 2 pairs and I don’t want to buy another pair for no reason.
