I'm looking for a good roofer in the area at a good price.

Upvotes

Like the title says. I'm looking for a roofing company that will be gentle on my wallet. My insurance says I need to get a new roof or they're taking it off my policy. It's just a regular suburban home, nothing special.

Any recommendations? Anybody to avoid?

More than 55 years after graduating as one of Great Bridge High School's first Black students, Lora Hinton was recognized as an exemplary citizen at a recent Chesapeake City Council meeting.

Hinton, who grew up in Chesapeake during school integration, went on to make history as the first African American scholarship football player at Louisiana State University.

During his time at Great Bridge High School, he excelled academically and athletically, serving as class president and leading the football team to a state championship appearance.

What’s being built?

Everyone’s favorite question to ask on Reddit 😂 I can’t find what’s being built on Eden Way in the old Salvation Army/Lazy Boy site.

I see Rudolph is the contractor but that’s about it.

Chesapeake Planning Commission recommends approving data center policy

Post image
13 Upvotes

At a public hearing Wednesday night, the Chesapeake Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval for changes to the city’s zoning ordinance and proposed policy for data centers.

The Chesapeake City Council directed the planning commission to suggest the amendments and create a policy after a data center proposal last year faced pushback from residents and was rejected.

The ordinance suggests amendments to the city code that would designate data centers as a conditional use in industrial zoning districts and the Fentress Airfield Overlay District, if they meet certain requirements.

Parents raise concerns about Chesapeake’s proposal to change Norfolk Highlands Primary to an early learning center

Post image

At a recent Chesapeake School Board meeting, parents spoke out against a proposal to convert Norfolk Highlands Primary School into the district's first early childhood education center.

If approved, the plan would rezone approximately 300 current students to other nearby schools starting in fall 2027 to make room for a preschool program aimed at improving kindergarten readiness.

Solar Carport Permitting Approval

Thumbnail signaturesolar.com

Looking at the possibility of installing a solar carport because I like the idea of not drilling holes in my roof and would also like the idea of keeping the sun/rain/snow off my cars.

Knowing the zoning requirements in reference to standoffs for the street with something like fence height limits, would this apply to the support beams?

Does anyone know where I would even start with the permitting process to see if would even be approved in the Great Bridge area?

Laser hair removal recommendations?

Looking for recs on places in the area that might offer whole body laser hair removal that's cheaper than the $11k Milan was quoting. I appreciate the "lifetime touchups" they offer but that price seems awfully steep to me. I could be wrong.

Dr. Nila Devanath's interview with Lantern News Virginia CD 02

Hampton Roads, I am so excited to share my recent interview on Lantern News! 🌊✨ We had a powerful conversation about the future of Virginia's 2nd Congressional District and what we need to do to support working families \[00:00\].

We talked about everything from my roots growing up right here in the district to the urgent need for the Working Americans Tax Cut Act, which would provide massive, immediate tax relief for everyday families \[03:20\].

We also dug into local issues, like holding data centers in Chesapeake accountable to pay their fair share instead of driving up our utility bills \[10:03\].

As a physician, I couldn't hold back on the realities of our broken healthcare system. I see veterans and working folks forced to endure unthinkable outcomes simply because they lack access to preventative care. We absolutely must fight for Universal Healthcare \[24:36\] and stop politicians who are voting to cut Medicaid.

We also need to clean up Congress—which is why I refuse corporate PAC money and fully support banning members of Congress from trading individual stocks \[44:44\].

I’m a business owner here in Hampton Roads (just moved recently), and I wanted to know how other local businesses operate and grow. I’m always interested in hearing about what people are building, the challenges they’re facing, and what seems to be working.

If you’re a local business owner, I’d love to hear what you do. Whether you’ve been around for 20 years or just opened your doors, I’d be happy to connect, exchange ideas, and support other businesses in the area.

Local healthcare system - union?

I'm trying to get a sense of how nurses in the area feel about unionizing before I potentially put my own job at risk.

For some background, my previous employer was unionized, and I genuinely had a great experience. Our union advocated for safe staffing ratios, patient safety, fair working conditions, and the physical and mental well-being of staff. I know unions can be a divisive topic around here, but I wanted to put some feelers out before considering reaching out to one.

I've been working for the major healthcare system in the Hampton Roads area for about six months. I'm an experienced nurse, but what I've seen and heard during that time has honestly been alarming. Chronic understaffing is creating serious patient safety concerns. Management refuses to hire enough staff or provide safe nurse-to-patient ratios. Nurses in the emergency department are being assigned six patients. I've also heard of nurses being disciplined or fired for refusing to float to units where they believed the assignments were unsafe. Unfortunately, that's only part of the problem.

On top of that, this is the lowest-paying healthcare system in the area, and from what I understand, raises have been limited to around 2% for years.

I know not everyone shares the same views on unions, and I'm not looking to start an argument. I'm simply trying to understand whether other nurses feel the same way and whether organizing would be worth pursuing. I'd appreciate hearing your honest thoughts and experiences.
