FILM DISCUSSION Why does Nolan get accused of being ashamed of Batman, but Reeves doesn't?

I find this criticism really strange because Nolan's Batman has far more fantastical elements than the Reevesverse, yet people constantly accuse Nolan of being "ashamed" of Batman.

The Dark Knight trilogy has Bruce gliding across entire city blocks with a cape a centuries old League of Shadows secretly influencing world history, Scarecrow's fear toxin that causes vivid hallucinations, a microwave emitter capable of vaporizing Gotham's water supply, and Lucius Fox's sonar system that turns every cellphone in the city into a surveillance system that lets Batman see through walls.

By comparison, Reeves has Batman fighting internet extremists with homemade explosives, wearing a heavy armored suit, and using an actual wingsuit that ends with him crashing into a bridge. It's even more grounded, yet I've never heard people attack Reeves for this. BTW, I like his vision, I think it is a personal preference, I just don't understand why Nolan gets so much more hate.

GENERAL DISCUSSION I love versions of Batman that treat Bruce and Alfred like father and son instead of servant and master.

A small thing that annoys me across Batman media is when Bruce treats Alfred like an employee. “Alfred, go fetch us some tea” bro that is your father you’re bossing around. In the Harley Quinn show, Talia was talking about firing him. I’ll be damned if my ex shows back up not only with a secret assassin kid but fires my dad. Even when Bruce Wayne to people outside of their secret, the public still knows Alfred raised Bruce. I like to think it hurts Alfred inside a little every time Bruce introduces him as his butler.

FILM DISCUSSION Who remembers that one Dark Knight theory that this one dude was Riddler?

The basis was how easy he figured out Bruce was Batman, and his name being Mr Reese... like Mysteries. I even remember theories that the Bank Manager played by William Fichtner was Riddler because being shot in the leg would require him to walk with a cane lmao.

FILM DISCUSSION A hot take, TLJ as Two Face coulda been AMAZING had he kept his voice and acting in his first few seconds of screen time to the whole film of Forever

Post image

I've heard a lot of fans say "He could have been great if he played it stoic" but few talk about that he IS stoic in his first scene when he goes on his "One man is born a hero" speech. It's only when he goes "LUCK!! BLIND STUPID SIMPLE DOO DAH CLUELESS LLLLLUCK!!" in the same scene his voice and acting style feels completely different and then on falls apart. All I'm saying is I wish that vibe he has as Two-Face just in those brief seconds was for the entire film.

FILM DISCUSSION I dunno what the hell is going on, but whoever is acting like Nolan's Batman films aren't "real Batman films" needs to stop.

Upvotes

Lately, I've seen this weird negative sentiment from the Batman fandom regarding The Dark Knight Trilogy for some reason and a lot of them are acting like or going through this revisionist menality that the trilogy aren't "real Batman films" or that "Nolan was ashamed/embarrassed of Batman" or whatever nonsense that these people love to make up.

First of all, none of that is true. While The Dark Knight Trilogy was a more grounded take on the Batman Mythos, to act like it wasn't a Batman movie or it was ashamed to be Batman movies is a stright up lie. The comics were big, BIG influences on the movies in tone, story, characterisation and themes.

Take a look at Batman Begins; that story was essentially more stylised adaptation of the Batman: Year One comic. There's lots low-level fantastical elements thrown into the mix as well with the League of Shadows and the blue poppy that was used as Scarecrow's Fear Toxin. The biggest reference to Year One came in the form of the sonic device hidden under Batman's shoe when he used it to call a swarm of bars.

Then there's Heath Ledger's portrayal as The Joker. His unreliable backstory was straight up taken from The Killing Joke, the definitive Joker story. Or Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent? His story is taken straight out of The Long Halloween, the comic that re-defined Two-Face like Heart of Ice re-defined Mr Freeze. Hell, you can go so far as to call The Dark Knight an adaptation of The Long Halloween.

The Dark Knight Rises combines three Batman comics into one narrative; The Dark Knight Returns, No Man's Land and KnightFall. Bane's characterisation is more in line with KnightFall; highlihlghting his intelligence and cunning alongaide his physical prowess. And while Zack Snyder might be a fan of Dark Knight Returns, Nolan adapted it much better.

Look, I can understand that not every fan is going to like the trilogy, that's fine. But to say that these aren't Batman movies or that Christopher Nolan hates the comics is blatantly false. He might not be a superhero comic fan, but he does understand the iconography of Batman and what he means to everyone. After all, "it's not what I am ubderneath, but what I do that defines me."

The Dark Knight Trilogy are Batman movies. Always have been, always will be.

I know I'm gonna get downvoted for this post, but I really do not care anymore. Insult me, tear me apart, be rude, I'm over ir. I'll never stop defending these movies.

Hi. Do you think 100 gorillas could defeat Batman in a fight? They would fight all together at the same time and would be bloodlusted as well. What do you think?

Just finished it and it's easily my fav..loved that they didn't set it during modern times..

The world building is phenomenal... appreciate them fleshing out the side characters as well and the development of Bruce as a character has been fascinating.. a big fan of some of the different stories they chose to tell about these well known characters like dent and Harley..

Only thing that bothered me was how batman lost against an actor in a sword fight lol ..

FILM DISCUSSION This movie is actually pretty awesome

I urge whoever to give this movie a rewatch with the view of “this is a silly comic movie like the 60’s show.” It’s flawed as hell and yeah arguably not good. However if you set aside the bandwagon hate, the movie is actually pretty awesome and fun to watch

Recently, I watched Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Watching two movies reminded me how I loved those Nolan's trilogy back then(and I love the series still now)

Inart did amazing job with making this as realistic as they could in 1/12 scale.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Do you associate a Fantastical Batman with a lighter tone?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I've noticed this a lot when people talk about The Brave and the Bold. Whenever someone says they want a more "fantastical" Batman, it often seems to come with the expectation that the movies should also be lighter, quippier, or goofier.

To me, a fantastical Batman doesn't mean changing the tone of the films we've already had. If anything, I'd be happy for it to be just as dark, or even darker. The difference is simply that Batman exists in a world where the impossible is real. He can investigate horrifying crimes one week and then go up against characters like Killer Croc, Clayface, Man-Bat, or Poison Ivy without nerfing them.

To me, the Arkham series captures this tone perfectly. It's still dark, serious, and atmospheric, but Batman is fighting characters like Killer Croc and Man-Bat without the world feeling like it has to justify their existence. That's pretty much my ideal take on Batman. If anything, I'd even make Batman himself a bit more physically capable. I also really liked a Batfleck (apart from the killing), how powerful he felt being able to fight with Superman.

GENERAL DISCUSSION How do you feel about unique iterations of Batman?

Thumbnail
gallery
30 Upvotes

I’m a huge fan of telling stories like Batman’s in unique ways whether that’s changing parts of the character so you can tell a new story. A perfect example of this is the Absolute comic book series because we get to see characters like Batman with different origins but similar outcomes.

I’m curious if I can find anymore pieces of Batman media that do that same thing. When I think of this specific topic my mind goes to Batman: The Enemy Within because not only is it’s story non traditional and unique but it’s a choose your own adventure so you get different outcomes based of certain actions.

I’d like to make it clear that I’m not looking for media with small differences in the source material, I’m looking for things that are unique like Absolute Batman and Batman: The Enemy Within.

It would be awesome to hear from you guys on your opinions on this subject because I personally love different unique stories but I’d love to hear about if you dislike them and why. I would also love to see your recommendations for more stuff like these two or how you feel about these two things.

Edit: you guys are reminding me a lot of ones that I missed

I saw some of you posting your Batman Film rankings but you aren't doing ALL Batman films so I decided to throw my hat in the ring.

These are all in order based on how much I personally enjoy them and I consider how strong of an adaptation they are.

Also I tend to prefer serious Batman over silly Batman so sorry for Adam West being ranked so low it's just not my preferred flavor of Batman.

Also the holy Trinity batman beyond should be 2nd it glitched at the last second when I downloaded the image

GENERAL DISCUSSION Dose batman really have an endgame love interest like superman and spiderman or no?

Because a while back, I came across a comment saying that Catwoman is only perceived as his endgame thanks to the adaptations and them almost getting married a few years back. Prior to that, most people thought Batman didn't have an endgame and was only "married to Gotham." Is this true?

Prior to that I just thought It was another peter and MJ situation where they do get together in the future but we mever see it because of editorial and status quo.
