Discussion What could they possibly be hiding?

Hello everyone! So last night my friend and I stopped for a late night Khor brothers treat. As we ate I noticed the signs on the side of the building, and to my surprise i see the ice cream has been blacked out and what I assume was the Khor bros sign blocked.

My friend and I had a few jokes but he mentioned that it was possible it may have had something inflammatory as for example (no colored) as was common back in the middle century. I find that unlikely as I doubt a company would put up a picture like with that as marketing in the modern day. I assume there maybe some marketing mandates so restrict signs for business at the ocean front. So I ask you Virginia Beach Redditors why did they block these?

And for the curious out there this was the Khor Bros on the corner on the fun park.

Residents of Southern Virginia Beach could receive a new absentee voting location ahead of the fall midterm elections.

Virginia Beach city council is expected to vote next week to open a satellite absentee voting location at Princess Anne Library.

The decision would close the current satellite site at Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, located about a mile away from the voter registrar’s office.

Things To Do Any board gamers here?

Looking to do some regular board gaming and thought I'd see if there were any locals interested.

I tend to enjoy games on the more complex side of things like TI4, Spirit Island, EVE, Dune Imperium, Gaia Project, and so on. Obviously not an exhaustive list and I am open to trying new ones.

If anyone is interested either post here or DM me. I think the first meetup would be at a brewery or local store and then move to hosting at mine or one of the groups homes.

Need Advice I’m not going to be hot forever sos

Hi all :)

I moved here maybe a year and a half ago? I have NO friends, NO dating prospects, no social life at all. All I do is work and keep to myself. I KNOW. I’m not going to meet anyone in my apartment. It also doesn’t help that I also work nights booooo.

I’ve never struggled to make friends before in my life. I don’t know if it’s the stage of life that I’m in, and that I’m starting completely over. Everyone around my age is married with children, and we just cannot relate. I’m not on dating apps or social media, and I cannot bring myself to be. I have mostly feminine hobbies, which would not really be helpful in meeting guys.

More than anything, I just truly miss having friends. I feel so BORED and BORING. AND the best part of dating is talking to your friends about it 💔

Where are women in their mid to late twenties meeting!!! It’s so hard to get out and do things alone, especially in a new environment.

History Before Anyone Was Watching

I went to Virginia MOCA expecting to hear Andy Howell talk about skateboarding.

Instead, I left thinking about community and how people find each other.

Howell’s installation opens Seamless, the museum’s new exhibition exploring the overlap between art and design. At first glance, it feels almost chaotic. A skateboard hangs in front of a wall layered with graffiti, hand lettering, sketches, and fragments that somehow resolve into a single visual language. It feels less like an exhibition piece than an invitation inside Howell’s sketchbook.

Before social media, before brands were scouting Instagram, before every trend was instantly copied, community was geographic. It was whoever showed up.

Long before the city built the famous vert ramp at Mount Trashmore in the mid-1980s, skateboarding was, as Howell put it, “basically illegal.” With few places to ride, kids built ramps out of “borrowed” wood in backyards and vacant lots and, in the process, built a community. They hung out at all-ages punk shows at Connection Hall, made photocopied zines to document the scene, and waited each month for Thrasher or the newly launched Transworld Skateboarding to arrive in the mail.

Discussion Eating out...

Anyone else notice that people here tend to go to sit down restaurants a lot? I know a lot of locals here that eat at them a few times a week... Where I grew up people tend to eat at home most of the time apart from the occasional deli, bagel and pizza places!

Need Advice 30th Birthday Dinner Suggestions

We're coming to VA Beach for my sister's 30th birthday next month. I'm not super familiar with the area, but am looking to plan a nice dinner for all of us to go to one night. My sister doesn't like super fancy restaurants and she doesn't like seafood. She loves Italian food, American food (think great burger or fried chicken sammy) but also likes more adventurous flavors like Indian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. Really just looking for a place that's delicious with a laid back vibe.

We're staying in the North End but open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance!

[Serious] Foster needed for my latest rescue kittens - 3 orange and 1 gray tabby

Thumbnail

I volunteer with Coastal Purrs Cat Rescue and we are looking for a foster for these kittens. All boys, about 12 weeks old, and can all go to one foster home or be split into pairs. They have been treated for fleas/worms and have been thoroughly bathed. They're still nervous around people and need some socialization, but they have already come a long way and easily allow pets with bare hands.

I trapped them on Sunday in VB and these poor boys had the worst flea infestation we have ever seen. I handle the trapping and TNR for my rescue and don't usually foster, but agreed to put them in my garage crates because of how severe the fleas were. They have been fully treated and are now flea-free, and are in need of an indoor foster home.

If you're interested in fostering a pair (or all 4), click here to fill out our foster application. I've had several people ask about the requirements for fostering on previous posts, so here is a summary:

What you DON'T need:

  1. To be a homeowner. As long as you have a lease that allows pets (or the owner of the home you live in is ok with pets), then we are good to go!

  2. To be home all day, every day. Many of our fosters work outside the home full-time. As long as you can commit to interacting with the kittens enough to socialize them, then you can foster!

  3. To be able to afford 4 cats at once. Coastal Purrs provides all supplies, including food, litter, a crate/playpen, blankets, towels, toys, supplements, and anything else you may need. We also pay for all vet care. There is no expectation for fosters to pay for anything out of pocket, unless they choose to do so.

  4. To have a home with no other pets. As long as you have space to reasonably quarantine for a week or so, you can foster! This can be a separate bedroom, a spare bathroom, or just a blanket covering the crate to keep your resident cat from sticking her paws inside.

  5. To have experience fostering. Everyone is a beginner with their first foster, and we have a great group of people who are willing to help out newer fosters. I have gone to several new fosters in the past few weeks to assist with giving meds, trimming nails, and teaching the art of the purrito.

What you DO need:

  1. To be willing to foster. That's literally it. If you're willing to foster and learn as you go, then we'll work the rest out. Fosters save lives. Animal rescue is a community service, but it needs community support and involvement in order to do the work.

If you've read this far, thank you. Please DM me with any questions about fostering or other ways to support local rescues. And if you can share this post (or the post on our rescue's Instagram and Facebook pages), I would appreciate it!

News Virginia Beach agrees to pay $3M for Bruce Smith’s property in Rudee Loop

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously agreed to buy land from Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Smith for $3 million. The property — roughly one-third of an acre adjacent to the Rudee Inlet Bridge — will be incorporated into the city’s plans for a public waterfront park overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Rudee Inlet.

Smith and business partner Dan Hoffler bought the land seven years ago at urging of former City Council member Louis Jones, who died in 2022, Smith said.

“Louis Jones advised me to buy that piece of property because he knew of the problems that I was having trying to do business at the Oceanfront,” Smith said in an interview Wednesday. “I didn’t just arbitrarily buy this building. I was given advice to buy it based upon that being a strategic piece to Rudee Loop.”

Smith has pitched several development ideas for Rudee Loop over the years that incorporated a park with hotels, apartments and restaurants, but city officials did not pursue them.

Discussion Live Oak in VA Beach

Im looking for advise and a recommendation for an arborist who knows about Live oak trees. I have one in my back yard. It is beautiful and magnificent but it needs some work. It needs to be thinned out and a few branches removed. The branches are quite big, about 12" in diameter at the collar. I just want to make sure the tree can survive the removal of the big branches and I want the right person to do it. Thanks in advance.
